Fulvic and Humic Minerals or Acids plus Soil Based Probiotics for digestive and immune support
Wellness Mama » Blog » Health » How I Take Fulvic & Humic Minerals

I’ve written about the many benefits of humic minerals and fulvic acids and how they can dramatically impact health and I’ve gotten a lot of questions about how to practically incorporate these substances.

To recap, these substances can improve digestion, cell function, energy levels and even brain function. When combined with soil based probiotics, there is some compelling research that they can help improve gut health and autoimmune disease.

Fulvic/Humic Mineral Sources

There are a couple good sources that I’ve found and have personally tried: Probiotics and Black Mineral Powder (use the code “wellnessmama” for 50% off). You may have noticed that I used the Black mineral powder in my homemade mascara because it provided the best results I’ve found, but it is also incredible as a health supplement!

Both of these options have a wide variety of soil based probiotics alone with fulvic and humic minerals. I’ve noticed great results from both, and I’d caution to start slowly with either one, as I noticed a mild detox effect when I introduced each one into my diet.

Since they help the assimilation of food, I’ve experimented with taking them before meals and in the morning, but also noticed a benefit from taking them at night and letting them “rest” in my digestive system while I slept. Optimal timing will probably vary by person so experiment and see what you respond best to.

Water Quality

There is some emerging evidence that water quality is drastically important when taking these types of minerals and probiotics since they don’t react well with chlorine and *might* create a harmful substance when combined with chlorinated water.

The evidence is still shaky at best, but I use filtered water with the chlorine removed just in case. We currently use a Berkey filter to remove chlorine from drinking water, but are in the process of switching to a whole-house filter (that we’ve saved for years to get) since it will remove all chlorine in water entering into our home.

What I Take

Currently, I am in the final stages of working to resolve leaky gut and get my autoimmune disease into remission. Under the care of my doctor, I hope to soon wean off my thyroid medication, and blood tests are showing that this may soon be possible.

To make sure I’m supporting my body during this time, I’m using both forms of fulvic/humic minerals and soil based probiotics. If I had to choose one, the Black mineral powder is less expensive per month (at the doses I’m taking) and easier to give to my children. Right now, my husband and I take:

  • 1 scoop of black mineral powder in the morning before breakfast for the energy and nutrient assimilation (remember to use the code “wellnessmama” for 50% off if you order it)
  • 2 Probiotics at night before bed to assist in beneficial gut bacteria formation while I sleep

I started slowly and worked up to these doses. I started with half a scoop of the powder and half a capsule of the probiotics. Both are very potent and even with those I noticed some brain fog and headache the first couple of days (a common symptom of a detox effect).

My children take these minerals and probiotics too. I started them with 1/4 scoop of mineral powder and 1/4 capsule and worked them up to 1/2 scoop of mineral powder a day and 1 probiotic capsule.

Have you ever taken fulvic or humic minerals? How did you respond to them?

Ankylosing spondylitis autoimmune disorder-is there a way to solve this?

Have you been tested for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome? It’s often a comorbid condition. Just found out my husband and I both have it, as do our 2 children. There’s a wonderful natural treatment called the Cusack Polysaccharide protocol. It’s giving us our lives back. Highly recommended, even if you don’t have EDS, I’d still give it a shot. Best of Luck!!

I never have heard of that & will happily research the things you mentioned.

The link for the black mineral powder is not working anymore. I can find it on Amazon, but the discount will not apply there. When I go to their home page and try to order nothing comes up. Do you have a new link for them? I noticed the same thing on the mascara recipe.
    Thank you!

    Hi Katie,

I am pregnant and my doctor has me on Fulvic/Humic. Did you take it the throughout your entire pregnancy? Did you have any side effects?

    Thanks for all the information!

    Hi Katie,
I am currently taking Body Biotics soil based probiotic because it’s more economical than Prescript-Assist. Have you heard of Body Biotic? Do you think Is it a good product? I’d appreciate your input?

    Hi Katie,

I am so thankful for your blog and have found many wonderful products via this site. I would like to ask

1.) If you are able to link a post (if you have one) that deals strictly with probiotics
    and
2.) What is it about Prescript-Assist that you like? I am on the brink of ordering this but have come across some unsettling information about the use of homeostatic soil organisms and my lack of knowledge on whether these are a part of natural human flora. I know of some people with compromised immune systems that have difficulty with this brand but have also heard some wonderful things.

I know there is no one size fits all but I trust your judgment and would like to know how this product has fared for you and others you know and whether or not it is safe. Thank you so much.

