I’ve written about many natural beauty ideas before, but oil cleansing may be one of the simplest. It’s one of the most effective natural beauty tips I’ve found for healthy, clearer skin. Here’s how to add it to your skincare routine and why it can work so well!

I admit, I was skeptical before I first tried this oil-cleansing method. My skin is naturally oily and I wasn’t sure it would work for me. I also had very acne-prone skin when I was younger, and was afraid that a method like this would bring back the acne… I was wrong!

What Is Oil Cleansing?

It may sound crazy, but the idea of using natural oils to gently cleanse the skin makes a lot of sense. The basic idea is to use natural oils in a specific combination to cleanse and naturally balance the skin’s natural oils. This produces more nourished and moisturized skin than detergent-based face wash.

The basic concept of oil cleansers is using oil to massage and cleanse the skin. Like dissolves like and the carrier oils help dissolve the impurities stuck in pores. Warm water then opens the pores allowing the grime and sebum to be easily removed.

Fans of the OCM claim it can help with oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, and whiteheads. The types of oil you choose depend on your skin type.

Natural Makeup Remover

Many makeup products have oil in them and oil cleansing can help remove these too. Use it to remove foundation powder, mascara, and even eye makeup! Here are more DIY makeup remover ideas.

Does the Oil Cleansing Method Work?

This is the part I’m most excited to share! Even in the third trimester of pregnancy, when my skin usually goes a little hormone-crazy, I had ZERO breakouts! I used oil cleansing for several months to help avoid blemishes and remove makeup.

When I first started using oil cleansing, I had an adjustment period where my skin got worse for about a week. Most resources I’ve seen suggest this is a detox reaction as impurities are pulled from the skin. This is definitely what it seemed to be for me. After that, my skin gradually improved and by 3-4 weeks of using only oil cleansing, I had no excess oil, no dryness, and no blackheads.

I asked several friends and family members who now use the oil cleansing method how it’s worked for them, and they seemed to have the same results. Some even noted that the combination of oil cleansing and taking gelatin daily has been the best anti-aging treatment!

Oil Cleansing Ingredients

Want to try oil cleansing and see the results for yourself? All you need are some natural oils and a clean, damp washcloth!

The most common oils used are castor oil and olive oil, though you can use any natural oil. Castor oil is naturally astringent, so it helps pull impurities from the skin. This makes it ideal for oily or combination skin (and even dry skin in lesser amounts). While I use castor oil packs to help detox, it can be too harsh if it’s used undiluted as an oil cleanser.

You’ll mix the castor oil with another carrier oil (or several) that match your skin type. My other favorite oil to use is olive oil, though sunflower, safflower, or even coconut oil can work.

Which Oils Work Best for Oil Cleansing?

Some oils, like rosehip oil and castor oil, are more astringent (drying) than others. Others like olive oil can be too heavy for naturally oily skin. Here are some oil cleansing options and how they work:

Base Oils

These are oils to use in larger amounts along with the castor oil.

  • Avocado oil – Good for combination, dry, or mature skin.
  • Grapeseed oil – Lightweight oil that’s good for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Sunflower oil – A lighter oil that’s good for combination or oily skin.
  • Sweet almond oil – Good for oily, sensitive, or combination skin types.
  • Coconut oil – This works really well for some and not so well for others. It can be too drying and pore-clogging, especially for acne. Some people love it in skincare products though.
  • Olive oil – My favorite oil to use. Great for mature or dry skin, but I found it worked well for my slightly oilier skin too. Be sure to get real olive oil though since most of what’s in the store is mixed with other, cheaper oils.

Specialty Carrier Oils

These work great to add a little more customization to your OCM blend. They’re a more concentrated source of skin-loving nutrients. You can add just a little bit of these to your oil blend for big benefits.

