Castor Oil for Thicker and Longer Hair

I’ve been experimenting a lot with castor oil lately as a natural beauty remedy. I already use it in my oil cleansing blend each day, and I’m enjoying the results from using castor oil packs on my skin.

Years ago, a friend mentioned that she loved castor oil for hair and eyelashes. I was really skeptical because castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency that I couldn’t imagine using in hair. I did some research and found out that I had been seriously missing out on a simple and really effective traditional beauty remedy…

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Skin

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair.

In fact, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more. If you want to try it for skincare, I recommend this handcrafted castor oil.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products (and even damage from no-poo, due to over alkalinity). The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

“Three Times the Growth!”

How to do a castor oil treatment for natural hair and eyelash growth- simple natural remedy

There are hundreds of testimonials from people who used castor oil to increase their hair growth 3-5 times the normal rate. A friend of mine was struggling with postpartum hair loss and even once her hair loss slowed, regrowing her hair was difficult.

She measured her hair growth for a month and it grew almost half an inch. The next month, after using castor oil hair treatments twice a week, her hair had grown almost 2 inches. She tested this again the following month and noticed the same result and that her hair was dramatically thicker.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are several options for castor oil hair treatments. I prefer to make my own.

To make my own, I mix castor oil with another hair-healthy oil (options listed below) and herbs to help support scalp health. Unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There is a special type of castor oil called Jamaican black castor oil that has extremely good reviews. I tried it as well and it seemed to work about the same as regular castor oil on my hair, but it seems that it might provide additional benefit for those with thick or dry hair (my hair is fine/oily).

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often

I personally use this castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though I didn’t see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use

I’ve found that this treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. I keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz my roots before applying.

How to use castor oil for thicker and longer hair naturally

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp and make cleanup easier. In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When I do shampoo, I use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Another less-messy way is to condition your hair before getting in the shower, massaging conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual.

Important Notes:

With any new oil, herb, or product, test a tiny amount on your inner arm to make sure you don’t have a reaction. While reactions are rare, some people will notice irritation from castor oil.

I’ve also used this in combination with my hair growth serum with great results. (I use the serum first to dampen hair, then apply the castor oil.)

It is also important to support the body nutritionally and hormonally with hair loss, as this can often be a sign of an internal problem.

BONUS TIP: I rub a tiny amount of castor oil on my eyelids at night to help eyelash growth as well. It is also part of my eyelash growth serum recipe.

Castor Oil Hair Serum Recipe

A mix of castor oil and jojoba will make a hair serum to help your hair grow faster, stronger, and smoother.

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a dark-colored dropper bottle.
  • Shake to mix.
  • Use the dropper to apply to the scalp. I part my hair right above the ear on one side, add a few drops of castor oil, part again about ½ inch from that part, add more castor oil, and so on until I’ve coated my whole scalp.
  • Then, I massage for 5 minutes to make sure entire scalp is coated and to help increase circulation.

Notes

This will make enough for 5+ uses depending on the length of your hair.
If you’re not a fan of using castor oil, some people have found coconut oil for hair to be a better fit.
For best hair health, I recommed using the above with Wellnesse Shampoo and Conditioner (from yours truly!), which I formulated to meet all of my criteria for safe, non-toxic, and naturally nourishing hair care.

My Own Results with Castor Oil…

Last year, when I was under extreme stress for a short period of time (finishing my book *ahem*), I noticed increased hair loss. My Hashimoto’s makes me more susceptible to hair loss when I’m under stress, and I was stressed about my hair loss (vicious cycle).

To combat this, I experimented with natural castor oil treatments both alone and mixed with other oils. I too noticed that my hair seemed stronger and that there was definitely less hair in my brush each day after a few weeks of castor oil treatments. Additionally, I started seeing tiny new hairs all around my hair line.

Random observation:

I split my head open when I was younger, requiring 8 staples in my scalp. Where the scar is, I have a patch of super-curly hair that falls in a perfect ringlet, even though the rest of my hair is wavy/straight. The castor oil seemed to help make this hair patch smoother, though it grew at a faster rate than the rest of my hair.

Now, I’ve made these castor oil hair treatments a regular part of my weekly routine and often do them at night, while wearing my blue blocker glasses and reading or watching a movie with my hubby.

