I’ve been experimenting a lot with castor oil lately as a natural beauty remedy. I already use it in my oil cleansing blend each day, and I’m enjoying the results from using castor oil packs on my skin.

Years ago, a friend mentioned that she loved castor oil for hair and eyelashes. I was really skeptical because castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency that I couldn’t imagine using in hair. I did some research and found out that I had been seriously missing out on a simple and really effective traditional beauty remedy…

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Skin

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair.

In fact, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more. If you want to try it for skincare, I recommend this handcrafted castor oil cleansing blend.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products (and even damage from no-poo, due to over alkalinity). The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

“Three Times the Growth!”

How to do a castor oil treatment for natural hair and eyelash growth- simple natural remedyThere are hundreds of testimonials from people who used castor oil to increase their hair growth 3-5 times the normal rate. A friend of mine was struggling with postpartum hair loss and even once her hair loss slowed, regrowing her hair was difficult.

She measured her hair growth for a month and it grew almost half an inch. The next month, after using castor oil hair treatments twice a week, her hair had grown almost 2 inches. She tested this again the following month and noticed the same result and that her hair was dramatically thicker.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are several options for castor oil hair treatments. I prefer to make my own, but there are some pre-made options (this is a good one that I’ve tried in the past).

To make my own, I mix castor oil with another hair-healthy oil (options listed below) and herbs to help support scalp health. Unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There is a special type of castor oil called Jamaican black castor oil that has extremely good reviews. I tried it as well and it seemed to work about the same as regular castor oil on my hair, but it seems that it might provide additional benefit for those with thick or dry hair (my hair is fine/oily).

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often

I personally use this castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though I didn’t see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use

I’ve found that this treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. I keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz my roots before applying.

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp and make cleanup easier. In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When I do shampoo, I use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Another less-messy way is to condition your hair before getting in the shower, massaging conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual.

Important Notes:

With any new oil, herb, or product, test a tiny amount on your inner arm to make sure you don’t have a reaction. While reactions are rare, some people will notice irritation from castor oil.

I’ve also used this in combination with my hair growth serum with great results. (I use the serum first to dampen hair, then apply the castor oil.)

It is also important to support the body nutritionally and hormonally with hair loss, as this can often be a sign of an internal problem.

BONUS TIP: I rub a tiny amount of castor oil on my eyelids at night to help eyelash growth as well. It is also part of my eyelash growth serum recipe.

Castor Oil Hair Serum Recipe

A mix of castor oil and jojoba will make a hair serum to help your hair grow faster, stronger, and smoother.

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a dark-colored dropper bottle.
  • Shake to mix.
  • Use the dropper to apply to the scalp. I part my hair right above the ear on one side, add a few drops of castor oil, part again about ½ inch from that part, add more castor oil, and so on until I’ve coated my whole scalp.
  • Then, I massage for 5 minutes to make sure entire scalp is coated and to help increase circulation.

Notes

This will make enough for 5+ uses depending on the length of your hair.
If you’re not a fan of using castor oil, some people have found coconut oil for hair to be a better fit.
For best hair health, I recommed using the above with Wellnesse Shampoo and Conditioner (from yours truly!), which I formulated to meet all of my criteria for safe, non-toxic, and naturally nourishing hair care.

My Own Results with Castor Oil…

Last year, when I was under extreme stress for a short period of time (finishing my book *ahem*), I noticed increased hair loss. My Hashimoto’s makes me more susceptible to hair loss when I’m under stress, and I was stressed about my hair loss (vicious cycle).

To combat this, I experimented with natural castor oil treatments both alone and mixed with other oils. I too noticed that my hair seemed stronger and that there was definitely less hair in my brush each day after a few weeks of castor oil treatments. Additionally, I started seeing tiny new hairs all around my hair line.

Random observation:

I split my head open when I was younger, requiring 8 staples in my scalp. Where the scar is, I have a patch of super-curly hair that falls in a perfect ringlet, even though the rest of my hair is wavy/straight. The castor oil seemed to help make this hair patch smoother, though it grew at a faster rate than the rest of my hair.

Now, I’ve made these castor oil hair treatments a regular part of my weekly routine and often do them at night, while wearing my blue blocker glasses and reading or watching a movie with my hubby.

