I’ve made natural alternatives for body wash, dry shampoo, and other hair care products, but homemade shampoo was by far the toughest. After lots of (failed) experiments, I finally came up with a recipe for DIY moisturizing homemade shampoo. It uses natural ingredients and leaves my hair feeling soft and silky!

DIY Shampoo

I wanted to get away from store-bought shampoos that were full of unhealthy preservatives, synthetic chemicals, and artificial fragrances. Many commercial shampoos just aren’t that great for your hair and scalp.

I tried the “no-poo” method, which has great results for some, but did not work on me at all (and I have some terrible Christmas pictures to prove it!). If you have coarse hair that’s normal to dry, this method may be great for you! I have baby-fine more oily hair and it didn’t work for me.

If you’re not familiar with no-poo, it usually involves rubbing baking soda water onto the scalp as a shampoo alternative. Many people follow it up with an acv rinse (apple cider vinegar rinse) and maybe some coconut oil on hair ends as a conditioner. Some people find it works great, while others report an itchy scalp, hair loss, and gunky build-up in the hair follicles. Over time it can also strip the natural oils from hair.

Don’t Want to Make It?

When I’m traveling or don’t have time to make my own, I’ve used a few organic shampoos that worked really well. My faves are:

  • Wellnesse Shampoo – I co-founded this company and helped formulate the recipes. It uses ingredients that are not only non-toxic but have proven health benefits. There’s even an option for curly hair!
  • Morrocco Method Raw and Natural Organic Shampoo – this doesn’t lather like normal shampoo but it’s been amazing on my hair and has helped strengthen it over time.

A Different Homemade Shampoo

I missed the foaming aspect of shampoo (I know… the “foam” in regular shampoo is made from synthetic chemicals and detergents…).

My first time making homemade shampoo I tried plain liquid castile soap, which left me with frizzy hair and a mess of tangles. Then I tried a bunch of homemade recipes that didn’t work well at all. Finally, with the inspiration of a natural coconut milk (scented) shampoo that I love, I finally found a recipe I’m happy with and that doesn’t leave my hair tangled, oily, or both.

It works on kid’s hair too. That’s a picture of my daughter’s newly washed hair (though it isn’t tear-free, so watch the eyes!). It suds somewhat like conventional shampoo and you can customize it to your needs.

It’s such an easy natural shampoo recipe that I can’t believe it took me this long to think of it…

The secret ingredient: Coconut Milk!

What You’ll Need for Homemade Shampoo

  • Coconut milk – The coconut milk helps soften and adds natural oils. (UPDATE: a couple of readers mentioned that the canned stuff did not work well for them, but homemade coconut milk worked great… Depending on your hair type, homemade may be better for you).
  • Liquid castile Soap (like Dr. Bronners)
  • Essential Oils of choice (I’ve used peppermint, lavender, rosemary, and orange or combinations of those). Or you can skip them for an unscented version.
  • Carrier oil – If your hair is more dry you can add a hair nourishing oil. I usually use olive oil, but castor oil, avocado oil, or jojoba oil also work well. Castor oil also helps with hair growth.

Other homemade shampoos call for ingredients like raw honey, vitamin E, aloe vera gel, or glycerin. Feel free to experiment until you find what works for your hair! Another wonderful and cost-effective option is to make shampoo bars (like bar soap for your hair).

Essential Oils for Hair

Adding a few drops of essential oils adds more than just a nice scent. They can also improve scalp and hair health to help thicken hair, prevent breakage, and combat dandruff. Here are a few different options and what they do. I’ve written more extensively on essential oils for hair here.

  • Tea tree oil – Useful for dandruff and itchy scalp. Also treats head lice!
  • Rosemary – Reduces scalp itchiness and flakes, restores hair’s natural oil balance, and can help prevent split ends.
  • Lavender – Studies show it increases the number of hair follicles for better hair growth.
  • Peppermint – Increases hair growth, thickness, and length and deepens hair follicles for stronger hair.

