You’ve probably heard horror stories of 3-foot tapeworms camping out in someone’s gut. Most parasites though are so small they can only be seen with a microscope! Millions (if not billions!) of people around the world have parasites. Many don’t even know it.

Intestinal Parasites

There’s a very good chance you have yeast overgrowth or intestinal worms. The CDC estimates over 60 million in the US are chronically infected with toxoplasmosis. And at least 14% of us have been exposed to toxocariasis. And that’s just in a developed country.

Countries with poor sanitation and poor hygiene due to economic factors are even more likely to have issues. The World Health Organization estimates over 700,000 people worldwide die each year from parasites and vector-borne pathogens. The prevalence of parasitic diseases is likely much higher than estimates.

Our bodies are literally crawling with hundreds of strains of yeasts and bacteria. The digestive tract alone holds more than three pounds of bacteria. We need them in the right balance for good digestion and nutrient absorption in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are the good guys and have a huge impact on our health.

Out of Balance

When the good bacteria get out of balance, problems begin. There are many risk factors including diet, certain medications, stress, contact with infected sources, and others. Our bodies also host naturally occurring yeasts. When we have an overgrowth this can have a big impact on health (and not in a good way). While vaginal yeast infections may sound familiar, they’re usually a sign of a much larger infection.

The most disturbing invaders to our bodies, in my opinion, are parasites. Sadly, most people carry these guys around too. Studies have found that most people, especially those with chronic diseases and cancer, are host to at least one kind of parasite.

Parasites can range from tiny ones only seen by a microscope to long tapeworms (several feet long). A tapeworm can live for 30+ years and parasite infections can last for years!

Different Types of Parasites

We don’t really want to think about the creepy crawlies in our gastrointestinal tract. But it’s important to know what we’re dealing with here. With the high prevalence of intestinal parasites, there are a whole range of different types. Common intestinal parasites include:

  • Whipworms – Nearly 800 million worldwide have whipworms. They hang out in the large intestine and are a type of helminth infection. It’s transmitted by fecal contaminated soil and contaminated food grown in that soil. Lighter infections don’t even have symptoms.
  • Tapeworm infection – Tapeworms can cause intestinal parasitic infections but they can also travel to other parts of the body. Young tapeworms form cysts and can live in other organs, including the brain, liver, spine, and heart.
  • Roundworms – The larvae can infect various body tissues. Ascariasis is also a type of roundworm. Mature worms like living in the gastrointestinal tract, blood, and lymphatic system.
  • Pinworms – These are the most common intestinal worm infection in the US. The females lay thousands of eggs while their host is asleep. This can cause intense itching on the anus and restless sleep. The microscopic eggs are most commonly spread between young children. It’s important to regularly wash all sheets, pajamas, and underwear. You’ll also want to treat the whole family if one of you has it.
  • Hookworm Infection – Along with Ascaris, hookworms are a helminth parasite. They live in the small intestine and attach to the intestinal wall and cause blood loss. Many infected people don’t have symptoms.
  • Entamoeba histolytica – The CDC estimates only 10-20% of people with E. Histolytica show symptoms. It’s more common in tropical regions or you can pick it up by visiting one. Those living in unsanitary conditions or men in homosexual relationships are also at risk.
  • Protozoan – Protozoa infections, like giardia and giardia lamblia, are microscopic. They infect the blood and can be transmitted from one person to another through mosquito or bug bites. They can also infect the human intestinal tract and be transmitted through feces.
  • Cryptosporidium – Aka crypto, this parasite is one of the most common waterborne diseases in the US. You can get it from the ingestion of contaminated food or water, including while swimming. It can cause symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Not everyone who is infected has symptoms, but they can still pass it to others for about 2 months after infection. Those with a weakened immune system are most at risk for serious symptoms.

How Do We Get Parasites?

Parasites can enter the body in a variety of ways, depending on the type. You can get it through contact with contaminated soil, eating raw or undercooked meats, or even from bug bites. If you’re traveling to a developing country or drink contaminated water you’re also at risk. Because some parasites are microscopic and live on surfaces for several weeks, they’re easy to spread.

Treating parasites is a 3 step process. First, we have to kill the invaders, then they (and the toxins they create) need to be flushed from the body. Finally, we need to support the body in healing and regenerating itself.

How to Tell If You Have Parasites

There are many symptoms directly or indirectly associated with parasites. If you have several of these symptoms, there’s a good chance you have an infestation. Remember that some parasites don’t even cause symptoms though!

