I’ve been experimenting a lot with castor oil lately as a natural beauty remedy. I already use it in my oil cleansing blend each day, and I’m enjoying the results from using castor oil packs on my skin.

Years ago, a friend mentioned that she loved castor oil for hair and eyelashes. I was really skeptical because castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency that I couldn’t imagine using in hair. I did some research and found out that I had been seriously missing out on a simple and really effective traditional beauty remedy…

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Skin

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair.

In fact, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more. If you want to try it for skincare, I recommend this handcrafted castor oil cleansing blend.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products (and even damage from no-poo, due to over alkalinity). The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

“Three Times the Growth!”

How to do a castor oil treatment for natural hair and eyelash growth- simple natural remedyThere are hundreds of testimonials from people who used castor oil to increase their hair growth 3-5 times the normal rate. A friend of mine was struggling with postpartum hair loss and even once her hair loss slowed, regrowing her hair was difficult.

She measured her hair growth for a month and it grew almost half an inch. The next month, after using castor oil hair treatments twice a week, her hair had grown almost 2 inches. She tested this again the following month and noticed the same result and that her hair was dramatically thicker.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are several options for castor oil hair treatments. I prefer to make my own, but there are some pre-made options (this is a good one that I’ve tried in the past).

To make my own, I mix castor oil with another hair-healthy oil (options listed below) and herbs to help support scalp health. Unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There is a special type of castor oil called Jamaican black castor oil that has extremely good reviews. I tried it as well and it seemed to work about the same as regular castor oil on my hair, but it seems that it might provide additional benefit for those with thick or dry hair (my hair is fine/oily).

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often

I personally use this castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though I didn’t see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use

I’ve found that this treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. I keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz my roots before applying.

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp and make cleanup easier. In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When I do shampoo, I use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Another less-messy way is to condition your hair before getting in the shower, massaging conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual.

Important Notes:

With any new oil, herb, or product, test a tiny amount on your inner arm to make sure you don’t have a reaction. While reactions are rare, some people will notice irritation from castor oil.

I’ve also used this in combination with my hair growth serum with great results. (I use the serum first to dampen hair, then apply the castor oil.)

It is also important to support the body nutritionally and hormonally with hair loss, as this can often be a sign of an internal problem.

BONUS TIP: I rub a tiny amount of castor oil on my eyelids at night to help eyelash growth as well. It is also part of my eyelash growth serum recipe.

Castor Oil Hair Serum Recipe

A mix of castor oil and jojoba will make a hair serum to help your hair grow faster, stronger, and smoother.

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a dark-colored dropper bottle.
  • Shake to mix.
  • Use the dropper to apply to the scalp. I part my hair right above the ear on one side, add a few drops of castor oil, part again about ½ inch from that part, add more castor oil, and so on until I’ve coated my whole scalp.
  • Then, I massage for 5 minutes to make sure entire scalp is coated and to help increase circulation.

Notes

This will make enough for 5+ uses depending on the length of your hair.
If you’re not a fan of using castor oil, some people have found coconut oil for hair to be a better fit.
For best hair health, I recommed using the above with Wellnesse Shampoo and Conditioner (from yours truly!), which I formulated to meet all of my criteria for safe, non-toxic, and naturally nourishing hair care.

My Own Results with Castor Oil…

Last year, when I was under extreme stress for a short period of time (finishing my book *ahem*), I noticed increased hair loss. My Hashimoto’s makes me more susceptible to hair loss when I’m under stress, and I was stressed about my hair loss (vicious cycle).

To combat this, I experimented with natural castor oil treatments both alone and mixed with other oils. I too noticed that my hair seemed stronger and that there was definitely less hair in my brush each day after a few weeks of castor oil treatments. Additionally, I started seeing tiny new hairs all around my hair line.

Random observation:

I split my head open when I was younger, requiring 8 staples in my scalp. Where the scar is, I have a patch of super-curly hair that falls in a perfect ringlet, even though the rest of my hair is wavy/straight. The castor oil seemed to help make this hair patch smoother, though it grew at a faster rate than the rest of my hair.

Now, I’ve made these castor oil hair treatments a regular part of my weekly routine and often do them at night, while wearing my blue blocker glasses and reading or watching a movie with my hubby.

