I love using herbs and spices to support the body in healing itself. Maca root is a favorite because it’s so supportive of the body’s production of hormones. Since hormones rule a lot of the body’s processes, maca is a great natural supplement for female hormone support.
Maca: A Root for Almost Anything
Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) is a tuber or root about the size or shape of a radish that grows exclusively in the Andes mountains of Peru. These roots are commonly white and yellow, though they can come in pink and purple colors as well as gray and black.
While maca is about the size and shape of a radish, it has a nutty, almost sweet taste. Some explain it as being a bit like butterscotch! Some people add it to sweet treats because of this (though some people still don’t like the slightly earthy taste).

Health Benefits of Maca Root
Maca has gained a reputation for helping balance hormones and even reversing hypothyroidism. It is an endocrine adaptogen, meaning that it does not contain any hormones, but rather it contains the nutrients necessary to support normal hormone production.
Maca for Adrenal Support
Maca is often recommended to those with adrenal fatigue as it nourishes them and supports calm reduces stress hormones. Because maca is an adaptogen it can help support the adrenals when they become taxed (as happens during stress).
Research published in 2006 shows that maca contains alkaloids that act on the ovaries and the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis (HPA axis). By affecting the HPA access maca can support adrenal health as well as many other hormone-dependent functions of the body.
It’s thought that maca does this by nourishing and activating the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. As the “master glands” of the body, when these function better they can bring the adrenal, thyroid, pancreas, ovarian, and testicular glands into balance.
Maca for Libido
One of the ancient uses of maca root was as an aphrodisiac for libido and sexual health. Science backs up this ancient use as well. A small 2006 study found that men experiencing mild erectile dysfunction saw improvement with using maca. For this reason, it’s earned the nickname “nature’s Viagra.”
According to a 2010 Korean review, taking maca for at least six weeks increased sexual desire in participants in two of the 4 studies included. More research is needed to definitively tell whether maca works for this use based on the results of this review. While not definitive, this evidence suggests there may be a connection between maca and sexual desire.
Australian researchers found that maca given to postmenopausal women with sexual dysfunction helped with menopausal symptoms (like hot flashes) and increase sexual function but did not have any effect on sex hormone production. This study suggests that the support maca offers is not necessarily in affecting hormone production but in some other function of supporting hormone health.
Maca for Fertility
I have personally seen many cases of couples adding maca to their daily regimen and conceiving easily, even after struggling with infertility. (Note: It should not be consumed during pregnancy!)
But science also supports this function. A 2016 review found that maca increased the quality of sperm (and sperm count) in infertile as well as healthy men, indicating that maca may have a significant effect on fertility.
Women are also thought to benefit from maca. According to a Polish study, maca toned the hormonal processes along the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovarian axis, “balanced hormone levels” and “relieved symptoms of menopausal discomfort.”
Maca is also high in minerals (calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc) and essential fatty acids which can help support hormone production.

Maca for Mood
As anyone who has experienced puberty, pregnancy, or menopause knows, hormones can have a huge effect on mood. Since maca is thought to help with hormone health, it makes sense that it could help with mood as well.
A 2015 pilot study discovered that maca can support healthy blood pressure as well as a healthy mood. In this study, postmenopausal women were given maca for six weeks. Maca “appeared to reduce symptoms of depression and improve diastolic blood pressure” in these women. However, there was no measurable effect on hormones, suggesting that (like an earlier study) maca may affect hormone health in an unexpected way.

Safety and Side Effects of Maca
Maca root is considered safe for most people. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding it is not recommended. Because of this, it’s best to take maca between menses and ovulation to avoid possibly taking it while pregnant.
If you have hormone specific health concerns, like breast cancer, endometriosis, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, or uterine fibroids, check with your doctor to discuss whether this supplement is safe for you. As always, check with your doctor that using maca is a good idea for your situation.
How to Take Maca (and Where to Get It)

I currently take meds for my thyroid and my hormones as I have a hypo thyroid and have had a hysterectomy, would this help for me to get off these meds and has anyone grown this at home?
i am a thyroid cancer survivor. i’ve used this in conjunction w/ my (name-brand) thyroid replacement medication. the only way to know is to: a) discuss with your physician. b) get blood tested (TSH etc) before taking – then again in 12+ weeks and see if it helps. i would like to say that for me, this hasnt helped me with respect to taking my meds/dosage etc., i feel it assists me in feeling well, and i’ve noticed my hair and skin aren’t as dry this winter. i use the tincture, and lately only when i remember! – a few x per week

Called the company for advice, their medical team said to stop the product as I am on thyroid medicine to suppress CANCER growth and I should never take maca!