Hello! I used this recipe as directed on my hair (for several hours) and then followed up with the linked hair mask recipe. After I shampooed and conditioned as normal, however I am a bit concerned. I am a male, my hair is very oily and I’m trying to grow it out. I noticed there was A LOT of hair loss, in shower, when I was washing it out. It appeared as though my hair was thinned in the front substantially as well ? has anybody experienced this before? Is this normal? Thank you in advanced for help!

Exactly how do you apply this to your scalp? Do you do it all over your hair or just in 1/4 inch sections?

        Hello Annie,

I am afraid now to start using the Castor Oil, as I am reading from more than one person that after using it, they have experienced substantial hair loss! My goodness, I thought this is to stop the hair loss, not promote it!
I have already bought my Castor Oil, Coconut Oil (already using) and Rosemary Essential Oil, but a bit concerned with the comments that expressed hair loss at time of rinsing out.
It just makes me nervous, as my hair is already thin and very damaged from color over process… Please advice!

        Thank you very much!

    hi Carole,
I actually mix my castor oil with emu and Rosemary oils. Emu is supposed to be really good for combatting the inflammation often related to hair loss/issues. As I noted earlier in the thread, I’ve experienced great success since trying this Jamaican black Castor oil. I’m sure the emu is helping, too.

Could you please share the proportion of emu oil and castor oil you are using?

Hi, I don’t have it down to a science. Maybe 2 teaspoons of castor and 1 teaspoon of emu.

I mix roughly 40% castor oil with 60% distilled or rose water and massage into skin and scalp.

As Castor Oil is a humectant, I find that by doing this, it absorbs into my skin much faster and with much more noticeable results.

Same goes with spraying this mixture into my scalp – much less messy and it seems to be far better absorbed into my scalp, resulting in a much easier shampoo time the next morning.

This Castor Oil/water mix also provides instant relief for excessively dry hands that have spent far too much time in water without the protection of gloves.

I have tried this couple of times, but my scalp burns and a lot of hair fall when I wash it in the morning. I am guessing it is an allergic reaction maybe to castor oil. O lowered the ratio of 2 to 1 coconut oil to castor oil, slightly better. I have used coconut and jojoba oil by its own on my skin before (not scalp) without any irritations.
Anyone has a suggestion on what other ratio to use?

I bought the radiant life castor oil you had linked to on post. When I got it yesterday it had a sticker that on it that concerned me it said the state of California said it causes birth defects and reproductive harm. We are ttc so now I am thinking of returning it :/.

I have been alternating castor oil and magnesium oil treatments. I can attest to rapid hair growth, but an aside is grey hair turning blondish. I haven’t colored my hair in about 2 months and the grey seems less obvious. Everyone should try it. Trying to convince my husband to give it a go for his male pattern baldness because I am sure it would be completely obvious then.

      Hi Carolina,

You have mentioned about Emu oil and magnesium oil treatments.

Could you please share the proportion of emu oil you are using with castor oil?

Also would love to know about magnesium oil treatment.

How many times a week are you following this?

      Details would be much appreciated.
I want to treat my husband baldness.

      Thanks in advance.

My hair is salt and pepper (more salt)…it has been thinning for years and just recently it won’t grow in the front middle of my scalp. I would like to try this but concerned about my hair getting that yellowish hue from using it.

Will my hair turn colors and cause the salt to darken up…I really like the gray in my hair…

Do you melt the coconut oil before you mix the oils together?

    Hi Katie,

Thanks for this easy and beautiful hair growth stimulating recipe

    I have few questions though.

    1) My husband has gone almost bald in the front. I want to start this hair treatment with him to deal with his baldness. Do you suggest me to do that?
    2) He has a habit of washing his hair everyday(just plain water), should I tell him to stop this when he has applied the oil?
    2) I have ordered Castor oil cold pressed from lotus oils NZ. Will this cold pressed thing be as effective as Jamaican Castor oil?

Looking forward for your kind response. TIA.

Hi, I am curious to know if castor oil is used for daily face cleansing and is also used for hair growth then what happens to facial hair when you use it for cleansing? Does it cause unwanted hair growth?

    1. Candace Avatar

Interesting question- I used to use it mixed with olive oil for cleansing and never noticed overall face hair growth. I would guess if you are naturally a hairy person it may?? This recipe sure is working and helping my eyebrows and eyelashes though!!

