Our family loves this golden milk recipe and it’s a favorite in our home. I used to mostly drink chamomile or green tea for their health benefits. But this tea with its earthy golden spice is perhaps an even more powerful (and soothing) remedy. Turmeric tea has been a staple in ayurvedic medicine for centuries. And golden milk is a tasty way to get the health benefits of turmeric!

Turmeric Golden Milk

You’ve probably encountered turmeric in Indian or Asian dishes. It’s easily recognized by its bright yellow (and I mean very bright yellow!) color.

Called haldi doodh in India, traditional turmeric tea is simply made with milk and turmeric. More modern versions of golden milk add everything from maple syrup to oat milk. Prepared this way with warming spices like cinnamon and ginger, even my kids love the flavor. It tastes similar to chai, but this particular recipe doesn’t contain cardamom.

We have this turmeric tea several times a week, depending on the time of year and what sounds good. I love drinking it, especially before bed. Golden milk aids relaxation and helps boost the immune system while sleeping.

Benefits of Golden Milk

Golden milk is more than tasty. Consuming turmeric supports digestion, immune function, and liver function. It may even offer protection from some types of cancer. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties make it popular for joint pain. It’s also been shown to protect heart and cardiovascular system health.

This tea maximizes the natural antioxidant power of turmeric because it’s served hot. We’re also combining it with other beneficial spices and a little bit of fat for better absorption.

There are several variations on how to make turmeric tea (given below). But here’s what you need to get the full benefits of turmeric. Heat, the turmeric itself, add fat for absorption, and black pepper to activate the turmeric.

Start with this base, and adjust spices and sweeteners to your satisfaction!

Which Milk to Use

Traditionally turmeric tea is made with hot cow milk. If your family is able to tolerate it, grass-fed whole milk adds a nice creamy flavor. Non-dairy milk options include almond milk, cashew milk, pecan, and oat milk. Coconut milk (not the canned kind, but this recipe) is another option that adds some healthy fats. Some people use plant-based soy milk, but it’s not something I personally use or recommend.

It won’t be as creamy, but you can even make this recipe with plain water instead of any milk at all. Bone broth is another great option for the base and you can omit the sweetener if you use broth. If you don’t use milk or broth, consider adding a tiny amount of some kind of fat (like butter or coconut oil) as it increases absorption.

Feeling really brave? Try using camel milk instead!

Notes

  • Turmeric has a natural, vibrant yellow color and may stain blenders and countertops. The color will eventually fade, but making a thick paste of baking soda and water and scrubbing the stain can help.
  • This pre-made turmeric ginger broth is a perfect option if you choose to make this tea with bone broth.

Golden Milk Shortcuts

If you’d rather not mix up the spices each time you make tea, you can easily make a mixture of the spices and just add them to warmed milk when ready.

Option 1: Dry Golden Milk Mix

Mix:

To use, add 2 teaspoons of this mix to 2 cups warmed milk of choice.

Option 2: Golden Turmeric Paste

Another reader, Rose, also shared this variation (thank you Rose!):

Combine:

In a stainless steel pan, combine water, turmeric, and black pepper. It should make a thick paste. Cook and stir for 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add coconut oil, using a whisk to fully mix in the coconut oil. Transfer to a glass jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.

To use, whisk 1 teaspoon of Golden Paste into 2 cups of warmed milk of choice. Add molasses, vanilla extract, and cinnamon to taste.

Turmeric Tea FAQs

This recipe has gained popularity over the years and I’ve received a few (hundred) questions about it. I created this list of commonly asked questions to address the most asked ones:

Where Do You Get Turmeric?

I order turmeric in bulk because I use it in many spice blends, beauty recipes, and this golden milk. Look for one that’s organic, non-irradiated, and has curcumin. The brand will often specify a percentage. I’ve ordered this one on several occasions.

For an even more convenient option, one of my favorite brands, Organifi, makes a delicious ready-made turmeric drink mix. It’s packed with superfoods to help with sleep, improve your immune system, and relax at night.

What If I Don’t Like Turmeric/Pepper/Tea?

This might still be worth a try, as it doesn’t taste like any of those. The black pepper is important here since it has piperine, a compound known to increase the benefits of turmeric.

Can I Omit the Honey/Maple Syrup?

