Although it’s been several years since salted caramel became all the rage, it continues to be a popular choice for coffee drinks and desserts today. I’ve shared my recipe for my favorite way to drink coffee, but I realized that it could be easily adapted to be a salted caramel latte and still be healthy!

If you’re a gourmet coffee fan (I am too), stop spending $5 (or more!) to consume a less healthy alternative. Start making delicious (and healthier) coffee at home!

What Exactly Is a Latte?

A latte is made with espresso, warm milk, and milk foam. At a coffee shop, they have an espresso machine to handle those jobs. There are plenty of other ways to make lattes at home though without fancy equipment. (Of course, if you love coffee, you may want to consider these non-toxic ways to brew a finer cup.)

In place of the espresso, I just use brewed coffee. Then I usually add some butter and coconut oil for healthy fats. Just give these a whirl in your blender and you have a frothy, satisfying latte!

How I Make a Healthy Salted Caramel Latte at Home

Obviously, to turn a regular latte into a salted caramel latte, you’re going to need something sweet with the flavors of caramel, and just a dash of salt.

I like to avoid the refined sugars and artificial flavors and sweeteners of the commercial version so I turn to more wholesome ingredients I already have in my kitchen:

  • My normal version: I don’t like my coffee super sweet, so I just mix in a little vanilla extract, drizzle a little raw honey over the top, and sprinkle it with a little Himalayan salt.
  • My “treat” version: If I really want something a little more decadent, I’ll top the latte with a dollop of whipped cream. (Here’s a dairy-free version too.)
  • For a mocha: Just add up to a tablespoon of cocoa powder into the blender with the coffee.

Tip: Not a coffee person? This recipe is also great with chai tea!

We have a French press, which also works well for making milk foam. Check out this article for that and other frothing ideas.

Here is a mistake I made that actually turned out pretty well:
Make the salted caramel latte. To add a bit of extra healthiness to it, add some unflavored gelatin. Now, go to work. (the drive is short, so you don’t drink much of it on the way there). Forget the latte in the car, where the weather is about 30*F. When you go out to your car to drive around ( I deliver mail out of my own car), remember the latte and try to drink it. Realize that the gelatin has indeed done what it does, and JELLED.
Remember in the 60’s or 70’s, those layered jello’s? The three layers of whipped jello that reduced to clear at the bottom? (or am I giving away my age here???)
Well, that is what I ended up with, and actually it was pretty good!!! The butter and coconut oil foamed up nicely and formed the top layer, and the bottom was a wonderful coffee flavored jello. and Yep, I ATE it, with a spoon!!!
I think I may just do this again, only on purpose!!! 😉

That sounds lovely and you didn’t even need to make it indoors but while you work it sets to work. 😉 🙂 wow we have so many mix match options here. Chocolate. Latte. Chocolate latte. Health adds. Orange and mint. Coffee and tea alone. Never tried chocolate tea before never imagined. Anyway and not jello latte. ; p. You may need add orange to that jello see what it taste like next 😉

I love this recipe I tried it the first day I saw it managed to have all the ingredients and being a fan of sweet caramel type drinks I thought what`s to loose. Katie this was amazing!!!! Better than Starbucks on so many levels. Glad that is a healthier option without the 5 – 10 dollar price tag like at starbucks. Thank you so much!!!

I loved it!! I made this late this morning! I usually just do the regular bulletproof, but this added a fun change of pace. The raw cocao in it was great the other day as well!!

Oh my! I made it and oh my! Just yum. I did sprinkle nutmeg and cinnamon on top and oh my. You get the point!

Would the mini milk frother/hand blender gadget work rather than using the blender or would there not be enough power to emulsify the coconut oil and butter?

Just made this for breakfast and oh my is it a mighty tasty treat! The one thing I did differently was to add a teaspoon of gelatin because, well, why not get some extra gelatin in your diet whenever you can?

Oh, I love salted caramel coffee… and hot chocolate! I used to drink Starbucks’ version like crazy. I can’t wait to give this a try!
I had to share it on my blog’s My Week on Wednesday post this week. 🙂

I would love to get the bulletproof coffee, especially since I drink coffee every day, but that is just ridiculously (crazy) expensive.

I LOVE the mug, and the drink is something to die for while I drag my feet through finals season.

store-bought coffee creamer was the last really un-natural food item i couldn’t bear to let go of… i made myself one of these this morning, and although i added some sugar and raw milk, this has convinced me i can live without that unhealthy creamer! thank you so much for posting this!

This is delicious! I also love orange spice coffee like Starbucks had over the summer. I drink it hot with orange extract, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Looks delish, thanks for sharing the recipe. Couldn’t believe how tasty bulletproof coffee was when I first tried it, now will have to give this one a go.

I’m loving dark chocolate with sea salt right now so this sounds great! Do you think it would still be good without the butter? I’ve been trying to avoid dairy because I heard how it can be bad for skin (and I’m trying to clear mine after going off birth control)
Should I use a bit more coconut oil? What are your thoughts on this?

I love your website and all of the great information! I do not drink coffee, but love salted caramel hot chocolate. Is there a healthy way to make this as hot chocolate?

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

Yep, just use warm coconut milk in place of the coffee, heat over a stove and add the cocoa powder (up to two tablespoons for that recipe) and honey to taste and sprinkle with salt and stir with vanilla extract.

Hello I really love your website. Im very new. I love coffee, I went top the website you suggest that sales healthier coffee but it scares me the warning at the bottom. Can you please explain if is something of concern?

You could just heat up some milk, then add your hot cocoa ingredients (cocoa, sweetner, etc.) than add the butter, coconut oil, salt and vanilla! Viola. 🙂

I know this is old. But can’t wait to try it. Got all the options now and mix and matches if this does go down smoothly. Me I like things simple. Milk sugar tea or coffee. With coffee I like it a lot smoother. Strong enough to go ahhh but not cringe with the strength. I was planning to go cold turkey before. Water and soups. But I found I will also need my settle down comforter for now. Perhaps it is a bad thing leaning of tea for anxiety comfort. I found facing anxiety to improves it next time. But anyway. i’m just wondering what are your thoughts on red tea? I like tea. I’ve never been a fan of flavoured hot drinks like herbal tea fruit tea. But I wonder if I wanted red tea as a treat or once a day. What is the health benefits of red tea. Also wondering because I heard milk is meant to mess up the antioxidants in tea and coffee what’s your thoughts of milk is that just the unsure and Un raw kind. Will raw milk be okay every once in awhile if I have to have tea that way. But really I’d o believe butter will be a perfect substitute in tea and coffee alike. It’s just so I know I have a back up 😉
