How I Avoided and Got Rid Of GBS with Natural Remedies
Wellness Mama » Blog » Motherhood » How I Avoided GBS Naturally

GBS, or Group Beta Streptococcus, is an colonization that affects many people and around 1/4 to 1/3 of women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Many people carry this bacteria in their digestive systems with no problem, but it can cause complications in a newborns of mothers who are colonized.

Mothers are often tested for Group B Strep in the third trimester of pregnancy and if they are positive, are usually given antibiotics during labor. I tested positive for GBS in my fourth pregnancy, though I eradicated it and tested negative before the birth, and then I tested negative in my next pregnancy (thus the title of the post). As there is a very small chance of serious and life threatening complications for baby in GBS positive moms (even with antibiotic use), I wanted to share what worked for me in hopes it would help other women avoid this risk to baby. This is just my experience and is not intended to be medical advice.

For more information on the risks associated with GBS and with antibiotic treatment, check out this well-researched article. This page provides a compilation of a lot of research on GBS and antibiotic use.

Natural Remedies for GBS

GBS certainly has the potential to be serious and shouldn’t be ignored, but antibiotics carry their own risks and can cause problems as well. Especially with all the emerging research about the transfer of gut flora and immunity from mother to baby during delivery, it would definitely be preferable not to take antibiotics if it can be avoided (especially if testing positive for GBS can be avoided in the first place).

The good news is, at least in my case, GBS can be avoided with natural remedies.

As GBS occurs naturally in the digestive tract for some people, I felt it was important to treat the digestive tract as a whole when working to eliminate GBS instead of just focusing on the genital area. A probiotic rich diet is beneficial for overall health, and I also found it helpful in getting rid of GBS.

When researching, I found the following advice for treating/preventing GBS:

  • Eating a probiotic rich diet including things like Kombucha, Water Kefir, Yogurt, Sauerkraut and other fermented foods to help create a healthy gut environment.
  • Taking a probiotic supplement and using it vaginally (I used this one orally daily and vaginally every day or two).
  • Consuming garlic capsules or raw garlic cloves daily.
  • Consuming Coconut Oil for its naturally antiviral properties.
  • Using plain organic yogurt vaginally to help balance bacteria.
  • Taking Vitamin C daily.
  • Using a Chlorhexidine rinse vaginally before and during labor. (This is the usual protocol) This was a last resort for me and I was glad to not have to use it, as the emerging evidence about the bacterial transfer during labor brings this practice into question.
  • Consuming raw apple cider vinegar daily and using it as a diluted rinse.

What I Did That Worked

With my fourth pregnancy, I tested positive at 35 weeks for GBS and then at 37 weeks was tested again and the result was negative. What I did during that time (and what a friend did successfully after testing positive very early in her pregnancy) that worked:

  • Took 2,000 mg of Vitamin C in divided doses each day
  • Consuming 2 cloves of raw garlic each day by finely mincing them and drinking them down with water
  • Consuming at least 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil daily for its antibacterial/antiviral properties
  • Using a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse vaginally each day
  • Taking 6+ probiotic capsules a day
  • Consuming large amounts of fermented foods and drinks
  • Using a garlic clove vaginally for one night (anecdotal evidence supports that this is very effective)

In my next pregnancy to prevent GBS to begin with, I followed a protocol that is recommended by a midwife I know (and she is yet to have a case of GBS when a mom is following this):

Have you ever had GBS while pregnant? What did you do? Share below!

GBS (Group B Strep) can affect up to 1/3 of pregnant women but these natural remedies helped me (and can help you!) to avoid it.

Do you know how to create the apple cider vinegar cleanse (douche)? What portions do you use for ACV and water? Do you have to boil the water or use specific filtered water?

I’m adding in my experience for those who are considering the garlic + probiotic + vitamin C protocol that is presented here. I followed this protocol using Jarrow’s fem dophilus formula, both orally and vaginally beginning at 20 weeks. I just had the GBS test at 36 weeks and tested positive. I wanted this “foolproof” protocol to work so badly, but it just didn’t for me. I’d say it doesn’t hurt to try (though the probiotics are quite expensive), but in the end it might just be something that’s out of your control. Best of luck to everyone!

Thank you so much Katie for sharing your experience with us all, it has helped me to cure my GBS and deliver in peace.

Ive followed your protocol and was able to deliver my baby #4. without any complication, Now im in process to follow it again starting earlier at 27 week with baby #5. since i was diagnisis with an Uti ( colonization of strep B) hopefully it works on this aswell, if you have any suggestion please let me know.

    Thank you

    Hello,

I was wondering how many billion the probiotics you took contain i didn’t notice that info on the link? Also, when inserting vaginally, can I leave it in the capsule even if they have an enteric coating?

I tested positive in my fifth pregnancy for the first time, received penicillin at delivery and had the worst aftermath: recurrent mastitis/ clogged ducts, vaginitis, thrush and the worst anxiety I’ve ever experienced. I’m definitely hoping to test negative and avoid that with my 6th baby (currently 25 weeks).