I would check out the maca team, it explains the different maca’s available and different forms between powder, gelanized, etc. Powder is the easiest, but some people have gassy problems with it, so you can take it gelanized, or if you don’t mind taking pills you can get it in pill form. I went with powder, as I already take supplements and vitamins I didn’t want another pill, and you can just toss the powder in a smoothie.

I love Maca! I’ve been using it for a couple of months now to balance my hormones and I read somewhere that it shouldn’t be taken raw because it has ill-effects for some and it’s a very strong herb so it’s better to ease into it. The traditional way to consume it is by cooking it in breads,etc. I personally toast it in my toaster oven and sprinkle it in my tea/mix it together.

My boyfriend has been adding raw Maca to his shake every morning for some time now and it was only recently that we were told that raw Maca is supposed to be cooked before consumption, the lady was selling a brand called Royal Maca by Whole World Botanicals which was created by a doctor who works with farmers in Peru, ensuring fair trade and eco-friendly harvesting…. since a lot of the big companies are over harvesting. Raw maca flour (harina de maca) is an inexpensive Peruvian cooking flour, not a designer supplement. Maca is a fiber-rich vegetable, being nearly 25% fiber (oligosaccahrides, cellulose, lignins) by weight. My guess is this person has a stomach bug. First, the friend got it and then that person got it. Rotavirus can last a long time, I had it for 12 days once. Most stomach illness is from inhaling vomit particles or eating traces of feces from an infected person. Nobody likes to think about that so they blame food instead.

I think it’s important to warn people who do NOT have thyroid issues that this could be bad for them. I took Maca Root, hoping it would help with low libido, and it made my joints ache BADLY. That only happens to me when I eat too much PUFAs! I have had better luck balancing my hormones after getting a blood test (confirming low progesterone) and supplementing Vitex aka. chasteberry extract.
I too have low progesterone and would like to hear more about Vitex aka chasteberry extract.
I don’t know of any online resources that discuss it. My (holistic) doctor recommended it to me.
I feel like it’s worth noting that arthritis runs in the family so I may be more inclined to inflammation. I don’t know why Maca caused that for me, though.
From what i have read it sounds like maca has a high starch content which is probably why it affects your arthritis. I have quite a few friends who are affected by autoimmune arthritis or autoimmune skin complaints that are linked to starch in their diet. Watch out for veges/fruit that wouldn’t normally contain starches that have been cold store ripened cause they often still have starch.
Gelatinized Maca has the starch removed. Some Maca has been heated, some is raw. From what I read, heated is the most efficient. I do not know if the gelatinized version has been heated.
Have you heard about gelatinized maca. Gelatinization is an extrusion process that removes starch from maca thus concentrating the active ingredients.

I am so glad you mentioned the gelantized form of Maca. I have been taking it one spoon a day which is 5 gram daily in water with honey. Because I don’t really like the taste of it alone being it very bland. I haven’t really experienced any difference so far so that’s why I am researching HOW MUCH can you take on a daily basis but there is absolutely no information available on the dosage.
I am not pregnant or looking to be more fertile. Just want more energy and get rid of fatigue because I am going through perimenopause.

I would encourage you to seek out a local herbalist who might be able to tell you more about vitex.
I take vitex daily in my water. It has helped tremendously with regulating me, helping with PMS and also ovulating regularly. I have it on subscribe from Amazon so I always have it available. Accupuncture, Vitex and Raspberry Leaf Tea has helped me in regulating my periods/ovulating etc. due to PCOS without the use of prescription drugs. I just started on Red Maca which is the one recommended for women, and I too am having a hard time with the taste, the first day I used it just in water and it tasted to me like tobacco, so I had to hold my nose to drink it, today I mixed it with some fruits in a smoothie but I could still taste it, its a strong taste, I am going to have to play around with different combos until I find the right one to mask the flavor.
I too had trouble with the taste of the powder.. Read about extracting it and that is so much easier to take. Half jar of maca root powder, add vodka to fill jar and stir, shake a couple of times a day for three weeks.

