If you have been a Wellness Mama reader for very long then you know my story and how it took me over seven years and eight doctors to finally figure out I had Hashimoto’s and start to find answers. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to get testing, even when you think you might know what is wrong.

That’s why I’m excited about emerging research and innovative new companies that are working to bring comprehensive testing to our homes. The best part? No doctor or blood test required!

Personalized Medicine: The Future of Health?

If you heard the recent 100th episode of The Wellness Mama Podcast, you know that I strongly feel that there is not a single perfect diet that works for everyone or a supplement that will fix all your problems. We all need sleep and community and sunshine, but the rest is very personalized based upon each individual’s needs.

What works wonderfully for one person may make someone else feel worse. I feel great when I take a lot of magnesium. Some people experience low blood pressure from taking it. I don’t feel good if I eat a lot of carbs. Some people feel amazing on a relatively high carb diet.

At the end of the day, we each have to figure out the foods, supplements, and lifestyle factors that are best for us.

But how?

Thankfully, today we don’t have to wait on a doctor to get insight into our health. There are now services with on-call doctors that are only a text or a call away.

Even without a doctor, we can do testing like 23 and Me, which shows our genes. This is helpful, but most of us aren’t geneticists and don’t know what the results mean. (Although you can get advice from a geneticist by listening my Wellness Mama Podcast … see episode 136 and episode 135). I know I have MAO-A and an MTHFR mutation, and thanks to research I’m able to make some dietary changes based on this, but the research is still new. It also only shows half of the picture.

Gut Metatranscriptome & Microbiome Analysis

I’m super excited about a new kind of testing that allows us to have a deeper picture of what is happening inside the gut. We’ve all heard the studies about the importance of the gut and how it impacts every single aspect of our lives, and now we can actually get a glimpse of what is happening inside the gut and know how to impact our own gut environment.

Microorganisms Rule Our Body

There are trillions of microorganisms in the gut (about 40 trillion to be exact). As humans, we have more bacterial cells than human cells and these bacteria drastically affect our lives on a daily basis.

These crucial gut organisms help us digest food, produce chemicals and substances within the body, control infections by pathogens, regulate the immune system, and even control emotions. (Ever have a gut feeling?)

Viome, a company I’m about to tell you more about, explains on their website:

Studies consistently link these microorganisms — which make up your gut microbiome — to many chronic conditions, including diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, coronary artery disease, psoriasis, lupus, and even autism.

Basically, if we want to be healthy and happy … our gut bacteria needs to be healthy and happy too!

The Science of Microbiome Composition

Flashback to freshman biology …

Every living organism produces RNA molecules from their DNA. Tests like this one sequence all of the RNA in the stool (poop) to help quantify all of the living microorganisms in the gut (bacteria, viruses, bacteriophages, archaea, fungi, yeast, parasites, and more) at the species and strain level.

The end result?

A more in-depth view of your gut microbiome than has ever been available before. Instead of just looking at bacteria and parasites, we can now sequence RNA in the gut. The nerd in me is so excited about this technology, but even if you aren’t interested in the science, I think you’ll be excited about how technology like this can improve all of our lives!

The Function of Metabolites in the Gut

Identifying the microorganisms in your gut is important, but understanding their function is what lets us use them to our advantage.

Viome explains:

This is because the microbes in your gut produce thousands of chemicals, called metabolites, that affect your overall wellness. Some of these metabolites are beneficial to health, such as B-vitamins and short chain fatty acids. Others can be harmful, such as Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which is linked to coronary artery disease.

This variation in gut microbes may explain in large part why people have such individualized needs when it comes to health.

Gut Microbiome Testing to Improve Health

Analyzing the genes that microbes express lets us identify which metabolites they produce. This helps determine their role in your body’s ecosystem. But all of that isn’t helpful if it is just data. When we understand metabolites, we can also understand how to affect them with food, lifestyle, and supplements to change the gut bacteria.

This is the first time we have the ability to fine-tune the function of gut microbiome. This helps minimize production of harmful metabolites and maximize the production of beneficial ones.

The metabolites in our gut give us a shortcut to know what to eat and what to take to improve wellness in the fastest way possible.

How to Test Gut Microbiome at Home

Now for why I’m so excited … about testing poop! (It’s not just because I’m a mom of boys, either.)

Until recently, most gut testing cost thousands of dollars and had to be ordered through a doctor. Testing also provided an incomplete picture of gut health and used the old 16S method of sequencing.

