The Benefits of Lemon Water

Benefits of drinknig lemon water in the morning

I’ve occasionally had a glass of warm lemon water in the mornings for years, but usually just because it sounded good and I wanted something warm besides coffee or herbal tea.

5 Health Benefits of Lemon Water in the Morning

In the last few weeks, I’ve seen several pictures and posts floating around the internet touting the benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning, so I decided to investigate this habit I’d already intuitively had for years.

Turns out there are real benefits to drinking lemon water, but some over-hyped ones as well.

1. Helps Digestion

The biggest lemon water benefit may be from the temperature of the water and not even the added lemon. Drinking any water, or especially warm water, first thing in the morning can help flush the digestive system and rehydrate the body.

Think about this… During sleep, you typically haven’t been drinking for at least 8 hours. Giving the body adequate water when you first wake up is a great way to get your body and your mind going.

A college friend of mine who had studied in Japan brought back that habit with her. She said that where she stayed in Japan, it was customary to drink 2-3 glasses of water first thing in the morning and that when she tried it she had noticeably more energy and improved digestion throughout the day.

2. A Natural Flush

The liver is extremely active during sleep since sleep is the body’s time to restore and regenerate. Drinking enough water, especially in the morning, helps make sure that the body can perform these jobs most effectively. There is even some evidence that lemon juice can help stimulate proper stomach acid production and bile production.

Benefits to your body: A happy liver and lymph system.

3. A Little Immune System Boost

Lemons contain Vitamin C… not a spectacularly high amount, but 30-50 mg per lemon. They also contain potassium.

Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning gives the body a chance to absorb these vitamins effectively and can provide a little immune boost.

Vitamin C is also good for the adrenals and can potentially help reduce the affects of stress.

4. Happier Skin

By helping flush the body and improve digestion, lemon water can lead to cleaner skin. It also contains Vitamin C which is needed for collagen production for smooth, healthy skin.

5. Healthy Weight

There is evidence that drinking water, especially lemon water, first thing in the morning can help maintain a healthy weight. Researchers in Germany found that drinking enough water increased metabolism

After drinking approximately 17 ounces of water, the subjects’ metabolic rates — or the rate at which calories are burned — increased by 30% for both men and women. The increases occurred within 10 minutes of water consumption and reached a maximum after about 30 to 40 minutes.(source)

Of course, drinking water (or lemon water) by itself isn’t going to be a miracle weight loss solution, but with other healthy habits, it can help maintain a healthy weight.

Things Lemon Water Won’t Do

Drinking enough water and adding a little Vitamin C boost are good ideas, but they aren’t magic and there is no scientific backing to some of the claims made online about the benefits of lemon water:

  • Balances pH Levels: There is a theory that certain foods can leave an acid or alkaline ash in the body. This is true, but this only affects the pH of the urine and not the pH of the blood. Chris Kresser explains the Acid/Alkaline myth in depth here.
  • Flushes Toxins: Drinking water is important to help the body naturally eliminate cellular waste (a process that it does naturally), but claims that lemon water has a special ability to flush “toxins” without defining what they are or how this process works are overblown.
  • Prevents Cancer: Many of the same articles that claim that lemon water alkalizes the body claim that because of this, it promotes an alkaline environment where cancer cells cannot thrive. See the article from Chris Kresser above about why this theory doesn’t make sense.
  • Increases IQ: While drinking water or lemon water in the morning can help with alertness and focus, there is no evidence that it actually increase IQ over the long term.

The Bottom Line of Lemon Water

It is always important to support our bodies by drinking enough water, especially in the morning. Lemon water won’t be a miracle cure but it might be a better alternative to caffeinated drinks, especially for those with adrenal problems.

I’ve found that starting to drink water first thing in the morning when you aren’t used to it can cause a few minutes of nausea, so it might be a good idea to start slowly and not used to drinking this much.

How I Drink Lemon Water

I always make sure to drink a few glasses of water in the morning, but a few days a week, I add some fresh lemon juice for the taste and Vitamin C. Here’s what I do:

  1. I’ve wanted to drink the lemon water in the morning but didn’t know how to prepare it, so I thank you for telling us about this

          • Of course it will work, why not silly Ruth?
I use the bottled lemon juice – ~16lemons in 1 bottle, saves space in my fridge 😉
and makes preparation sooo much quicker!

          • This is a quote from joyous health on why lemon juiced months ago and bottled is NOT recommended.

“The number one step I teach people in this workshop is to “Drink freshly squeezed lemon and water in the morning, on an empty stomach”. And the number one question someone ALWAYS asks me is “Can I just buy the lemon juice in the plastic bottle”? My answer is always NO. And let me tell you why….