Can you add any essential oils to this mix? I was wondering if lavender and rosemary would help at all.

I wish i could try this but i struggle with oily hair so I’m afraid it will make my hair even oiler. I do use castor oil mixed with coconut oil and vitamin e oil for my eye lashes and they are growing longer and thicker.

Hi Shaan, I find that when my hair goes oily, it’s because it needs to be moisturised, so this will work a treat for your hair.

I did end up trying the treatment but it made my oily hair worse so i will only do this once a month. I have natural oily hair i have had it since I was a kid my mom also has oily hair but not as bad as mine. My hair use to be so bad i had to wash my hair everyday but i finally found an organic shampoo that doesn’t make it oily and trust me i tried alot of shampoo for oliy hair even dandruff shampoo made for oily hair nothing worked but now it’s getting better so I’m happy.

So the point is, the lotion only helps to get over the hair fall but it has nothing to do with the hair growth. For hair growth, I have found the above recipe very helpful. Thanks a bunch wellness mama! I would also suggest people experiencing hair fall to pay a visit to their dermatologist. It requires time and money I know but its good to have an expert advice because sometimes your scalp just can’t tolerate new oils, sometimes your scalp finds few oils heavy and sometimes you even end up having itchy scalp. I am a medical student but still I visited my dermatologist to check what was wrong with my hair.. i have been through the same problem and I know how pathetic it feels and i really hope you all get your solutions to the hair fall soon.. <3

Hey Mary, glad that you found it helpful. That lotion is Betamethasone lotion. I would suggest you to confirm from your dermatologist before applying it as it is the matter of hair. What my dermatologist told me was that this lotion would just help to stop hair fall and it has nothing to do with the hair growth. Also, she asked me to mix few drops of this lotion with the oil that I use. I use the same recipe for my hair mentioned above but i add few drops of this lotion into the mixture “just before” applying it on my damp (not wet) hair. Then I cover my damp hair for not more than an hour with the shower cap. Then I remove the cap and let my hair breathe for hours. I also leave it overnight. This has actually helped to boost my hair growth and I am having very less hair fall now. As I have curly hair that go frizzy too, I spread 2-3 drops of olive oil on my palms and apply it on my hair after shower. This is how I manage my hair without using any expensive hair serums. And yea I would soon stop using this lotion as my dermatologist asked me to stop using it as I get over with the hair fall problem. 🙂

That is very helpful knowledge Suneeta . What is the name of the lotion and did you find now that it is helping with hair re growth ?

Hi guys, this is to all those who are facing the hair fall issue..
In the recipe above, its written to apply castor oil on damp hair, cover it with a shower cap and leave it on for hours. Although this recipe is awesome but covering damp hair with a cap for long hours provides an excellent environment for bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms to breed in, and eventually you will notice bunch of hair falling out. And when in gets severe, you will notice hair falling with roots. Therefore, I would suggest to use it on dry hair. And if you apply it on damp hair, you can just cover it for not more than an hour and take your cap off so that your hair can breathe.. and if you still notice hair fall then you must visit your dermatologist. My dermatologist recommended a lotion that is to be mixed with the oil before you apply it on your scalp. Since then, I have saved a lot of my hair from falling out.
Hope you guys find it helpful… 🙂

I spoke to my dermatologist about why I experienced hair loss with this recipe. She said that it could easily cause a fungal infection and prescribed me an rx shampoo. My hair is now growing back…..knock on wood, but–yes–I was pulling handfuls of hair out for a while.

    1. Maria Black Avatar
      Maria Black

Hi Claire, What rx shampoo did your dermatologist prescribe? I haven’t tried castor oil on my hair, cos in the past few months, everytime I’ve oiled my hair I’ve had tremendous hairfall. When I don’t oil it, it doesn’t fall. Mine seems to be a fungal infection too, cos I tend to have some itching. With the oil, the itching is intensified though.

    2. Lily Avatar

      Hi Claire,
So that means that using natural oils promotes fungal infections?
      That’s terrifying!
Will you attempt using the Castor oil again?

