I’ve been experimenting a lot with castor oil lately as a natural beauty remedy. I already use it in my oil cleansing blend each day, and I’m enjoying the results from using castor oil packs on my skin.

Years ago, a friend mentioned that she loved castor oil for hair and eyelashes. I was really skeptical because castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency that I couldn’t imagine using in hair. I did some research and found out that I had been seriously missing out on a simple and really effective traditional beauty remedy…

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Skin

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair.

In fact, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more. If you want to try it for skincare, I recommend this handcrafted castor oil cleansing blend.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products (and even damage from no-poo, due to over alkalinity). The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

“Three Times the Growth!”

How to do a castor oil treatment for natural hair and eyelash growth- simple natural remedyThere are hundreds of testimonials from people who used castor oil to increase their hair growth 3-5 times the normal rate. A friend of mine was struggling with postpartum hair loss and even once her hair loss slowed, regrowing her hair was difficult.

She measured her hair growth for a month and it grew almost half an inch. The next month, after using castor oil hair treatments twice a week, her hair had grown almost 2 inches. She tested this again the following month and noticed the same result and that her hair was dramatically thicker.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are several options for castor oil hair treatments. I prefer to make my own, but there are some pre-made options (this is a good one that I’ve tried in the past).

To make my own, I mix castor oil with another hair-healthy oil (options listed below) and herbs to help support scalp health. Unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There is a special type of castor oil called Jamaican black castor oil that has extremely good reviews. I tried it as well and it seemed to work about the same as regular castor oil on my hair, but it seems that it might provide additional benefit for those with thick or dry hair (my hair is fine/oily).

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often

I personally use this castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though I didn’t see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use

I’ve found that this treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. I keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz my roots before applying.

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.
How to use castor oil for thicker and longer hair naturally

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp and make cleanup easier. In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When I do shampoo, I use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Another less-messy way is to condition your hair before getting in the shower, massaging conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual.

Important Notes:

With any new oil, herb, or product, test a tiny amount on your inner arm to make sure you don’t have a reaction. While reactions are rare, some people will notice irritation from castor oil.

I’ve also used this in combination with my hair growth serum with great results. (I use the serum first to dampen hair, then apply the castor oil.)

It is also important to support the body nutritionally and hormonally with hair loss, as this can often be a sign of an internal problem.

BONUS TIP: I rub a tiny amount of castor oil on my eyelids at night to help eyelash growth as well. It is also part of my eyelash growth serum recipe.

Prep Time 1 min

Ingredients

  • 3 TBSP castor oil
  • 1 TBSP jojoba oil (or argan oil)

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a dark-colored dropper bottle.
  • Shake to mix.
  • Use the dropper to apply to the scalp. I part my hair right above the ear on one side, add a few drops of castor oil, part again about ½ inch from that part, add more castor oil, and so on until I’ve coated my whole scalp.
  • Then, I massage for 5 minutes to make sure entire scalp is coated and to help increase circulation.

Notes

This will make enough for 5+ uses depending on the length of your hair.
If you’re not a fan of using castor oil, some people have found coconut oil for hair to be a better fit.
For best hair health, I recommed using the above with Wellnesse Shampoo and Conditioner (from yours truly!), which I formulated to meet all of my criteria for safe, non-toxic, and naturally nourishing hair care.

My Own Results with Castor Oil…

Last year, when I was under extreme stress for a short period of time (finishing my book *ahem*), I noticed increased hair loss. My Hashimoto’s makes me more susceptible to hair loss when I’m under stress, and I was stressed about my hair loss (vicious cycle).

To combat this, I experimented with natural castor oil treatments both alone and mixed with other oils. I too noticed that my hair seemed stronger and that there was definitely less hair in my brush each day after a few weeks of castor oil treatments. Additionally, I started seeing tiny new hairs all around my hair line.

Random observation:

I split my head open when I was younger, requiring 8 staples in my scalp. Where the scar is, I have a patch of super-curly hair that falls in a perfect ringlet, even though the rest of my hair is wavy/straight. The castor oil seemed to help make this hair patch smoother, though it grew at a faster rate than the rest of my hair.