My name is Diana and I have basically cut a foot off of my hair. I had hair basically down to my belly button and now it barely goes past my shoulders. I donated it so it was for a good cause but now I’m really missing my long hair. Being 17 everyone my age has long hair and I want mine back. Anyways I have been researching this castor oil and have heard it makes your hair really greasy and super hard to get out. My hair is not like everyone’s hair. It gets extremely greasy. Even after I take a shower and shampoo it if I let it air dry it will look so greasy I can’t even leave the house so I blow dry it every day because I have to. Anyways I’m very afraid this will make my hair even greasier than it already is and I was wondering if you had any advice for me because I need my long hair back

    1. Elyse Avatar

After leaving the castor oil on overnight (or however long), don’t immediately shower. Get a handful of conditioner (silicone-free, if you can, like Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut (it’s cheap!)) and cover your oiled hair with it. Let that sit for 10 minutes and then rinse in the shower like normal. Afterward shampoo (if you shampoo– i don’t) and condition again. Voila! No greasiness!

I have light colored hair which tends to be a thinner strand than darker colored hair. And I wonder if the Castor Oil cleaned your scalps and loosened up hair that was already coming out. Honestly, I use it on one spot for the most part but maybe once a week I sort of dab it onto my whole scalp.

I do notice every time the weather changes, I tend to shed more?

Normally I use an herbal product called Folliculit. I put the lotion in my hair and it cleans out your follicles. It seemed to me the Castor Oil did the same.

I do not use home made shampoo as I can’t get passed the detox. So I might have more of a build up of product than some people. Castor oil should not make your hair fall out. Only a depilatory product could do that.

But if any DIY makes me uncomfortable (for me, DIY SHAMPOO), then it isn’t worth it. You really can’t do something wrong with applying castor oil. But maybe it just doesn’t agree with everyone. Even all natural products contain allergens. If this doesn’t make you feel good, and feels wrong, then it is wrong. Being stressed about it will make your hair fall out!!

I have Candida in my skin. When I worked super hard to clear my face, it migrated to my scalp!! So maybe this works for me bc it’s killing a pathogen in my follicles and curing a problem. Most of us women are especially particular about our hair. It’s our mane! 🙂

If it feels wrong, ditch it. There are so many other all natural beauty DIYs that save us money and are healthier for us!!

Castor oil is a great carrier oil in your oil cleanser. I use it with Rosehip and jojoba. And a few essential oils too. So- there are other uses for your bottle of Castor oil if you don’t want to use it in your hair!!

I tried Jamaican Black Castor Oil for the first time today. I am Caucasian with fairly thick and long hair but after applying it (just castor oil without anything mixed with it) to my scalp and leaving for 5 hours when I came to wash it out I had a lot more hair falling out than usual. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this and whether I should continue to use it

    1. Karla Avatar

I tried it this weekend too and have thin hair that has been thinning even more the last few years. I had a LOT of hair in the drain after washing it out (just applied to my scalp). I too was wondering if I did something wrong?

Vaseline is also another favorite product for growing beautiful eyebrows. The procedure is almost the same as castor oil, though you may have to apply this at least twice a day.

icused to takexMethotrexate too! And when it wasn’t working any longer, it looked like I was going to have to take a Biologic. I was having flare ups constantly and my doctor had me tested for Leaky Gut syndrome. I have it as well as Candidiasis. A lot of my autoimmune symptoms were actually my body attacking toxins and food particles that leaked into my blood stream. This is a whole different topic. But the Candida was really bad and in my skin as well. The Castor Oil got rid of it from my scalp, especially when I put a good amount on my bald spot. It completely cleaned out my hair follicles and allowed hair to grow. I think fr everyone taking immunosuppressants, and having autoimmune skin issues, your hair follicles and pores can easily be clogged with dead skin cells, even folliculitis. Autoimmune diseases go hand in hand with yeast infections. I’ve been off the Methatrexate for a year I’d say and treating my Candida and leaky gut. For the first time since I can remember, my skin is actually healing. And the Castor oil is working. I thing especially for those of us with autoimmune illnesses, our skin is involved and our suppressed immune system makes it very easy for our normal Candida to overgrowcajd clog our skin.

I only know what works for me and this works. I used to have thrush almost constantly and now only get it when I eat sugar. I didn’t even realize it was in my skin. But it is worth a try! Castor oil is cheap. And if it kills off a yeast overgrowth which some Drs say caused the AI disease in the first place, it’s worth a shot.
