115: Decoding Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Tom O’Bryan

Decoding Autoimmune Disease with Dr. Tom O'Bryan

Most of you know about my (not so fun) journey with Hashimoto’s, a challenging autoimmune disease. It’s been a long road with more questions than answers at times. I’m so fortunate to meet people like Dr. Tom O’Bryan along the way to help me understand this silent driver of so many modern diseases.

Not sure if autoimmune disease affects you? If you live a generally healthy lifestyle and still have a host of symptoms, don’t miss this episode!

Dr. Tom O’Bryan on Autoimmune Disease Symptoms, Signs, and Causes

Dr. Tom is world-renowned expert on why autoimmune disease happens and what it really is. He serves on the faculty of the Institute of Functional Medicine and brought about the first Gluten Summit, gathering 29 experts from around the world to explore the real connection between gluten sensitivity and autoimmune disease.

Tom is also the author of the incredible book The Autoimmune Fix: How to Stop the Hidden Autoimmune Damage That Keeps You Sick, Fat, and Tired Before It Turns Into Disease. In it Dr. Tom shows his talent for translating the science behind autoimmune disease in a way we can all understand.

What’s more, I love his passion for reaching the next generation with this all-important message about the root cause of so many modern diseases. Take a listen and I think you’ll agree this is best explanation you’ve ever heard about this crucial (and sometimes confusing) topic.

In This Episode You’ll Learn

  • the hidden reason even why people who take care of their health get diseases
  • how to get to the bottom of autoimmune disease and discover what’s triggering it

  1. Episode doesn’t seem to be showing up in my podcast app on iPhone?

  2. Dr. O’Bryan does an incredible job of explaining the information that he shares, in a way that is understandable.
Thank you Katie for having Dr. O’Bryan on your podcast, and for all that you do to educate your listeners so that we can learn how to be healthier ourselves, and how to help our families to be healthier. I have learned so much since discovering this podcast!

  3. Do you have the name of the test that he gives to patients that gives the markers for antibodies and antigens? I did not see it with the resources information.

Thank you for another great podcast.

  4. I loved it! Dr. O’Bryan has been my favorite ever since I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Someone told me about him and I have been a fan ever since. He is a wealth of of great information. His Gluten Free Summit has been an absolute life saver for me. Thank you so much for doing this interview with him.

  5. Did he happen to mention the testing that we should get ( what he said he would in the beginning) or did I miss it?

  6. Lauren nailed it! This was one of my favorite podcasts (I’ve already shared it numerous times). Thanks Katie!

  7. Do you have any idea where I can find the Johns Hopkins study Dr. O’Bryan mentions that says that, “asthma is not a disease of the lung”? Not having much luck with Google.

  8. I’m obviously technology challenged because I can’t figure out how to get to the podcast show notes. I love all your podcasts and even after listening to a podcast where you explained how to do it, I’m still confused. I’m sorry, but could you tell me where to find the notes? You have such good info, thanks for all you do!

    • The content right above this comment is the “show notes”. If you’re looking for the full transcript, you can download that via the link directly under the audio player that says “View Transcript”.

  9. Hi Katy,
I would like Dr Tom to give some more information on the validity of using IgG to indicate food sensitivities and intolerances, I’m assuming this is the test he uses. I haven’t found any reputable source of peer reviewed articles that says this is a valid method. In fact one paper says that children with allergies to food who also had IgG antibodies to those foods were more likely to grow out of the allergy after age five than those who didn’t have the IgG antibodies. So they were suggesting that the IgG antibodies were having a possible moderating effect on the IgE antibodies involved in the allergic reaction. I would love more information on the research he was referring to in your conversation! Thanks Katy! I did love this episode, it had a lot of great information!

  10. So loved this podcast! I could have listened to him all day and had so many more questions! Please have him back sometime!!!!!

  11. Brilliant podcast – and love having the transcript – really interesting to understand how cutting out wheat imbalances your gut health so dramatically… and how you can improve that, really quite easily, cheaply and naturally. It makes so much sense, off to try out the advice now! Thank you so much for sharing! 🙂