Now, I’ve made these castor oil hair treatments a regular part of my weekly routine and often do them at night, while wearing my blue blocker glasses and reading or watching a movie with my hubby.

    Hi Katie

Love, love your work! Really want to try the castor oil treatments and currently use it on my lashes at night with great success, but have read on several blogs that it has darkened people’s hair – especially eyebrows. I have very similar hair to yours in texture and colour (natural blonde) and am growing out previous highlights, so the roots appear darker because of the contrast, especially on days between hair washings. I am using your natural hair lightening tips to brighten it up so the last thing I want is for castor oil to darken the roots. Have you experienced any darkening since you started the castor oil treatments? Your hair is really great; do you have any artificial/chemical colour in your hair, or are the blonde tones all from your natural hair lightening recipes and the sun?

The castor oil did darken my eyebrows…I’m normally a number 4 (light to medium brown) but my eyebrows look black now. That’s okay with me, as my hair is dyed jet black, but it could also be due to the fact that I used Jamaican Black Castor oil (JBCO);on my eyebrows and not regular clear castor oil. I have both but I tend to use JBCO more often, as it is more potent.

So yes, the hair darkening can occur with JBCO, but I am not sure whether clear castor oil causes it.

how long did it take for your eyebrows to grow back & how did you apply it? i usually do it after i shower and just take a q-tip or a mascara wand that hasn’t been used (a trial one from sephora) and go back and forth and in circles on my eyebrows with the serum until i think I’ve rubbed it in enough.. is that what you do? and what is the name of the black jamican castor oil you use? i know theres like 50 different kinds out there and i don’t want to buy one that has a whole bunch of chemicals in it and isn’t the real one. The problem with minoxidil is you must use it indefintely…a rebound effect can occur, which means when you stop using it, your hair loss will return or even increase. Castor oil does not cause this. I use it on my scalp for shedding, my eyebrows, my lashes, eczema, and even applied the Jamaican Black Castor Oil to my newborn’s cradle cap (plus I wanted his hair to grow in thicker and darker). It cured the cradle cap and grew his hair. It made my sparse eyebrows and lashes grow much faster, thicker, and the hairs are darker.

As for my scalp, it definitely grows hair. I had postpartum shedding but castor oil mixed with a variety of essential oils, like lavender, oregano, thyme, neroli, juniper berry, peppermint, tea tree, and rosemary most certainly increase growth and scalp health. I never have any problem with shedding since using these oils…I lose maybe 30 hairs a day now and I used to have a comb full of shed hair.

I use a mix of castor oil, coconut oil (warmed/melted) & several drops of rosemary essential oil. This blend helps a lot with my thinning, dry, chemically treated hair. It’s also good in treating some dandruff on some parts of my scalp. I never really have a problem washing off the oils from my hair. Not sure if it’s because I use the Jason brand biotin shampoo.

Castor oil has always been used in my household and both my Mother and Grandma used it on their hair and both had very thick hair. I wished I had remembered to use it, however, better late than never after reading this blog it reminded me off how effective Castor Oil is. I started to use it on both my eyelashes and hair, all I can say is it works, try it and see. I found Castor OIL in my local Indian grocer shop, so buy it when I go to buy my Indian spices. I tried buying it in local pharmacies and larger chains without any luck, great to know that AMAZON stocks it thanks.

I went to a derm and the give u cortisone shots to the bald spot , the first time it worked in 4 weeks it had regrown.. Y=The second time 4 years later it didn’t work after 3 shots. So I tried gluten free. With in 1 week I felt better, by 1 month i had hair regrowing. My joint pain is gone. Im 32 I shouldn’t have any of these systems. I have alopecia areata also, the derm said it was likely ” autoimmune” after 2 sets of cortisone injections, I have some regrow th, but there are still bald spots around it. I’m paleo for over a year and in the last 2 months on the autoimmune protocol, still have bald spots, wondering what is going on…my diet is lacking all allergens, stress is the same. Sleep I cannot improve, I’ve tried it all- I will medicate 10 minutes nightly now with my new app.