Symptoms of Parasites

  • Lowered immune system and constant illness
  • Rectal itching, especially at night
  • Digestive problems like bloating, cramps, constipation, diarrhea, or nausea
  • Bloating and gas
  • Tired all the time
  • Floaters or spots in the eyes
  • Trouble sleeping and teeth grinding at night
  • Anemia
  • Asthma
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Psoriasis or eczema
  • Extreme hunger
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Plus many more…

If left untreated, Candida, yeast, and parasite overgrowth have been linked to a plethora of chronic conditions. Yeast and Parasites are often found in people with the following conditions:

  • Infertility or permanent fertility damage
  • Cancer
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Malnutrition
  • Vitamin Deficiencies
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome
  • Kidney Stones
  • Chron’s Disease
  • Skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Digestive problems of all kinds

Conventional Parasite Treatments

Typically your healthcare provider will order a stool test. Stool samples that don’t contain live, visible parasites are considered negative. PCR tests though can detect dead or dormant parasites. If someone tests positive they can be prescribed anti-parasitic drugs.

Natural Remedies for Intestinal Parasites

The good news is there are effective natural treatments to help the body kill and remove parasites. If you suspect that you have an issue, you might consider some of the treatments below.

Change What You Eat

Since parasites thrive in a weakened immune system, eating healthy is one of our best defenses. Lots of sugar depresses our immune system and causes microbe imbalances. I recommend getting rid of all processed sugar and even reducing natural sugars. Sources like honey and high-sugar fruits can still cause problems during an active infection.

Some natural stevia is ok once in a while, but avoid anything that gives the body a sugar source and feeds yeast or parasites. Also, consider skipping dairy to give your body a boost. Eating healthy whole foods is a must!

Sweat it Out

As your body kills off parasites, their toxic by-products must be removed from the body. Some of these (like heavy metals) are best removed through the sweat glands. Work up a sweat by exercising, using the sauna, or even working in the garden! Taking cayenne is another good way to kick up the heat.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

This naturally occurring substance has an amazing ability to kill parasites and parasite eggs. It’s naturally high in the silica we need for hair, skin, and nail growth. Plus it has trace minerals and can help restore body tissue and improve digestion.

I start with 1 tsp a day in 8 ounces of water and work up to 1-2 Tablespoons a day. Be sure to only use food-grade DE. Taking DE may also cause a Herxheimer reaction (see more below).

Apple Cider Vinegar

What can’t apple cider vinegar do? It may help lower blood sugar, improves digestion, and kills harmful pathogens. It helps the body detox for clearer skin and a healthier body. While it won’t kill parasites on its own, it strengthens the body’s defenses against pathogens.

ACV is strong on its own so be sure to take it in water. I start with 1 teaspoon up to 3 times a day, 30 minutes before a meal. You can increase up to a Tablespoon at a time.

Probiotics

Probiotics help restore the helpful gut bacteria that are wiped out by parasites (or antibiotics or hormonal birth control). We need these good bugs for a healthy gut. I include lots of fermented foods in my diet, and I also like this probiotic supplement. Just don’t take them within an hour of ACV or diatomaceous earth though!

Herbs and Spices

Garlic is a powerhouse when it comes to pathogens and parasites. You can include minced raw garlic cloves liberally in your diet.

Cinnamon is another natural remedy for parasites. You can use ½ teaspoon of high-quality cinnamon powder in water, kefir, or coconut milk yogurt up to three times a day.

Anti-parasitic essential oils include clove, eucalyptus, fennel, and white camphor. These are great to diffuse or can be diluted and used topically. Consult with a qualified aromatherapist before using any essential oils internally.

Herbs commonly used for parasites include andrographis and a blend of clove, wormwood, and black walnut hull. You can also use digestion and immune boosting herbs to strengthen your body’s natural defenses. Be sure to do your research before trying any new herbal regimen!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an excellent antioxidant and great for immune support. It’s also helpful for parasite infections. If you have parasite symptoms you can use 5 grams of vitamin C per day spread out in 2-3 doses. Too much can cause loose stools so you can adjust the dose down if needed.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a natural, mild anti-fungal, and very nourishing to the body. If you’re not already using it in your cooking, it also tastes great blended into coffee or tea. You can add several tablespoons a day for healthy fats and to support healthy bowel movements as you’re eliminating toxins. Personally, I don’t use coconut oil as much anymore and mainly use olive oil.