Do you think it was the garlic clove inside your vagina for one night that made the most difference in curing your group B strep or do you think it was something else? Also, I tried this last night but I didn’t insert it very deep. Does it need to be inserted really far inside your vagina for it to work?
    Thanks,
    Margaret

I just tested positive, this is my 3rd pregnancy and my first positive. My questions are 1. Do you use ACV with the mother or without for vaginal rinse? 2. Is vaginal rinse just external? 3. You said garlic clove vaginally for one night, does it matter what night? Like I should do it now to start the regimen or closer to when I am retested?
Thank you so much! I find your site very helpful!

I used unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the mother and I used the garlic close to the beginning of the regimen.

Hello and thank you for all of the information! Did you take raw, unpasteurized AVC? I am reading up on so many reasons why unpasteurized is good for people…but not pregnant woman. Is it safe to take raw, unpasteurized AVC during pregnancy since there is a risk of bacterial infection that is harmful to the unborn baby?

I tested positive for group B strep at 36 weeks and would like to cure myself and avoid unnecessary antibiotics, if possible. Additionally, this is my third pregnancy and the first time I tested positive. Do you know how I could have picked up group B strep?

    Thank you!

GBS is naturally present in the body and digestive system in small amounts and is normally fine. It is only problematic when it cultures in other areas, specifically the birth canal close to birth. You didn’t do anything wrong to pick it up, and it would also likely eventually go away on its own, but of course, it’s important to make sure and be safe when your baby is born. I did drink ACV while pregnant but I’d definitely consult your doctor or midwife to be sure!

For preventative purposes, did you take that regimen of Vitamin C, garlic & probiotic from the time you found out you were pregnant or did you start it later? At what point does the midwife you referenced have her patients start this regimen? I’m 28 weeks along. Thank you!

Your article says “In my next pregnancy to prevent GBS to begin with, I followed a protocol that is recommended by a midwife I know (and she is yet to have a case of GBS when a mom is following this):”

Curious at what point you started your preventative course with that pregnancy (the 3 things I listed previously) not the combative course that involved more stuff. Do you know at what point the midwife you referenced has her patients start this preventative regimen?

Katie, were your GBS tests vaginal/rectal swabs or urine tests?

@wellness mama, I would love to get your advice!
I tested positive for gbs in week 36 of my 5th pregnancy (4 years ago). I am allergic to penicillin, so I had to be on a different antibiotic for 12 hours before they officially induced me (broke my water), I delivered less than an hour later. I am expecting again and was diagnosed with gbs from a urine sample at my 12 week visit. I love that you healed yours and I would love to have the same results. Should I change anything because I’m only 13 weeks along? Or do the same regime you did at 37 weeks? I would really love to avoid antibiotics and those 12 hours of just sitting and doing nothing productive.
Also, the OB nurse who I talked to about my results said I was getting the antibiotics regardless of any changes. I’m worried that even if I do I do heal it, they’ll force the antibiotics anyway. Any advice on how to approach that possibility?
    Thank you!

I’m very keen to avoid a GBS positive this pregnancy. I also have IBS and Garlic is a major trigger for me so defiantly won’t help my gut heal.
Does anyone have a FODMAP friendly plan I could follow?

When did you stop using the probiotic as a suppository? I just don’t want to go into labor shortly after inserting one. Did you stop closer to your due date or continue up until your water broke?

If you don’t nick the clove, the allicin cannot be released. Only through breaking through the outer skin on of the clove are the chemical components released to create allicin. This is the stuff that powerfully stops the bacteria so you want it to be freely released to bathe the lining of the vagina. I use my thumbnail to groove the clove on all sides and get that allicin going. Just insert and remove like a tampon. Use a reasonably decent sized clove for effectiveness and for easier removal. You will feel relief so great you forget you even have a vagina or bladder. lol. But really, this stuff is the best relief I’ve found in dealing with vaginal or bladder infections! It will lose it’s effectiveness after a few hours, so remove and replace it.

Use only high quality fresh organic garlic- you don’t want pesticide residues down there creating more havoc. This protocol will irritate the vaginal wall a bit. Some may be more sensitive than others. You want to give it a break periodically. A milder method is to mince the garlic clove and then soak it in a little warm liquid coconut oil or organic extra virgin olive oil. You can also add several drops of essential oils like frankincense or thyme or other good antibacterials if you want a real strong Vaggi bomb. Stir a bit and let the substances sit and blend for 15-30 minutes, strain, then soak an OB tampon in it for the count of 20 to absorb. Insert and use as the garlic. It is less irritating and still extremely effective! You may even alternate the two methods. It will also burn a little but goes away pretty quickly.

