We are big fans of gelatin at our house and we use it in a lot of different ways. These homemade fruit snacks and homemade marshmallows are the kid-favorites in our house, and I can feel good about giving it to them since it is a source of protein and vitamins.

Erase the idea of gummy bears as a junky treat from your mind… these homemade fruit snacks look just like them (although their texture is a little softer, like jello) but they’re actually health food!

Healthy Gummy Bears? Yes!

Why make homemade fruit snacks? I can think of three good reasons:

  • It’s a really quick and easy recipe (even the kids can do this one themselves)
  • They are SO much healthier than store-bought
  • They’re really fun to make!

Not only do these fruit snacks have no artificial colors or flavors, they have the gut-soothing benefits and protein of gelatin. The kombucha adds nutrients as well, making these fruit snacks even healthier.

Tip: Add additional nutrition by make these chewable vitamins instead or make them flu-busting gummy bears with a few simple substitutions.

How to Make Homemade Fruit Snacks

Again, this recipe is super simple. All you need is kombucha or fruit juice (100% juice or freshly squeezed), a candy mold, and powdered unflavored gelatin from a good (grass-fed) source.

Heat the juice or kombucha, whisk in the gelatin, pour into molds, and let it set! You’ll have fruit snacks for a crowd in no time.

If you don’t have a mold, an oiled container works in a pinch. Cut gummies into small cubes once set.

Go with the classic bear shaped molds or try fun assorted geometric shapes, dinosaur molds, bugs and flowers, and even this unlikely combo Lego/hearts set so you have something to please everyone!

The recipe fills about 4-5 of these molds, or a medium baking dish (oiled). If you use a baking dish, just cut the fruit snacks once they gel. If you use the molds, stick them in the refrigerator to firm up. Tip: After they are set, put them in the freezer for 5 minutes to make them come out easier.

Homemade Fruit Snacks Recipe

Healthy homemade fruit snacks packed with nutrients from gelatin, fruit, kombucha (optional), and juice.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fruit juice (or kombucha or other liquid of choice)
  • ¼ cup honey (or maple syrup, optional)
  • 1 cup berries (pureed, optional)
  • 8 TBSP  gelatin powder

Instructions

  • Combine fruit juice or kombucha and honey/maple syrup if using in a small saucepan.
  • Heat over low heat until warm and starting to simmer, but not hot or boiling.
  • Add pureed fruit, if using.
  • Sprinkle the gelatin over the juice mixture while whisking or using an immersion blender. Continue doing this until all gelatin is incorporated and the mixture is smooth. Adding the gelatin too quickly will make it more difficult to get the mixture to incorporate. An immersion blender is not necessary but greatly speeds up the process.
  • As soon as the gelatin is mixed in and the mixture is smooth, pour into molds or a lined/greased baking dish and place in the refrigerator or freezer until hardened.
  • Pop the gummies out of the molds and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • It is important to have all ingredients ready before beginning as you’ll need to work quickly once you start.
  • Make sure you are using gelatin, not collagen hydrolysate or peptides as they will not gel. I’ve also had some feedback that the Great Lakes brand of gelatin doesn’t work well in this recipe.

    Collagen Hydrolysate Is a nutritional supplement and specifically processed to prevent gelling. It’s made to dissolve in water and foods and be eaten as is. You would need to purchase the gelatin version. Be careful because this brand uses gelatin in its name for both varieties. Confusing! The actually gelatin will have “GELATIN” in large text near the center and will not mention hydrolsate.

    My kids and I just attempted this recipe, and sadly it came out as hard as rubber. I can’t even cut it. ? They are literally playing with it as if it’s a toy. And let me add that I realize this is an error on my part, that’s why I didn’t give it a low rating. I’m thinking I stirred it too long and waited for it to become too thick? I wanted to make sure I slowly incorporated the gelatin as the recipe stated, and that it wasn’t clumpy. Maybe I was a bit too slow mixing it in? What do you think? Totally bummed because I wasted all of the awesome ingredients but I will definitely try it again! And at least we got a good laugh out of it. Anyways, thank you Wellness Mama, for all that you do! I love you, your site and all that you stand for.

      It is important to move quickly for sure. I make sure the liquid in the pan is very warm so that it doesnt cool and mold too quickly too. Which brand of gelatin did you use? There seems to be some variation among brands. Next time, if using the same brand gelatin, perhaps also try adding an additional 1/2 or 1 cup liquid.

        I had this problem too… I used fresh fruit instead of frozen (strawberries/blueberries), cherry juice, agar powder, and honey. They taste like rubber and have the same consistency. I’m going to try the recipe again but was curious if you had any advice before doing so.

    Tried this with juicing strawberries and an apple at home and using frozen organic cherries purred with raw local honey- Turned out great! I did find it hard to use the “claw” immersing blender it, even on low it made a mess, had to switch to stiring, unfortunately is not as great at blending so i did get some gelatin chunks, but it doesn’t bother me.