Herxheimer’s Reaction

Sometimes getting rid of parasites can be uncomfortable. Herxheimer’s reaction, named after the German doctor who discovered it, is basically a die-off reaction. Trying to treat parasites and infections quickly or with potent remedies can cause a Herx reaction.

It’s best to be on an anti-yeast/parasite diet for several weeks before even starting supplements, This can help minimize reactions. You can start with small doses of apple cider vinegar and diatomaceous earth. Work your way up to help keep the die-off symptoms at bay.

You may even find that you “catch a cold” a week or so after starting to treat your yeast and parasite symptoms. This is actually a mild Herxheimer reaction. Backing down supplements and drinking more water should help it pass quickly.

Other Important Notes on Intestinal Parasites

Removing parasites is a difficult job for your body. It’s important to support your body during the process. Regular exercise, a good diet, adequate sleep, and limiting exposure to toxins all help!

Epsom salt baths are another excellent way to help detox through the skin. I like to use 1/2 cup of Epsom salts in hot bath water or try one of these detox bath recipes.

Be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out die-off toxins faster. And of course, plenty of sleep gives the body enough time to regenerate and heal. I aim for at least 9 hours a night. It’s also very important to skip the sugar and refined carbs as these make the process much slower. Raw vegetables and healthy fiber sources help keep your energy levels up and clean the body faster.

I just came across your post and was wondering how long I should do this DE cleanse. I am experiencing severe stomach pains and cramps after traveling and feel maybe parasites might be the reason!

Do you take the DE while nursing? Is it safe to do so? I have read conflicting information on it on the internet. Also, would you give the DE to a two year old?

Hi, Looking to start my toddler on DE as stool samples confirm parasite infection. He also has Graves Disease. Wondering if you need to take DE separately from other supplements? I saw to take it on an empty stomach, but wasn’t sure if it hindered the uptake of vitamins. Between his supplements and keeping his reactionary hypoglycemia in check, an empty stomach feels rare!

Thank you for all your help. I searched google for a while, then thought, “oh duh- just look at wellness mama, I am SURE she has an article on this.” a blessing from God you are. Thank you Katie!!!!!

I need help! I’m 53 and have a physical condition that is very confusing to me. What I describe happens to me every few months. I have fibromyalgia and depression also, I’ll try to describe it as thoroughly as possible. I came home after work on Thursday morning and went to sleep right away. I was feeling really horrible and my stomach hurt a lot. I was freezing with the air conditioner on. When I covered up, I was sweating to death and felt like I was 150 degrees. I’m very light-headed and miserable the whole time. I can’t eat or drink when this is happening, and I don’t get out of bed. I’m weak, disoriented, and nauseous. I have horrific nightmares and I have a really bad taste in my mouth. I’ve had this on and off for at least 15 years and still can’t figure out what the cause is. I have IBS also and am wondering if it’s related. If I forget to be aware of the IBS, I get constipated. When I remember, I try to clear myself out. This happened a week ago. I end up having diarrhea then (3 days this time). I’m confused about if it’s Candida, parasites, or something similar? I’m just picking at possibilities. I described this to my doctor once and he gave me Amitiza for IBS. I also have depression and get really depressed after I am able to get up. I feel so alone in all of this. It scares me. It’s also hard to not miss work. As I mentioned, this is an ongoing problem that happens every few months with no other explanation. I’m really concerned about it. It’s also nearly impossible to explain to an employer. When I describe it, it almost sounds like food poisoning and/or the flue but without a fever. I’ve just had the worst episode ever. I was finally able to eat a little hot foot earlier today (Saturday) and my stomach doesn’t hurt so much. But I’m still light headed and just want to cry. I need to find answers for what’s going on. I need a solution because I can’t put up with this. It’s very upsetting because I don’t have an answer. Can anyone help?

So, once you rid your system of these nasty bugs/worms, what does your diet consist of to prevent the return of ’em? New to all this, so any info would be greatly appreciated!

