Understanding Generational Toxins and Epigenetic Changes with Dr. Mindy Pelz

I’m here today with Dr. Mindy Pelz, who is such a wealth of information I don’t even really know where to start! Dr. Mindy has built one of the largest natural family wellness clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area. She’s especially knowledgeable on the role of generational toxins on health — a long term that simply means the toxins we pass on to our kids.

Dr. Mindy Pelz on Generational Toxins

It turns out we pass on more to our kids than our eye or hair color. Kids can also inherit mom’s bioaccumulation of toxins and heavy metals from their time in utero. This isn’t something to feel guilty about, but it is a hidden factor to consider when we’re trying to solve any health struggles our kids may have.

Dr. Mindy looks at all aspects of a person’s health using everything from gut repair to functional nutrition testing to heavy metal testing, fasting, supplements, chiropractic care, and even mindfulness. She’s even worked with Olympic and professional athletes!

I know we all wish we had more doctors like her around, so it’s great to get a chance to get some of her great advice on the podcast today.

In This Episode You’ll Learn

  • the two main areas of toxins we can pass down to our kids … and how it happens
  • why epigenetics is an area of health we can’t ignore
  • ways to navigate an increasingly toxic world (and protect our kids)
  • why families share a microbiome … and how to protect and repair it
  • easy (and safe) ways to introduce fasting, detoxing, and the ketogenic diet in a family
  • how to test kids for bacterial diversity and generational toxins
  • clues that tell whether or not your children might benefit from testing
  • and more!

This podcast is brought to you by Vivos. This is something we recently invested in for our entire family and we are absolutely loving it! Here’s why. So, data shows that the nutrition we receive in utero determines our palate development and how narrow or open our airway and jaw structure are. So a narrow mouth, jaw, and airway increase the chances of needing braces, of getting sleep apnea, breathing difficulties, and much more. Vivos has created a non-invasive, non-surgical, easy way of widening the maxilla, the jaw, and the airway. So for our kids, this means that they get to avoid the braces that my husband and I both had. It also means my husband’s sleep apnea has disappeared and he stopped snoring, which is a bonus for me. I’ll be writing more about this soon but you can check them out in the meantime at wellnessmama.com/go/vivos.

This podcast is brought to you by Homebiotic. We all know about our microbiome and most of us know about our oral microbiome and even our skin microbiome. But it’s easy to forget that we live in a microbial environment as well and our home environment influences our health too. The overuse of disinfectants and harsh cleansers has led to an overgrowth of less than optimal bacteria in many homes. Those of us with little kids have children sitting on the floor of our homes and interacting with that bacteria on a daily basis. So, my solution to this has been Homebiotic. This is a natural probiotic spray for the home that neutralizes odors, germs, and even mold. You can check it out at wellnessmama.com/go/home-biotic.

  1. Hi Katie,

I love your website and enjoy listening to your podcasts! You are a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate your passion to help others. I have a podcast request, I would love to hear about how childhood trauma can affect parenting and possibly some natural treatments for the effects of PTSD. I’m trying my best to stay off prescription drugs but it’s tough some days. Thanks in advance!

  2. Wow guys, what an awesome, informative and encouraging talk! I’ve been trying the Keto diet little by little with my boyfriend. He’s been super strict with himself and lost 17lbs since the New Year! I am struggling a little with Multiple Sclerosis and am scrambling to find a natural way to help my symptoms, set a good example for my 7 year old and be strong and supportive for my man. All the advice you guys have given us is very reassuring to what I’ve been researching over the years. Like you said it’s hard to find a doctor like Dr. Mindy! And our Wellness Mama is always on top of her game! So thank you for all the information. I hope to try some of these products listed for my little family out here in NY. All the best health to Mamas everywhere!

  3. I am a child of a Vietnam veteran who was exposed to agent orange. This is a very interesting topic for me, as me and my siblings are having issues with autoimmune disorders. This validates some of the conversations we have had with each other as to if his exposure has played a role in our health. Thank you for this podcast.

  4. What is the name of the person you mention in the podcast that you think is one of the smartest people you know? I wanted to look him up. Thanks.

  5. I love your podcasts! Have you heard of redox signaling molecules and have you thought of doing a podcast on it? I’ve done many detoxing and this has been the only solution for me and my daughter who suffers from severe eczema.

  6. I did not realize that one of your children were born via c-section. I would love to hear what you did for yourself and your child after the c-section to get your health back in order. I tried natural births with all three of my children and ended up with c-sections each time. I was shocked. I had never even heard of giving my children probiotics until my third was born so my first two, unfortunately, received none after birth. I breastfeed all of them past a year. I was able to get them to a chiropractor within the first week of birth. I did give my third child probiotics. My second child has Type 1 Diabetes, and I’m pretty sure my third has some sort of eczema. I would love to hear how you treat your child’s eczema. I would also love to hear you interview other natural experts in this field of c-sections and what mothers should do for themselves and their children afterwards to get their health in good shape.

  7. Hi Katie! Thankyou so much for bringing people together in this way to share information. As I looked into the Vibrant Blue Oils from that episode, I saw that they recommended against using EOs to detox during pregnancy since the toxins go to the fetus. Then I went to a new chiropractor for Nutrition Response Testing, and he informed me that we would not be able to detox while I am breastfeeding since the toxins go through the breastmilk to the baby. I nursed my first child to almost 2 years old, and my second is 7months. I would like to also nurse him as long as possible but also have my kids a little closer together. Do I really need to stop breastfeeding and have a large break before I get pregnant again? I’ll do it if it will help me and all my future kids to have better help by detoxing! But also, if the thing that causes detoxing in the mother also goes to the baby, as well as the toxins, is it possible the toxins won’t actually “stick” and the baby will detox at the same time as receiving the exposure?

  8. Thank you so much for this great podcast- I found it so informative! I’m curious, where can I have the microbiome test done that was mentioned in this episode? I’m very interested in learning more about that!

    Thank you!

  9. Hi Katie! Is there anyway you could share the title of the article discussed in the episode about the mice and the one exposed to BPA? Thanks!

  10. Hey Katie, what is the name of the second supplement Mindy mentions for detoxing? It sounded like she said “liquid Moore’s”? Not finding anything online and was hoping to look up the resources.

    Thank you!