I mix castor oil with rosemary essential oil and use it to massage my eyelids near my lashes gently with my clean finger. I also use it on my sparse eyebrows. I do this every night before bed. The rosemary essential oil stimulates the hair follicles thus, causes hair to grow. So far, it’s been great!

I put 2 drops of Rosemary and 2 drops of Lavender in my waterproof mascara. Not only does it fight germs, but also it now thickens and regrows lusher lashes. Win-win!

I made a mixture of jojoba, rosemary eo and lavender eo. I put it on the tail ends of my (overplucked) eyebrows and on my eylashes. One day when a motion sensor light lit me up, my eyelashes were crazy shiny! I hadn’t put it on in a few days, so it wasn’t residual. While I haven’t noticed significant hair growth, healthy hair will look better than what I had before. Quality over quantity, until the quantity is a little higher. 😉

I’ve noticed an improvement in my lashes and have only used it a few times. I should be consistent! Actually, I was using the castor oil for dry eye as I’ve read it’s good for that. Again, I need to consistently use this. Like dry brushing, I keep forgetting to use castor oil on my eyes–for dry eye AND lashes! For hair, I already have the other two ingredients. Thanks, Katie for this recipe and article. Definitely sharing!

Carrie, I don’t know when you pisted this about using castor oil on eyelashes but is it still helping them grow? How long did it take to see a difference? Also, are you seeing a difference in the bald spot on your head? That is my issue, and I wonder if this really works.

I just did 5 months of chemo & one month of radiation. Lost all hair & eye lashes. Literally after I was done with treatment I started using caster oil for both my hair & eyelashes. MY EYELASHES GREW BACK WITHIN 3 weeks and sooo much better & fuller than I have ever had them in my life. My hair is growing back faster than the average chemo patients hair, not the strangely yucky waiting for normal hair strands. Short hair still after two months, but def made a difference for what was expected, it’s looking healthy. It’s coming back really pretty, soft & strong. My docs are amazed as they haven’t seen this in any of their patients. I am positive it’s due to the castor oil. I use it every night on my eye lashes, scalp & around my eyes. It also has helped the dark circles and bags under my eyes dramatically. I don’t care if it’s greeesy or oily, it works! Easy to wash off the next day with a simple shower with soap or whatever. I recommend it to anyone. I’ve always wanted thick ,long, pretty eyelashes, I have them now..& I know my hair is on its way to the same mend.

Mestawot, she might be low in iodine. Try Lugal’s. A couple drops a week in juice or rub into the skin. The oil would not hurt her hair but how will she react? If it was my children, they would keep touching it and make a huge mess.

Mamas and Grandmas the best. I have super fine hair, and very long and lovely, so I was sceptical about slathering on thick casto oil. I made a mix of castor and olive oil, 3 to 1, and applied it it scalp through eye dropper after I misted roots with nettle water infusion. Then at end, through trial and error from before, I whisked up an egg yolk with a tbsp of fat freed organic yogurt and slathered on my hair before I began the shampoo and rinse. The oil came out so fast ! Too fast in fact. Next time only leave on for a split second before I rinse

Hello Wellsmama! I just started to use Jamaican Black Castor Oil two days ago. I have a question, I have the Mirena IUD for 1 year and 2 months. I have heard many bad opinions on this anticonceptive. Do you think that is causing me hair loss? If so, will the Jamaican Black Castor Oil works for me? Or would do you recommend me to remove Mirena because of the hormonal changes? And after removal, can I continue with the JBCO? I hope you can answer to my question because I’m kind of desperate. Thank you!!