I started using the DE 3 days ago to get rid of bacteria and possible parasites. After having and healing from a right foot fracture, I started swimming at the gym 5 days a week, doing 12-16 laps. After the 3rd week I started getting really sore muscles, I thought it was from the swimming, so I stopped. 5 days later it kept getting worse to the point that one day I couldn’t even walk, I went to ER they did Xrays, and the ER doctor said nothing showed, but that I probably had a rare decease related to myalgia or arthritis. He sent me home with steroids and pain killers. Couldn’t get an appointment to see my PD until two months later, with unbearable pain to the point that I couldn’t even turn to either side of the bed let alone out of bed, or sit on a toilet. I finally went to see PD (primary doctor) and she said it was fibromyalgia based on the sympthoms. Gave me lyrica and sent me home. However asked me to do a blood panel for arthritis. The panel showed much internal inflamation, so she referred to a specialist. 3 months later still have not been able to see a specialist for arthritis, have an appt. in July. Now just trying a holistic approach on my own. Also other things have appeared on my skin, such as what looks like a ringworm on my right breast. And also what appears to be linchen sclerosis on my female part and anus. If anyone out there knows what I can try for this skin conditions I would appreciate feedback. So now I am taking 2 tbsp of coconut oil, 1 tbs ACV and DE. I have faith and believe all of your posts.

I would like to share my recipe for DE drink. I boil 1/2 stick of Ceylon cinnamon on low heat for 15min. I let cool ad 1tsp of DE mix well with a spoon and ad a couple of ice cubes. It tastes like horchata a little on the lite side but delicious…..

    1. Cathy Avatar

I don’t know what is ailing you or if DE can help with all of it, but I, too, have faith in the powers of DE to purge our bodies of things that shouldn’t be there. I speak with experience that it CAN free you of parasites. I take a small dose every day now, just as a preventative measure. Wishing you well, and hoping you feel better.

    Hello Peoples

Currently I am doing 1 Tea spoon of Diatomaceous Earth every morning on empty tummy with water, as I am doing a cleanse to rid myself of parasites (hopefully)!
I was wondering if I can actually use the DE in an Enema to directly hit the source of where I believe I may have some.
Today I have a migraine, I am not sure if this is die-off, but I’ve only been on it 2 days!!!
I am going to build myself up to taking a coffee enema , then a liver and gall bladder enema later on, but want to rid of critters first.
After years of inflammation and allergies and then one day not being able pooping and still not with out aid of a colon sigmoid flush or enema, I decided to do an ACV enema to stimulate the intestines to move things along and to help make the intestines Alkaline, and I unleashed the beast…
of course this was upsetting and horrific….but there they were 2 of them..
So now my everyday and night is devoted to removing these Invaders!!
I really want to Do an DE colon flush, followed by Himalayan Seal Salt and filtered warm water enema to flush out….
I will report back on DE enema unless I hear its a no no.
I am doing a nightly probiotic 20 billion strain dairy free so I have the good stuff in me!
But all this enema business is really heavy on my body.
I work in a health food store, but will not use Black Walnut husk…
anyone done a DE enema please share your experience with us / me!
    Thank you all

Where are your sources? There were many claims being made here (such as the use of diatomaceous earth) that have no evidence to support the claims. I have done my own alternate research and have still not found any CREDIBLE proof of diatomaceous earth as being any kind of stomach remedy at all. As a matter of fact, there is not any credible proof of any of the remedies listed as working for intestinal parasites. What it sounds like to me is that we have a case here of people reading something that has no factual proof, just hearsay, and regurgitating it to the masses. Perhaps there is financial gain in it but morally, I find it wrong to give out information that is not PROVEN to work through multiple scientific experiments, each of which being able to be replicated for validity. People, please do not believe everything you read without first looking into (or even conducting your own) experiments that show proof of the claims they make. (i.e. the hypothesis is either supported or not).

    1. C Avatar

Science has very little interest in conducting studies on whether diatomaceous earth helps with stomach issues or not because it is readily available, cheap and cannot be patented. The money is in pharmaceuticals that can be sold. My brother is an entomologist, and he told me that the prescription medications for parasites are no longer effective, as they were developed decades ago and the parasites have developed resistance. That they were not effective I needed no one to tell me.

I have conducted my own scientific study on diatomaceous earth on my family and myself, and I can sing its praises. It DOES eliminate parasites when so many other remedies failed. With your need for scientific studies and validation, I’m surprised to find you on a blog for homemade remedies, unless you are just here to harass. Personally, I place high value on the tried and true methods and personal experiences of my fellow mothers.

      1. Judi Avatar

Amen to that! I’m proof too. Had I not tried the tried and true methods and read the personal experiences of others I’d still be loaded with parasites. Proof?? I saw it! I started taking Diatomaceous Earth and Oil of Oregano, Black Walnut Oil, and Wormwood. The gas and bloating disppeared. Better yet, I felt a huge change! I felt 20-30 years younger physically. I’m 64.

The best part… it’s all natural and no chemicals!

