Our family loves this golden milk recipe and it’s a favorite in our home. I used to mostly drink chamomile or green tea for their health benefits. But this tea with its earthy golden spice is perhaps an even more powerful (and soothing) remedy. Turmeric tea has been a staple in ayurvedic medicine for centuries. And golden milk is a tasty way to get the health benefits of turmeric!

Turmeric Golden Milk

You’ve probably encountered turmeric in Indian or Asian dishes. It’s easily recognized by its bright yellow (and I mean very bright yellow!) color.

Called haldi doodh in India, traditional turmeric tea is simply made with milk and turmeric. More modern versions of golden milk add everything from maple syrup to oat milk. Prepared this way with warming spices like cinnamon and ginger, even my kids love the flavor. It tastes similar to chai, but this particular recipe doesn’t contain cardamom.

We have this turmeric tea several times a week, depending on the time of year and what sounds good. I love drinking it, especially before bed. Golden milk aids relaxation and helps boost the immune system while sleeping.

Benefits of Golden Milk

Golden milk is more than tasty. Consuming turmeric supports digestion, immune function, and liver function. It may even offer protection from some types of cancer. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties make it popular for joint pain. It’s also been shown to protect heart and cardiovascular system health.

This tea maximizes the natural antioxidant power of turmeric because it’s served hot. We’re also combining it with other beneficial spices and a little bit of fat for better absorption.

There are several variations on how to make turmeric tea (given below). But here’s what you need to get the full benefits of turmeric. Heat, the turmeric itself, add fat for absorption, and black pepper to activate the turmeric.

Start with this base, and adjust spices and sweeteners to your satisfaction!

Which Milk to Use

Traditionally turmeric tea is made with hot cow milk. If your family is able to tolerate it, grass-fed whole milk adds a nice creamy flavor. Non-dairy milk options include almond milk, cashew milk, pecan, and oat milk. Coconut milk (not the canned kind, but this recipe) is another option that adds some healthy fats. Some people use plant-based soy milk, but it’s not something I personally use or recommend.

It won’t be as creamy, but you can even make this recipe with plain water instead of any milk at all. Bone broth is another great option for the base and you can omit the sweetener if you use broth. If you don’t use milk or broth, consider adding a tiny amount of some kind of fat (like butter or coconut oil) as it increases absorption.

Feeling really brave? Try using camel milk instead!

Notes

  • Turmeric has a natural, vibrant yellow color and may stain blenders and countertops. The color will eventually fade, but making a thick paste of baking soda and water and scrubbing the stain can help.
  • This pre-made turmeric ginger broth is a perfect option if you choose to make this tea with bone broth.

Golden Milk Shortcuts

If you’d rather not mix up the spices each time you make tea, you can easily make a mixture of the spices and just add them to warmed milk when ready.

Option 1: Dry Golden Milk Mix

Mix:

To use, add 2 teaspoons of this mix to 2 cups warmed milk of choice.

Option 2: Golden Turmeric Paste

Another reader, Rose, also shared this variation (thank you Rose!):

Combine:

In a stainless steel pan, combine water, turmeric, and black pepper. It should make a thick paste. Cook and stir for 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add coconut oil, using a whisk to fully mix in the coconut oil. Transfer to a glass jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.

To use, whisk 1 teaspoon of Golden Paste into 2 cups of warmed milk of choice. Add molasses, vanilla extract, and cinnamon to taste.

Turmeric Tea FAQs

This recipe has gained popularity over the years and I’ve received a few (hundred) questions about it. I created this list of commonly asked questions to address the most asked ones:

Where Do You Get Turmeric?

I order turmeric in bulk because I use it in many spice blends, beauty recipes, and this golden milk. Look for one that’s organic, non-irradiated, and has curcumin. The brand will often specify a percentage. I’ve ordered this one on several occasions.

For an even more convenient option, one of my favorite brands, Organifi, makes a delicious ready-made turmeric drink mix. It’s packed with superfoods to help with sleep, improve your immune system, and relax at night.

What If I Don’t Like Turmeric/Pepper/Tea?

This might still be worth a try, as it doesn’t taste like any of those. The black pepper is important here since it has piperine, a compound known to increase the benefits of turmeric.