What brand of vitex you are using and raspberry leaf tea? I also have pcos.
I have low progesterone and tried Vitex – it took my symptoms and made them 10 times as bad! It’s supposed to ‘balance’ progesterone and estrogens, but all it did for me was to imbalance me even more.
What helped every symptom go away finally is progesterone cream (by Emerita). I tried a couple of brands but this one worked best for me.
Eventually you should have a saliva test for your hormones – whereas my blood test showed that my hormones were all ok, the saliva test confirmed all my symptoms and that my progesterone was low.
In the end, medicine knows so little about hormones that’s why we all have to experiment with that stuff – sad but true.
Almost all the so called plant phytoestrogens are something I personally stay away from. I won’t even buy vitamins made specifically for women when enhanced with the phytoestrogen plants/herbs. I have no problem with eating the whole food broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts etc but no longer go for the green drinks with just compounds from them. Eat the foods the way they were made and originally designed by our Creator.

I have pcos and doctors told me i wouldn’t have a baby without fertility and hormone treatments. I started using progesterone cream to regulate my cycles. Before i knew it i was pregnant. Then i went on to have 2more children. I suffered a miscarriage b4 i used the cream. Research directly links low progesterone to miscarriages. Ur body does not make the progesterone in the 1st trimester after that the placenta starts to produce. True progesterone only comes in a cream not a pill.

Why shouldn’t maca be consumed during pregnancy? I keep finding very contradictory information on the internet and blogs (scientists saying NO and lots of women swearing that’s the reason they carried full term, etc).

From what I’ve gathered it is a food that people eat every day in the andes, including pregnant women. So you can indeed eat it- but not in high or concentrated doses.
The only reason they say not to take it while breastfeeding or pregnant is because there are not enough clinical trials to say it is safe. In Peru, where most maca is grown, everyone eats maca on a daily basis. (Up to half a pound daily!) Babies, toddlers, children, and pregnant women all eat maca in Peru. Also, not all maca is the same. There are different phenotypes, 13 in all. Some phenotypes that benefit men, some younger women, some menapausual women, etc. For example, there are three different types of maca that are detrimental to men’s prostate health. 2 other types don’t even do anything for men. Therefore only 8 others should be taken by men. As for pregnant or breastfeeding women, there just isn’t enough information from clinical studies to say for certain it is safe.
So if you are taking maca, then get pregnant, when is the right time or what is the right procedure to stop? Is it ok to just quit once you find out your pregnant?
I would do what is comfortable for you. From what I understand maca is nutritive, and an adaptogenic, something safe to take regularly that nourishes the body.

I am wondering the same thing. I have taken a couple of doses and they have a big effect. But I am wondering if I could over-do it.
I am going through the menopause and have auto-immune thyroid issues. Hot flushes, depression etc have been a problem but I have reduced daily / nightly multiple flushes down to a mild one maybe only once a day (prev 4 -5) and none overnight since taking maca root tablets 3 weeks ago.
I am positive they are beneficial, cause of the reduction in flushes and my skin seems much better all round also.

I came across your comment off of Wellness Mama from last year. My sister has Hoshimoto’s also and she has been able to balance her hormones by going to a doctor that specializes in the BHRT. She only has to tk a compound for her Thyroid and of course be strictly gluten free. R u on anything for your thyroid? That is what is affect with Hosh. R u going to someone or doing your hormones over the counter? Let me know and I can help u out a little. My sister has been dealing w/ it for 4 yrs. She has to get her Thyroid tested every 4 to 6 months to see if it needs adjusting because it can change do to stress, exposer to chemicals or change in activity and diet. It’s undetectable in peanut butter
Maca is great on salads as it has a bit of a sunflower seed taste. Its also great when added to homemade granola bars. If you can stand it, when I’m in a hurry, I put my morning dose in a cup and put just enough water in to make it drinkable then drink it down. Its fast and doesn’t mess up the taste of my coffee. 🙂
I have adrenal fatigue and before I got pregnant was taking macs for about 4 months. There was an increase in libido, I seemed to be able to sleep better, handle stress better and my skin went from pale to rosy. Its definitely a great supplement, but be careful if you don’t want more kids. hehe.

I put Maca in hot cacao drinks I make, so it ends up tasting kind of like a nutty hot chocolate (and peanut butter and chocolate are my favorite dessert combinations-yum!). When you put it in the hot cacao, it’s not as noticeable because I’ve given it to my boyfriend with and without the Maca in it and he can’t tell the difference. 😉 (Also, for those above who weren’t sure what it tasted like…it tastes kind of nutty)
I mix my Maca in hot water with a tablespoon of coco powder, a dash of cinnamon and a bit of honey for sweetness. I think it helps disguise the taste and makes for a sweet treat in your day. I love Maca. I have been taking it for a few months now and can see a difference in my mood and energy.

I got on to this website because I noticed that one of the ingredients of an adrenal support Cream given to me was Royal Maca.