If a child swallowed a quarter and the doctor told you to check his stools until it passed…. Sadly, a surface look isn’t going to be enough. Eggs passing through the stool will look like sesame seeds. If you see that, and haven’t eaten any sesame seeds, you know you are flushing out parasitic eggs. By the time worms pass through the stool, particularly if having been flushed out by DE (which shreds them,) they are going to be dried up versions of what they would look like inside. Don’t expect to see full sized worms. When they are dried, they are much harder to detect, particularly because they won’t usually be sitting on the surface. If you take a couple of skewers or something and pull apart a piece of feces, if you are flushing out parasites, it will look like a bunch of hair is inside. Sorry, but you asked! 🙂

    Hi, thanks for this post.
    I have 2 questions.
First, I am vegan (except honey) and gluten free and very nearly grain free but I do consume lots of fruit. Is it necessary to back off from fruit as you mention? I understand the rationale but, to be honest, this would be pretty difficult for me.
Also, you mentioned not to mix diatomaceous earth with kombucha. Why not? And how long should I wait between consuming one and then the other?
Oh and third, I guess, is it best to take diatomaceous earth alone? I’ve been mixing it in my smoothies and soups. Does this kill its effectiveness?
    Thanks for your help.

I don’t have time to read through all of the comments here, but no one ever seems to address the question I have – which is, how do you know when you’ve expelled a parasite? I know it’s gross but someone has got to come clean and tell us how to know. I’ve been using DE (diatomaceous earth) for about 3 weeks, although at much less dose than what I’ve seen some sites tell you to use, by my naturopath suggested to start with 1/4 tsp in 1/2 cup water, followed by a full 8 oz (1 cup) of water immediately, then wait at least 1 hour before ingesting anything else. So I do this early in the morning. Now I’ve increased (per his instructions) up slowly from 1/4 tsp daily to 1/2 and now at 1 tsp daily. I hope to be at 1 TBSP daily in about 2 more weeks.

But I keep watching my stools looking for something but I don’t know what I’m looking for or how to know if I’ve seen it!! Someone has GOT to answer this question for those like me who have no clue. I forgot to ask my naturopath when I was there in April for my last visit, and now he’s out of town for a week, so I can’t ask til he returns.

Can anyone tell me the answer? Thanks!

I did a tumeric and ginger parasite cleanse for the heck of it and ended up in the E.R. with 125 bpm and the feeling of hot pepper running through my veins. I struggled to survive my heart going wild for days and night and still trying to recover. Be careful when loading up on ginger. It is SERIOUS medicine. Now I’m trying to find a natural doctor who could tell me how to cleanse from ginger overdose. There needs to be warnings with the recipes put out on the internet!

Unfortunately, it’s of very limited use. Many stool samples come back negative, when in fact a person does have parasites. It’s very hard to detect them in just a stool sample.

I will find where I read this remedy and post the source.

I read a while back to give a nightly garlic enema for four or five nights in a row. Do not miss a night!

At first I did not believe this remedy.

Finally after trying everything I gave the nightly enemas to my two.

    OMG it worked!

It may have been prescribed in the book Prescription For Nutritional Healing. I used to have that book. Every mom should have a copy of that book in the home.

    Garlic is a God send!

I wanted to add that CASTOR OIL is a natural treatment for both intestinal parasites and intestinal yeast. Castor oil doesn’t just flush the parasites from the intestines, it actually kills them. (Presciption anti-worm meds only paralyze them, not kill.)

I can vouch from personal experience that it works for both issues. It’s also helpful to flush the lymphatic system. It has to be actual castor oil, not petroleum based substitutes, like mineral oil.

    1. Bethann Avatar

I have read a lot about using castor oil internally. I’ve been battling crohns disease and although not having any issues, I’ve been fighting candida from too many antibiotics. I’ve used different natural remedies, so far oil of oregano works the best for me, but I only have a small intestine now. How much castor oil do you use when treating intestinal issues? Ive heard no more than 1-2 tblspn a day? Id like to add it back into my diet as well as DE. Thanks!

      1. Catherine Avatar

For lymphatic cleansing purposes, I’ve used a teaspoon a day in the morning before eating for no longer than a week. It can be repeated, but a break is needed in between treatments. For parasites, it’s a teaspoon a day for several days, then 2 teaspoons a day for a few more, then 3 teaspoons (1 tablespoon) for several days. It works out to about a week, just higher dosages. All of that will be different, if you only have a small intestine, but I’m not sure how it should be altered so that you don’t overload yourself.