Of course. I find it helps mellow out the strong flavor of the turmeric, but it’s not necessary. You can also use blood sugar-friendly stevia or nutrient-rich blackstrap molasses to get the benefits.

Can I Get Turmeric in my Diet Another Way?

Sure! But this is the tastiest in my opinion. If you aren’t into golden milk lattes or don’t want to take the time to drink them, just add the ingredients to any food, or take alone. For instance, throw some turmeric, black pepper, and olive oil on some roasted veggies to accomplish the same thing.

I Have ___ Health Condition or Am Pregnant/Nursing. Can I Drink This?

I always recommend talking with a doctor before consuming any natural remedy. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports it’s safe to cook with turmeric while pregnant and nursing. However, they caution turmeric supplements shouldn’t be taken without a doctor’s advice. Turmeric can interact with certain medicines.

Since golden milk has turmeric, consult with a doctor or midwife before consuming this if you’re pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition. Talk to someone who knows your situation before making a decision.

Can Kids Drink Turmeric Tea?

I give small amounts to my kids. Turmeric is a spice after all! They love the taste and love to help make it. But check with your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns before drinking this.

This Stained My Counter/Blender/Cup. What Do I Do?

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the stains aren’t harmful and will fade over time. The bad news is that it will take some time. Using a baking soda water paste to clean the stain can help.

Can I Make a Big Batch and Keep it in the Fridge?

Sure! I’ve made up to half a gallon and kept it in the fridge. I find I enjoy it cold too, but you can also reheat it in a small saucepan. This turmeric lemonade is another delicious version to have on hand

Can I Use Fresh Turmeric Root?

Yes! It wasn’t often available where I used to live, so I used dry for this recipe. To use fresh, grate a 1-inch piece of fresh turmeric root into the recipe. This accomplishes the same thing. You may also want to strain it using a fine mesh strainer to remove any remaining pulp or pieces.

How many does this serve? 3 cups of coconut milk would be a lot for me to handle by myself! 😉

I use a half teaspoon Turmeric in my protein shake every morning. Which helps with my inflammation due to fibro and RA.

I can’t wait to try this. I usually have a “turmeric tea” first thing in the morning to start my day, after my coconut oil pulling, of course but this sounds soothing and relaxing for evening! Like a chai minus caffeine.

Thanks for this! Just curious though about the coconut milk. The can says serving size of 5 so do you drink the whole thing?

A couple weeks ago I made a turmeric tea that was similar ?o this one. It made me feel nauseous and kind of sick. Is this normal? Should I have started with less and worked my way up?

      1. Mila Avatar

Why 2 cups? Because 1 cup is too little for 1 tsp of turmeric? Would cutting the recipe in half have the same effect or is there a reason we should do 1 tsp turmeric?

    1. Kassia Avatar

I just drank this and feel so nauseated. I cook with turmeric so I had no idea I should start with less :/
I took 2 charcoal capsules right away and 2 more a little while later…I really hope they do their magic!

Same here. I felt nauseous but this stuff made me GO and totally cleaned me out (and I have chronic constipation)! I’ll be drinking this again but with less turmeric.

I’ve had the same happen to me. With golden milk and with hot chocolate. It’s the coconut milk I think…too much, too creamy, too fat. I usually do half water (or more) and half coconut milk. Much better.

In curries mostly. I also add half teaspoon to a glass of cows milk and drink before bed.

Awesome! I’ve wanted to try turmeric for a while but had no idea how to mask the taste. Excited to try this for menstrual cramps.

I make a turmeric tea using the following:

    8 oz hot water
    Juice of 1/2 a lemon
    1/8 t. turmeric
    1/8 t. ground ginger
    Dash of cayenne pepper
    1 t. Coconut oil

    Mix continuously while drinking.

Sometimes I add honey to sweeten it a bit.

This tastes good and always makes me feel better!

I can’t wait to go home and make this, I got everything at home and been making teas lately. So if I don’t have a can, 3 cups of Coconut milk right?

    1. Kassia Avatar

I’ve recently been enjoying golden milk before bed. Ive been making it with raw cow’s or goat’s milk, but today I used homemade coconut milk because we are low on dairy. It was still good but not as creamy. The first few times I tried it (years ago) I used canned coconut milk and it was SO rich it made me nauseous. Glad I finally figured out how to enjoy it! I’m hoping that drinking this every day will reduce inflammation in my body and lower my CRP!