The 16S method analyzes the bacteria in the gut, but as I showed above, this is an incomplete picture. To fully analyze the bacteria, viruses, bacteriophages, archaea, fungi, yeast, parasites, and other organisms, a more complete testing is needed.

Viome: Gut Testing in Your Own Bathroom

That is until a company changed all that. Viome uses an advanced form of testing to analyze gut health and provide personalized recommendations of supplements, diet, and lifestyle factors.

Viome does a specialized form of testing called metatranscriptome sequencing. It looks at the RNA, metabolites, and the deeper picture of the gut.

Here’s how Viome is better than the old 16S method:

  • identifies all bacteria and all other living organisms in your gut (16S can only identify a fraction)
  • pinpoints down to the species and strain level (not just the genus)
  • measures biochemical/microbe activities (16S could not)
  • less variation in results
  • identifies missing metabolites

Basically Viome gives a much more complete and precise picture you can actually act on with dietary and lifestyle changes.

What Viome Gut Tests Reveal

Viome looks at the gut in all the ways I just explained. It also does a metabolic intelligence test (that you can do from home). This helps you gauge your blood sugar, insulin levels, stress responses, and more by looking at urine pH, saliva pH, blood sugar, heart rate, and other metrics.

Specifically, the test will help you learn:

  • how to maximize beneficial microbial species that boost gut health (and minimize the problematic ones)
  • which missing beneficial bacteria (probiotics) your gut needs
  • whether you are lacking good metabolites (and which undesirable ones are present)
  • which prebiotics you need for the foundation of gut health
  • the ideal ratio of proteins, carbs, and fats you need in your individualized diet
  • dietary recommendations for achieving healthy weight, energy, focus, and well-being
  • ways to optimize digestion and absorption of nutrients in your gut

Here’s How the Test Works:

  1. Order the test kit from Viome here.
  2. Viome sends a test kit to your home.
  3. You complete the test at home. (Don’t worry … it’s easy!)
  4. Then you mail your poop to Viome (yes, really) and record your metabolic results in their app.
  5. A few weeks later, Viome provides personalized analysis of your gut and recommendations to help you improve chronic conditions, feel better, and keep your gut microorganisms happy.

What My Viome Test Revealed

I’m so excited about this and other emerging technology that helps us all do our own research. With every chronic disease on the rise, these are problems we need to address right away. Companies and tests like Viome help us understand our own personalized needs in a way that helps us improve our lives in a drastic way.

I should also admit that I was skeptical when I first got my results and saw some of the foods that it suggested I should avoid. After all, some of the foods are ones I’d consider objectively “healthy,” and I wasn’t sure why I should avoid them.

Interestingly, after some further genetic testing, Viome was right on and the foods it recommended I avoid (including most sources of saturated fat) match up with my genes!

A Look Inside My Gut

I like that Viome shows overall scores for gut health, metabolic health and other metrics so you can see progress:

Wellness mama Viome gut Score

But the app and portal also give practical interpretation and food recommendations. These recommendations lined up with what I’ve noticed from my time on the AIP diet and also from my genetic testing. As I mentioned, I was initially surprised by some of the foods it suggested that I avoid, but I noticed a BIG difference when I removed them and they lined up with my most recent genetic tests as well.

These are some of my “Foods to Enjoy” according to Viome (not showing proteins and fats):

Viome is a new technology using advanced testing developed at Los Alamos Lab (that was originally part of national security). I first learned about it when I met their founder, Naveen Jain, at a recent health event and was very impressed with the technology behind it. It has become popular very quickly, so at times there has been a waiting list to take the test, but you can learn more about Viome at this link.

P.S. Testing Is Not the Only Way

Insight from testing is helpful especially for those with chronic conditions. If testing isn’t for you right now, here are 7 totally free ways to start improving health (including gut health).

More Research & Why I Care

Gut health is intricately tied to all aspects of health. If you’re interested in the science and emerging connection between gut health to overall health, here are a few recent studies for further reading:

Update: My Viome Test Results Explained

Viome’s lead medical researcher, Dr. Helen Messier, was kind enough to shoot the following video explaining my test results and breaks down the app recommendations based on my own gut bacteria. She also explains how the food recommendations work and how to use Viome most effectively.

This article was medically reviewed by Dr. Scott Soerries, MD, Family Physician and Medical Director of SteadyMD/Lemonaid Health. As always, this is not personal medical advice and we recommend that you talk with your doctor.

