I’ve written about many natural beauty ideas before, but oil cleansing may be one of the simplest. It’s one of the most effective natural beauty tips I’ve found for healthy, clearer skin. Here’s how to add it to your skincare routine and why it can work so well!

I admit, I was skeptical before I first tried this oil-cleansing method. My skin is naturally oily and I wasn’t sure it would work for me. I also had very acne-prone skin when I was younger, and was afraid that a method like this would bring back the acne… I was wrong!

What Is Oil Cleansing?

It may sound crazy, but the idea of using natural oils to gently cleanse the skin makes a lot of sense. The basic idea is to use natural oils in a specific combination to cleanse and naturally balance the skin’s natural oils. This produces more nourished and moisturized skin than detergent-based face wash.

The basic concept of oil cleansers is using oil to massage and cleanse the skin. Like dissolves like and the carrier oils help dissolve the impurities stuck in pores. Warm water then opens the pores allowing the grime and sebum to be easily removed.

Fans of the OCM claim it can help with oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, and whiteheads. The types of oil you choose depend on your skin type.

Natural Makeup Remover

Many makeup products have oil in them and oil cleansing can help remove these too. Use it to remove foundation powder, mascara, and even eye makeup! Here are more DIY makeup remover ideas.

Does the Oil Cleansing Method Work?

This is the part I’m most excited to share! Even in the third trimester of pregnancy, when my skin usually goes a little hormone-crazy, I had ZERO breakouts! I used oil cleansing for several months to help avoid blemishes and remove makeup.

When I first started using oil cleansing, I had an adjustment period where my skin got worse for about a week. Most resources I’ve seen suggest this is a detox reaction as impurities are pulled from the skin. This is definitely what it seemed to be for me. After that, my skin gradually improved and by 3-4 weeks of using only oil cleansing, I had no excess oil, no dryness, and no blackheads.

I asked several friends and family members who now use the oil cleansing method how it’s worked for them, and they seemed to have the same results. Some even noted that the combination of oil cleansing and taking gelatin daily has been the best anti-aging treatment!

Oil Cleansing Ingredients

Want to try oil cleansing and see the results for yourself? All you need are some natural oils and a clean, damp washcloth!

The most common oils used are castor oil and olive oil, though you can use any natural oil. Castor oil is naturally astringent, so it helps pull impurities from the skin. This makes it ideal for oily or combination skin (and even dry skin in lesser amounts). While I use castor oil packs to help detox, it can be too harsh if it’s used undiluted as an oil cleanser.

You’ll mix the castor oil with another carrier oil (or several) that match your skin type. My other favorite oil to use is olive oil, though sunflower, safflower, or even coconut oil can work.

Which Oils Work Best for Oil Cleansing?

Some oils, like rosehip oil and castor oil, are more astringent (drying) than others. Others like olive oil can be too heavy for naturally oily skin. Here are some oil cleansing options and how they work:

Base Oils

These are oils to use in larger amounts along with the castor oil.

  • Avocado oil – Good for combination, dry, or mature skin.
  • Grapeseed oil – Lightweight oil that’s good for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Sunflower oil – A lighter oil that’s good for combination or oily skin.
  • Sweet almond oil – Good for oily, sensitive, or combination skin types.
  • Coconut oil – This works really well for some and not so well for others. It can be too drying and pore-clogging, especially for acne. Some people love it in skincare products though.
  • Olive oil – My favorite oil to use. Great for mature or dry skin, but I found it worked well for my slightly oilier skin too. Be sure to get real olive oil though since most of what’s in the store is mixed with other, cheaper oils.

Specialty Carrier Oils

These work great to add a little more customization to your OCM blend. They’re a more concentrated source of skin-loving nutrients. You can add just a little bit of these to your oil blend for big benefits.