Hi. I just made this recipe. The taste is great, but my issue is that the recipe says serves 4. Since I was the only one drinking I divided it by 4 and made 1 serving. Came out with 1/2 cup. Only 4 ounces. Is that correct? Thanks!

Hello! I’ve been following your blogs for a few years and absolutely love your website! I refer recipes all the time and use some of them myself, particularly the elderberry syrup. My husband and I just tried the turmeric tea last night. We loved it! We’re big tea drinkers. I wanted to check to see if we’re okay to summit the full recipe between each other on a regular basis or if that could be detrimental?

            Thank you! 🙂

This looks yummy! Could I just use cow’s milk? That is my milk of choice ????

    1. Laura Avatar

Of course you can but if you’re wanting to do this because it’s good for you then at least switch to raw milk. Pasteurized is horrible for you.

      1. Diana Avatar

I’ve only tried making this with sweetened vanilla almond milk, but I don’t see what’s so terrible about using pasteurized milk. According to the FDA, pasteurization doesn’t significantly decrease the nutritional value of milk, nor does it cause any allergies to develop. Also, raw milk is 150 times more likely to cause foodborne illnesses than pasteurized milk.

I use fresh turmeric root just like the fresh ginger by grating about a tsp worth of each into about one and a half to two cups of coconut milk and heating until steaming (or tiny bubbles form along the edge of the pan). Strain the liquid through a mesh strainer and add raw honey to taste. Yum and healthy!

Thanks Gretchen, I just stocked up on the fresh roots. Nice to see the original recipe using the powder for when I run out. The first time I saw a recipe for this at all, they were using fresh roots but it seemed a bit complicated. Looking forward to trying it! 🙂

      2. Kiki Avatar

Fresh Turmeric is wonderful but stains really badly I blend a load of fresh roots in a high power blender with a little water and then freeze a whole batch in ice cube trays. It stains the blender orange but will wear off. I do the same with ginger, and fresh pressed lemon juice. That lasts me for a while in freezer. During the day I drink water with a cube each ot turmeric, ginger and lemon. Very nice.
I use a cube of this turmeric for golden milk. Fresh turmeric is so much nicer than the powder and doing it this way you only have the mess every so often

  17. Monica Avatar

I read some where that using turmeric one has to use oil with it… Is that true?

    1. Heather Avatar

I have not heard anything about oil but you do need to have add black pepper to it.

      1. Jessica Avatar

I’ve been told from an auyervedic practitioner that adding oil to warm tumeric milk helps lubricator the joints (almond or sesame was recommended).

The black pepper helps with the absorbtion of the tumeric, it can make a heck of a difference to how much your body absorbs, about 80% apparantly.

I use Rosemary Gladstar’s recipe for Golden Milk, which does call for almond oil, though I’m not sure whether it is actually required as a medium. In her recipe you first make a paste out of 1/4 cup turmeric and about 3/4 to 1 cup water. Simmer on the lowest setting until it becomes a thick paste then transfer to a jar and store in the fridge until ready to use. Then use 1 tsp of the paste, 1 tsp almond oil, 1 cup milk and honey if desired. Mix in a blender. When I make the paste I also add 1 tbsp each of cinnamon, ginger, astragalus and ashwagandha. All of these herbs have strong anti inflammatory properties. I had a hysterectomy almost 2 months ago and I’ve been taking 1-3 glasses of Golden Milk per day in place of pain pills. I only took the pills for the first 2 days after the surgery. After speaking to other women who have had the surgery I have found that this is unusual to say the least. Many women are still in pain and taking pills months later.

    3. Heather Avatar

This is absolutely true, Turmeric is not water soluble, it needs a good oil or fat in order to be absorbed by the body. The freshly cracked black pepper increases the bioavailability of the active compound in the Turmeric.

    4. Valdine Avatar

Yes, just like pepper you need to add oil for a better absorption. I used cocunut oil

If using the canned coconut milk, you don’t need any extra oil. There is 10g of fat per serving in the canned stuff. I’m sitting here staring at the 1/4″ layer of oil floating at the top of my mug. Next time I think I’ll add more water than 1c.

        1. Belen Avatar

Hi Angela & Erin, I don’t know how to reply to your replies, so I’m just replying to mine and hopefully you will be able to read it.

