You’ve probably heard horror stories of 3-foot tapeworms camping out in someone’s gut. Most parasites though are so small they can only be seen with a microscope! Millions (if not billions!) of people around the world have parasites. Many don’t even know it.

Intestinal Parasites

There’s a very good chance you have yeast overgrowth or intestinal worms. The CDC estimates over 60 million in the US are chronically infected with toxoplasmosis. And at least 14% of us have been exposed to toxocariasis. And that’s just in a developed country.

Countries with poor sanitation and poor hygiene due to economic factors are even more likely to have issues. The World Health Organization estimates over 700,000 people worldwide die each year from parasites and vector-borne pathogens. The prevalence of parasitic diseases is likely much higher than estimates.

Our bodies are literally crawling with hundreds of strains of yeasts and bacteria. The digestive tract alone holds more than three pounds of bacteria. We need them in the right balance for good digestion and nutrient absorption in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are the good guys and have a huge impact on our health.

Out of Balance

When the good bacteria get out of balance, problems begin. There are many risk factors including diet, certain medications, stress, contact with infected sources, and others. Our bodies also host naturally occurring yeasts. When we have an overgrowth this can have a big impact on health (and not in a good way). While vaginal yeast infections may sound familiar, they’re usually a sign of a much larger infection.

The most disturbing invaders to our bodies, in my opinion, are parasites. Sadly, most people carry these guys around too. Studies have found that most people, especially those with chronic diseases and cancer, are host to at least one kind of parasite.

Parasites can range from tiny ones only seen by a microscope to long tapeworms (several feet long). A tapeworm can live for 30+ years and parasite infections can last for years!

Different Types of Parasites

We don’t really want to think about the creepy crawlies in our gastrointestinal tract. But it’s important to know what we’re dealing with here. With the high prevalence of intestinal parasites, there are a whole range of different types. Common intestinal parasites include:

  • Whipworms – Nearly 800 million worldwide have whipworms. They hang out in the large intestine and are a type of helminth infection. It’s transmitted by fecal contaminated soil and contaminated food grown in that soil. Lighter infections don’t even have symptoms.
  • Tapeworm infection – Tapeworms can cause intestinal parasitic infections but they can also travel to other parts of the body. Young tapeworms form cysts and can live in other organs, including the brain, liver, spine, and heart.
  • Roundworms – The larvae can infect various body tissues. Ascariasis is also a type of roundworm. Mature worms like living in the gastrointestinal tract, blood, and lymphatic system.
  • Pinworms – These are the most common intestinal worm infection in the US. The females lay thousands of eggs while their host is asleep. This can cause intense itching on the anus and restless sleep. The microscopic eggs are most commonly spread between young children. It’s important to regularly wash all sheets, pajamas, and underwear. You’ll also want to treat the whole family if one of you has it.
  • Hookworm Infection – Along with Ascaris, hookworms are a helminth parasite. They live in the small intestine and attach to the intestinal wall and cause blood loss. Many infected people don’t have symptoms.
  • Entamoeba histolytica – The CDC estimates only 10-20% of people with E. Histolytica show symptoms. It’s more common in tropical regions or you can pick it up by visiting one. Those living in unsanitary conditions or men in homosexual relationships are also at risk.
  • Protozoan – Protozoa infections, like giardia and giardia lamblia, are microscopic. They infect the blood and can be transmitted from one person to another through mosquito or bug bites. They can also infect the human intestinal tract and be transmitted through feces.
  • Cryptosporidium – Aka crypto, this parasite is one of the most common waterborne diseases in the US. You can get it from the ingestion of contaminated food or water, including while swimming. It can cause symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Not everyone who is infected has symptoms, but they can still pass it to others for about 2 months after infection. Those with a weakened immune system are most at risk for serious symptoms.

How Do We Get Parasites?

Parasites can enter the body in a variety of ways, depending on the type. You can get it through contact with contaminated soil, eating raw or undercooked meats, or even from bug bites. If you’re traveling to a developing country or drink contaminated water you’re also at risk. Because some parasites are microscopic and live on surfaces for several weeks, they’re easy to spread.

Treating parasites is a 3 step process. First, we have to kill the invaders, then they (and the toxins they create) need to be flushed from the body. Finally, we need to support the body in healing and regenerating itself.