  • Rosehip oil This astringent oil is great for more oily skin types but in smaller amounts it’s also a good anti-aging oil. Full of vitamins A and C to help with scar tissue, blemishes, and wrinkles.
  • Argan oil – Packed with vitamins A and E, antioxidants, and linoleic acid. It’s emollient, helps protect against free radical damage, is anti-aging and moisturizing.
  • Jojoba oil – Similar to skin’s sebum, jojoba has vitamins E and B as well as minerals. It won’t clog pores and it’s great for all skin types.
  • Essential oils – While these aren’t a carrier oil, they deserve a mention. They offer additional skin benefits to help with anti-aging, inflammation, and blemishes. Some of my favorites are lavender, tea tree, frankincense, sweet orange, and cedarwood. Just add a drop or two to your OCM blend (but be sure to avoid the eyes!).

Want to Buy It?: Don’t want to buy the oils yourself and DIY it? This handmade oil cleansing blend smells divine and works well for oil cleansing.

Oil Cleansing Blends

If you’re new to oil cleansing, it may take a few tries to figure out what oil blend works best for you. I used a mix of 3/4 olive oil and 1/4 castor or hazelnut oil and it’s perfect for my skin. You can also try the following:

  • Oily Skin: 1/3 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 2/3 sunflower, grapeseed, or sweet almond oil.
  • Combination Skin: 1/4 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 3/4 olive, sweet almond, sunflower, or other oil
  • Dry Skin: All nourishing oils like avocado or olive oil, or a very small amount of castor/hazelnut oil added to the nourishing oils.

Start with the suggested amounts above for your skin type and adjust if needed. When I started, I mixed up very small batches until I figured out the right blend for me.

I’ve also found that even pure coconut oil can work well once the skin has adjusted, though it can be drying on some skin types. One friend uses a half and half mix of coconut oil and olive oil that she blends in a blender to create a cream, and this works perfectly for her.

Oil Cleansing Tutorial

Now that you know which oils to use, here’s how to do the OCM!

  1. Pour a quarter-sized amount of the oil blend into your hand and massage onto your dry skin. Use smooth circular strokes to massage it in for 1-2 minutes. If you’re wearing makeup no need to wash it off first!
  2. Optional: Leave the oil on for up to 10 minutes to deeply clean skin cells and pores.
  3. Soak a clean washcloth in very hot water and place the damp cloth over your face for a minute or so. This creates steam to remove any oils and skin impurities. Repeat if needed.
  4. Use the washcloth to gently remove any remaining oil. There will still be a thin layer of oil on the skin and this is beneficial.
  5. Most people don’t need a moisturizer after the adjustment period. However, if you still have dry skin, try reducing the castor oil in your blend and use a little lotion to moisturize.

Oil Cleansing Method FAQs

Oil Cleansing With Acne

It’s normal for it to take a week or so for the skin to adjust. You may even see more oily skin or breakouts during this time as impurities leave the skin. If you can, resist the urge to use harsh soaps or facial cleansers as it will make the adjustment period take longer.

You can also speed up the detox process by using a clay face mask once or twice a week.

The Oils Aren’t Working For me

Even if you don’t have acne-prone skin you may still have an adjustment period. And you’ll likely have to experiment with different oils to find your perfect oil ratio. If your skin is too dry afterward then reduce the castor oil (or rosehip oil if using). If it’s way too greasy, try a lighter-weight oil or increase the castor oil used.

If you find your skin really doesn’t like this after a month (and you’ve already tried different oils) then the OCM may not be a good option for your skin.

Cleaning Up Afterward

If you do this in the shower, make sure to clean your shower floor regularly so it doesn’t get slippery! Some readers have also asked how to clean the washcloth afterward. I do a separate load of laundry for them and wash on hot. You can also follow the wash up with a vinegar rinse before drying.

The Oil Cleansing Method uses natural oils like castor oil, coconut oil and olive oil and is incredible for naturally cleansing and moisturizing the skin.

I have very dry & sensitive skin. I’ve been using a 1-10 ratio of castor oil to sunflower seed oil for about 2 weeks & my skin looks worse! I am experiencing increasing red flakey itchy patches. I’ve decreased the castor oil ratio to 1/10 & am now thinking of dropping it entirely- what should I replace it with?

Is this just for the face or the whole body? It sounds like just the face.

Great article! What are your thoughts on adding essential oils such as Lavender or Tea Tree to oil blend? Thanks.