Two words: Sulfur Dioxide (also known as sulfites)

This chemical is common in our food supply and used as a preservative to prevent the discolouration of fruit (you’ve all seen the bright orange apricots), as an anti-microbial for wine (you’ve likely seen the phrase “contains sulfites”), in frozen pizza dough and pie crust, and in the case of lemon juice, to prevent it from rotting.

I personally avoid buying wine when it states “contains sulfites”. Pretty much all wine contains sulfites to a degree, but I avoid wine brands that have added sulfites. Now before I continue, I don’t want you to think that sulfites are the most evil food additive on planet earth, because that’s not the case. However, I do want you to think about eating more “real food” and that means food that doesn’t contain chemical additives to maintain freshness.

This is the number one food rule: Buy food that can actually rot! This is a really good indication of a REAL food.

Here’s some info for you on sulfur dioxide:

It is used to decolourize paper and cloth, as a bleaching agent and to treat chlorinated wastewater prior to release.
Sulfur dioxide blocks nerve signals from the pulmonary stretch receptor, which is precisely why it mimics asthma-like symptoms. To make matters worse, it also inhibits your lungs from over-inflating, which is why you feel like you can’t take full deep breaths when exposed to sulfites.
Sulfur dioxide emissions are a precursor to acid rain which kills fish and stimulates the overgrowth of algae.
It is the poisonous gas emitted by volcanic eruptions.
Coal and petroleum burn off often contain sulfur compounds.
These types of sulfur compounds are harmful to the environment, plant and animal life.
Now keep in mind I’m not a chemist, but it wouldn’t be too far off to assume the vitamin C and other minerals in the lemon juice are not as potent as they otherwise would be. Furthermore, the LAST thing you want to do is chug back lemon juice that’s been sitting on a store shelf in a plastic bottle potentially leaching phthlates (plastisicers) and BPA (bisphenol-A) in to the juice.

What kind of nutrition are you getting from a fruit that’s likely been squeezed 6 months or even 2 years ago and packaged for sale and then potentially sit in your fridge for another 6 months to a year.

Just buy a bag of lemons and squeeze the juice every morning. If you don’t like lemons, then 1 capful of apple cider vinegar does the trick too! The beautifying, detoxifying benefits of endless”

          • Everything I’ve read recommends fresh – organic (if you can find them) lemons. The bottled stuff loses it’s nutrients.

      • Yes, I use Santa Cruz Organic Lemon Juice, about 1 tablespoon in a glass of room temperature water. I also add about 1/4 teaspoon of Himalayan Crystal Salt. It has really made me feel better. Really!

      • I doubt it. Most bottled water with lemon flavor is artificial flavoring and most of the benefits of lemon water are due to the hot water being helpful with digestion (aka good for colon elimination).

        • The question was about bottled lemon juice, not bottled/flavored water. And there is just no reason why hot water is better for digestion…your body warms everything to your core temperature anyway. Whether it’s freezing cold or drinkably hot, it’s all going to be the same temp within a few minutes of swallowing it anyway.

      • Yes, it’s the same thing. You don’t have to look at the How to make lemon water. It’s simple just put lemon in water. Or I guess you can squeeze the lemon if you want.

        • Amazing how this pretty old post draws my attention TODAY, 24 Feb.2014!
And we are still discussing the pros and cons of using natural products?
          A-ma-zing!
Whenever I look at people holding their plastic water bottles I have 2 thoughts:
          1. is this bottle PBA free? (of course, it never is)
          2. is the water in this bottle worth what you paid for it?

How stupid are we to make a marketing trick rule us and make us damage the environment so much?
Have you, bottled water drinkers, heard how much damage we are doing to the oceans?
How many bottles are YOU discarding in a month? Tell us!

          • I recycle my water bottles. I don’t worry about the PBA hype-just one more thing for people to be neurotic about. I use 1 bottle a week, refill it for each workout and when I’m on the run. I drink a lot of water every day. There are much bigger issues killing our environment I’m afraid. Relax and have a glass of water. (if that makes you happy)

          • I installed a cheap water filter system on my kitchen tap. It has lasted 8 years and still going strong. I keep a couple of bottles topped up in the fridge so always ready for use. I don’t worry about the BPA hype, there are some things you have to let go. But I do empty my water bottle over my pot plants as I open the front door.

          • I buy the gallon water jugs – less expensive , and less to the environment , of course I recycle . Just saying .

        • I put lemon juice in my water bottle and drink it everyday or when I’m thirsty ,your say that’s not good now,it’s bottle lemon

      • I haven’t noticed anyone replying giving you the best answer to your question- you should use real lemon because it simply tastes better. Make a lemonade with real and with bottled and I bet you like the real one better!

      • I was told to only use organic lemons and no bottled lemon juice. I seem to frequent the bathroom more, anyone else notice this? Skin definitely better as well as digestion.