How to Tell If You Have Parasites

There are many symptoms directly or indirectly associated with parasites. If you have several of these symptoms, there’s a good chance you have an infestation. Remember that some parasites don’t even cause symptoms though!

Symptoms of Parasites

  • Lowered immune system and constant illness
  • Rectal itching, especially at night
  • Digestive problems like bloating, cramps, constipation, diarrhea, or nausea
  • Bloating and gas
  • Tired all the time
  • Floaters or spots in the eyes
  • Trouble sleeping and teeth grinding at night
  • Anemia
  • Asthma
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Psoriasis or eczema
  • Extreme hunger
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Plus many more…

If left untreated, Candida, yeast, and parasite overgrowth have been linked to a plethora of chronic conditions. Yeast and Parasites are often found in people with the following conditions:

  • Infertility or permanent fertility damage
  • Cancer
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Malnutrition
  • Vitamin Deficiencies
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • Kidney Stones
  • Chron’s Disease
  • Skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Digestive problems of all kinds

Conventional Parasite Treatments

Typically your healthcare provider will order a stool test. Stool samples that don’t contain live, visible parasites are considered negative. PCR tests though can detect dead or dormant parasites. If someone tests positive they can be prescribed anti-parasitic drugs.

Natural Remedies for Intestinal Parasites

The good news is there are effective natural treatments to help the body kill and remove parasites. If you suspect that you have an issue, you might consider some of the treatments below.

Change What You Eat

Since parasites thrive in a weakened immune system, eating healthy is one of our best defenses. Lots of sugar depresses our immune system and causes microbe imbalances. I recommend getting rid of all processed sugar and even reducing natural sugars. Sources like honey and high-sugar fruits can still cause problems during an active infection.

Some natural stevia is ok once in a while, but avoid anything that gives the body a sugar source and feeds yeast or parasites. Also, consider skipping dairy to give your body a boost. Eating healthy whole foods is a must!

Sweat it Out

As your body kills off parasites, their toxic by-products must be removed from the body. Some of these (like heavy metals) are best removed through the sweat glands. Work up a sweat by exercising, using the sauna, or even working in the garden! Taking cayenne is another good way to kick up the heat.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

This naturally occurring substance has an amazing ability to kill parasites and parasite eggs. It’s naturally high in the silica we need for hair, skin, and nail growth. Plus it has trace minerals and can help restore body tissue and improve digestion.

I start with 1 tsp a day in 8 ounces of water and work up to 1-2 Tablespoons a day. Be sure to only use food-grade DE. Taking DE may also cause a Herxheimer reaction (see more below).

Apple Cider Vinegar

What can’t apple cider vinegar do? It may help lower blood sugar, improves digestion, and kills harmful pathogens. It helps the body detox for clearer skin and a healthier body. While it won’t kill parasites on its own, it strengthens the body’s defenses against pathogens.

ACV is strong on its own so be sure to take it in water. I start with 1 teaspoon up to 3 times a day, 30 minutes before a meal. You can increase up to a Tablespoon at a time.

Probiotics

Probiotics help restore the helpful gut bacteria that are wiped out by parasites (or antibiotics or hormonal birth control). We need these good bugs for a healthy gut. I include lots of fermented foods in my diet, and I also like this probiotic supplement. Just don’t take them within an hour of ACV or diatomaceous earth though!

Herbs and Spices

Garlic is a powerhouse when it comes to pathogens and parasites. You can include minced raw garlic cloves liberally in your diet.

Cinnamon is another natural remedy for parasites. You can use ½ teaspoon of high-quality cinnamon powder in water, kefir, or coconut milk yogurt up to three times a day.

Anti-parasitic essential oils include clove, eucalyptus, fennel, and white camphor. These are great to diffuse or can be diluted and used topically. Consult with a qualified aromatherapist before using any essential oils internally.

Herbs commonly used for parasites include andrographis and a blend of clove, wormwood, and black walnut hull. You can also use digestion and immune boosting herbs to strengthen your body’s natural defenses. Be sure to do your research before trying any new herbal regimen!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant and great for immune support. It’s also helpful for parasite infections. If you have parasite symptoms you can use 5 grams of vitamin C per day spread out in 2-3 doses. Too much can cause loose stools so you can adjust the dose down if needed.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural, mild anti-fungal, and very nourishing to the body. If you’re not already using it in your cooking, it also tastes great blended into coffee or tea. You can add several tablespoons a day for healthy fats and to support healthy bowel movements as you’re eliminating toxins. Personally, I don’t use coconut oil as much anymore and mainly use olive oil.