My daughter does have PANDAS Erin – are you on any of the support groups on FB? How old is your child? It literally reduced her symptoms by 90% to start on turmeric – it took about a week and it was the worst flare up she has had yet. She does take pills sometimes too as she does get tired of the taste of the tea.

Angela – she actually just drinks hers using the powdered spice (1 tsp) mixed with honey and cinnamon and warm water. And I’ve tried the milk method and actually prefer just drinking it with water also.

I started using for post chemo bone pain; 2000mg b.i.d. I wasn’t sure it was working so I stopped taking it. When pain got worse, I realized that it must have been helping and started it again. Now I take 4000mg b.i.d. It really helps alot. I take it with black pepper and coconut oil. I am also hoping that it will prevent my breast cancer from returning, as I refuse to take Tamoxifen or anastrozole. I also take dandelion root (1000 mg caps. q.i.d.)
I was just able to find fresh turmeric root today. I am researching different ways to consume it. Seeing how others take it. I am optimistic. I like this group.

          1. Laura Avatar

I’m a member of ‘turmeric user group UK’ where loads of info’ is available. It has been found that turmeric powder is more potent than the root. Also cooking the turmeric on simmer for 7 to 10 minutes releases the curcumin to optimum levels. Freshly ground black pepper releases piperine which increases bioavailability, makes it easier for the body to absorb.

        1. Fiona Avatar

Personally I would not use dairy milk as it is not good for your health. There are many plant based milks that are much better for you. You can get coconut milk or almond milk in cartons and they are so easy to use. Xx

          1. Sherry Avatar

Raw milk is the ticket, if u can get it. I’m lucky enough to be 10 miles away from a large Amish population and I can get it from a couple of licensed folks. The taste difference is incredible! Like a vanilla milkshake and all of the nutrition hasn’t been “pasteurized” out of it. It actually has a layer of cream on the top (just like when I was a child -I’m 56). Real milk heals. Probably why the medicine cal me industry either hasn’t been educated on it or they’re withholding that info. Google something like raw milk versus pasteurized milk. You’ll be shocked when u find out whats being sold to the, average consumer!!

Just heat it in a pan, and refrigerate – use about a tsp at a time and it can last a couple weeks:

          1/4 cup of turmeric powder
          1/2 teaspoon of ground pepper
          1/2 cup of filtered water

I make my own organic products where possible, I make turmeric paste from fresh organic turmeric root. When blended properly it should be as smooth as mustard and has a fresh taste instead of the rank taste of the powder. Then I use it in cooking, salad oil mixes, etc. Refrigerate in sealed, last several weeks.

Place the following into blender and add filtered water if needed to get right consistancy. Enjoy
1 cup fresh organic roots cut into small pieces
1/2 cup organic oil Olive or Coconut
1/4 cup organic raw vinegar (or fresh lemon juice)

Bitter?? I think something went wrong! When made correctly (and with fresh spices) it should taste similar to a chai latte with a little spicy bite in the finish from the black pepper. Did you add honey?

Turmeric is bitter tasting, but the bitter taste is removed by first boiling the turmeric to make a paste.. To make turmeric paste, add 1/4 cup turmeric to 1/2 to 1 cup water. Place ingredients in a saucepan and cook over medium heat for 7-10 minutes. Bring o a slight boil, then turn down to simmer. Stir often. Boiling temperatures destroy the health benefits of the turmeric. Remove from the heat and let it cool. When cool, refrigerate or freeze. Refrigerated turmeric paste older than 40 days old can develop a metallic taste, so don’t make large batches. If you want to freeze the paste, measure 1 teaspoon amounts onto a paper plate or sheet of parchment paper and place in the freezer. When frozen transfer into another storage container with a tight fitting lid or into a zipper top bag. Remove one piece of frozen turmeric paste per serving of Golden Milk.

I may be speaking sacrilegiously here, but since I live in a semi-tractor hauling freight I cook a bit differently.
I cut the spices by half, all of it is organic. Input half a cup of unsweetened vanilla coconut milk into a ceramic cup, added the ground spices (turmeric, cinnamon, ground black pepper, ginger) and molasses, along with about a teaspoon of coconut oil. I mixed the ground spices as well as I could, with lots of little balls of the turmeric left. Put it in the microwave for a minute, pulled it out and mixed again, cooked another 30 seconds, mixed again, another 30 seconds, another mixing. Then I put it on defrost to keep it hot, and ran it for 10 minutes. At that point it was hot, but had not boiled, everything was mixed with no little balls of turmeric. I added more milk to it and heated it for another 30 seconds and VOILA! golden milk drinking time. Not at all bitter, not a sugary sweet drink, but a nice pleasant smooth drink.
            Good luck with it.