  • Rosehip oil This astringent oil is great for more oily skin types but in smaller amounts it’s also a good anti-aging oil. Full of vitamins A and C to help with scar tissue, blemishes, and wrinkles.
  • Argan oil – Packed with vitamins A and E, antioxidants, and linoleic acid. It’s emollient, helps protect against free radical damage, is anti-aging and moisturizing.
  • Jojoba oil – Similar to skin’s sebum, jojoba has vitamins E and B as well as minerals. It won’t clog pores and it’s great for all skin types.
  • Essential oils – While these aren’t a carrier oil, they deserve a mention. They offer additional skin benefits to help with anti-aging, inflammation, and blemishes. Some of my favorites are lavender, tea tree, frankincense, sweet orange, and cedarwood. Just add a drop or two to your OCM blend (but be sure to avoid the eyes!).

Want to Buy It?: Don’t want to buy the oils yourself and DIY it? This handmade oil cleansing blend smells divine and works well for oil cleansing.

Oil Cleansing Blends

If you’re new to oil cleansing, it may take a few tries to figure out what oil blend works best for you. I used a mix of 3/4 olive oil and 1/4 castor or hazelnut oil and it’s perfect for my skin. You can also try the following:

  • Oily Skin: 1/3 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 2/3 sunflower, grapeseed, or sweet almond oil.
  • Combination Skin: 1/4 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 3/4 olive, sweet almond, sunflower, or other oil
  • Dry Skin: All nourishing oils like avocado or olive oil, or a very small amount of castor/hazelnut oil added to the nourishing oils.

Start with the suggested amounts above for your skin type and adjust if needed. When I started, I mixed up very small batches until I figured out the right blend for me.

I’ve also found that even pure coconut oil can work well once the skin has adjusted, though it can be drying on some skin types. One friend uses a half and half mix of coconut oil and olive oil that she blends in a blender to create a cream, and this works perfectly for her.

Oil Cleansing Tutorial

Now that you know which oils to use, here’s how to do the OCM!

  1. Pour a quarter-sized amount of the oil blend into your hand and massage onto your dry skin. Use smooth circular strokes to massage it in for 1-2 minutes. If you’re wearing makeup no need to wash it off first!
  2. Optional: Leave the oil on for up to 10 minutes to deeply clean skin cells and pores.
  3. Soak a clean washcloth in very hot water and place the damp cloth over your face for a minute or so. This creates steam to remove any oils and skin impurities. Repeat if needed.
  4. Use the washcloth to gently remove any remaining oil. There will still be a thin layer of oil on the skin and this is beneficial.
  5. Most people don’t need a moisturizer after the adjustment period. However, if you still have dry skin, try reducing the castor oil in your blend and use a little lotion to moisturize.

Oil Cleansing Method FAQs

Oil Cleansing With Acne

It’s normal for it to take a week or so for the skin to adjust. You may even see more oily skin or breakouts during this time as impurities leave the skin. If you can, resist the urge to use harsh soaps or facial cleansers as it will make the adjustment period take longer.

You can also speed up the detox process by using a clay face mask once or twice a week.

The Oils Aren’t Working For me

Even if you don’t have acne-prone skin you may still have an adjustment period. And you’ll likely have to experiment with different oils to find your perfect oil ratio. If your skin is too dry afterward then reduce the castor oil (or rosehip oil if using). If it’s way too greasy, try a lighter-weight oil or increase the castor oil used.

If you find your skin really doesn’t like this after a month (and you’ve already tried different oils) then the OCM may not be a good option for your skin.

Cleaning Up Afterward

If you do this in the shower, make sure to clean your shower floor regularly so it doesn’t get slippery! Some readers have also asked how to clean the washcloth afterward. I do a separate load of laundry for them and wash on hot. You can also follow the wash up with a vinegar rinse before drying.

So, I have been using this method on and off for about a month or so. I haven’t noticed any real changes yet, but I love how soft my skin feels in the morning! The only problem I have been experiencing is that I know there is still makeup on my face after I’m done laying the hot wash cloth on my face. Afterwards, I always have to go through and rub my foundation off. I really want to use this method, but the wash cloth is just too rough on my face. Any suggestions? I was thinking I might not be using a hot enough wet wash cloth…

I know this is an older post, but I just started oil cleansing a little over a week ago. I do love it, did find that I need less castor oil. I have a few questions though.