  8. mary Avatar

Hi there…..I love your site as well …thank you for all your great advice! I have been using your hair loss serum spray for the last 2 months and like it a lot.It helps by adding body to my hair ,but I haven’t noticed any major new hair growth yet. How long does it typically take?
I also have tried the castor oil a few times over the summer and last night again, and can definitely confirm that I get a huge shed the day after. I wasn’t sure the first few times but I’m now convinced it is definitely the oil. I see a few others have commented on this as well but there hasn’t been a reply. I’m wondering if it’s a result of using too much? Could it be they are old hairs making way for new hairs and that after some time the shedding stops and you see new growth? Or is it just an adverse reaction and I should stop using it? It really sounds promising but I can’t afford to lose any more hair. Thx 🙂

  9. Ekta Avatar

I have very dry hair and an oily scalp. I tried using castor oil after reading your post and my hair is shedding faster and more. I mix 3 parts of castor oil with 1 part of olive oil and 1 part coconut oil. Whenever I apply the oil and try to comb, my hair falls just too much. Even during shampooing and after that, it’s falling more. I have been using it for 3 weeks. Can you please tell me if i’m doing something wrong and how should I use it.

    1. Claire Avatar

i had the same thing happen. I stopped using the castor oil, and my hair stopped falling out!

      Good luck!

This is so scary! I am reading more and more about people actually losing more hair by using Castor Oil…
I bought a couple of bottles to start treatment, but now I am terrified to use and have the reversed effect!
My hair is thin, but at least not bald… I could not afford to lose any more!

  10. Sarah Avatar

hey! This may be a dumb question, but do you only put it on the roots of your hair or do you put in on both your scalp and ends?

I have applied the therapy of hot coconut oil and lemon juice to reduce dandruff and it really works. As I have the hairfall problem also, can I mix some castor oil with the hot coconut oil ??
Will be the mixture of castor oil + hot coconut oil + lemon juice good for reducing dandruff as well as reduce hairfall ?? Or anything else I should try for reducing hairfall ??

I have felt a lot of itching in my scalp of late. From what I’ve read it could be candida in the scalp or parasites. It almost feels like something is crawling on my scalp (off and on). Once, when I tried to apply Amla oil which I purchased at an Indian store, I woke up the next morning and washed my hair and had a lot of hairfall. By the evening, my scalp was itching like crazy, almost like the oil had fed these buggers and awakened them.

I am wondering if any oil would do that, or if castor oil would help stop the itch and get rid of the folliculitis or whatever I have

I tried Zinc shampoo by John Masters it seemed to stop the strange creepy, itchy sensation.

hello, need to ask something I am not really clear about it, when you say dump hair, what do you mean?
should i water my hair and then dry half way or i need to wash then just with water and then dry with a towel only?
    thanks
    can;t wait to try it

Hi Katie, I love your recipes ( tried a few now) and your dedication to healthy living and alternative methods to personal happy wellness.
I’ve done a small patch test of Castor oil on my forearm.
I noticed within about 2 minutes I had a stinging sensation & slight rash. If I mix the above hair growth recipe & with the dilution of the other carrier oils is it safe to use this on my scalp despite my reaction to it?
Thank you so much wellness momma 🙂

    Hi Wellness Mama,

Question,do you use the refined coconut oil or th unrefined per the link to the jajoba oil? Also, do you think it’s best to just buy the premier caster oil or the kit per the link you have under caster oil?

    Thanks a million!!!

    Hi!
I might have a silly post/question. I have been using this tip on my horse, because she has no forelock at all and it makes her look so bald! I only started it a week ago so I cant comment on the result yet. I was wondering if it is necesary to wash the oil out in between treatments. I get that you dont want to walk around with a greasy head but my horse really doesnt mind! So is it more effective if you wash it out and leave the hair clean for a couple days till the next treatment or can I just apply oil once or twice a week and not wash in between?
    Thanks in advance!

Pls somebody tell me that if we would apply castor oil on damp hair, then after application are we supposed to let the hair to dry in air or cover it with a shower cap so that it remains damp till we wash it?

      hi Adeel !

i was losing my hair with the white root, and after one treatment, hair fell out, but the root stayed in.
i mixed egg yolks with castor and olive oil in the scalp and the rest of the hair. left it there for a few hours.