I’ve made this yesterday and used it to try to help my thinning hair. I am on medication similar to chemo for my arthritis and my hair seems to be falling out more and more. I also have Hashimoto’s so that doesn’t help either. So I am hopeful that this will work. I was unable to buy pure castor oil as am in the Middle East at the moment but the castor oil I found was mint flavoured! They also had chocolate flavour. I used the mint flavour along with coconut oil. I am also intending to use it on my eyebrows and eyelashes. I just have one question – does the mixture need to be refrigerated or just kept in the cupboard?

Yes i am currently using this on my husbands hair and have been for 4 weeks. He has one 2 inch section on top of his head that is balding and has been for a few years. Recently it got worse and I thought I would try this. So far he IS growing hair back! I can now see all the hair follicles coming back and blonde hair coming in about the length of arm hair at this point. I am wondering if it will stay blonde or turn dark brown which is his hair color now, although he was blonde as a child 🙂 So good results so far!! Thanks

Hello! I am 19 weeks pregnant. I was wondering if it is safe for me to use castor oil topically since what is put on skin is also absorbed. Thanks!

I use coconut and castor oil with rosemary essential oil every few nights on my scalp overnight and my hair has grown longer then it ever has!

I did some research using Pinterest and a few bloggers I really like and wrote down oils from several recipes. I don’t think I can name bloggers by name or send you to their website. The best way I do it is to look at 30 or so recipes and write down the top 7 or 8 essential oils and quantities. Then I research why these oils work. If I think it’ll make a good blend I use about what is average by other users. That way I’ve personalized it but have leaned on someone else’s expertise. I made a blend and added it to my shampoo. It didn’t make any more hair fall out. Actually, less came out on hairbrush. It started up new growth and helped my hair grow faster. I can’t say it thickened but did help save what I already had and encouraged more new growth. The recipe is a mix of 2 or three recipes: 20 drops Peppermint, 25 d. Lavender, 25 d. Rosemary, 5 Thyme, 10 d. Cedarwood, 15 d. Clary Sage, 10 d. Ylang Ylang, 2 d. Sage and 5 d. Basil. These are all good for hair and I hope this helps you. Another thing you could do is put this blend in spray bottle with detangler and spritz hair. Put a towel over pillow and sleep on it overnight. Then wash with shampoo as usual. Do this 2 or 3 nights a week. Steady use is the key to making these blends work.

it totally cleans out your hair follicles. Clears up any bacteria of fungal infection like folliculitis or Candida or antioxidants in your skin and hair. So, it depends honestly on why your having hair loss. It stimulates and sets up the follicles for hair growth.

I’m growing hair in a small thin spot I had developed. I don’t know that if someone had a thyroid problem or other health condition if it would work.

But it’s cheap and worth trying. My hair strands are thicker and shinier. It is reviving my hair. And I am growing new baby hairs.. About an inch and a half long now. So…. It is possible. And at the very least, it will make your hair healthier by deeply cleaning out the follicles and stimulating them. I hope that helps!! 🙂

      Hello Jody.
How long did it take you to see first signs of positive results of hair growth?
Also, did you apply the Castor oil mixed with another oil, or by itself?
And lastly, how long did you keep it on your hair and do you put it just in the roots, or run it through… Overnight?
I am having issues with my hair breaking and thinning rapidly, — I have been a blonde for several years and the damage comes from an over-process hair color to make it a lighter blonde :-(‘

Thank you, Karie!!! Yet another healthy home remedy to make me not only pretty but also healthy!! I too have an autoimmune disorder- psoriatic arthritis. However, my flare ups started to hit hard and way too often. I started treating for leaky gut and realized thatvI have Candida. It’s in my face and scalp as well as in my digestive tract and I’ve had no choice but to go chem free.. And like you, I was that girl spending a fortune on every and any beauty product that caught my eye.

I now oil cleanse and use an anti-aging lotion that I make. I color treat my hair and and really not satisfied with the alternatives to shampoo and conditioner but I do spray in a diluted mix of acv and dizstilled water after showering.

I use your Beach wave sea salt spray for texture.

After reading this post, I started using a small amount of castor oil with jojoba on my scalp when my hair is wet. Not only is it detoxing my hair and fighting the Candida but my hair looks fuller and feels super soft in only a few days. I too have fine light colored straight hair that doesn’t “like” oily/ heavy product. But maybe since I do the Acv rinse daily, I haven’t had a day of oily looking hair.

I developed a small, but overtly noticeable to me, bald spot in the front of my hair and already see new baby hairs coming in ay my hair line.

I’ve exclusively used your recipes and recommendations and my skin and hair look better than they have since I gave birth to my one child via c-section 9 years ago. That is when I started getting sick. I just never fully bounced back.