Equipment

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients in a bottle or jar. Pump soap dispensers and even foaming dispensers work well for this. If you use a foaming dispenser you may need to add ¼ cup of distilled water.
  • Shake well to mix.
  • Shake before each use and massage through the scalp.
  • Store your shampoo in the fridge after each use.

Notes

  • If you use a foaming dispenser, it also makes a great shaving cream.
  • The shelf life of this shampoo is about one week when stored in the fridge.

Troubleshooting Tips

How well this shampoo works depends on your hair type and also your water. Some people with really hard water find it doesn’t combat the extra minerals in their water very well.

Which coconut milk you use can make a difference too. Some have noted that canned coconut milk did not work for them, but homemade did. Keep in mind that homemade coconut milk has a shorter shelf life than canned though.

If you find your hair is really greasy and unmanageable after using this, try doubling the castile soap so it’s 2 parts soap to 1 part coconut milk.

Natural Hair Conditioner

Now that you have a natural shampoo, what about conditioner? Since the coconut oil (and optional carrier oil) are already moisturizing you may not need to use any conditioner. Here are a few different options if you want to try them though!

  • A chamomile tea rinse at the end of each shower (leave in hair!) will produce smooth, silky hair and naturally lighter hair over time.
  • Some people find a 50:50 mixture of apple cider vinegar and water used as a rinse helps get hair cleaner and increases shine. You could also put it in a spray bottle for easier application.
  • This homemade conditioner recipe features hair-nourishing oils, glycerin, and essential oils.

But… Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day!

I can’t leave out one of my biggest healthy hair discoveries. Hair is happiest when you don’t wash it every day! Read this post to find out why the experts say how you wash your hair matters just as much as what you wash it with!

Ever made your own shampoo? Gone “no-poo?” How’d it go? Share below!

This homemade shampoo is all natural and has four ingredients (or less depending on hair type) that cleans hair naturally without stripping natural oils.

I just tried the no-poo method once so far. And used the ACV after. It feels really good, but I did not like the appearence of my hair that much. My hair is fine and long. I also tried on my 4 year old daughter, her hair seems fine. Is it ok for her?
My head is a little ichy today, I wonder why. I tried the method couple of days ago.
But I just made your recipe and I think I am going to try it today.
Any tips? Is it ok to use daily?

What is the cleansing agent in this? I am not sure how I feel about all the ingredients in the castille soap, so I was considering trying it with just vitamin E oil, coconut oil jojoba oil, and almond oil. I have never tried to make my own shampoo, so I wanted to see if I am leaving anything important out.

I agree, there are some questionable ingredients in Dr. Bronners but it all depends on your tolerance.
I buy straight Castile soap from new directions aromatics. I’m Canadian and use the Canadian site but I do know they have a US site as well.
I would think all of those oils would cause a problem with oily residue.
        Hope that helps some.

I love this shampoo. I tried the baking soda way and it worked for a while but after a year my hair was looking and feeling yucky. I have since been using an organic shampoo about twice a week. I then found your site and now am making your shampoo. I use Aveeno or my organic shampoo in place of the Castille though. My hair feels wonderful. I have med-length hair that is very curly.

I also use coconut oil as a leave in conditioner (I don’t use conditioner at all anymore, before I used it daily) and a raw apple cider vinegar rinse once a week.

Ok so I have been doing ALOT of research into this whole going “no-poo” idea. Can anyone tell me what the best way to transition is?

I just tried this yesterday. My hair went into a little bit of a shock, but today is fluffy and nice. I used Almond Milk, omitted Vitamin E (bc I didn’t have any), put peppermint in as essence oil, and olive oil. I like that it only takes a very little bit to wash my long thick hair-Amazing. I also like that it lathers. Thanks for posting.

I just washed my hair using this recipe. It was sudzy for about 5 seconds then nothing. I was pretty tanlged and I couldn’t get my fingers through it and it was difficult to brush out. I have fine/dry hair. I will see what it is like once it dries, but I have a feeling it doesn’t work for me, which makes me sad.