        • I was told it didn’t really matter about organic lemons but I still try to buy them when they’re on offer. If I get organic I also zest them before I juice them. Keep the zest in the freezer for use in recipes one of which is adding it to oatmeal. It makes for such a yummy taste. I digress!! It’s a natural diuretic which causes the bathroom breaks.

    • Since two weeks i hv been having a tonic drink of a lemon, grapes, n garlic all blended toghether. I get the fibres, vitamins n its nice. I hv been able to quit smoking habit of 10years at the mere thought that while on one hand i am detoxifying my body why should i inhale smoke. Anyways i feel full of energy, with a special glow on my face as noticed by my peers. It makes me councious at every minute of the day of what should i eat n what not

  2. I whole heartedly agree about the water. I happen to like the taste of lemon so I add that too. If I’m out of real lemons I add 2 drops of lemon essential oil. Would the oil have the same effect as the juice?

  3. Funny, I’ve also been drinking warm lemon water in the morning for years for the same reasons you mentioned. Not every morning, but many. I just love the feel of a warm cup in my hand, but only like to drink coffee occasionally and tea is my evening beverage. I add lemon because plain warm water is just too dull. Nice to know there are some other benefits to my morning ritual. 🙂

  4. I tried this and ended up with severe nausea and vomitting. I’m thinking it was too much daily for my system. I drink warm ginger tea instead with a slice of lemon in it. I don’t get nausea with this.

  5. What about diatomaceous earth, don’t you drink it first thing in the morning? Now I am confused what to take. Which one you take first?

  6. I have been trying o make my own vitamin c’s, I saw online how to make the peel lime, lemon, orange and other citrus together and dry them, now do they boost energy strong or what do you recommend? are they the same as vitamin c oil? I also watch your blog and wanting to know how to make probiotic lemonaide. Can I use honey and any kind of sugar or just sucanet?

  7. I just wanted to point out that people may want to use a straw to drink it, the acid in the lemon is hard on tooth enamel.

    • Whether or not it erodes your enamel is dependent on your diet. After re enameling my own teeth in a matter of weeks. I don’t care. I drink grapefruit juice – still acidic all day and have healthier stronger enamel than ever. Guys don’t be worry warts. If u care that much take some raw fermented cod liver oil/butter oil and eat only long-fermented grains and startches and organic grass fed A2 milk. Otherwise your enamel is eroding faster from your bread/crackers, milk, tomatoes, unsoaked beans Than lemon-lemon helps get rid of bad bacteria in your mouth from the bad food too.

  8. I have tried to like lemon in my water for so long now, but I do actually like Lemon essential oil! It has the same benefits, but for whatever reason I can tolerate the taste of it verses an actual lemon.

  9. I started drinking lemon water over the last 3-4 months and can tell a huge difference in the way I feel. Some of the things listed that is not proven may still be valid because the truth of the matter is they haven’t researched it enough. When people can tell a difference in their body I would judge what it does by that and not the limited research. I also believe that most of Gods given foods have a hand in helping the fight in your immune system as he intended it to be. Thanks for the info I just believe we need much more as to what natural remedies can do. Scientist for the most part are not given the resources to study as they should.

      • You really think pharma would waste cash into researching things that might kill their business? LOL , there’s never going to be any real research, it’s against the pharmaseutical industry’s interest. Can you please remember that the USA would’t exist if the sailors didn’t eat 1 lemon a day to survive the seas back when pharma didn’t exist? Why is it that when I take 1 lemon when I feel a cold coming it , that cold fades off?

Point being Lemons and limes are a god send (I’m an atheist) , they are here to help us heal without PHARMA’s toxic cancerigenic evil-lab fabricated engineered crap.

Sorry but your statement: `the things we do know for sure are enough reason for me` – that must be one of the most naive things I’ve ever heard. You will never know, because it’s stacked billions VS our health and pharma investors would never allow pharma to show that 1 stupid fruit can destroy their empire.

Note to everyone: You can alternate between lemon and lime everyday, for example, 1 half of a lemon in the morning, 3 hours later, half a LIME. 3 hours later half a lemon, 3 hours later half a LIME. Remember to use a straw and never squish lemons or limes into hot water, as you instantly destroy vitamin C, so squish those into cold water – AWALAYS USE A STRAW to avoid destroying tooth enamel!

  10. I think it’s helpful to sip the morning beverage as too much liquid ingested at once, especially first thing in the morning, can be nauseating. I love the idea of lemon water as it intuitively sounds cleansing. However I don’t feel good after drinking it early in the morning, so I just stick with plain water.

  11. I have been adding my collagen hydrolysate to this in the morning…does this alter it in any way? Have tons of lemons from my three trees!

  12. Thanks so much for this post. I’ve been drinking a cup of lemon water each morning but never thought of adding ginger which I love.