I have used the Mirena iud for almost 10 years now…I don’t believe it is making your hair fall out. At least it never had that effect on me. I have never had a moment of problems with mine. Be careful when you hear “horror stories” about it…many tend to be slightly exaggerated.
You could however experience some hair loss after having a child. Not sure where you are with that
In any case…hope things work out for you. It won’t hurt to try it.:-)

I had a mirena and started to have many problems only 6 months after insertion. I suffered with a stroke caused from anxiety that started after having that. I am a very happy go lucky, outgoing person who has never in my life been nervous about anything. A year later after my first stroke, My anxiety got even worse, started with heart palpitations (getting up to 205bpm) and had yet another stroke. In that time I’ve seen my female doctor to get it out and she reassured me that the mirena is only progesterone and would not cause these issues. It was safe. I spent a great deal in doctors offices to get down to the bottom of what was causing me to have these issues at only 29 years old. I went to Neurologist, heart specialist, and my female doctor. All said the same thing about mirena and that I should not get it removed. 2 weeks later. I had my 3rd stroke which was the worst stroke. I lost all control of my body. Couldn’t talk, walk, speak, and couldn’t even think. Brought me to the ER which I was surrounded by a team of doctors and nurses. Had lots of blood drawn, xrays, mrI, and many other test. Doctors couldn’t believe that someone like me with perfect vitals, blood work, and overall health was having strokes. They did find that I had a hole in my heart so I had a surgery to have that corrected. While thinking that was the problem, I kept the iud in. Lo and behold, Still having severe anxiety, heart palpatations up to 200 bpm, and mood swing out of this world. I finally stopped listening to all these doctors telling me that it wasn’t this iud device causing me problems and got the iud out. I am going on a year after getting it out and I could not be happier. Haven’t had anymore problems with anxiety, heart palpitations, or mood swings. I’m finally back to my old self again. I would get the IUD out immediately if I were you. Maybe you would never have any issues, but after looking my issues up with the iud, looks like there are many other ladies just like myself that have had the same problems.

I had the Mirena iud in for 2 months and experienced major hair loss/shedding. I begged my doctor to remove it because the anxiety of seeing my hair falling out everyday was too stressful. It has now been 8 months since the removal and I still experience shedding but not as much as before while on the IUD. I don’t even really have a full ponytail anymore. I would never take that as birth control again.

Late on this convo but go see a doctor to check you for anemia and also see where your IUD is. My IUD was imbedded and caused severe hair loss and anemia. I only wish I found it sooner. I almost needed a blood transfusion or whatever they call it when you need iron in your blood beyond supplements. It was awful.

            September 12, 2016 at 9:11 PM

Ryan, which IUD did you have? Mirena or Paraguard? I just had the Paraguard (copper/hormone free) put it and before they did it, they checked my iron. It was a little low so they told me to take an iron supplement for a while and they would check everything again in 6 weeks. I hope I do not have any problems! It does sound awful what you went through!

Any regular shampoo for oily hair will take it out, it just won’t be entirely natural. Also, I’ve found that if I just use a small amount of the oil at night and let it absorb while I sleep, it isn’t hard to get out with a regular shampoo.

        Hi Sheila,

I too am waiting for Branch Basics to come back into stock. I have been using clay to wash my hair for the past year, but occasionally I use Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak when I feel like my scalp needs it. I don’t think my scalp has fully transitioned to natural hair care…though it’s MUCH better than it was the first few months when I started two years ago. Since I didn’t have the Branch Basics, I used the NYM Clean Freak and then my clay shampoo mixture. Overall, I think it cut through the oil well enough. I also rinsed with a small amount of ACV mixed with water (my typical conditioner). Hope that helps!

Here is a tried and true suggestion that has always worked for me over 50 years: Apply shampoo to hair BEFORE adding water and massage it in. The cleanser molecules attach better to the EXCESS oil molecules when used prior to adding water to break them down and then the water can rinse them out. This will not remove the ‘absorbed’ oil in hair and scalp that you are working to achieve with this treatment.

It’s not poisonous.what is poisonous is the castor leaf if taken in.but to be sincere its smell is going to irritate when swallowed and as such can cause vomiting.besides it has side effects that manifest differently on different people but not deadly side effects as long as u stick to the Castor oil not the plant itself
