Black Walnut Hull or Juglans Nigra is, just as it sounds, the hull of the black walnut tree. The Black Walnut tree grows in the eastern US and parts of Canada, and while easy to grow, it is not plentiful.

What is Black Walnut?

Black Walnut has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years. It has been used throughout history for treatment of intestinal problems, snakebites, open wounds, ulcers, scurvy, and as one of the most effective laxatives available. Because of its dark color, the outer hull is also used as a dye and was used in brown hair dye until the early 1900s. It is a good source of beta-carotene, acids, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, silicon, zinc, tannin, B-vitamins, and vitamin C.

Today, the hulls are used to help with many conditions. It is known to be a gentle and effective laxative. Black walnut is known as an effective anti-viral and is used to fix warts, which are caused by viruses. Black walnut is an anti-fungus and has been used to fight herpes, cold sores, athlete’s foot, and Candida. It has been used as an antiseptic to combat illness like sexually transmitted infections and malaria and can be used to treat acne.

How it is Used

According to Scientific Labs:

  • “Black Walnut Hull may help to lower blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels and is believed to burn up toxins and fatty materials while balancing blood sugar levels.
  • The tannins in Black Walnut Hull (and leaves) possess an astringent quality that is thought to shrink the sweat glands and reduce excessive sweating. The herb is said to help control menorrhagia, the excessive loss of blood during periods. It is also used to control diarrhea.
  • Black Walnut Hull is considered a tonic that aids digestion and the intestinal system. It helps to relieve colic, heartburn and flatulence. As a cholagogue, it stimulates the flow of bile into the intestines and is thought to ease bilious colic and pain in the spleen.”

Perhaps Black Walnut’s most well-known property is its ability to fight intestinal parasites. It is a well documented vermifuge that is effective at helping the body rid itself of parasites. As a laxative, it expels parasites as part of its cleansing of the body and the high tannin and juglone content is thought to oxygenate the blood and kill parasites. Black walnut is effective against pinworm, ringworm, tapeworm, and other intestinal parasites.

From Mountain Rose Herbs:

Black walnut hulls contain juglone, a chemical that is antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, and a fungicide. As a skin wash, black walnut hulls are used to treat ringworm and yeast infections of the skin. Taken internally, black walnut hulls are used to treat intestinal worms.

Where to Buy Black Walnut Hull

If you own property where the tree is growing, you could harvest it yourself (always check with an herbalist to make sure it’s the correct tree and can be consumed), but If you’re like me and don’t have any of them in your yard, you can purchase it here.

Notes
Black walnut hulls are safe for occasional use of up to 2 weeks at a time, but black walnut heartwood is not. Avoid herbal remedies which contain heartwood.

Black walnut is an extremely potent remedy that should be used under the care of a holistic health professional. Should not be used during pregnancy or illness. Consult your doctor if you have any condition that is severe or lasts longer than a few days.

I am pregnant and want to keep my greys covered without putting harsh chemicals on my head. Is it safe to use just for that purpose? I don’t want to take it internally.

I was considering using nature’s answer brand of black walnut and wormwood for the purpose of deworming my entire family. Would you say it’s safe to use this blend on kids that are 11 to 14? Is there a dosing chart anywhere for this purpose? Let me know your thoughts or if you are familiar with this brand. Thanks

I have read that Black walnut complex (with Wormwood & Clove) also kills spirochetes, the spiral bacteria involved in what they call Lyme’s disease. From what I have read, spirochetes often evade Antibiotics causing them to burrow deeper into the body. (And the antibiotics have now also killed your defensive good bacteria.)

I have found it strengthens one in metaphysical ways too. Connects you with nature and deep cleans – it can show you where your energy is being parasitically drained & redirect it into self nurturing.

    Hello,

I am having terrible issues with chemical sensitivities. I am 54, have white/grey chemically dyed hair and am very interested in using black walnut to dye away the grey. However, I am hesitant because I read on Web MD that black walnut applied topically may cause tongue cancer. I have great respect for your research abilities and hope you can allay my fears in using black walnut hull hair dye for long-term use.