Thank you for the video! Are you planning on posting updates of noticeable changes from following their suggestions? Will you retest in the future to track your progress?
Researching this service is confusing because many practitioners are impressed, but many people write bad reviews as well. I wonder if these people have unrealistic expectations? I’d guess that noticeable changes would take at least 4-6 mo. but I see no reviews of anyone who has tracked their results that long.
Anyway, I saw in your video some bacteria were found that are linked to issues similar to mine such as leaky gut, slow motility, inflammation and sibo- I asked viome what to expect on that front when following their suggestions, and they replied that some people see improvements with those symptoms and some don’t. I’m wondering if your readers would be interested in what can result from such detailed knowledge of your own micro biome.P.S: In the video it said that no commercial probiotic strains were found in your samples. Can I ask if you were taking any at the time, maybe they weren’t strong enough or plentiful enough to be detected? Or were you just not taking any at the time? I try different probiotics every once in a while, but with all the supplements I cycle through- I’m not sure if any of them make a difference….

I just watched your Viome review. Were you taking probiotics when you took this test (as they didn’t show up in this review)? And if so, do you still take them despite?

Is there a way one can simply get just the test results for a cheaper price? The rest seems superfluous. I don’t want a year of their tracking app.
Also, this site obviously seems pro Viome. I’m wondering if wellness mama is getting kick backs to promote Viome? It’s important for me to know others motives when considering to buy something.

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

Yes, I am very much pro Viome. I’ve spent time with their founder, have personally taken the testing (along with MANY others over the years), and have been very impressed with the results, as they have lined up exactly with other testing I’ve done, but in a much more comprehensive manner. As with many links found on site, I’m an affiliate for Viome, so if you decide to purchase through my link, I get a small percentage. The price is the same for you, and in many cases cheaper, as I’m able to negotiate discounts for my readers. You can read my affiliate policy here. Here’s the thing with every link you’ll find on my website though: I ONLY recommend and promote items that I’ve personally tried, vetted, and would recommend with or without an affiliate commission. My goal is to provide the best information and resources available for moms, and that is and always will be my primary motivation.

Would the Viome information address leaky gut(if you followed their recommendations)? I understand that leaky gut is the basis of a lot of autoimmune diseases(would you agree with my statement about that?

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

From my understanding, it does address leaky gut and I would agree with you that leaky gut is a big key to autoimmune disease. Viome is looking at specifically what foods your gut can and can’t handle, and by lowering stress and inflammation in the gut, should help resolve leaky gut as well.

I took the Viome test and was very disappointed in the results. I had listed the many food allergies I have in the pretest online questionaire. When I got the test results, many of the foods they recommended were on the allergy list I’d given them. I couldn’t use the results at all, really.

I recently was lucky enough to be given a ticket to hear Deepak Chopra speak and he talked about this and similar tests, like microbiome analysis. Some of it was eye-opening yet not the great leap that it might have been for many because I’m a voracious reader of both crime fiction and non-fiction archeology texts where they can track places that people have lived for periods of time by looking for specific things like water additives in the more currently deceased and other things like vitamins and other surprises in the soil or diet of certain regions in the case of ancient dead.

I will be eagerly watching this developing science and its uses. However, until the prices come down or insurance companies start to cover more (if any) of the costs, I’ll have to sit on the sidelines. I don’t think it will happen in my lifetime but my hope is that eventually we will learn more about the brain and be able to combine this science with that knowledge to attack and treat at least some forms of mental illness. Fingers crossed.

This technology is exactly what I have been looking for. I been on a similar journey like yours trying to figure out what supplements & foods are really helping my gut health and what’s hurting it. I have Cystic fibrosis and knowing this information from these tests will provide an amazing amount of information into how my body responds to things as it is different from the average person. I think this will be the future of assisting chronic disease individuals like myself on how to help themselves find the balance within the genetic imbalance that most cystic fibrosis doctors or Western medicine doctors don’t address. Thank you so very much for all that you do. With much Aloha and love from Hawaii.

Amna—it is really really easy and TOTALLY painless! I am needle phobic-seriously-and I was able to do this on my own. The process uses a very small instrument to take, literally, 1 tiny drop of blood from your finger. I was so proud of myself! Lol. You’ll be perfectly fine!