How would avacado oil be as the base?
What would be a good essential oil for sensitive skin, just to add a little scent?(if possible)
Can I mix rosewater and lemon juice for a ‘toner’? Too drying?
Any suggestions to lighten the dark spots left behind by the pimples over the years?

I just found your site and absolutely LOVE it- Thanks for all the great info!

Can you do the OCM without any castor oil? I’m using grape seed oil with tamanu oil right now but only for a couple days so im not sure yet how it will work out 🙂

Question: I purchased some Jamaican Black Castor Oil for my hair: will this work as well, or will it have to be ‘regualr’ castor oil???
I bought quite a bit for my hair, for growth and thickness and health, and would like another use as well….

Black castor oil is made black by roasting the castor beans and then boiling them and pressing the oils out…something I wouldn’t recommend putting on your skin, besides the scalp where it’s intended. Cold pressed oils are generally better and safer for the skin. Plus, since it’s meant for the hair, I would leave it in the hair category and not try to make it a skin product…like, I wouldn’t use conditioner on my skin because its very comedogenic. Even though some people swear by it for shaving, it breaks out my legs. Cold pressed castor oil is pale yellow and what should be used on the skin, IMO. The bottle i bought is 12oz or so, and i believe it was $7. it’s not expensive. I also mix it in with my shampoo to see if it helps with my flaky scalp. However, it’s your skin, so experiment if you want to. It might be magic on your skin, but if a client asked me if it was cool to use it, I’d tell them no. Hope this helps!

Day one of oil cleansing. Looking forward to seeing what kind of results I have. I started out simple with the 1 tsp. castor oil to 2 tsp. sunflower oil ratio. I have combination skin. Skin currently feels fabulous.

This is the worst advice ever. I followed this and ended up with severe cystic acne that I never even had as a teenager. I used olive oil, tea tree oil, and castor oil for the month of September. By October I began experiencing the worst breakout of my life. I have been trying to clear my acne since then. I had one cystic hot spot that lasted over two months. I have to cover my face with gauze at night because my acne will pop on my pillows. Sometimes, the acne popped just from me talking and moving my face during eating. Don’t try this at all. It has been over three months and I’m still experiencing breakouts. Before I started, I had clear skin. Now, I can barely look in the mirror. I have scars that cover the whole area of both cheeks. And random zits on my forehead, jawline, chin…as well as blackheads covering my whole face. Do not listen to this advice.

I by no means am trying to dismiss any of your concerns, but tea tree oil does not work for everyone I myself found it to be irritating when I’ve tried to use it on my entire face in a cleanser. I can use it lightly in trouble spots, but that’s about it. I have combination skin. Maybe the tea tree oil is too harsh for your skin and not necessarily the oil method. She even states above that you have to find the balance for your own skin and maybe you just didn’t find yours. Again, I’m not trying to get you riled up, I’m just making a suggestion.

I have read that olive oil is a problem for a lot of people. Many have experienced what you are with. However, I’ve had steady acne since I was 12 years old and nothing has helped me. Not proactiv, not benzoyl peroxide. Not clean eating. I’ve tried everything. I’ve been oil cleansing with olive oil for just over two weeks now and can really tell that it working. All the little bumps I could feel under my skin just waiting to erupt are gone. No more new white heads, which I would generally get every day, and my husband, without knowing my routine change, has been gushing about how clear and bright my skin looks. When he asked what I was doing, he said, “I think you’ve stumbled on a miracle,” and told me to keep doing it. It’s been a skin saver for me. I am very sorry this happened to you, but I don’t know what would possess you to use tea tree oil on your face like that, especially since you said you had clear skin before. Tea tree oil can be effective for acne, but it must be super diluted and I don’t think anyone would recommend using it for oil cleansing. It’s too risky. Like I said, I just use straight olive oil, then follow up with an acv toner. Best thing I’ve ever done for my horrible skin. It’s good advice, you just have to be carefully and not use the wrong oil. Tea tree oil is the wrong oil for this.

    3. terry Avatar

So sorry this did not work for you. Tea tree oil is an irritant for some people, although it has wonderful results for others. I would definitely steer clear of it if you are having a reaction. Maybe just the other two oils would be best. Good luck. Finding the right combination of oils and amounts would definitely be worth it, though, because the chemical treatments for skin breakouts quite often also exaggerate the problem and keep skin irritated.