    Kind Regards…

Be super careful with the Diatomaceois earth though if ingesting it. It must be taken with a lot of water or it could obstruct intestines. That happened to me and sent me in an ambulance to the ER twice in as many days.

It was experimental but after 5 times use l started to recover , then left my body to see if could fight the rest off – and it did to my astonishment ! . . I also used for long standing open sore causing cellulitis and mild sepsis but in conjunction with oregano oil after 21 pkts of non suceeding antibiotics . . all they did a doc admitted was take down the inflamation a little ..

Have you heard anything about Black Walnut Extract to reverse tooth decay?

    Reply
    • David

      June 12, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Black Walnut will not reverse tooth decay as it has nothing to do with calcium utilization in the body. To get prevent or reverse tooth decay, it is essential that one take Vitamin D3, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K2 (mk-7 type). There are 2 types of vitamin K.. the usual and the K2.. the usual K is what body uses for blood coagulation to form scab to heal a cut… K2 is what determines where calcium will go in the body. K2 is what activates the proteins in the bone that capture and bind calcium. Notice, Vitamins A, D, and K2 are ALL fat soluble vitamins. We use to get vitamin K2 naturally from the milk of GREEN GRASS fed cows. Cows are essentially penned and grain fed now so that the milk does not contain K2. The only primary source of [email protected] is a Japanese fermented soy bean dish called Natto. Western people cannot usually stomach smell, taste, or texture. So, supplementation is necessary or we are GUARANTEED to be deficient.

Grass fed milk products are popping up more often in stores like Whole Foods, Wegmans, etc. Good to know K2 is easier to incorporate into the diet now!

In fact I read a book about a dentist who swabbed every mouth that had cavities and after 30 yrs of doing this he proved a certain type of bacteria was always present with cavities. Black walnut will kill bacteria and will help you avoid tooth decay.

Herbalist Steven Horne once quoted another herbalist (can’t remember who exactly) who used black walnut powder on cavities. I guess he packed the cavity area with the powder and left it there for some time, repeating until completely healed.

The action has more to do with the anticeptic nature of BWH than anything else (cavities are really just tooth infections) but the calcium content and thyroid support BWH provides no doubt aids in this.

Many people use powdered BWH on a toothbrush for prevention and good oral hygiene. Especially good for loose or inflamed gums.

Flossing is best to help heal gums. But first a dentist must remove all the build up under the gum line. Aka deep cleaning or root planning.

I know you can use them externally to get rid of warts. Pick a black walnut while it is still green, cut it open and rub the green meat over the wart. Do this twice a day for about 3 days. This will stain your skin green, but not to worry, it will wash away. Be careful of clothing as I have not figured out how to get rid of that stain. I have gotten rid of my warts in 3 days doing this.

Also good for “viruses” is elderberry juice concentrate.
(Sorry this is several years later… but hopefully can help someone else?)
When my kids were little, and in wrestling, they got moluscums – little white pimple looking bumps. I gave them a teaspoon of elderberry in a small glass of orange juice and the moluscums went away within a week and a half. The Dr had said theres not much to do to get rid of them, they would just have to go away themselves and could take up to a year. One had developed them first, but both kids bumps went away at the same time.
Elderberry is good at fighting viruses in general. Maybe elderberry could also help with the warts, which are also a virus?

Best remedy I’ve used for warts on my son when he was about 9 (he just turned 30 and hasn’t had them since. I don’t know that that’s the reason. Just that it worked). Potato! Don’t think it matters which kind. I used russet because I had that at home. Just slice a piece off so raw potato is exposed. Rub it in the wart several times (or whenever you think of it) a day for a couple days. Viola!! It’s science, but not rocket science, so just do it when you want, how you want. Same potato works fine til it goes bad!

I put a slice of raw garlic on my son’s wart and kept it on with a bandaid. Within 30 min, the sz was reduced by HALF! Do it again and again until they’re gone. With a child and it being in the hand, you may check into an oil based garlic or something that can be stated on. Not a black walnut cure, but I know what worked for my son.

