So, in case the title didn’t give it away, today’s post is on an interesting topic, but hear me out before judging!

I get a lot of questions from people who try my homemade deodorant and have issues with rashes or odor or excessive sweat. I’ve found that magnesium spray deodorant can be a good alternative, but wanted to find a way to help those who were still having trouble.

After much experimentation, research, and help from a few brave friends, I found an unusual solution that works really well!

Detoxifying Armpits: Yes, It’s a Thing

It occurred to me as I sat researching the sebaceous glands one night with a bentonite clay face mask on that perhaps my face mask was the answer to the armpit question as well.

After all, I’d used bentonite clay to detox my hair before (and use it in my shampoo now) and in natural detox baths and it worked incredibly well… perhaps it would speed up the adjustment period to natural deodorant as well.

Why detox your armpits at all? Why not just keep using regular deodorant and avoid the whole problem? Glad you asked…

Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain a variety of chemicals and additives. It takes something unnatural to block the body’s natural ability to sweat, and the chemical list in some deodorants is impressive:

  • Aluminum– Some evidence links aluminum to cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Phthalates– Endocrine disruptors often also found in plastic that can cause hormone imbalance and even infertility (especially in men)
  • Propylene glycol– Common name: antifreeze. It is a hotly debated additive in personal care products but the Environmental Working Group reports that it carries a moderate risk of immunotoxicity and allergies
  • Formaldehyde-  A known carcinogen… guess it kills the germs though
  • Parabens- Another hormone disruptor and parabens have been found in biopsied tissue with breast cancer
  • Antibacterial Substances- I talked about these before but they are endocrine disruptors and can negatively affect the immune system

Why is this a big deal? Ever gotten sick and had a lump in your neck or armpit? That is a lymph node and they are a major part of your immune system. Putting endocrine disruption chemicals directly on top of them is a great way to screw up your hormones and suppress immune function.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and what touches our skin can easily enter our bloodstream. With skyrocketing rates of breast cancer, it would seem prudent to avoid these chemicals until further research is done.

A great advantage to doing an armpit detox, besides that it helps speed up the natural deodorant adjustment period, is that it might help pull some of these chemicals out of the skin and tissue of the armpits. This can be especially helpful after years of conventional deodorant use.How to detox your armpits- and why you should

Does Armpit Detoxification Work?

I tried it personally and had several friends who hadn’t yet made the switch to natural deodorant try it as well and then switch. Here are the results:

  • We all noticed less odor, even without wearing any deodorant afterward
  • Nobody who tried the detox noticed a rash when using the natural deodorant
  • All but one person said they noticed less sweat
  • Everyone said they would recommend it to a friend

Completely un-scientific trial but practically applicable and the results seem promising!

Instructions

  • Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bowl (do not use metal!) with a wooden or non-metal spoon until about the consistency of sour cream.
  • Spread in an even layer over the armpits and allow to sit for 5-20 minutes. I suggest starting slowly and working up to a longer period of time once you see how your body adjust. If it hurts at all, remove immediately.
  • This may cause some redness as it will increase blood flow to the area, but it will go away quickly.
  • Wash off in the shower or with a warm, wet washcloth.
  • Repeat daily or as needed until underarm odor goes away and natural deodorant is non-irritating.

Notes

I’ve found that I don’t even need the baking soda in my natural deodorant after doing this.

Additional Armpit Tricks to Try

If you are still struggling with odor or have itching or lumps in your armpits, consider dry brushing, which is said to help improve lymph circulation.

Also, make sure to drink a lot of water any time you stimulate lymph flow (dry brushing, massage, detox, etc) to help flush the body and avoid getting dehydrated.

Transitioning to Natural Deodorant

After detoxifying, keep armpits functioning properly by letting them sweat! I know this isn’t the most socially acceptable (or the most pleasant at times), but I find that I experience less sweat the longer I use a natural approach.

DIY Armpit Care

If you have some coconut oil, shea butter, and a few essential oils on hand, you can probably make your own natural deodorant! It costs a lot less than natural deodorant in the store and works just as well. I’ve been experimenting with recipes for years and perfected a few different kinds:

I make up several jars (or bars) at a time since they keep for up to a year or more. That way I always have some on hand. These are great too for teens who are just starting out on the journey!

Where to Buy Deodorant

I’ve also found my favorite brands to buy over the years (because life gets busy!). Here are our favorites:

  • Wellnesse Mineral Deodorant – Part of my personal care line, we created our natural deodorant off of my tried and true DIY recipe. We formulated it with those in mind who are sensitive to baking soda and it has rave reviews from both men and women.
  • Crunchy Betty’s Kokomo Cream – This deodorant has been a great standby for years. It smells lightly tropical and reminds me of vacation and the beach!
  • Schmidt’s (any scent, but this one is great) – goes on smooth, and slightly more affordable than other natural options

That’s it! Enjoy your new stink-free armpits!

I actually talk about this and everyone thought I was crazy! If I had seen this before I would have shared it and then everyone would be on board since ” Wellness Mama” said it! I make a Detox Mask and Natural Deodorant. Also I find using a natural body powder helps with support when transitioning to natural deodorant- for that extra drying support and with Bentonite Clays to help along the detox! Great article!

Tried the detox tonight…my armpits are very soft and smooth. They are odor free..a little dry feeling but I put some Aloe Vera spray on my pits and they feel great!

