How I Avoided and Got Rid Of GBS with Natural Remedies

GBS, or Group Beta Streptococcus, is an colonization that affects many people and around 1/4 to 1/3 of women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Many people carry this bacteria in their digestive systems with no problem, but it can cause complications in a newborns of mothers who are colonized.

Mothers are often tested for Group B Strep in the third trimester of pregnancy and if they are positive, are usually given antibiotics during labor. I tested positive for GBS in my fourth pregnancy, though I eradicated it and tested negative before the birth, and then I tested negative in my next pregnancy (thus the title of the post). As there is a very small chance of serious and life threatening complications for baby in GBS positive moms (even with antibiotic use), I wanted to share what worked for me in hopes it would help other women avoid this risk to baby. This is just my experience and is not intended to be medical advice.

Natural Remedies for GBS

GBS certainly has the potential to be serious and shouldn’t be ignored, but antibiotics carry their own risks and can cause problems as well. Especially with all the emerging research about the transfer of gut flora and immunity from mother to baby during delivery, it would definitely be preferable not to take antibiotics if it can be avoided (especially if testing positive for GBS can be avoided in the first place).

The good news is, at least in my case, GBS can be avoided with natural remedies.

As GBS occurs naturally in the digestive tract for some people, I felt it was important to treat the digestive tract as a whole when working to eliminate GBS instead of just focusing on the genital area. A probiotic rich diet is beneficial for overall health,and I also found it helpful in getting rid of GBS.

When researching, I found the following advice for treating/preventing GBS:

  • Eating a probiotic rich diet including things like Kombucha, Water Kefir, Yogurt, Sauerkraut and other fermented foods to help create a healthy gut environment.
  • Taking a probiotic supplement and using it vaginally (I used this one orally daily and vaginally every day or two).
  • Consuming garlic capsules or raw garlic cloves daily.
  • Consuming Coconut Oil for its naturally antiviral properties.
  • Using plain organic yogurt vaginally to help balance bacteria.
  • Taking Vitamin C daily.
  • Using a Chlorhexidine rinse vaginally before and during labor. (This is the usual protocol) This was a last resort for me and I was glad to not have to use it, as the emerging evidence about the bacterial transfer during labor brings this practice into question.
  • Consuming raw apple cider vinegar daily and using it as a diluted rinse.

What I Did That Worked

With my fourth pregnancy, I tested positive at 35 weeks for GBS and then at 37 weeks was tested again and the result was negative. What I did during that time (and what a friend did successfully after testing positive very early in her pregnancy) that worked:

  • Took 2,000 mg of Vitamin C in divided doses each day
  • Consuming 2 cloves of raw garlic each day by finely mincing them and drinking them down with water
  • Consuming at least 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil daily for its antibacterial/antiviral properties
  • Using a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse vaginally each day
  • Taking 6+ probiotic capsules a day
  • Consuming large amounts of fermented foods and drinks
  • Using a garlic clove vaginally for one night (anecdotal evidence supports that this is very effective)

In my next pregnancy to prevent GBS to begin with, I followed a protocol that is recommended by a midwife I know (and she is yet to have a case of GBS when a mom is following this):

    You mentioned Taking a probiotic supplement and using it vaginally, how do you use it vaginally. I’ve never heard of this before and was curious. Also you mentioned doing a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse vaginally each day. Did you just spray the ACV with like a water bottle? Sorry for all the questions. I just found out I tested positive and want to do everything I can to change it!

    How long should you do the regimen mentioned at the end from the midwife before retreating to try to get rid of the gbs? I was negative with my first child and found out I am positive with my second pregnancy and already 37 weeks when I go the results. I’ve started this regimen of vitamin c andprobiotic oraly as well as garlic clove vaginally. Would 8 days be enough?

    UPDATE on my previous post about being GBS positive. It ended up getting worse for me, near my due date I was even gbs positive in the URINE. I refused the antibiotics. Baby was fine. I was fine. Breastfed for 3 years. He’s now 3 and a half and the healthiest smartest child. Oh and might I add he’s fully unvaccinated… had to add that just for the shills to enjoy ?

I have tested positive for group b strep with my previous 3 pregnancies, and I am really hoping to avoid the antibiotics during labor with this, my fourth pregnancy.     I have been tested postie with GBS at week 27 of pregnancy (now I am nearly 35 weeks). I have taken antibiotics both orally and locally. Just did another swab and the GBS is still present. So I am very keen to try the recommendations and try to decrease the infection naturally.

    I have a couple of silly questions maybe, regarding the probiotics and the garlic clove.

    Which probiotic can I use vaginally and how many capsules/how often should I insert them?
    Regarding the vaginal use of garlic – do I just put a close on its own, or shall I wrap it with something (just worried how can I take it out in the morning :))

    I had GBS in my second pregnancy and took the antibiotics. My baby girl was born pink and latched on right away after a 22 hour hospital labor with epidural after I reached 4cm dilated. I really enjoyed that birth! It was so relaxing and calm. She was 9lb, 4oz. This time I have GBS again, and I am planning a similar birth as I had with my daughter. Can’t wait
    for the day to get here!