If you all REALLY WANT to know what it can be used for: Black Walnut tinctures and parasites or infections or diseases related to overintoxication by parasitic-wastes, ie.shingles, arthritis etc.
are explained in a book my Mother used to prolong her life for 8 years called:
“The Cure for All Diseases” Hulga Raeger Clarke I think the author’s name is spelled. My Dad still uses her methods today and he is 82!! (Zapping and Tincture cleanses of the organs)
Warning: must have self-discipline to use her very long and drawn-out cleanses are for REALLY serious about their health people. Not for the partially-committed lets say.

While Hulda Clarke did have a legitimate educational background, she also had some wack-job ideas on natural health and eventually fled the country to Mexico so that she could be out of the reach of the US government after they began to investigate her and the safety of her “zappers” amongst other things.

We can all live longer lives if we begin to take our health seriously and work to keep ourselves healthier and well. Wellness is not some mysterious goal to be achieved. Our society and capitalistic environment keep us sick and unhealthy because sickness is an economy and makes lots of people rich. Natural health gurus with lots of products for sale can also take advantage of people looking for health and wellness. Research Hulda Clarke before following her protocols, she is not all she’s cracked up to be.

We do not live in a capitalistic society but a fascist society controlled by an elite at the top. Socialism and communism are branches of this, so do your homework. True capitalism would not create the horrific situation we are in.

Good point. True Capitalism would create wealth for everyone and no one would have any desire to poison anyone else such as the problem with the gmo’s of the (lunatic) elite, or fluoride in the water, or chemicals sprayed into our environment, all for the purpose of trying to control the people for the benefit of some insane few. So yea… Capitalism is different from the elite fascist society that has been pulled over our eyes and peddled as Capitalism. And people would have true information given them, like about nature and the plants that we need to help our bodies, instead of the system we have now, where they hide what’s good for us and manipulate us into taking their poisonous pharmaceuticals which ruin health, and then the folks taking these go back for more pharma for the ill health that the first batch has caused to occur. So, ignorance is not bliss. Let’s turn the table and learn all we can, uncover that which was hidden, and take our planet back from those criminals.

I was loaned Dr. Hulda Clark’s book and a zapper and started using Black Walnut tincture.
I was on last resort black box drugs for life threatening severe arthritis. $5500.00 worth of drugs every 6 wks.

I was going to the cancer treatment center to receive my drugs by iv through a chemo machine.

Forget all that now that my body is getting cleansed of pathogens with Dr. Hulda Clark’s book “The Cure for all Diseases”

Badmouth her all you want but doctors have done MRI’s, x-rays and drugs for 20 yrs on me and only been getting worse.
Green Black Walnut hull works amazing to rid your body of pathogens and the zapper really has helped complement killing parasites, bacteria and viruses. I am off all drugs and can go for long fast walks for miles now. Pain is gone and flexibility is coming back. Diotamaceous Earth also helps.

Hulga’s book is my second bible. Everyone should read it. It is a fabulous source of knowledge on parasites and toxic chemicals. I have cured so many issues with it. She has Cure for Cancer books also. She was brilliant.

Interesting Kim, my grandpa ate whatever was “edible”, never did anything special for his health, and lived till 92, after being convinced he should move into an old folks home. He no longer had a reason to do anything, right? I don’t think it’s the food, I believe it’s our hearts that determine our health. Healthy hearts choose healthy lives.

I had shingle outbreak last year. The year before I had a bad burn and used 100% medical grade lavender essential oil. This lavender essential oil was like magic on the burn so last year when I got the shingles I remembered the lavender oil and bought some at a health food store. Within 5 days applying it 3 times a day full strength the shingles were gone. If you have never used essential oils before may I suggest that you get a reputable book about them and learn. I am reminded of a story………A man was hungry so a passers-by gave him a fish. Every few days for some time the man would say he was hungry and someone would throw him a fish. One day when the man was waiting to get a fish….a fisherman asked him to come along. The fisherman gave him a pole and taught him to fish. From that day on the man no longer waited for someone to give him a fish. As a matter of fact he was able to earn a bit of money and that gave him peace. So one day the man saw another man. This other man was hungry so the now fisherman asked him to come along…….. I ask for nothing except this one thing……pass on what you know to someone is like giving them the power to live. A gift that must be paid forward in order for humans to survive in the future. I want humanity to continue……don’t you?