  13. YOU ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT. FLOATING LEMON SLICES JUST CONFUSE YOUR MIND INTO DRINKING A GLASS OF WATER. SQUEEZE THE WHOLE LEMON FOR THE JUICE IN THE GLASS OF WATER AND DRINK. THEN EAT THE LEMON SKIN WHICH IS 10 999 times more than chemotherapy. IT KILLS ALL THE INFLAMMATION IN YOUR BODY. I HAD 4 HAEMOTOMA BRAIN BRAIN SURGERIES IN AS MANY WEEKS AFTER I WAS ON THE VERGE OF DYING WITHIN MINUTES. FOR A LONG TIME I SUFFERED AFTER EFFECT WITH HEADACHES. THE FIRST TIME I ATE THE LEMON SKIN WITHIN FOUR SECONDS MY HEAD WAS CLEAR AND I CONTINUE EVERY WITH THE PEAL. MY BROTHER – LAW TRIED EATING THE PEAL AND IMMEDIATELY FELT SOMETHING TERRIBLE IN HIS BODY HE STOPPED EATING IT ALTOGETHER. I TOLD HIM THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG IN YOUR BODY. SOON AFTER HE WENT FOR A SCAN FOR HIS PROSTRATE GLAND AND THEY DISCOVER THAT HIS ONE KIDNEY HAD BEEN EATEN BY CANCER WHICH IS NOW IN HIS LUNG AND HE IS SO BD HE ONLY HAS A FEW MONTHS TO LIVE

    • Can I ask how you eat the lemon peal?? Do you just chew it. I have medical reasons for asking this question. My spinal disk’s are herniated and the inflammation in my back tissue is very inflamed and I’ve been in so much pain for years but refusing spinal operation and horrible medication. Im trying so many alternative therapies but nothing is working.

    • The fresh lemon oil is very potent but be wary of non-organic. Fresh from the tree is much more potent than from the store too.

  14. I had been doing lemon water or just straight water in the am and noticed my eyeballs were whiter and digestion was better. But I stopped when I was prescribed to take naturethroid and hormone supplement on an empty stomach, and the supplement said preferably early in the am. I didn’t want to drink so much water that the meds were flushed out of my system too quickly. Is that bad science or am I kinda on the right track? I just end up drinking the water during the day. Thanks for the help!

  15. I have enjoyed warm lemon water first thing in the morning for many years, but in 2013 read your article about Sole, so started drinking that instead. More recently I decided to combine them; so have warm water with a tsp of sole and a squeezed wedge of lemon in it. I find it to be a nice combination.

  16. Daphne, keep up your spirits and thank you for your story. I’ll be thinking good thoughts for you and your brother. I’m glad the lemon water is helpful for you. I’ve noticed it really gets me going in the morning–I just need to remember to rinse that acid to protect my tooth enamel!

  17. Hello There,
    How are you?
I just want to ask if I can drink whole milk or have my cereal w/milk after I drink my lemon water? Or should I wait a few minutes to half a hour or more??
Would it cause a bad reaction when lemon juice and milk are combined? Can I get sick??
I’m sorry I’m just concerned about the reaction of lemon with whole milk and other types of milk such as….. almond/coconut milk.
Hoping you can help me pretty please 🙂 🙂
Thank you for your time, it means very much.

  18. My husband has two issues. One is phlegm and the other is snoring. We finally figured the less phlegm equals less snoring. OMG it works. He takes a cup of warm water with 1/2 lemon and I now don’t need ear plugs at night.
He also has had kidney stones. Men over the age of 50 seem to get kidney stones easier. We are trying to make his diet more alkaline so lemons are a good choice.
My mother would put salt on the used lemons to clean the copper bottom pans we had as kids.
Sooo those of you with lemon trees in Texas, who let them fall off your trees, should try some of the benefits of lemons.

  19. My daughter who is now 26 suffered with 20 nails dystrophy as a young girl. She suffered through a series of painful shots, and was put on silica, the nails seemed fine until recently. there are two nails that have reverted to the same condition.Id appreciate it if you would give some ideas on what natural remedies might help.
I read that may be some kind of eczema, or psoriosis.
    I’d appreciate any information.
    Thank you
    Marjorie

    • Try diatomacious earth FOOD GRADE only. Important to be sure its food grade because the other kind will harm you. There is much silica in DE

  20. I have started doing this and I feel I can already tell results. Thanks for sharing. You have such great content, I love your blog! I love how you include the printable recipes!

  21. I am a diabetic for 20 yrs now due to Polycystic Kidney disease. My sugars have been elevating lately. What can you recommend as a supplement for sugar with no after taste n cancerous sustains?

    • My husband was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma…the only cure for this is a Bone Marrow Transplant which would be risky..I started giving him 2 tablespoons of Maple syrup with real lemon juice and water every day, some researchers say the combination is an excellant way to alkaline the body so that cancer cells cannot grow. My husband enjoys it so much he uses it as a sugar substitutes in his tea..