Herxheimer’s Reaction

Sometimes getting rid of parasites can be uncomfortable. Herxheimer’s reaction, named after the German doctor who discovered it, is basically a die-off reaction. Trying to treat parasites and infections quickly or with potent remedies can cause a Herx reaction.

It’s best to be on an anti-yeast/parasite diet for several weeks before even starting supplements, This can help minimize reactions. You can start with small doses of apple cider vinegar and diatomaceous earth. Work your way up to help keep the die-off symptoms at bay.

You may even find that you “catch a cold” a week or so after starting to treat your yeast and parasite symptoms. This is actually a mild Herxheimer reaction. Backing down supplements and drinking more water should help it pass quickly.

Other Important Notes on Intestinal Parasites

Removing parasites is a difficult job for your body. It’s important to support your body during the process. Regular exercise, a good diet, adequate sleep, and limiting exposure to toxins all help!

Epsom salt baths are another excellent way to help detox through the skin. I like to use 1/2 cup of Epsom salts in hot bath water or try one of these detox bath recipes.

Be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out die-off toxins faster. And of course, plenty of sleep gives the body enough time to regenerate and heal. I aim for at least 9 hours a night. It’s also very important to skip the sugar and refined carbs as these make the process much slower. Raw vegetables and healthy fiber sources help keep your energy levels up and clean the body faster.

thanks for being a great mamma for all us who may not have learned these things from our own parents 🙂 Personally my body looks good – skinny guy, but ever since starting university and moving away from home (7 years ago) my eating habits have caused my health to gradually deteriorate to the point where I was constantly getting sick with some infection and I couldn’t perform well in things that mean a lot to me… so it was time to change and start loving life and living it to the max or suffer through each day. the choice was clear!

    God Bless 🙂

Psalmist7777 Katie, U R the only one other than myself that I know of that recommends DE and ACV for Candida and parasite natural remedies, which I have after many years of trying other remedies to not much avail, have personally experienced. For that reason I was greatly pleased to read your article about Candida. I disagree with one thing however; Kumbucha tea. I greatly enjoy Kumbucha tea but believe that the alcohol, or fermentation or whatever was mucho detrimental to my healing a few years back. I would love for you to prove me wrong, but that is what I seemed to experience. Also, I have been extremely underweight all my life and no matter what or how much I eat haven’t gained weight. I have taken DE for awhile now with EXCELLENT results (better than anything ever for Candida) but am just starting recently with ACV, as I read in the Braggs ACV book that it is good for Candida and for the underweight. The DE put no weight on me, but since starting the ACV a couple of weeks ago I have gained a couple of pounds. The ACV really has had STRONG affects good and bad (die off is the bad) (clear sinuses and energy is some of the good) in the short time on it. My wife is also on it, but the DE gave her severe heart problems, as it did with another female friend of mine. They both felt like they were having heart attacks.
Any comments to what I’ve mentioned are appreciated. God Bless!

I’d recommend people look in to the Bulletproof Diet. It’s definitely built for clearing parasitic junk out of your body, and giving you far more energy (and mental fuel) than regular carb-based diets. 🙂

I just watched a video about parasites that was just plain, well terrifying, so I really want to try some remedies, and change up my diet to see if I feel better. Thanks for this post! I a totally buying the diatomaceous earth, the reviews are amazing! 🙂

Every morning I make a warm glass of water with 1/2 a lemon and 2 tablespoons of ACV. I use this to take my probiotics. I see you mentioned to not take ACV and probiotics within an hour of each other. Just curious why? Thanks so much this article is fantastic:)

    Hi wellness mama!
I found your article very helpful. I have been fighting candida since May and haven’t been as successful as I’d hoped as I have not had the expected results with the things I’ve used (cleanses, enzymes, etc). I think it’s worse than when I had it back in 2007 bc I have struggle with a lot more die-off and my immune sys. is now also much more compromised. However, my husband and I are trying to get pregnant and I really want to know 1) what is safe (and SLOW!…no toxic die-off!) to effectively deal w/candida in pre-pregnancy and pregnancy and 2) how I can support my immune system. I read somewhere that the body needs to reduce immunity when pregnant so your body doesn’t attack the baby. But I do feel the need for immune support big time!!! Thanks!

i have been taking diatomaceous earth for several months and i am still passing parts of worms. then yesterday i saw a live bug in my stool. are there bugs that live in your intestines, too? will diatomaceous earth kill these bugs as well?