Once made do you use it all or can you save some for the next day? It made way too much for one use!

You can sometimes save in an airtight container in the fridge (small container so it doesn’t have any air to dry out) and I usually add a little more liquid to keep it from drying out if I’m trying to store it. I wouldn’t store more than a day though.

I got extremely sick from salmonella one year and in that same year within a few months I had a “plugged duct” so large in my arm that they had to remove it. I have never thought about the correlation until this moment. I have switch over to using natural deodorant awhile back but they are so hard to find instores where I live it’s crazy. I have never even thought about doing a cleanse first! So much great advise thank you so much. I am already planning to teach my daughter to stick on the natural path in this area when she gets there!

I’ve been having pain in my armpits, I think it is lymph swelling from detoxing. Would this help? Thanks so much!

    Hi there!
Clay is a great choice with apple cider vinegar. ACV helps restore the body’s acidity and pull out toxins as well.

I was having trouble with detox odors and my doctor told me that using REAL lemons and either squeezing onto a cotton pad (organic of course) or just rubbing the lemon on the armpit after a bath helps. It also works in your private areas if you are having detox odors there.
I’m ok with my underarms now. I just can’t use natural deodorant. I’ve tried it ALL AND NOTHING WORKS! I’m very frustrated. So, I’m still using secret because I don’t itch or smell weird when I sweat. ? I’m still kickin and beating my illnesses! Everything else is natural. I’m a medical freak of nature, trust me. Lol

Question, because I am curious and have never thought of using a natural deodorant. I work in manual labor and if I do not use deodorant I can smell pretty rank on a day with a heavy work load. Would a natural deodorant keep that smell at bay?

I’d like to switch from conventional deodorant to natural deodorant. While I’m doing the armpit detox should I continue to use my conventional deodorant or should I start using the natural kind? How many times should I do the detox?

I’m sort of sensitive to trying things, I tend to turn red, or get a rash, mostly because I’m allergic to a lot of things. I tried a detox once, and my energy level went so low, I could barely walk, therefore, rather than detox again, I went to my natural food store and asked for the best natural deodorant. I have tried a lot of them, wasted a lot of money throwing them away, except for one, since all the others made me stink more. The one that I liked, they sold the company such that they changed the formula to the point that people have complained it no longer works. I’ve had rather smelly underarms all my life since I tend to exercise a lot.. But have found two things have made the odor go away, Zinc supplements and the deodorant that’s a best seller at the natural food store: Brand name is Aubrey, E Plus High C Deodorant. I believe it’s a popular brand, as I have bought their body wash, but it was too harsh for me even though it’s made of fruits and organic herbs. It’s about $6-7.00, not too bad in price for something that works.

I tried almost all forms of natural deodorant but it gave me rashes except the spray except for the Crystal deodorant spray which I use now daily…

Where can i buy a natural deodorant? I would like to get that first before i try the detox. I already go the weekends without using deodorant, which is okay as I am usually home all weekend or wash my arm pits before going out on quick trips. Also I am looking for a good soap for bathing and a recipe for natural toothpaste. I use coconut oil now on those areas that can get a little yeasty because of sweat, and would like to introduce more natural grooming products. Thanks to the guy who cut my hair, and being off work for 5 months i have gone from having to wash my hair every 2 days, due to oil, to only having to wash it once every 5 days. I know this is a lot but I really want to clean up my act when it comes to what I put on my body…. thanks

I noticed quite a bit of sweating (mainly stress sweat) after making the switch to a “natural” deodorant. This detox is like a miracle worker for the sweat! Did one yesterday (just the second time) and no sweat since then!

I have the day off and will definitely try this today. I got Primal Pit Paste and used it twice this week. On day one I was sweating profusely and smelled terrible. I haven’t noticed smelling bad unless doing physically intense activity, not really when I’m just doing a normal day of work. Day Two of the PPP was less smelly, still sweaty. I took Day Three off and just put some lavender essential oil on my pits. I didn’t want my co-workers to think the stink was going to become a permanent thing. Now it’s Day Four and I’ll try the clay detox. I really need to hurry this process along. I’m happy to go with natural products. I’m just not into smelling “natural”.

I’ve been doing this detox for a month, and my armpits smell no terrible that I feel sick when I smell them (and that’s been a lot recently :/) I think the vinegar is the culprit (I’ve been using white instead of apple cider)… Anyone able to give me some input on this? I want to be natural, but being stinky is gross

Read about dry brushing in this blog. Will a lofa do, or does it have to be something with bristles? Thanks.

My hubby & I have been using the Native deodorant for 1.5 weeks. First time we’ve tried a natural product. We both are itchy and getting ingrown hairs which we have never had. Any advice?

I am loving this detox! I am a smelly gross sweat queen, and used clinical deodorant to try to tame the stench. I tried one natural deodorant but it just made my clothes reek of sweat instead of me.
I have done this detox for a couple of weeks now and the stench is almost gone. When I exercise hard or get stressed I still smell but it is considerably less offensive. I almost think that my armpits smell like the food I am eating now instead of pungent sweat.
I also have used the magnesium oil spray as deodorant and it is so amazing how it seems to tame my sweat.
Thanks again for sharing, my experience has already prompted others around me to try.
    Love and good wishes always!