  22. So glad people are getting the word out on the benefits of lemon water. Thanks for taking the time to put together this resource and the ongoing discussion.

  23. Very interesting, Katie. I have always happened to enjoy lemon water, but was unaware of its powerful benefits. I guess no wonder, considering the benefits of water on its own 😉

  24. The recipe calls for 24+ ounces of water. Do you drink all of it at once? I made some this morning, and it just seems like a lot. Thanks!

  25. I’d like to add that lemon water can help prevent kidney stones. I just had this very painful experience. After that, my Doc suggested citrus for prevention. There is lots of research out there about it’s benefits in “lemonade” drinks … So there’s another proven benefit 🙂

  26. A bit late, but I wanted to say it’s nice to read an article, not written by a medical site, that has a balanced view. Thanks for putting in the effort to look at both sides – I know I take the risk when typing in ‘benefits of lemon water’ into Google, that I’ll get miracle cure articles 🙂

  27. Hello!
I was doing the warm water with lemon and cayenne for a couple of weeks and it was great! But then my whole family freaked out saying it can be too acidic in your stomach and can cause something to happen in the long run…can it be true?
For some who are worried about their teeth, use a straw!

    Thanks

    • I add cayenne every once in a while. I’m guessing if you do this every day it may have an adverse affect. I also add cinnamon in place of the cayenne pepper.

  28. Hi.. i really like your blog.. but sadlly.. it is really hard to find fresh lemon here in the phillippines.. and the fresh mint as well.. is there any substitute for the mint leaf? I really want to try it. But istead of warm water.. can i use cold water instead?

  29. If I don’t have lemons I use the huge circle pineapples 100% juice and not the syrup kind. I cut them in halves and dunk them in the glass to soak in a few minutes to drink and eat.

  30. I have drunken lemon water for more than one year I must say it has many afvantages it reduvrs weight, Improve sdigedting and immune system

  31. I drunk lemon water daily for the past 6 months.. I noticed it helps with my water retention and reduce my sinus symptoms.

But for the past months I have had symptoms like hormonal imbalance [irregular period for the last two months], skin breakouts and trapped wind in the body [abdomen & headache like]..

    Should try stop?

    Thanks 🙂

  32. Just wondering if lemon water is ok to do while nursing my baby. I’ve read that any sort of cleansing while BF pits toxins in the milk?

  33. I prefer cold lemon.water.is it okay?pls confirm.just squeze the lemon with one glass of wateron one piece of lemon can be the same result?

  34. Hello. Do you use the ginger to help the taste or for other health benefits? I haven’t seen so much on lemon water as honey lemon water. What are your thoughts on honey vs. ginger?

  35. As regards the *Increase IQ* claim, of course, drinking water (lemon or otherwise) can’t increase your IQ, however, it can prevent temporary *loss* of mental ability. Studies regarding pseudo-senility and Alzheimer’s has revealed that many elderly people reduce water consumption after midday in order to prevent having to get up in the night to urinate, or even more dreaded, wetting the bed at night. These patients then exhibited loss of faculty in the late afternoons and evenings, with symptoms which appear similar to senility. These same patients, once they had re-hydrated the next morning, appeared perfectly normal.

This syndrome was even highlighted in an episode of Doc Martin, where he deems his elderly patient is fully cognizant and in control, but the same afternoon, this character decides to wander out into the ocean fully-dressed to complete her daily shopping (obviously, not normal behavior) and cannot remember people she knows well.

The science, as I understand it, is that your brain synapses require moisture to function properly and withholding large amounts of liquid can create senility-like episodes. There is also evidence that low-fat diets can create a similar deficiency of material the brain requires to function properly.

A word of caution: One has to be careful about the source of water, fats, and other nutrients. Contaminants in water can be just as damaging and certain types of fats (hydrogenated, for example) are obviously not good for you. But keeping hydrated and eating the right types of fat can assist you in keeping your wits about you!

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A DOCTOR and I don’t play one on TV either! Everything I write is my opinion alone. Don’t just take my word for anything — do you own research and make informed decisions about what you believe so you do the right things for you and your family members!

    Cheers

  36. Katie, would doing this with cold water work just as well? I personally enjoy iced water with lemon. Is there a specific reason for using warm water?

  37. Usually I squeeze a lemon fresh into my water. I noticed your instructions called for dehydrating the lemon or putting it in the freezer before squeezing it into the water. I want to make sure I am getting all the nutritional benefits. Is there a difference in methods? Do you add pieces of lemon to the water? Thank You!

  38. Naturally I drink water early morning
Buti didn’t used lemon yet . I have a question, I want to loose my weight /fat more and more , does this lemon juice work for . If yes , Tell me how many times I have to drink lemon water in 24hrs and its tips to prepare.