    Dear Katie.
My 16 year old had all sort of parasites, yeast and H.ylori, 2 2/1 years ago, which we treated naturally. One year later it returned and she took one dose of antibiotic with high potency probiotics and being careful with diet. As she is 16, is almost impossible to keep her away of sugars for days, let alone weeks or months. That’s why I try to supplement with probiotics, multi vits, D3, Brewers, yeast and omega 3.
she is starting to present same symptoms of discomfort at meal times.
Reading wonders here about DE, I wonder if it is very safe to give her small doses first as it cuts bug out and also, our inner intestine walls.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Regards!

Hi! First of all, I love the stuff I read here because it’s so down to earth and it offers such a natural option to everyday things we do, use, eat, etc these days…
I want to congratulate you and encourage you too keep doing it because it’s what this too modernised society needs these days…
I have lately heard about the DIATOMACEOUS EARTH and was thinking of using it for my children against parasites. Could you please advise me if it’s suitable for children under 2 and what the dosage is? Should it be taken daily for two weeks and then have a break and another two weeks, or should it be used daily for whatever length of time??? Also, do you know if it interacts with heart medicines or other medicines?
Your advice would be much needed and appreciated!!
    Many thanks, Elizabeth

What absurd advice! The best example of how silly this advice is? “Remove all sources of natural sugar from your diet”. Really? Got to get rid of the that “natural” sugar, do we? If this article had any input by any type of dietary professional, they would know that ALL starches are converted to sugar in the body. Get that? ANY starches of any kind. The only way to remove sugar completely from the “gut” is to eat ONLY protein (meat), fat and very limited plant carbohydrates. That’s it. Any bread, pasta, potatoes, corn, or any other starch containing food will turn to simple sugar — the EXACT kind of sugar you get from eating a spoon full of granulated sugar. No difference whatsoever. Bottom line: Let those bugs enjoy themselves in your gut. They are doing you no harm.

Obviously… I actually wouldn’t recommend “bread, pasta, potatoes, corn or any other starch containing food” to someone with parasites or gut issues and don’t eat these foods myself…

Ever heard the phrase “medicine is not an exact science”. The sooner all physicians post these encouraging words on their walls and stop guessing at what pill or treatment will work or ask why a test could show a false negative or start believing in their patients’ word as we are expected to trust and believe in theirs, the better off we all will be!!! So keep your nasty comments to itself. Good article and may even explain why I have this ‘fizzy’ sensation in my body and tiht throat to the extend where I feel like vomiting but can’t… I am taking DE since lst night and today I took it in the morning and again at 715 tonight. Not even an hour later and I feel the DE go through my body. Mt skin inside tingles and I feel light headed also. After a rough first night on it I was hoping that taking it twice during the day would make it better but it doesn’t….

I think I have a yeast or candida problem and have had one for a long time. I am currently breast feeding though so I don’t know if I should start follow any of the steps above. I actually made lactation cookies but they have brewers yeast in them… I felt great at first but after a few days I began to get a lot of gas and migraines, my bodies go to reaction to unpleasing substances. Anyway would love to know if I should wait till I’m done breast feeding to try the suggestions above.

I know this post is a few years old, but I just need some encouragement. I’m 18 weeks pregnant and pretty sure I’m dealing with some sort of intestinal worm/parasite. I know you said you shouldn’t detox while pregnant, but I’m more concerned about the negative effects the parasites are having on the baby including malnutrition. Do you think it’s safe to go ahead and begin using DE in small doses? I would love to be rid of them before baby comes so I can breastfeed. Thank you.