Your blog is making me pretty again and this latest post about the castor oil scalp treatment addresses all of my hair and scalp issues,,

I can not thank you more. I’m so grateful.

Ps:.When my hair is oiler than I’d like, I massage a small amount of bath powder into my part. Not sure how people would feel about it since it’s not an all natural chem free product. But it really odors the trick for me. 🙂

Thanks again for another fabulous remedy!!

      Hi Jodi,
I color treat my hair but have avoided any apple cider vinegar rinses as I was afraid it would strip color – – I used to use it before I began hiding the gray and LOVED acv rinse as it made my hair smooth and soft, added a little reddish highlights and made my scalp feel great…..Have you had any problems with acv rinse at all? What dilution do you use? Thanks!

    2. Linda Avatar

Yes, I’ve also used baby powder for years when my hair looks oily.

    3. Linda Avatar

I just tried the 3 tbsp Castor oil and 1 tbsp of Jojoba oil and spritz my scalp with water, massaged it into my scalp and slept with it overnight with a towel over my pillow. I have read through the entire post and have not seen this question. When I washed it out the next morning, my hair felt like sand paper. My hair is damaged from bleach and hair color but has never felt this bad. Is this normal?

I would love to know too… my kids will not drink straight bone broth.
They’re also not really into soup.
The only way that I can get them to consume bone broth, is by using it instead of water to cook white rice.

    1. Fiona Avatar

That’s a really good idea. I don’t like any soup – can’t stand the runniness – and have all this healthy bone broth in my freezer. I never thought of cooking rice in it. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi Katie,
My 4 y/o daughter has very short hair. Like maybe 3-4 inches. I have done slight trims but nothing more. I have been applying coconut oil to her hair a couple months now to encourage growth. Now I do castor oil with red Palm oil for the last two weeks. Have you ever heard of Short Anagen Syndrome? There isn’t much research on it and all I seem to find it usually works itself out by puberty! We take GP FCLO. And she has a healthy diet ei. no junk, no wheat, never hfcs. I was told by a naturopath when she was 2 that she has leaky gut because of terrible eczema. I know you’re not a doctor, but your advice is very helpful. She is also not vaccinated and has only had antibiotics onces(almost never sick) except out of nowhere she had cavities (which is how I found your website doing research a few months back).

If you have any advice I would much appreciate it. Sometimes it seems that our food supply is so lacking and damaged that unexplained ailments are now just a part of most people’s lives. Even when we try to eat healthy. A sign of the times I guess.

      1. Mia Avatar

About a year and a half ago we went to someone who uses an Ondemed machine and standard process supplements to name a few. We went because my daughters eczema had gotten bad. I was at my wits end. We stopped wheat that day. She was also taking several SP supplements but I stopped those because of cost and the difficulty of getting her to take them seem counterproductive and besides the Cod liver oil I didn’t see any results from them. But it was stopping the wheat that cleared up her skin for good. If she has wheat by accident it show up on her skin a few days later.

Now for the past month or so I have in addition to the FCLO/butter oil I have been giving her a tablespoon of gelatin a day. I noticed her face is much brighter and cheeks pinker. I listened to that leaky guy seminar you did a few months back but their program doesn’t seem practical for us. But I have been taking the L-glutamine (because I’m sure I have LG also). Maybe I can give that to her too?

Either way, I don’t know if it’s possible to already see results but her hair is looking longer already. New hairs around hairline even. Any other suggestions Katie for Leaky gut in children?

          1. Mia Avatar

I have made two crock pots of bone broth from pastured chickens this winter. I added it to soups. Any other suggestions besides soup to get a 4 year old to consume broth? (Fyi my kids 2 and 4 are sick of soup after this winter we had. And it’s the only to get my kids to eat vegetables at dinner) that’s a whole other post! Lol
Thank you so much for your advice.

I take gelatin powder for over five months now. It helps my hair and nails grow faster. I’m dyed blond and can see my dark roots growing out within a week after dying. The shedding rate it’s almost the same. I also do the inversion method once a month with olive oil. I’m thinking to switch to castor oil or a combination of the two to see how it goes.

Hi Katie, thx for the recipe. Im making it at this precise moment and I have question regarding the coconut oil. If the oil gets hard, ( I’m using a container with a pump) is it ok to warm it up a little bit. Also I have the same hair type as you, oily/fine, theres no way I can go 1 day without washing it, even tough I just started using the Marocco Method brand, still wash it everyday, should I do this hair growth recipe 2 a week?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge Dear!