  39. My question is I suffer from acid reflux…I always limit my acid intake. Does anyone know if this makes that sort of thing worse? I am going to start anyway but just curious….thank you.

  40. Thank you so far, you’ve done a great job. I have been taking the normal only water therapy for some time now, and it’s has been of great help to you health generally, but learning about this lemon water therapy sounds great. Pls is it advisable to use the two water therapies together same time or one at a time? Another one, am a slim person an i don’t really want to reduce weight than i appear, will lemon water make me loose weight? Am so proud of your post, thanks. Pls reply

  41. Many years ago, during training as a nursing assistant, our RN instructor advised us to drink hot lemon water every morning, as part of our personal hygiene program. The benefit, she explained was bowel regularity and an increased ability to perform our duties without unnecessary interruptions. At the time, I thought her advise was inappropriate, but now realize that she was ahead of her time. I love my diet sodas, (gasp!), but I am really enjoying iced lemon water more and more. I don’t think that the temperature of the water matters much, as our bodies quickly either warm or cool it. Sometimes, when out of fresh lemons, I have to use the reconstituted juice, which is acceptable.
We all need water in order for our bodies to function, and by itself will not make you gain or lose weight. The ratio of calories taken in and calories burned is still what determines weight. Water can make a person feel more sated and they may loose weight from eating less. Water consumption will not cause you to loose weight if you continue normal food consumption.
Lemon water is pretty dilute, and acid re-flux exacerbation is unlikely as most are likely to be in an upright position during the day. You might wish to check with your gasteroenterologist before beginning to drink lemon water, especially if you have been told to limit acid intake.

  42. Hot Lemon Water is wonderful; however, be sure to maintain oral hygiene. The acid from the lemon can damage the enamel on you teeth; therefore, I suggest using an enamel restore mouthwash and enamel health toothpaste.

When I drink Lemon Water, I am revived and totally focused.

  43. Would the lemon water make GERD worse with the acidity? I have a bit of acid every now and then but will try the water soon anyway. Thanks for the article! 🙂

  44. Hi Katie, I’ve noticed a few people have asked if essential oils are just as beneficial (the purest/organic oils of course!) I’m really curious if this is true also. I hope so – it’s a much quicker/easier alternative! Also a lot have asked about cold vs warm water. My Acupuncturist says that in Chinese medicine it is recommended that you drink warm water because cold water is harder on your digestive system.

  45. How about LEMON JUICE? And how much Lemon should be used in a single cup of water? Also, is there any Science behind the preference for WARM water, as opposed to COLD?

  46. This is a bit embarrassing, but it’s something I credit drinking lemon water each morning to… I had an allergy to my husband’s “baby juice” and it left me with a burning sensation even moments after doing the deed… (we saved ourselves til marriage so there was no way of knowing this before hand in case anyone tries to debate that…)

We were trying for a baby, but had to stop because it was causing me too much pain. I did some research online and read that the reaction could be caused by having a high acidic level in my lady parts. I began drinking lemon water each morning and within six months I was able to enjoy the deed with no pain or discomfort. Sadly, it didn’t bring on pregnancy… there are other issues there, but at least I can now enjoy the man I married.

Like I said, I’m only going off experience here, but for me, this worked in that way and maybe it can help someone else.

  47. I drink hot lemon water every day – first thing in the AM – with a teaspoon of raw honey. Delicious and healthy. I also grate some of the peel to shave some of the lemon skin into the drink for extra vitamin C.
I think I may start adding Ginger.
30 minutes later I eat a normal breakfast, coffee etc but something about starting the day with that lemon elixir makes me feel better and healthier all day. Maybe mental I don’t know but it’s working highly recommended!

  48. I have use hot water lemon drink. I was told by a naturopathic dr. That it would open up my bile duct. That was the reason for such an acidic stomach. Drink the lemon water morning and evening. As hot as water as you can drink with half a fresh lemon squeezed I to it. I found that it truly worked.

  49. In early morning i do water therapy and after 45min i take food now i think i should drink lemon drink when should i drink. In between or before or after. Plz do let me. Thanks

  50. I’ve been doing the lemon water (I like to call it tea) every morning. I use the juice from one whole lemon in 8 oz. of water with nothing else but I’m interested in trying the ginger. I spend about 20 minutes drinking my tea and then I have a 16 oz. bottle of water and I make sure to rinse my teeth like you said. I take one probiotic pill when I first get up but here’s where I might be backing up-I do have one cup of coffee. I love my coffee and am not willing to let it go yet. Thanks for the information though, I have read how much of a detox it is but maybe not so much. I will continue to do so. ps-I zest my lemons when I am able to get organic ones, store doesn’t always have them.
    Thanks again!
    Mikki

  51. After suffering from extreme eczema (unable to use my hands for weeks at a time)for most of my life, I found drinking lemon water daily is the only thing that keeps it away. This is why I believe lemon water is a gentle liver cleanser. If I skip for three days, it returns. Praise God for His wonderful healing creation, I have enjoyed four years eczema free.