I love Maca powder. I can tell a huge difference in the last few weeks since I began taking it. I have more energy, feel better, and my PMS is not a big deal anymore. I add it to milk and mix thoroughly, kind of tastes like a shake. Sometimes, I add cocoa, nutmeg, ginger, and turmeric powder. It is not as tasty that way but that drink provides a big punch of great nutrients.

I’ve been taking maca for a couple weeks before PMS, and I’ve noticed less severity in my PMS symptoms. I think it’s helping my energy level too. I give it two thumbs up!
What is the dosage?
1 tbl daily is a good dose. There are a few different types of maca root. Red, black and cream. Each one has a little different benefit. Black is good for men, red for men and women and cream is great for women. I mix all three and take it.
It is technically untested while nursing, but I have used it without a problem.
Have you used it during your pregnancies? I am pregnant and have very horrible morning sickness (lasting all day pretty much). In the research I’ve done most people say it can’t be consumed during pregnancy but I found one lady who does and says she’s doing well with it… well, if maca can’t be consumed during pregnancy, do you know of something else I can take that can help me???

Hi, I’ve been taking a teaspoon of Maca a day while nursing and have noticed no difference in my supply or baby for that matter. I also take Ashwagandha while nursing and have no negative side effects.
Hello, I have a question. Why is maca not good to take during pregnancy if it is just a super food? Or if the Peruvian women have been taking it for infertility and/or as part of their regular diet before, during, and after pregnancy? I would like to know because I have some raw red maca powder that I have been taking to help with infertility and based on everything I couls find, I was under rhe impression that maca suppliers tell women not to take it during pregnancy to cover themselves from possible lawsuits, and not because of found evidence that maca was harmful to the mom or the baby. Because there is so much conflicting info on line, I would really like to know why it is not to be taken during pregnancy. Thank you in advance for your response.
There is a lot of conflicting info and I’ve not been able to find anything that shows it is definitively safe. I asked a friend who is a doctor (and who even makes a Maca product) and she doesn’t recommend it during pregnancy, so I avoid it. That said, definitely check with your own doctor or midwife and make your own decision.

I believe Wellness Mama mentioned in a post on fertility that you can use topical progesterone cream during pregnancy, at least for the first trimester.
I’ve read on a few different websites not to use while pregnant or lactating, but I don’t know why. Maybe do a little extra research
The only reason they say not to take it while breastfeeding or pregnant is because there are not enough clinical trials to say it is safe. In Peru, where most maca is grown, everyone eats maca on a daily basis. (Up to half a pound daily!) Babies, toddlers, children, and pregnant women all eat maca in Peru. Also, not all maca is the same. There are different phenotypes, 13 in all. Some phenotypes that benefit men, some younger women, some menapausual women, etc. For example, there are three different types of maca that are detrimental to men’s prostate health. 2 other types don’t even do anything for men. Therefore only 8 others should be taken by men. As for pregnant or breastfeeding women, there just is not enough information to know. More and more clinical studies are being done as maca is very powerful.
YIKES! I have been giving my husband some maca powder. How do I find out what kind I have and all that stuff? I am giving it to him for better health, not to decline in the prostate area!!! Please help!
There are different colors of maca. Yellow, black, etc.. Each one has a different benefit. Usually, the maca, regardless of the color, gets blended together. The only maca that I or my boyfriend take is from a company called Natural Health International-Femmenessence or Revolution. Otherwise, we don’t know which kind we are taking. They separate and measure the maca and put it into capsules. They have different boxes of them for each gender and phase of life you are in. I take mine like that or I will open the capsule up and put the powder in yogurt. I’ve seen them sold in Sprouts, Whole Foods, and some vitamin shops. Hope this helps!(:
Because I’m from Peru, I wan’t to let something clear. Not everyone in Peru eats maca. It’s getting popular in the last years. But is not as extensive as you are making it sound.
I am from Peru also. You are right. My experience is that they only eat sweets on special occasions, drink lots of teas and fermented or pickled meats (escabeche) fermented fruits or grains, some are Chicha, etc.
Does maca increase libido? If yes, after hw long?
Yes it would. It’s usually a homornal issue. I googles “health benefits of Maca Root from Puru”.
I added maca one morning to my smoothie. That evening I was unusually attracted to my husband (I have had very low libido for a long time, major stress, low thyroid, etc). It took me several times to realize it was from the maca. I was taking it just to balance hormones, not necessarily to increase libido. So yeah, it worked pretty fast for me.
I haven’t used Maca yet but I purchased the Nutribullet last week and they recommend using it in their smoothies. I had no idea it boosted fertility though which is always good to know. Thanks for this post!
It sure does! It balances out your hormones overall. But there are 13 different phenotypes of maca. I take a maca that is in capsules by a company called Natural Health International. (Look them up) They have the different types of maca singled out and they put it in their products based on your sex and what stage of life you are in. All measured out too!