All curry is is a dish prepared in sauce. So basically all of you are saying you don’t like sauce. If you don’t like one curry, go on to the next. There are hundreds of different types of curries. If you say that you don’t like curry because you tried just one and didn’t like it, that’s like saying you don’t like all fruit because you only tried a banana and didn’t like it.

Tumeric is used in Hawaii to cleanse the kidney, liver and colon .. It also clears plaque in the veins. Cleansing is good however depending on what your diet maybe such a cleansing may have an impact that your not ready to experience. Start gradually and see how your body reacts .. It’s different for everyone.

I’m assuming from reading experience basically like a detox or “healing crisis” – in other words – potentially diarrhea or maybe even a sore stomach. This often happens if u start to cleanse your body of toxins at a higher level suddenly, which is why often dosage suggestions say to start small and build up.

I am looking forward to detoxing after 3 months holiday eating a Southern States diet!! Soooo much sugar, meat and processed food.

          2. Laura Avatar

Your body may go through a detox, which may manifest itself in any number of ways, hence you should start with small doses (quarter teaspoon X 3 daily) increasing every 5 days until you have the desired affect, then stay at that dose. Some people take 2 teaspoons 4 x daily, it depends on the individual.
It leaves the system after 6 hours so 3 or 4 doses daily is recommended.
The black pepper should be freshly ground as it loses its piperine (the essential part) very quickly.

I wondering if that’s an allergic reaction which, according to researcher Dr. Hulda Clarke, all allergies are indication of toxic liver, regardless of age. It could be worth it to try again, but only do a quarter of it. Then if there’s no response you can slowly increase it over a week or two.

Please look up the benefits of coconut oil. There are studies showing that adding 4 TBSP of coconut oil to your diet a day, while lowering other oils will cause you to lose on average 8-13 lbs of body fat (men, were found to lose 13 lbs…women 8). Coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride and the liver sends it directly to be used as energy, while other fats, long chains, are immediately stored as fat. Forget everything you were ever taught on Coconut oil. It was all wrong. Coconut oil IS the healthiest oil along with Avocado. Olive Oil is in that group as well, but upon learning that the Mafia has taken over olive oil production and now mixes it with cheap chemicals….I won’t even touch it anymore.

Rosemary, it is an emulsifier and stabilizer. There are studies showing it causes gut permeability and other issues. When I was drinking coconut milk I finally started making it from organic shredded coconut whizzed in the blender with water (takes a few minutes). It’s really easy to make a big batch and keep it in the fridge. I liked that it had no additives. I discovered that coconut was raising my blood pressure 🙁 That’s the only reason I stopped.

It’s a chilly, damp morning and I am drinking this as I write…makes my insides feel warm and cozy!
I make up my coconut milk from a package that I purchase at a health food store. It is shipped in packages of six so when I purchase six packages I receive the “bulk” discount. I dissolve it in double the amount of hot water to stretch it further and it still tastes plenty creamy! When you think about it, this drink ends up costing around the same as the unhealthy coffee shop drinks, so I feel good knowing I am spending that money to bring healing to my entire body!
I also added a pinch of pink salt and a 1/4 tsp. of Cardamom…another native Indian spice that has MANY healing properties as well as adds another layer of exotic warmth to the taste. This is definitely going to be a staple drink for me…thanks so much for posting the recipe.

Me too. It’s not my favorite flavor. But I do love golden milk. I have made it by the gallon and drank it cold too, or reheated it. I make the paste, freezing some in silicone molds storing in baggies, and putting the rest in a jar in fridge. I’ll take a big scoop, about tbsp or so and add it to my gelatin/green powder drink, which is very unpleasant. But with the paste it all mellows together and is at least drinkable. I’ve wondered if I could add blackstrap molasses’ it might make it actually good. But I’m not sure if the minerals should be taken with the greens. I don’t know why not, but… still not sure.