  52. Ive already drink for 2 month from november 2015
3 finger sized ginger cut layered > into 1 litre cc hot water
after that add 3- 4fresh limes cut and squezzee.
Add 2-3 spoon honey 1 hour before taking breakfast. 500cc drink warm ( sometimes i dont have breakfast because already full water and calorie from honey)
And other 500 cc for regular drink and mineral water also about 1-1.5 litre

At night make again but without honey 500cc before going bed.

My food 60% vegetable and fruit, 20 %meat (no pork), 20 % oat or carbo

I lost my weight about 12 pon. My body feel fresh, stomach never get pain, everyday defecation, dust alergic rhinitis much decrease, joint and muscle in neck feeling much better. And better mood.
I dont drink coffee and smoke.

  53. Too many comments blowing the subject way off track with personal unsubstantiated claims/advice/recommendations.

    • In my opinion it can’t hurt to drink lemon tea (what I like to call it). I have an 8 oz cup of that then 16 oz. bottle of water before I drink my coffee. I’ve read elsewhere that drinking water before anything else in the morning is good for your body as well. Bottom line you have to do what makes you feel good – right? My morning routing works for me. It sure beats 5 cups of coffee and several cigarettes which used to be my morning routine. 😉

  54. Hi Katie,

This is great simple recipe. I myself usually juice or squeeze about a full lemon (in either water or juice, I like adding lemon to fresh apple juice actually) but have never tried adding ginger root to it. Good idea, extra zesty and zingy with ginger which is also really healthy for you too.

  55. I take thyroid medication every morning. Therefore,
I can’t drink the hot lemon water tea in the morning.
Is evening or before bed, OK. However, that’s how I’m
drinking it. There seems to be no side effects.

  56. if you zest or grate the outside of the lemon can you just put those shavings in the lemon water for added benefits?

  57. I juice my lemons and spoon it into an ice tray to store in the freezer. So every morning I boil a pot of water and throw in 2 lemon ice cubes into my mug and pour hot water over it. This method saves me time and no mess to clean up in the morning.

    • I love this idea of prepping the lemons! I squeeze lemons every morning and there have been some mornings I’ve skipped because I don’t have the time. I love the idea of ice cubes! I always use distilled water (once you get used to it all other waters don’t taste as pure). I’ll prepare two trays tonight! Thank you so much for this idea! PS: My mother didn’t believe me when I told her about not liking the taste of other waters until she saw me always pick out the non-distilled waters she offered me. She started drinking it and told me she tasted no difference … until 6 months later after continuous use. Then she told me she could taste the difference as well.

One more thing … I always add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (with the mother) in my lemon drink along with cayenne for a good liver detox. I have the healthiest colon now. Never constipated, never a day without a BM. I was diagnosed with a fatty liver 2 years ago (thankfully its reversible), and I cannot wait to have another ultrasound to see if I finally reversed it!

  58. I just started this routine of the lemon in water. It’s been about a week now. I am experiencing headaches. I am thinking that it is probably detoxing me. Has anyone else had this experience??

  59. I did not have that happen but after I drink my lemon in water I have a 16 oz. bottle of water which I drink down. Both of these go before my morning coffee. Maybe you’re delaying morning coffee too long?

  60. That is indeed a thought. I usually try to have about 32 oz of warm water after the lemon water. I’m feeling kind of water-logged – lol…

  61. I just slice a pice of lemon, and ginger. Put into a cup with some cold water. Then I slowly pour in the boiled water. I add a teaspoon of honey and let it sit for 5-10min. Then I drink.

  62. I drank just 1/2 lemon in 16 ounces of water and only drank half of it. Was fine for a few hours, then I started getting bad stomach cramps and feeling dizzy, and like my head feeling heavy or something. I got up the next day and felt a little better but not much. Drank a little ginger ale and it seems I am feeling somewhat better. I was also going to the bathroom a lot.I took in the morning on empty stomach.I was wondering what might have caused this and will it go away without having to go to doctor.I also take thyroid medicine in am but did lemon water first then waited 2 hours to take it.It felt like my throat was full or something, weird feeling.I just want some feedback about if there is anything special to eat or drink.I quit it for now to see how I feel.

    • I definitely would stop taking anything that you think is making you ill. I’d also definitely talk to a doc and prioritize your thyroid medication first, and wait 30 minutes or so before trying lemon water.

  63. I have started having lemon water in the morning and experiencing tremendous change in myself. I have become more energetic than i was in the past.