I don’t work for that company but I am in the health industry. I do take maca and I learned about all the maca companies at an expo. I have also done a lot of research. My boyfriend and I have been on maca from 3 other companies before we learned that they didn’t have any studies like NHI does. I feel the difference between the different maca and it’s good to know results of clinical studies. I feel it’s important to share with others especially since I was giving it to my boyfriend without realizing it could have a negative effect on him if given the wrong colors.

Sorry, but the company you mentioned markets well but is a lot of crock.
They have several different labels for their Maca product for women and 1 for men.
Reality check, all the same ingredient except 1 formula has 750 mg of Maca concentrate.
The rest have less, or 500 mg. Same formula. All are concentrate, not extract which I would recommend personally. Its more potent.
The benefits of Maca cannot be measured with a heading or title that this company cleverly does to sell product for individual need.
Bottom line is everyone is different and results will vary and dosage is not written in stone.
Average is 1000 mg a day
Do yourself a favor and buy where it is cheap with no frills.
Avg price about 12 bucks for 100 caps. Not the 35 and up inflated price of this company.

I have been trying Maca on and off for about 3-4 weeks, for irregular periods and for balancing hormones after birth control. It is causing mid-cycle spotting (requiring a panty liner) how long before my hormones are regulated? I am taking two capsules a day at the same time

Having worked with maca for 15 years and having done extensive clinical trials what I can tell you is that the answer depends on why you want to take maca and what type of maca you use.
As far as Femmenessence is concerned if you have postpartum issues that require hormone balance then you can work with your healthcare professional and use Femmenessence MacaHarmony – this will balance your hormones however if you are breast feeding we have seen that lactation can start to decline. It wont stop but it will reduce because Femmenessence is balancing your hormones for your health. If you stop Femmenessence your lactation will return.
If you trust Dr Oz the answer is no.
Dr Oz is correct! Take nothing that may alter your hormone levels which naturally change during pregnancy.

I am wondering if Maca can be taken during menopause to balance out the hormones and not have any adverse effects. Because from some of the comments I am reading here, it’s mentioned that since hormones fluctuate during pregnancy, you should just leave it alone.
Has anyone who has gone through menopause or going through it right now has taken and has had positive effects. Please help because I am struggling everyday. It’s just plain awful. Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful for me at this point because I have almost given up.

I used Maca to get through menopause as I prefer natural products. It helped me tremendously with my moods, especially irritability, and night sweats. I took it for menopause as it was recommended to me by a Naturopath. I took 2 capsules morning and evening.

Maca was recommended to me by a friend as I was struggling with menopause. I absolutely love it. I no longer have need to seek doctors help, Maca rebalanced me and the best part is that my libido has greatly improved. I couldn’t live without it. Don’t take too late in the day as it can increase energy which I love! in the morning.

It seems from the replies it does help with menopause. I’d like to know exactly how it works on a cellular level, but I cannot find that information anywhere. When I was using it (loose powder form) regularly in smoothies I had zero premenstrual symptoms. I lost my bag during a move and keep forgetting to purchase more– back to bloating, fatigue, weird dreams, irritability, insatiable appetite and breast tenderness prior to followed by bad cramping during my period.

I feel it works well for me as I eat really clean. (No processed foods and eat what we grow) and exercise

Hi I used maca for thyroid problem based in information on the internet saying it is good for thyroid probems. So I would just let people know some of the side effects I had with maca. First of all maca causes insomnia and can make you stay up for days without sleep or you cant go to sleep or you wake up at 4 or 5 in the morning. Also maca messes with you’r nervous system and brain chemistry causing increased heightened anxiety migraines emotional problems aggression which leads to mental health problems. You can become very ill very ill quickly from taking this very powerful herb which you need a prescription to use in other countries. Also it worsens the thyroid problem once you come off the maca your tpo anitibodies dramatically increase which start to attack the thyroid making the problem worse even causing goitre though your on levo. Maca worsens thyroid problems don’t take it if you have a thyroid problem you could find yourself becoming very ill very ill quickly. Also the side effects of maca can last for months they don’t just stop once you stop taking the herb.
I added maca powder into my smoothie and had insomnia, abdominal cramping, and a terrible headache. I realized that it is the maca powder because I believe when I had these symptoms before, I used maca then as well. I hope I don’t have any long term side effects.