Can you mix up a batch of this and keep it in a container to come back to? Or do you have to freshly mix it every day?

You can pre-mix. Once you find your ratio, you can mix much larger amounts. I have a 12 ounce pre-mixed jar in my shower

Today is my 8th day of doing the oil cleanse, and all week my skin has been very lovely and soft. However, today I have gotten several white head pustule like things, but I was thinking that I was already through the adjustment period. It seems rather late for it to be just starting. Am I doing something wrong? I’ve been doing it once a day (at night) with 3 parts olive oil to 1 part castor oil. The rest of my skin is silky soft and amazing, so I really want this to work! Also, I assume I shouldn’t pop the pustules right?

Unsustainable are 80% of the deforestation is caused by MEAT, DAIRY, EGG farms. If people were worried about it they’d go vegan.

  10. Stella Avatar

Wow! I just learned about OCM today and am so fascinated by it. Can’t wait to try it out! Question, what facial products do you use on days when you’re not doing OCM? E.g. makeup remover, moisturizer, and face wash. Thanks!

  11. Yaya Avatar

I just hear about this method for the first time today and I am looking forward to giving it a try now that I am off from school. I do have one question though, how many times a day do you use the oil method? And if you are acne prone like me, do you still use spot treatments, or do you discontinue that as well?

  12. Lindsay Avatar

Is this something that should be done morning and night, or is once a day enough?

    1. Ravenna Black Avatar
      Ravenna Black

This is what Katie told Tiffany (who was using it twice a day) in the comments above:
“Personally, I”d try only once per day… It could be that you are drawing out chemicals from the skin from using other cleansers for so long and that doing it twice a day is causing this to happen too quickly. You could also try upping the castor oil even more (50/50 ratio) for a while to see if that helps…”

So I think it would be best to do once a day.

  13. Virginie Avatar

“Castor oil should never be used undiluted on the skin” – can you explain? I had been using pure Castor oil on my dry hands. Or on my sons chest to increase blood circulation when they are congested.

Could you add vanilla extract or essential oils to this to make it smell good?

    1. Kasey Avatar

I think that would be a good idea! Rose essential oil has TONS of vitamin C, which brightens the skin. Tea Tree oil is good at killing bacteria and can help reduce acne breakouts caused by bacteria.

  16. Lizzie Avatar

I have been doing the oil cleansing method for about 3 months and I can’t believe I never tried it before! I mix one part castor oil and 2 parts of olive oil to which I add a few drops of Rose essential oil. My skin is amazingly clean. I use this method only once a day, and just rinse with water the rest of the time. My skin is supple, moisturized, and blemish free. I do not use any other moisturizing product on my face.

I have been using this oil cleanse for two weeks now and I love how it has balanced my skin. I’m no longer dry and oily, just even skin tone now. I was wondering though if you know of any natural option for pore reduction?

I’ve worked in skincare and cosmetics for 20 years and have access to the best of the best. I had a bio chemist that specializes in cosmetics recently tell me that the Origins brand cleansing oil was the best cleanser on the market for skin. Although I’m fifty, my skin is oily, large pores but I tried it anyway. I loved it but thought there still has to be something better. I came across your blog. Mixed my own oil and let me say I am sold! My skin is no longer oily, of course I still have pores, but they are near invisible, and I have never received so many compliments on my skin. Also, my 14 year old that has always had perfect skin recently started her period, and her entire forehead and chin broke out in severe cystic acne. Not mild, severe. Of course I turned to what I know. Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, etc.. She is not typical and does not have oily skin but extremely dry skin. Nothing worked.. I then used DR. Bonner’s soap (all oils) and it completely cleared her up but she was super dry. After I started the cleansing oil, I decided to put her on it to see if it would keep the breakouts away and help the dryness. Her skin is back to perfect like it never happened. I never would have thought with everything I’ve learned over the years that something so simple could be so amazing. Thank you so much for your wonderful blog! I’m learning all kinds of new things!