    1. amna Avatar

Thank you for the feedback, Tracy – That’s very helpful to know from someone who’s in the same boat as far as needles go! 🙂

  9. amna Avatar

How is a blood glucose response generated? Is it the same instrument used to gauge levels in diabetes? I’m interested in a kit but I’ve seen my mother use that instrument and it doesn’t seem pretty!

  10. Tracy Avatar

Thrilled to see a little of your results! I also took the test and have results and recommendations. They’re interesting . . .I’m sceptical though. I took them to a nutritionist, and she, too, was sceptical – but admitted this is a new science and she doesn’t know that much about it, which was fair. I’m tracking all that I eat and hope that I’m elevating my health level. I’d love to compare notes with someone who actually did this!

    1. Melissa Avatar

I am patiently waiting for my test results. I hope to have them in 2 weeks. I suffer from eczema, psoriasis, poor sleep, and some mood swings. I really hope that I can finally figure out what foods to nuture my guy and body with. I have taken the food sensitives blood test and diligently followed that diet for a year with no change. I only felt better when I did AIP dieting but that is so restrictive I got depressed even though my skin and gut where happy I was miserable. So stay tuned.

      1. Melissa Avatar

I received my test results about 3 weeks ago and made the diet changes. I do feel better. I do miss some foods on my avoid/minimize list. I love the video from Dr Helen that Katie shared with her results. Unfortunately Viome cannot provide that to everyone. Meaning you get your raw data and numbers. I would like to have my numbers analyzed as well. I am hoping to to feel better soon by changing my eating which was not a huge change for me. More broccoli for me and quiona and less potatoes and corn and sheep’s cheese. My eczema and psoriasis did flare for about 2 weeks as I was detoxing I think so that was hard. I am hopeful to feel better soon consistently.

  11. Falynn Avatar

I did viome over the past couple of months. It was neat to see what was in my gut and what wasn’t. They didn’t really know what the function of most of the bacteria was. I felt like my diet recommendation was based mostly on the questionnaire I answered at the beginning of the process. I also didn’t feel comfortable taking the metabolic powder.

Katie- did you take the powder? I almost posted and asked you how to avoid it. Instead I tested my sugar fasting and did a carb spike, then had to lie and say I drank the powder to get the result.

Not as impressed as I wanted to be. Could I go back and not waste my money, I would. Same with 23 and me…it’s cool but for all the money my husband and I spent on these genome/biome services this year…we don’t know anything we didn’t already know…

Hey Katie- I love all the information you provide- you’re a powerhouse- thank you! I did Viome testing on your recommendation, but interpreting the results for the biology of my gut and the RNA is difficult. Do you have any resources, advice or basic guide to help decode the results?
Thank you for all your incredible support and information.

Hi! Have you shared your results in a post? I am considering Viome and am interested to know your thoughts of the results and any changes you have made based on them.

Is there only a yearly plan option now with Viome? I would love to do the test, but it looks like a year commitment at $400.

  15. Sohail Avatar

    Dear Katie,

Thank you for sharing this new Gut testing method. What are your thoughts on the efficacy of Viome’s Gut testing vs the Gold standard 16s Gut testing. Tim Steele from his blog potatohack, who also holds a master’s degree in biotechnology also looked into viome, among other “new/cutting edge” gut testing modalities and suggests that there hasn’t been any validating studies on viome’s propietary methods thus far.
He writes “Perhaps Jain has invented a better way to test gut flora than the world’s standard, 16S. But if he has, he’s not talking about it and there are no papers describing it, that I can find. And after 2 years of biotech graduate studies, I can tell you that I have not heard of anything better than 16S for analyzing gut bacteria. Or anything else. Period.”

I am so grateful for you presenting Viome but at the same time I want to make an informed and confident decision that Viome truly *IS* the new “Best” gut testing method out there for, esp. because I am battling a very bad leaky gut causing awful symptoms.

What are your thoughts on Viomes propietary gut testing methodology vs the 16s stool/gut bacteria test?

Hello again, wondering if you have any results yet and if so have you put suggestions into practice with any results. Thanks.

Hi there. I recently found your blog and am blown away by the wealth of information. I am a mom with babies and little ones at home and although many mothers complain of fatigue…which totally makes sense…I have been struggling with fatigue my whole life. After reading so many articles I am feeling overwhelmed at where to even begin looking for answers, as the cause for this could be multiple things- leaky gut, heavy metals, etc. Do you have a recommendation of a good place to begin? We are on a very limited income currently and like I said I am seriously lacking energy…and time. Many thanks for sharing all your knowledge!!!