Can I Omit the Honey/Maple Syrup?

Of course. I find it helps mellow out the strong flavor of the turmeric, but it’s not necessary. You can also use blood sugar-friendly stevia or nutrient-rich blackstrap molasses to get the benefits.

Can I Get Turmeric in my Diet Another Way?

Sure! But this is the tastiest in my opinion. If you aren’t into golden milk lattes or don’t want to take the time to drink them, just add the ingredients to any food, or take alone. For instance, throw some turmeric, black pepper, and olive oil on some roasted veggies to accomplish the same thing.

I Have ___ Health Condition or Am Pregnant/Nursing. Can I Drink This?

I always recommend talking with a doctor before consuming any natural remedy. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports it’s safe to cook with turmeric while pregnant and nursing. However, they caution turmeric supplements shouldn’t be taken without a doctor’s advice. Turmeric can interact with certain medicines.

Since golden milk has turmeric, consult with a doctor or midwife before consuming this if you’re pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition. Talk to someone who knows your situation before making a decision.

Can Kids Drink Turmeric Tea?

I give small amounts to my kids. Turmeric is a spice after all! They love the taste and love to help make it. But check with your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns before drinking this.

This Stained My Counter/Blender/Cup. What Do I Do?

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the stains aren’t harmful and will fade over time. The bad news is that it will take some time. Using a baking soda water paste to clean the stain can help.

Can I Make a Big Batch and Keep it in the Fridge?

Sure! I’ve made up to half a gallon and kept it in the fridge. I find I enjoy it cold too, but you can also reheat it in a small saucepan. This turmeric lemonade is another delicious version to have on hand

Can I Use Fresh Turmeric Root?

Yes! It wasn’t often available where I used to live, so I used dry for this recipe. To use fresh, grate a 1-inch piece of fresh turmeric root into the recipe. This accomplishes the same thing. You may also want to strain it using a fine mesh strainer to remove any remaining pulp or pieces.

I couldn’t read through all the questions, so hopefully I’m not being redundant … I occasionally have an “allergic” reaction to black pepper (coughing fits), is there anything else I can use to increase absorption? This only happens with black pepper, I’m fine with cayenne, white pepper, etc. Would those work instead?

Does this need to be heated? I wanted to just mix these all up and drink whenever I want. Thank you!

I use fresh turmeric every morning in my coffee. I use 2 tespoons of coconut sugar, a tablespoon of coconut oil, and 3 thin slices of fresh peeled turmeric. To minimize staining I only peel the amount I plan to slice immediately. Then I put my cup under my k-cup brewer and add the freshly brewed coffee. I have a large cup, so I add 16 ounces of coffee. I stir it and add 4 ounces of unsweetened almond milk.

Today I have a cold, so I also added 2 thin slices of fresh ginger and a cinnamon stick. It was delicious.

I really like having coconut oil and fresh turmeric in my coffee. Now that I know about black pepper increasing the absorption if the turmeric, I will add that also.

Hi thank you! I started using tumeric for my clients by putting the organic root in fresh juices I would make once a week in the veg/fruit juicer. I also recently started adding the powder on all egg dishes! Egg salad is a staple of one of my clients so I add to that and anything where I use yellow mustard. I add it to scrambled or omelets too! One of my favorite drinks is ginger, tumeric, lemonade! I started making my own V-8 without tomato. I juice beets with greens, kale, celery, ginger, carrots, apples, tumeric root or powder, and add some garlic to half of this too so I have a sweeter juice and one with a garlicly flavor! I had been diagnosed with arthritis (also still lingering soft tissue pain too from a accident/inflamation) in my right hip and now it it pretty much gone!!! I love healing myself ad others through a more natural means. I am going to add this recipe to my diet and others diet. I really appreciate it and I hope I gave others so idea also!