    Hi Katie,
Firstly I wanted to say that I Love your site and loving reading all your information, so thank you for creating a wonderful informative site. I also am Hypothyroid, I don’t appear to have the Thyroid Antibodies but I do have a family history of Hypothyroid. For the past 5 years I have been on a mission to try and heal my thyroid naturally as all doctors I have seen say its not possible!! I am wondering if you can give me a bit more insight as to what you do and for how long etc. I am aware all of our bodies are different and what might work for you might not work for me but I am just trying to get a better basic understanding of what you do or have done that you have found successful or you saw improvement when you did it or took it. I know sometimes I get confused with all the information out there with what works and doesn’t and what you should eat or not to the point not I am not sure if I should eat activated nuts, quinoa or gluten free oats?? Sometimes when you do too much reading you have information overload and then get confused as to what to do!! Thats why I really like your site as it appears you are on a journey as well, and its a bit of trial and error to find out what is working and what is not I know I haven’t been able to find a Doctor like yours that seems to work with you on your journey, I live in Adelaide, South Australia and although I do see a more natural Doctor and she does do a lot more testing than most I still don’t find her helpful with suggestions of different things I could be doing to help me with my journey. Also did you ever use diatomaceous earth?, my son has parasites and they are taking some of his nutrients and just wondering how you found this product?? Would really appreciate to hear back from you. Thanks Mandy

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

We do use diatomaceous earth as well (here’s how) but I like this because it balances it out. I use my autoimmune protocol, but that may not be as helpful to you if you if yours isn’t autoimmune related. The things that seem to be universally helpful are: more sleep, getting outside sunlight each day, and more vegetables. From there, it seems like everyone is on a journey to see if iodine is good or bad for them, if cruciferous veggies help or hurt them, if they need more selenium or more magnesium. I’d recommend keeping a journal of food, sleep, stress and symptoms and trying to nail down things that make a change for you.

So you take both the Prescript assist probiotics as well as the BioKult probiotics?

  8. Bre Avatar

For a GAPS kiddo…. would using BioKult (for probiotic) and black powder (for fulvic/humic) be a good combination?

  9. Stephanie Avatar

    Nice and informative article!

I’m not sure the two products you recommend are comparable in terms of fulvic/humic acid content. It appears the Prescript-Assist probiotic is MAINLY a probiotic and only contains a small amount of fulvic/humic acids solely to provide prebiotics to the bacteria. The Black Mineral Powder contains more fulvic/humic acids, and while it does contain probiotics, it contains less # of strains than the Prescript-Assist.

So the Prescript-Assist seems better if you’re looking for a strong probiotic, whereas if you’re looking to up your fulvic/humic acid dosage, the Black Mineral Powder seems ideal.

What do you think Kate? This is based on some research I did, but want to check if you came to the same conclusion as well.

    Hi Katie,

I was just wondering if you are using prescript assist to heal leaky gut. You mentioned you’re almost healed.

Or did you use more in terms of a leaky gut protocol (I just signed up to your list so perhaps I missed that).

Also, is all the fulvic acid you need in the black minerals and prescript assist? Or is that something you take separately.

    Thanks!

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

The black minerals are more for fulvic/humic acids and the prescript assist is more probiotic. I notice the biggest benefit when using them together and they are both helpful for gut health.

    Hi Katie,

Is the black mineral powder all you are using to remineralize or are you taking other minerals separately in addition? I haven’t looked at it but wonder if it contains heavy metals too–

Also, what is your protocol for leaky gut?

    Thanks!

    1. Kika Avatar

I’d like to know if other minerals/vitamins are a necessity also. If I use the black mp but don’t have the minerals to attach to it, is it really doing any good?

  12. Lauren Avatar

How do you give these to your kids? Capsules, in water, smoothies? thanks.

  13. liliya Avatar

How young of kids do you think this is safe to give to and in what amount? I have a 13month son and if i could would love to give him some as well as trying myself. Thanks.

I have ordered blackMp concentrate from Foods for athletes but am having a problem with getting my order and no one responds to my phone messages or emails. I ordered from them since you recommended them and we ordered if you have had problems with them.

  14. Rebecca Avatar

Are these probiotics different from Biokult probiotics you’ve used previously? Is one better than the other?

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

We used Bio Kult on Gaps and still use them occasionally (especially for the kids) but these are native probiotics and prebiotics and I’ve found they are more effective for me

  15. Breann Avatar

Thank you for the info on giving kids these minerals/probiotics.

Do you have an updated routine you do with kiddos… or where could I find your most up to date supplement recommendations for children? Thank you!

Katie, I was wondering what your most recent protocol is while trying to put your hashimotos into remission ( I realize everyone is different and not all need the same interventions) I see dr. Christianson and just started the wp thyroid and hope to put this into remission as well. Are these supplements things you have researched, or things he has suggested? I would love to find out more!

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

I need to write the details soon but I’ve relaxed my diet from the strict autoimmune protocol I was on and still seem to be getting good results after that initial 60 days. I take things he has suggested and others I’ve researched and run by him… Hope you get yours in remission as well!

      1. Amy Avatar

Hi, I struggle with hashimotos too. The blk powder helped within days for joint pain and muscle recovery. I have switched between so many thyroid meds and wp and now have balance with tirasent which is crazy priced but pure levothyroxine. I have a sensitivity to fillers that rx meds contain so pure levothyroxine made a big difference. The blk water is a mid morning drink for me, I take the thyroid med first thing with water in the morning and wasn’t sure if the mineral water would interfere?

  17. Arlene Avatar

Do you think this is ok while nursing? Do I mix the black powder in water?

Do you still take a different probiotic when taking the prescript assist?

I have well water. We do have a filtration/softener system. Do you think this would be safe or would you boil the water first?

Would this be safe to start during pregnancy if it causes a mild detox? I am 11 weeks.
    Thanks!

I’m around 20 weeks and am looking for a good mineral and/or probiotic supplement and would love to know the same thing. (Will ask my midwife as well).