    I made these for my boys last night as little Easter bunny gummies and his them around the house in plastic eggs (yes I know….plastic…tsk tsk!) anyway I was super pleased how easy they were and turned out perfect! I used a silicone mold. The boys loved them and my 5 yr old was amazed that Mommy made Gummies! He always wants gummies but I will never buy that store bought junk, but sometimes daycare has them. Anyway love it and this will be another favorite to add to our collection of healthier treats!

    I made a gelatin recipe almost exactly like this but I was unable to pour into molds or dish before it became gelatin despite working quickly. I used Great Lakes unflavoured gelatin and I was able to make it smooth but it just became too firm before I could pour. Can I reheat the mixture to liquify it and try to re-pour it into dish?

    Maybe the reason so many people have problems with he recipe is the ratios. In the ingredients list it says 2 cups of fruit juice and in he directions it says 1. Which one works best? I would assume 1 so that it isn’t runny.

    This recipe was a disaster. I used Great Lakes beef gelatin, and followed the instructions exactly. The minute I added the gelatin powder to the cool water it began to harden into a big rubbery lump. I then attempted to mix in the other ingredients as instructed but the rubbery lumps would not mix with the the other ingredients. I used pureed mango so you can only imagine what this substance resembled. I ended up getting out the electric mixer to try to get the gelatin lumps to blend in with the mango puree and fruit juice but it did not help. I then poured it into a shallow plan to set. After 8 hours it is still liquidy. It will now go down the drain. Huge waste of money – 1/2 cup expensive gelatin and other ingredients plus a big mess to clean up. I don’t see how other people have had success with this recipe at all.

      It’s possible that they didn’t turn out as well because of the type gelatin you were using. I’ve noticed that Vital Proteins works better for this recipe than Great Lakes…

    Thank you very much for this recipe, I think this a great healthier substitute to the store bought brands, I used an infused flavoured green tea and made 2 different kinds -apple and raspberry. I also used Knox and used 8 pkgs which was less than 1/2 c. It solidified perfectly. I will try variations of this recipe as I think by using the tea I didn’t get the sweetness I wanted. I am surprised by some of the comments in here and whether you are a vegan or meat eater there are many problems with our chemically grown veg’s and our meat supplies. A debate could go on forever. But this is a recipe not a controversial topic.
    I bake cakes, cookies, and feed my kids yogurt with bananas and honey for a treat, and eat very healthy. But I find these days trying to find different snacks that we are allowed to send to school that is not artificial with ingredients I can’t read makes these little snacks a great option and feel good sending them to school with my kids.

    Hello, first, thank you for the recipe!

    I did have trouble with it.

    I was already into making it, when I noticed that the ingredients said 2 cups of kombucha and the instructions only mentioned setting aside one cup of kombucha.

    Can you help with this?

    Mine turned out more like a barely gelled smoothie. I don’t mind eating them, but was hoping for more of a gummy.

    Okay, after wasting a bunch of money on expensive gelatin and organic berries, I think I figured out the flaw in the way this recipe is written which might be causing the problems everyone has. I think if you add the gelatin to not just a 1/2 cup water, but also the 1 cup extra fruit juice that isn’t addressed in the directions but included in the ingredients, you won’t get the blobby mess everyone seems to be getting…. but I’m afraid to try again to see if this works and waste more ingredients!

    I’m confused on the recipe. The ingredients say you need 2 cups of juice. Then the directions say to set aside 1 cup. Then it never addresses why that cup is set aside or when to add it. Do you add it at the end with the pureed fruit and other cup of juice? Then why set it aside? Please help!! Thank you!

    I just made these but not sure they turned out right? I realize I’m using gelatin, but are they suppose to be just like jello texture wise? Yours look like firmer “gummy bears”. Mine literally look like, feel, and giggle like jello :-/

    OMG using Kombucha is a WONDERFUL idea! Thanks for sparking some excitment in me for making some gummies. I have a lot of joint problems and eating good gelatin like the one you purchase is very important to me! Thanks for posting your recipe. Do you think using a local company that sells good kombucha would work just as well? They don’t use any extra flavorings or preservatives or anything so I figure it should…

    This recipe is TERRIBLE. I use Wellness Mama’s recipes on a daily basis, but she really screwed this one up; 1/2 cup of gelatin is WAY too much, it produces a thick chunky almost purely gelatin glob that’s in no way fruit flavored or pour able. I don’t know what mistake was made in writing this formula, but it needs to be reformulated because I just wasted alot of gelatin and honey and pure fruit juice :/

    Regarding the magnesium Body butter recipe…..is it possible to substitute Magnesium citrate powder for the magnesium flakes, since I have it on hand? If so, what proportion? Thank you.? I have it on hand
