Big eyes and long eyelashes are a classic feminine trait and many women have gone to great lengths (pun intended) for them. I even made my own natural eye shadow recipe to accentuate mine. Unfortunately, many treatments like eyelash extensions and growth serums can cause allergic reactions, infection, or other problems.

Never fear, there’s a natural way to encourage lash growth… all you need is a little castor oil!

Get Longer Eyelashes Naturally

Of course, there is a genetic aspect to long eyelashes, but that doesn’t mean that those without the lucky genes can’t increase their eyelash length. I have a cousin who naturally has super-long dark eyelashes that look like extensions.

My eyelashes are decently long but definitely not that dramatic. I have been experimenting with natural ways to increase my eyelash length and thickness.

There does seem to be a connection between nutrition and hair health, so if a person isn’t getting enough fat-soluble vitamins, b-vitamins, vitamin C, and collagen.

Overuse of eye products, especially long-lasting mascaras or fake lashes, can weaken lashes or lead to lash loss.

Natural Eyelash Extensions?

After publishing my homemade mascara, many people asked if there was a natural way to make fiber lash mascara or eyelash extensions. I’m yet to find a natural version of false eyelashes since most glues contain formaldehyde. Most fiber lash products also contain questionable ingredients.

What I did find, however, was a natural way to make lashes look as long as fake lashes using only natural ingredients.

This natural eyelash growth serum uses:

  • Castor oil– Natural source of omega-6 fats, proteins, and vitamins that helps encourage dramatic hair growth
  • Emu oil– “highly anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, anti-wrinkle, penetrating, a transdermal carrier, promotes skin regeneration, non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), nourishing, anti-aging and bacteriastatic.” (source)
  • Coconut oil
  • Vitamin E oil (optional)

Castor oil alone would give noticeable results, as it has been extremely helpful for lengthening and thickening my hair, but the addition of emu oil, coconut oil, and vitamin E give this serum a wider range of fatty acids and nutrients to help speed eyelash growth.

TIP: Christa of The Whole Journey recommends adding 1 drop of lavender essential oil to mascara to speed eyelash growth. I haven’t tried this yet, but it could be added to this serum for additional benefit. (Just always use caution and do your own research when using essential oils!)

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients in a small dropper bottle and swirl gently to combine.
  • To use, squeeze one drop onto your finger or a cotton swab and gently massage into lash line. I prefer to do this at night to let it work overnight before washing my face in the morning.
  • Use daily for best results.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to one year.

TIP: Also use on eyebrows to help with thinning eyebrows! This will last up to a year as long as it is kept in an air-tight container. Be careful not to add water, aloe, or other liquid ingredients that will spoil.

I would love to see before and after pictures if you have them.

Also I just wanted to caution everyone if you have never used castor oil in a product before you should test it on your skin before applying it around your eyes. Are used to work with a girl who had a rash all over her face and turned out she’s allergic to Castor oil. You would not want to find out you’re allergic after applying it around your eyes first.

Is the essential oil necessary? I haven’t begun using them yet and don’t want to until I learn a lot more..

I made this 3 months ago in a well washed mascara tube. I used equal amounts of castor oil and coconut oil, added a good squirt from a bottle of liquid Vitamin E, 1 drop each of lavender and lemon. I shake it well, then apply it every night before bed as though I am applying mascara. A tiny bit does go to the base of my lashes during application. I also apply to my eyebrows because I had a small thin spot on one in a place that I never plucked them. I am 54 and have never been a regular user of any makeup, only for special occasions. My eyelashes have grown dramatically in length, from straight sticks to curling upwards now. My lower lashes are also longer and the thin spot in my brow filled in. I have also noted my lashes and brows seem to be slightly darker than 3 months ago. I’m so glad I read your post. This really works for me, thank you. ps, as a vegetarian, I did not use the emu oil.

I’m still testing it on my eyelashes – it does seem to slow the fallout but I need a few more weeks to see.

But I do want to thank you for this recipe for my eczema!! I got a serious breakout on my hands from travel/probably gluten contamination. And for 3 weeks after my hands have been itchy and super dry despite better food at home.

I made your exact recipe and wound up throwing it on my hands overnight and it made a HUGE difference from the first time. 4 nights in, my skin is so much more healed! Now It’s just a bit dry and bumps are disappearing. No other oil alone was helping – but this must be SO nourishing.

Always love your posts. you share so much with us, thank you!

I use this recipe and love it… thank you! Do you have any recipes for an eye cream/serum for the skin? Would love to try it out if so 🙂

Hi! I am four months postpartum and I have noticed hair loss that started in my last trimester and I still ongoing (about six months now) I’ve noticed hair shedding more from my head and lashes, but mostly eyebrows. Is this very uncommon? I have been using castor oil and essential oils to help stimulate growth but hairs are visibly falling out of my brows daily. I think it’s most likely due to all the hormonal changes of pregnancy and breastfeeding…should I wait it out and think it’s normal or see a doc?

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

Some hair loss is normal post-pregnancy because of hormones and a change from the latent/resting phase of shedding during pregnancy, but if it is specifically eyebrows, especially the outer half, this can be a sign of thyroid disease (it was for me) and it might help to see a doc who could test for that, especially if it continues.

Do all the eyelash serums cause discomfort or only a few? Which one of them is more beneficial – The Natural way or Using a lash serum.. Coz i believe this would take a long time before the results actually are seen. Your suggestion would greatly help.

I am going to make and try your eyelash serum. I notice in your hair growth for men recipe you use Black Seed Oil, is there a reason it cannot be used in the eyelash formula?

    Thanks!

Hi Katie, can i use this serum for hair growth? I’m from Malaysia, I’ve read your recipe for hair growth, but nettle leaf & horsetail leaf is not available In our country. To get it from US or any other country will increase the cost. Thanks

I would love to use this recipe, but I have acne and the oil gets on my pillow and then on my face and causes me to break out. Therefore I could only use in during the day and it isn’t as effective. I’ve seen some serums that are made with peptides, but I don’t know if peptides are natural.
Do you have another recipe that would be oil free?

I have a quesiton of anyone who has tried this: have you had any reactions to the mixture? I just whipped up a batch following this recipe, but it occurs to me that perhaps I should find out if there have been any allergic or sensitivity reactions to it. Thanks in advance.

What am I doing wrong? I have been using a castor oil/evoo mix to remove mascara for about 8 years and never noticed an improvement in my lashes (if any change has taken place, I’d say it’s for worse).
Can evoo hinder the beneficial effects of CO?

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

Hm, interesting question! I am not sure. Anecdotally it sounds like it… but then your boy may just not be responsive to castor oil. You could try making this serum to see if it helps, then you would probably know for sure if it was the EVOO…

      1. Deb Avatar

Most evoo is not pure. Unless you are sure you are getting a quality product we don’t know what you are putting on your lashes

After had my daughter my eye lashes thinned out a lot. Hers off course are long and gorgeous like mine were ( I tell her she stole mine lol) I started to use a mix of about a tablespoon of castor oil about 5 drops of vitamin e oil and about a teaspoon of evoo and I apply it to my lashes every night with a mascara wand after i apply my facial/eye cream of organic shea butter and sweet almond oil and my lashes have gotten so much longer and thicker like they were 3 years ago, before she was born. Everyone is different but I don’t think olive oil would hurt your lashes. Maybe it’s your eye cream or mascara.

I would like to make this with just the castor oil and coconut oil and add some lavender. If I do it that way, omitting the emu oil, should I adjust the recipe and add 1 1/2 tsp coconut oil to make up the difference?