After a lot of experimenting with various recipes for Golden Milk (including this one), I finally figured one out that I like and that my digestive system can handle. A side benefit: when I used coconut milk consistently, instead of switching off every few days with another milk, I discovered two important things – my stomach AND heart issues settled down, and I began to lose weight! Also, I can’t stand black pepper or honey, so I leave those out. Here’s my basic recipe:

    2 cups unsweetened coconut milk
1 heaping Tablespoon each: raw or demerara sugar, and vanilla (I use my homemade vanilla extract)
1 teaspoon each: turmeric and nutmeg (nutmeg is a mood enhancer, and to my taste buds goes better with the turmeric than ginger)

If I want it cold, I do the “shake for 2 minutes, then strain” method. If I want it hot, I add a Tablespoon of coconut oil and heat the mixture until hot, but not boiling.

Reading this blog post again reminds me that I haven’t yet tried using maple syrup. I think I’ll go try it now…..

I just made me some golden milk with 1 cup organic milk (what I had on hand), 1 tsp. Ground turmeric, dash of pepper, 1/4 inch fresh ginger, 2dashes of cinnamon, and 1 large tsp. raw coconut butter (like coconut oil but with all the pulp, etc.). Put it all in a small magic bullet then poured into a saucepan and steamed, not boiled for 5 minutes. Pored into a mug and it’s wonderful. Will try another kind of milk when I go shopping. One turmeric-happy lady, tastes like chai milk.

Will I get the same benefits of turmeric by taking Turmeric Curcumin 1000 mg in pill form? It has 5 mg of Bioperine Black Pepper Extract as well. Do I need to add milk for some reason?

      1. Abey Avatar

Yes, true, milk/coconut fat + black pepper is increasing absorption for turmeric. BUT: turmeric must be simmered (boiled at low heat) for 10 min to activate. This step should not be skipped. After, yes, you can blend or mix. I usually make one small jar of turmeric paste and it will last very well in the fridge for a week or so (just take a teaspoon and mix with the rest of ingredients). Really powerful combination for any type of inflammation, including dental work, twisted ankle, knee pain and cold/flu. My magic helper.

I have been making this way:
    1 tsp Turmeric organic powder
    1 tsp Ginger organic powder
    1 tsp Cinnamon organic powder
    1 tsp Cloves organic powder
    Pinch of Black Pepper
    4 cups Purified Water
I put all these ingredients into a stainless steel pot and bring to a boil whisking.
Once it starts to boil, I let simmer on low for about 7 min.
I turn off and let it sit until I am able to drink warm.
I strain what I am going to drink in my coffee mug.
Then I add Almond milk and
    1 tbs of Honey organic.

The rest of the tea gets stored in the refrigerator. Later in the evening right before bed, I stir it and pour into my stainless steel pot only what I am going to drink; about a cup; I heat over stove and strain it and add my milk and honey.

This recipe lasts me 2 days. I drink 1 cup on empty stomach in morning instead of coffee and 1 cup before bed.

After reading all these posts I want to now try out the paste. Thank you!..

I’ve been drinking this EVERY day (one day I had it twice!). It’s SO delicious and sweet. It honestly tastes super warm, frothy (I blend the ingredients in a Bullet and then add 1 cup of warmed vanilla almond milk with coconut oil to it all) and better than my old Starbucks junk drinks.

I’m wondering if there is a way to make this so that you don’t dirty both the pot and the blender right before you go to bed? Any suggestions? Can you prepare it in advance and then just add boiling water? Would that work?

I have been making Golden Paste with turmeric powder and now have lots of organic turmeric root I would like to use. What is the equivalent measure of fresh turmeric root to turmeric powder to use for the Golden Paste?

My daughter is 17 years, she has lupus. I don’t know how well this will work with her. She takes a lot of medications. I want to try it.

your site is wonderful. Just a note of importance, this golden milk comes from Ayurveda. According to wisdom of ayurveda honey should not be cooked or it becomes toxic. Please adjust your recipe to have practitioners add this after cooking. If you want a sweetener you can cook maple syrup is a safer bet.

    much love

I heat coconut oil (organic cold pressed) in a pan and use 1 T Tumeric lots of black pepper because I love it and it helps your body absorb Tumeric. I mix my scrambled eggs in and enjoy. I have recently read up on eggs and they are good for you in moderation. I also read Tumeric has to be heated to bring out the healing properties. I’m not really a tea person.