I have been researching the web for 4 days about parasites and removing them. Wow! Alot of discussions abt the topic out there. So much info that I’m totally confused now. I have never cleansed and need to know step by step on how to start and what to take first. Some people say cleanse the liver first, then cleanse for parasites abt amonth later. Some say to follow the H. Clark methods. Some say don’t take wormwood because its bad on the liver. Some say to do enemas ( I don’t even have a clue where to buy a enema bag or how to use one) How do you kill the parasites BEFORE attempting to expel them. The last thing I want to see is alive worms in toilet. I would pass out. No, I would throw up and then pass out.I can deal with a lot of things, but live worms coming out of my butt would put me in a padded room. So, can someone please tell me the exact steps to take. What to buy and where, the times of day and for how long. And ofcourse, how to kill them before expelling them.
I haven’t been diagnoised with parasites, but like most of you, Im get sick a lot, drs find nothing. Have bloating, skin break outs and cysts at age 43, stomach ailments etc. Please can someone answer my questions? I want to start this asap. Thank you in advance. I appreciate any help.

Hi wellness mama! Great info here. My question is can starting with diatomaceous earth cause a yeast infection??? Or could it be a symptom of die off?

This doesn’t really make sense to me, but I started a DE cleanse for parasites recently and within 4 days I started getting itchy down below. I
had also been noticing around this time that my scalp was a little
itchy. I tried to fight it with tea tree oil suppositories, coconut oil,
good diet, kombucha, apple cider vinegar, etc…but after 5 days I was
still extremely itchy and I broke down and went to the drug store to get
a 3 day treatment for yeast infection. It helped, but I still felt like
    it wasn’t 100% clear…..so I started questioning the DE.

I had on and off yeast infections for several years when I was younger,
but for the past four years I’ve been fine. It seems like the yeast came on right as I started with the DE. I’ve now stopped the DE and it’s been 3 days and I still feel slightly itchy. So I’m going to wait a week to see what happens. But I hope I can take the DE again b/c from what I’ve read it is amazing stuff. Could this have just been a crazy coincedence? It seems like it’s gotta be related.

Any help, suggestions, advice would be great! Thank you~

So my husband and I got pinworms. I treated with pin-x and then found out about DE and proceeded to treat for follow up. It definitely worked. But just as the itching from that cleared up I broke out in a yeast infection (while taking 2-3 TBSP a day, worms freaked me out ok!!) so then I cut back on DE to a tsp and got monistat 3 and used that while I was still using ACV (5% acid but more processed) and small amounts of DE as well as cranberry juice and vitamin c. Monistat cleared it up while I was taking it but the infection came right back a day or two later! Is this normal? What should I do? I don’t really want to go to the dr because I feel like they’ll just give me more monistat..

Diatomaceous Earth is amazing. Apple cider vinegar helps you with your gallbladder stones or a gall bladder attack as well as alkalizing your body if you are too acidic, it also is super for acid reflux or heartburn just put one tablespoon in water and drink it down cold or hot. Coconut oil should be extra virgin cold pressed and organic. There are 333 benefits of coconut oil a true super food! Cayenne pepper is also amazing to prevent flus and colds and to give you amazing energy. It also clears out your arteries and prevents or even stops a heart attack … a small amount of organic cayenne pepper in warm water with lemon and organic honey is super alkalizing and incredible to increase energy, clear out your arteries and organs and alkalize your body – it is the BEST solution if you have a crazy cough and can’t sleep one drink of cayenne (a pinch) + Honey 1 tablespoon + 1/2 lemon squeezed in warm water and you will sleep coughless throughout the night and it clear out yeast, bugs, parasites, and viruses. Great info in this article. BLESSINGS.

I love this. Thank you for all of your help and sharing of your knowledge. I wanted to take control of my health. The doctors have never been able to ‘fix’ my sleep maintenance disorder or my recurrent complex cyst issues. Then I realized, with fabulous help like this; my diet and exercise is not enough, I need to be in control of my health, be responsible for it. It is good to get opinions, but to follow blindly the pills and advice they have given in the past was not my best move. I was frustrated by their ‘band-aid’ approach and vague reasons as to why these things were happening. I became accepting of it. Then the side effects were too much. I lost myself in (I am normally good humored and happy), this got lost in the mix. Time to fix that! I am learning and growing in the right direction. Even if theses options are not for me ( I am going to finish my research and try what makes sense to me)-its wonderful to have options when I felt before the only options were pain or pills.