I was at my whits end, literally crying for days on straight last week and contemplating seeing a therapist for how badly this acne has ruined my life. I’m a 25 year old female who has what dermatologists keep calling “persistent acne.” I’ve had my hormones check, tried every product out in the market, tried every diet from juicing to ayurveda to acupuncture. Finally last week, I was reading these posts and noticed the castor oil and olive oil I had bought months back from whole foods and said to myself, “I’m already at my worst, I guess if i try this and it gets work, I go on accutane.” Just a quick background for the past couple months since January I’ve been seeing someone who has been extracting my pimples. Its all located along my chin, jawline and neck. Giving her credit, she has brought my acne down from cystic to pure tender whiteheads. But she was leaving me with nasty whiteheads and terrible hyper pigmentation marks that looked just as bad as having acne. I don’t even think its been a week since I threw castor oil and olive oil into a jar (didn’t even measure it and couldn’t tell you the ratio if you were to ask me right now) and I’ve been using it in the shower once every night. My super dry skin has gone to just fine skin, maybe a little dry on the pimples that have been popping, and my makeup has a great finish to it. I cant say this has made my acne disappear overnight, nor can I say its done anything for my scars, but it’s definitely changed the game as far as moisture goes and my skin is less oily throughout the day. Since it hasn’t harmed me yet, I figure why not continue and drop all the harsh, drying products I was using before. I hope to play with different oils down the line but since my face is extremely sensitive throughout the years of pain I’ve caused it, I’ve decided to take time weaning into it. I hope this helps others who have done as many research as I have just to read something on females without persistent acne at this age!

I have used this method for about a year and love it! However, I have a hard time getting my washcloths clean, they are so heavy with oil and smell icky. How do you clean your washcloths?

Hi! =) I am on vaca @ Oregon Coast and all my goodies (ingredients for homemade things) were left at home. My skin was not looking so great (tired, lackluster, little breakouts popping up and uneven skin tone), so I went to the local health food store down here and intuitively grabbed some Baking Soda and Neem Leaf powder. I added it to my beloved raw honey (I used it on occasion to cleanse face, but it never takes all mineral powder makeup off) and also a squirt of my oil blend I used for cleansing my face (grapeseed oil, tamanu, hazelnut and some random essential oils). I mixed all that together and massaged face gently for a few minutes and O.M.G. my skin was glowing and more even and felt AH-MAZING! It looked even better this morning after I woke up! Face smooth, soft, clear, and fine lines WAY softer too! BONUS! =)

You MUST try this! Your skin will L.O.V.E. you =) OH! I followed with my homemade toner made of 1/3 ACV + 2/3 green tea (used cotton pad to swipe face)

    Dear Wellness Mama,
thank you for all your wonderful posts, they are absolutely fabulous! I have made the moisturising lotion and I love it!! Just one question: the cream is too rich for my skin. It does not absorb well (as opposed to store bought lotion). I leave it on for half an hour and still its sitting on my skin, so I pass a towel to take most of it off or else it will be in my clothes. is there a way to make a lotion that’s not so rich? im afraid my skin is not absorbing it and since i’m very prone to stretch marks, I really need a good moisturiser.
    thank you!!
ps: i tried posting this on the page for lotion, but it won’t let me for some reason…

I’ve been doing that for 2 years actually and my skin looks great. I used to have such a dry skin it always needed to buy very thick creams but now my skin is not really dry anymore. I also made some dietary changes like the ones seggested on this website 🙂

I started oil cleansing about 4 months ago because my face and chest were breaking out consistently. I use Jojoba oil because read that it is good for skin prone to acne. I recently when off birth control and was really nervous I was going to have bad breakouts like I did a few years ago when I stopped it after college (it was so bad, I went back on BC just to control my acne). It’s been a month, and although my skin is not quite as clear as it was when I was oil cleansing AND on the pill, it is doing pretty good. Maybe I will try castor oil when I make my next purchase at Mountain Rose Herbs and give that a try! I have also found that mixing rosemary oil and the jojoba works great as a spot treatment!