And remember! All these protocols are in vain if you don’t alter your diet to support good bugs and starve out the bad. If you provide your body with what it needs and avoid the things that make it sick, it can and will heal itself. Plenty of fresh raw veggies every day in salads or green smoothies. You need 2-4 cups of greens daily to support good health! Avoid sugar, dairy and refined carbs like the plague. Avoid wheat gluten- it is highly inflammatory and hard for your body to digest. Instead, let your body use it’s energy to fight the bad bacteria and restore healthy balance. If you take plenty of vitamin C (preferably Liposomal vitamin C – 10 grams or even more daily), take quality probiotics, and do this protocol consistently for a week you should whip it. It may take one or two more rounds to permanently restore balance, depending on how far off balance you are and other factors. Some bacteria are really hard to kill off and GBS is one of them. But if you don’t give up and keep it up, you will get there! Once you do, continue with good eating habits and don’t go back to much sugar or it will come back as surely as the sun rises. If at all possible stay off antibiotics! It creates the imbalance, and using them just makes it worse and permanently alters your gut flora. It is a long hard road to bring it back once that is lost.

Hi! I’m curious as to if you saw an OB/midwife in an office or if you had a home birth? I’m 37 weeks with our 4th baby and tested positive for the first time. I’m armed and ready to start most of these natural remedies today! When I messaged asking my midwife (that works alongside OBs in an office) to be retested, she said she’s ever heard of retesting GSB before and its certainly not something their practice generally does but she’d consult with her in-office doctor before my next appt. Just curious if you were able to retest in an office?

I wish I would have known about this when my daughter was born! I tested positive and was put on antibiotics during pregnancy and during delivery. It wasn’t until after she was born that I began learning about natural alternatives and a healthier lifestyle. Now my daughter is 6 and we are working through her food allergies and unbalanced gut flora problems. Thanks for your research and info, Katie!

How do you apply the diluted acv rinse vaginally? I never have before, and is that safe for 36 weeks of pregnancy?

    1. Lisa Avatar

Just get a small soft plastic squeeze bottle with a nozzle screw-on cap at any drug store. Fill with warm water and the ACV in a 3:1 ratio, 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar, and squirt it up there, flushing it through for several minutes. If you do it while lying on your back on a towel (or in the tub) it will stay in better and works best. Be sure to get the raw ACV with the “mother”. More expensive but so worth it. And yes, it is safe for pregnancy even at 36 weeks. 🙂

Are the Kyolic garlic supplements effective though, since they aren’t raw and don’t contain the allicin, the main antibacterial agent in raw garlic? I’ve had gbs with my previous 2 pregnancies and didn’t think to research natural remedies. What can I say, I was younger and just took everything the doctor said as word and took the antibiotics without a second thought. Now that I’m older and more seasoned, I have learned the importance of more natural methods, and less antibiotics, especially during the birthing process. Bearing this in mind, I am pregnant again and just looking for the best possible approach toward prevention as possible. Thank you for your blog and sharing your wisdom with others such as myself who need the education!

    Just sharing my experience:

I am 36wk with my 5th. I maintain a sugar free, organic paleo lifestyle (plenty of coconut oil), regularly consuming fermented foods, homemade kefir and tons of garlic. I take the best probiotic I could find (1MD) and have since my second trimester. I daily drink a homemade electrolyte drink made with raw ACV with the mother. So my typical lifestyle involves all the above recommendations aside from the vaginal suggestions. I just got a call from my OB that Im GBS+ for the third time. All my children have been born via C/S (failed vbac). My first was the only emergency c/s and was crowning when he was pushed back up with birth canal! during the c/s!!! He has serious gut issues that still impact his life 10 years later (and is the reason we are on an organic paleo diet with ferments, probiotics, and other supplements). We highly suspect ASD, though at this point he would probably not get a diagnosis due to all the improvements we’ve experienced in his communication skills, cognitive abilities, and reduction of sensory symptoms.
    I digress…
I will be trying the vaginal remedies that Katie suggested because there is a chance I could go into labor before the RSC and that would then put my baby at risk. Is it wrong to do the best I can to avoid my baby contracting GBS in the event of a quick spontaneous labor?!
Katie never said don’t get the antibiotics, she is educating women on what else they can do to minimize the risk of infection. I appreciate that Katie! And even though I’m going to implement her suggestions, I will still most likely also have the routine antibiotics during the RSC if all goes as planned. I think many read into her blog post words that weren’t there. She didn’t say don’t get the antibiotics, she essentially is saying “this is what else you can do to help fight off GBS, thus reducing the risk to your baby”… there’s no harm in that! Clearly Katie, other educated mother posting here, as well as myself know the danger of GBS and are not suggesting other to risk it. However there is also hard evidence that GBS can appear at any point in the pregnancy and can fluctuates. Women can test negative at the routine culture and then develop it or give birth before the routine test. There’s no perfect remedy. To avoid all GBS cases in all infants we’d have to do all c/s and all births with antibiotics and that still wouldn’t prevent all cases of infant GBS! Not to mention c/s and unwarranted antibiotic use carries risks and concerns of their own. I’ll say it again- what harm can it cause to try these natural methods in addition to remaining open to the fact that one might also have to have the antibiotics?