    Katie, thank you for all of this helpful information. I have been tested positive for GBS my last 3 pregnancies and have seen the negative effects antibiotics has had on my sons health. I am 9 weeks pregnant now and have been tested positive for GBS through my urine. I was wondering if you could give me your opinion on which of these treatments I should try.

    Thank you for the information. I have been following this just to help with the baby’s gut flora. After reading all that I could find on what information is out there, it seems like we should give our babies the best start possible. When you ate fermented/probiotic rich foods, did you each more than 3 servings a day? I am doing 1-2 servings of kefir, 1 serving of kimchi and a serving or 2 of Kombucha. My house smells a little different, but we are in the home stretch, so what’s 5 or so more weeks?

    Hello! Ive been scanning thru the comments and saw some people ask a few questions that you never answered, and was hoping you could since Im wondering as well. For the ACV rinse, whats the dilution? Half half? Also how many capsules of that garlic per day that you have linked? Bottle says one soft gel four times daily, or for pregnancy that would be too high of a dose? Would appreciate hearing back from you!

    According to Cochrane, early onsets of GBS infection of newborns born from GBS negative mothers are slightly higher than GBS positive mothers. So why the Medical establishment still hasn’t created a protocol to administer antibiotics to every single mother during the labor? It will create more profit for Pharmaceutical companies!! I think it will come as they say it perfectly fine having antibiotics for mothers and newborns, just have some probiotics after. Great! More probiotics will create more profit for the same companies. Perfect scenario! Thank you! I’m Mum of three, was GBS positive, didn’t have any antibiotics, natural deliveries and all my children perfectly healthy, they don’t have any conditions, food allergies, etc. I guess it is just a good luck. I am not a customer of Pharmaceutical companies, sorry. It is all about money these days not us and our children.

    I really love your blog but I would HIGHLY caution moms to take the antibiotics as well as taking some natural health measures!!

    I got pregnant at a 26, I am an avid outdoor person / backpacker, very healthy, but I think I caught GBS on a certain backpacking trip where water/cleanliness left much to be desired. I did not take my prescribed antibiotics and so did not fully clear the infection, trying instead cranberry and ACV , lots of liquids and probiotics. My symptoms went away but bacteria remained.
    Then I got pregnant 5 months later- bacteria resurfaced- had a raging kidney infection all through my first trimester, was bitten by an infected dog, and had a high count case of GBS. I really didn’t want more antibiotics at birth but I was too scared of the alternatives because I knew a baby who died because of GBS! anyway, lots of antibiotics, 1 dose of an epidural, and pictocin later my baby was born healthy and vaginally. I don’t regret any of those drugs. I took a high dose antibiotic and ate fermented foods after birth. My baby got great immunity from breastfeeding. We eat a great diet now that he’s eating solids and that will further strengthen his system.

    I would NOT DICE THE HEALTH OF YOUR CHILD by trying to rely just on natural methods. Antibiotics should not be handed out willy-nilly, but GBS is VERY THREATENING IF LEFT UNTREATED PROPERLY.

    Hi, I am 9 weeks pregnant and they did a swab and came back with “heavy growth” of gbs. After researching a bit I am doing, probiotics capsule once a day-soon will increase to 2 capsules (I use femdophille probiotic), eat 2 raw garlic cloves a day, drink a cup of kefir a day, 2 yogurts a day, kombucha, will start soon doing apple cider vinegar baths 3x week, 1000 mg of vitamin c (I’m a bit scared of 2000 mg, is that safe?). I wanted to ask you about garlic inserted in the vagina for the night, some resources state to do for 8 nights, you state one night, is that one night total for the rest of my pregnancy or can I just do it once a week for the rest of my pregnancy, or maybe 8 on and 8 off, I have 7 more months left of pregnancy and I really want to get rid of this.

    Hello! As I have been researching, it sounds like GBS is something that can be colonized in the intestines, vagina, and rectum, etc. The test that’s often done is through urine. I think the vaginal suppository/wash advice is really great for those who have it colonized in the vagina. But how do you even know where it is colonized? Is it useful to do the vaginal suppositories/washes when the bacteria have really colonized somewhere else? Thank you in advance for your response, Wellness Mama!

    Hi there! So relieved to have found this GBS protcol. Trying to retest and get a negative culture! Just curious though, Wellness Mama, did you continue the more aggressive protocol until the birth after you were able to test negative or switch to the more conservative approach your midwife recommended??? Would love to hear back. Trying to decide how best to continue to treat it until labor! THANKS!!!

    Wellness Mama, I am 18 weeks pregnant. I was late to get my 1st trimester screenings done and just got my urine results back. My urine is positive for gps..my cnm wants me to take antibiotic now and at delivery. From what I’ve been reading I will probably not object to antibiotics at birth to keep my baby safe, but I’m not sure about taking them now. It seems like from what I understand it will just come right back. And possibly become more resistant to the antibiotic. What do you think? Any advice is welcomed!