Thanks so much for all the wonderful natural living info you share! I’ve been doing oil cleansing for a couple of weeks now and am loving it. I am wondering if anyone has experience with traveling with their oils, what containers they use, etc. Are the GoToobs relatively leak-proof? Have you used other containers that proved to be pretty reliable?

I do the OCM with 1/4 castor oil, 3/4 avocado oil, once a week, and I swear my skin has never been better.

I started the oil cleansing method about 3 months ago. I used a mix of castor oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil with a few drops of tea tree oil and vitamin E oil. I tried all different proportions of the oils over the course of 3 months, and I did noticed a marked difference in the oiliness of my skin. I would wake up in the morning and my skin would feel clean and perfect rather than oily and gross!

However, it didn’t clear up my deep, hormonal acne and I began to notice fine lines developing around my eyes. I’m only 25 and have never had lines before! I thought maybe this method just required time, but after 3 months, I had to throw in the towel and move on. Perhaps trying other kinds of oil would have given better results, but I just didn’t have the money to sink into more oils to find the right alternative. Right now, I’m back to using Dr. Bronner’s peppermint soap and my skin is doing better. Good luck to all of you!

I have very oily skin and trouble with cyst like acne on my chin, jaw and neck. I was so excited to try this method. First time I did coconut oil (cold pressed organic, not fractionated) and my face felt good for the first week. After 2 weeks I not only had cysts but my cheeks, nose and forehead were covered in red pimples. After 2 weeks I gave up it was so bad! So then I thought maybe it was the oil I used. Next tried castor oil mixed with olive oil. Same thing. I did it longer this time thinking I just needed to detoxify. I was so miserable with my face, painful cysts still there plus the red pimples everywhere. I took a picture of my face and sent it to my sister and asked her if I should keep trying it or stop? She could not believe how bad my skin looked and told me to stop immediately! I really was hoping for the results I read in all the comments. I am trying to get rid of all chemicals and my face is the last thing that I just can’t seem to find anything that works. I tried neem oil mixed with an organic cleanser but the smell is so bad and results were not good either. Has anyone had this problem and do I just need to try longer? It’s so hard to keep using it when it looks so bad!

I too had cysts , I tried everything . One day a NCP at the doctor’s office told me, “that ‘s staph”. I researched, starting putting neosporin up my nose and on the spots, along with vinegar baths and now I can put anything on my face. No more cysts for 8 years now

I’ve been doing the OCM for a week and my skin is THE worst it’s EVER been!!! Honestly, I’ve just turned 30 (today!) and now have small red pimples and rough textured skin. I didn’t have skin this bad as a teenager.

I really want this to work for me and need to know if I should quit and try to help my skin or keep going in case it’s doing this ‘purging’ I’ve read about on other sites. PLEASE HELP!! I’m using 1/3 castor oil and 2/3 sweet almond oil with about 10 drops of geranium essential oil.

It is probably a detox of your skin if you’ve used chemical products in the past. i’d try half and half castor and olive oil and stick it out for a week or so…

I used this for about 3 weeks and supplemented with tea tree oil as a spot treatment for blemishes and then trader joes tea tree face wash on days I wasn’t doing the oil cleansing. I occasionally used apple cider vinger as toner like you suggested. After 3 weeks my forehead broke out, I don’t know if it’s a rash it looks like pimples but they are not. I’m not sure what to do but I’ve stopped using the oil cleanse for now. Help!

The only thing I can think is that you could be sensitive to something in the vitamin e? Try a 1:1 ratio of castor and olive oil without the vitamin e…

Thanks for the recipe, Wellness Mama!

I’ve never had a problem with acne before (I’m 32) but I’ve started to use tinted moisturizer and some makeup recently and am getting pimples and red-tinged boils with white tips, presumably due to clogged pores. I also changed my regular face moisturizer (Avalon Lavendar) around the same time, so playing detective has been hard. Therefore I’ve been looking for natural makeup cleansers and was wondering if this can be used everyday to cleanse makeup? I don’t wear makeup everyday but I foresee that some weeks I might. Thanks in advance!