    Hey Katie,

I’m just about to try your homemade shampoo but I need to ask something about coconut milk. I bought a can today and after I opened it the milk inside was completely solid. Is that normal? I’m trying to look for some discussions about it online but can’t figure out if I can still use it/or try to heat it up and then mix it with the Bronners or….? Please, help! 🙂

I should of posted before, but I made this shampoo and loved it. I am hispanic with super thick curly coarse hair and my hair has never been better. I just ran out of my shampoo a couple of days ago and used a regular shampoo which now irritates my scalp. I was searching online for this recipe because I forgot to write it down. Also, My bottle lasted me two and half months, I modified some things and now am never going back. This was the best DIY, I have ever found that I truely loved.

Hi Shug, can you share how you preserved it to last for 2 months since the post mentions coconut milk gets spoiled after a week of opening it so i am curious to save how you save the shampoo and coconut milk. Also what did you modify as i found my hair too greasy using this? Thanks much!

I just came across this shampoo and tried it this morning. I also have baby fine (and thin) hair. I’ve been doing the no poo method for almost 2 months, and I’m still having some trouble so I thought I would try this out. My hair looks slightly less greasy, but it still has an oily look. Do you have any ideas why? Is there a transition period for this shampoo too? Thanks so much for your blog!!!

you can order it online. I found Dr B at the grocery store for about the same price. Kroger…in the natural section.

Thank you! I was already doing 1tsp of coconut milk with 1 tbsp dr bronner’s but was having to do it each use. Nice to know I can make a bigger batch and some other things to add. I like how it foams up nice.

I use wen, I have for the past 2 months and I absolutley love it! I just can’t seem to give it up. Is it that bad for you? I know its expensive but it makes my hair feel so good. I am trying to go all natural on everything and love the deoderant but I have tried everything including no poo for my hair and it seems wen is the only thing that has worked. Any suggestions?

This shampoo leaves my hair feeling really oily and I don’t have oily hair naturally. Does this get better as your hair gets used to it? I hope so! I really want to make this a permanent change! Thank you!

Just wanted to leave a note that I started using this as a facial cleanser out of desperation (everything else I’ve been using lately has been absolutely wreaking havoc on my skin) – and my face is SO happy. I moisturize post shower w/ half coconut oil, half cocoa butter and my face went from scaly/flaky/red/oily to even toned & really happy. I even seem to have mostly dodged a pre-period crazy breakout. Thank you!

I started using this and it was great, but then I started getting horrible build up on my scalp (I’m guessing from the coconut milk) and no amount of rinsing or adding more shampoo or less or doing extensive vinegar rinses would help. Have to keep trying alternative methods…

Thank you Wellness Mama for all your hard work! 🙂 I LOVE your website! I have been using this shampoo recipe (which I am so excited about) and for some reason it really makes my hair oily. My hair is not naturally oily — but right after using this the first time, it left my hair feeling stringy and oily. Does this go away after using it for some time? Note: I did not add the olive/almond oil.

I have been “no poo” for about a year now, and while I do like it, I’m wondering if I would like this a little better? How often do you wash your hair? On the no poo method I can get away with only washing 2-3 times a week…
Also, do you think there will be a transition from no poo to using this? I hated the transition from commercial to no poo, it was awful!

I may have missed this somewhere on your site, but do you know where I can get recycled bottles, tubes, and jars? I’m going to make Christmas gifts, but I don’t have a lot of containers.

I thought I would be doomed without a conditioner. I have thin hair that typically tangles etc., but I just made a point of combing it out before showering/shampooing and it’s all good!! I did have some static to deal with, but once I applied my homemade hair gloss it was manageable. My hair is much softer and less fizzy and not weighed down with the typical expensive shampoos and conditioners. I was spending $80 on a shampoo and conditioner to try and achieve what I considered manageable hair. Taaadaaaa! I have it now!

      Cheers!

Just tried this recipe. I haver really dry hair and constantly have to cake on the conditioner. Im happy to say that after using this recpie I did not need to use conditioner, and my hair is silky smooth. My hair has been color treated and permed, and it seems to work great, not sure about long term effects yet.