  64. I just started,( been drinking coffee, all my life), )is been hard, some nausea, and headache, I use straws t avoid damage d teeths

    • I still drink coffee but start my day with the lemon water then I drink 16 oz. bottle of water-if you swish the water around in your mouth don’t worry about the straw you get the lemon off your teeth. I have read that hydrating your body first thing in the morning is good for you which is why I began to follow my lemon tea as I call it with the water.

  65. The best reason to use real lemons is that it simply tastes better. If you don’t believe me, take a blind taste test in lemonade with real and bottled. There’s a reason lemonade stands at public events are selling the heck out of real lemonade- it tastes great!
I drink lemon water every day at room temp- I buy bags of lemons and keep several in a pretty bowl on my counter and squeeze a half in my water in the morning, put the other half cut side down on a little dish and use it later in the day or the next day, doesn’t hurt it to not put it in the fridge.

I didn’t see the benefit I use lemon water for listed- although you can’t alter the pH of your body or blood, you can alkalinize your urine pH. I am prone to kidney stones, which are often caused by excess acid for most sufferers. The lemon alkalinizes the ph and helps keep them from forming. Sounds wrong since lemon is acidic, but it’s true- google it. They are high in potassium citrate and bind with stone forming citrates in the urine. Here is a link, if it works, to a government site talking about it.

And after drinking it every day for months, now plain water feels just plain boring! lol
Putting ginger in and drinking warm sounds like a good thing for the winter- thanks!

  66. I use hot water, squeeze of real lemon juice & a tbls of raw organic coconut oil, blend it up & drink – lovely.

  67. I also suffer from chronic back pain and inflammation and have had fusion surgery. When I first started drinking lemon water to help prevent the cold that was going around work, I started with ‘Real Lemon’ brand juice . After about a week, I noticed that I wasn’t taking pain meds every single day, so I kept with it. Since I work two jobs, I don’t have a lot of prep time daily. I squeeze two lemons and then drop them into a half gallon pitcher, add water and refrigerate. I have enough for one mug every morning for a week. I also experimented with taking it to meetings that usually make my back flare up and drank it throughout the meeting. It worked as long as I was drinking the water and I recovered from the meeting more quickly. That’s just my personal story. Oh, someone asked about GERD. I have that, too, and it didn’t get any worse.

    • Hello
I have been drinking warm lemon water (fresh lemons) every morning for about two years. I add about 1/2 teaspoon of minced ginger. My acid reflux symptoms, which included almost constant nausea, have all but disappeared. This is after trying almost every acid reflux medication available. For me, it is an amazing result!
During the day, I sip lemon infused water. It tastes great and is good for you……makes water less boring.

  68. Lemon contains citric. Acid which is known tri-chelating agent, more specifically it has stronger bonding with metals then with sodium and potassium making it an excellent metal detoxification agent.

  69. Hello Wellness Mama,
Thank you for all you do!
I have three things I am trying to drink every morning. Hot lemon water, Apple cider vinegar w/water and DE in water. I’v started combining the three into one glass for my morning cocktail. Is this still as effective?

  70. Hi Wellness Mama!

Lovely article. I have found that it has been so helpful in kicking my sugar addiction to the curb. Thank you for the inspiration and information!

  71. My urologist recommended lemon-water combo for kidney stones, but also advised giving up coffee and tea. I have followed that advice for two years now, and have not had any recurrence of stones. Recently, I have added Matcha to my daily regimen—a teaspoon in my morning smoothie—after oil pulling and lemon-water. For those of you using turmeric, adding black pepper to it facilitates the bioavailability of curcumin—the piperine in black pepper is the key ingredient.

  72. Even reading this advice gives me stomach ache… Drinking something as sour as lemon, with spicy ginger on empty stomach is quite harmful, don’t you think so?? Especially with supplement pills, before food… Good you have a strong stomache but many people should be causious following this advice! They can develop sensitivity and pains, even ulcer by harming their gastric epitelium routinely…

    • Lemon is an alkaline and it neutralizes acid. That’s why when you have heartburn as weird as it sounds lemon is one remedy. I don’t think it would harm your stomach but I am not a doctor and recommend if you wanted to start doing this it might be a good idea to check with your doc first. Good luck, I have lemon tea and then a bottle of water every morning before anything else.

  73. I slice 2 to 3 lemons into a pitcher of water each night and then drink it through out the next day. It is helping to curb my appetite, I’m not snacking nor do I feel hungry!!! This is my first week of doing this and I a down 6ils!!!!

  74. I have noticed drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning helps decrease my appetite. I have experienced much needed weight loss. I can’t say it was definitely attributable to drinking lemon water as I have also begun a healthier diet with more fruits and veggies and less red meat but I definitely notice it helps me feel fuller before ai even have my breakfast fruit and veggie smoothie. I tried the recipe with ginger root, cayenne pepper and honey but I experienced the same benefit with just lemon and it tastes better.
