7 Quick Takes – TGIF Edition!

I love Fridays and Fall! Fridays are great because they mean stay-at-home date night with my husband after the kids are in bed. Sometimes we watch a movie, but tonight we are going to do a puzzle together… sounds boring, but with a glass of wine, it is a great time for conversation. (I think that just made us sound like an old married couple… we also do things like scuba dive, go hiking, and take on random building/home improvement projects together..)

Fall is wonderful for so many reasons: orchards, apples, leaves changing, sleeping with the windows open, camping, hot tea, homemade soups and chili and bonfires! What’s your favorite part of Fall?

I am one of those with “in-between” hair. It isn’t quite curly but it isn’t shiny-straight either. I’ve always wanted curls, but have never had the time to curl my hair. I’ve been using a variation of the video below, and for the first time, have curls that last all day and take less than 5 minutes to do! How do you do your hair?

Are you on pinterest? I discovered it recently thanks to Jennifer, and I am now addicted. It is basically a way to visually organize sites you like and things you want to do in one place. I’ve got a board for my to-do list, things I want to make for the kids, etc.

I’m actually making this one today: a hanging baby hammock! My newborn doesn’t like her crib, but loves being in a sling, so I’m hoping this one will be perfect for her.

Warning: do not go to pinterest if you are actually trying to be productive today! It has the potential to sidetrack your day and make your to-do list longer!

If you haven’t already… check out the 2011 Primal Challenge at Mark’s Daily Apple. It is like my Wellness Challenge, but with bigger prizes! So far, he’s given away things like Vibram 5 Fingers, meat, coconut stuff, etc and there is a chance to win a whole cow!!

Magazines usually make me pretty annoyed these days. I get a subscription to a popular women’s magazine (It was one of those frequent flyer mile things) and even though it is free, I’m seriously considering canceling my subscription and having them save the paper.

Between the advice to eat Peeps candy when dieting because they are low-calorie, the (false) implication that saturated fat causes breast cancer, and the promo for a “healthy” way to lose weight that involves soy, honey and yogurt, I rarely find anything useful in the magazine.  I actually started saving pages to blog about, but was saving more than I was leaving in the magazine…

Anyone else frustrated with all the mad advice that is so commonly promoted these days? No wonder so many people have health challenges and struggle with weight, and many of them are following the conventional advice, thinking it is going to help!

Ever had one of those days? The kind where you wake up with the best intentions of getting everything on your list done and the whole house cleaned but then the baby is fussy, the toddler spills an entire jar of apple sauce on himself and every five minutes someone needs to go potty?

I had one of those days yesterday… here’s hoping I can get it all done today! icon smile 7 Quick Takes TGIF Edition!

Hi!  Just saw the sock curls, too! I’m going to try it tonight.

Love the coconut oil article. I’ve been trying to get my parents on board with primal/paleo. Dad has Parkinson’s, and I think part of it is due to long-term statin use. Getting them to get enough healthy fats is problematic, though.

    Hope today was productive.

Thanks for the Friday “pick me up” – still trying to decide if I should risk going to pintrest .. . .   I’m going to show that curling video to my daughter – she will love it.   Also thanks for the coconut butter recipe – I’m addicted and would love to make it myself.   Just last night I tried to make some “snack bars” for my half marathon training.   I mixed coconut butter, some of the Artisana coconut and cocoa butter, some chia seeds and some chopped pecans.   I spread it thin like fudge and put it in a tupperware with wax paper and then put it in the fridge.   I’m hoping it will harden and I can cut it in to little squares to eat before running.   I fear if I take it with me it will melt and get squishy!

My pet peeve about magazines is that I finally paid for a subscription to Fitness and it doesn’t arrive until about 10 days AFTER it is in the grocery store.   Shouldn’t subscribers get it first???   I like their exercise articles but I agree with you that it is so frustrating how CW still permeates so many of the articles!

    Hi Wellness Mama,

What a great idea for curls!  Your hair is beautiful!  Thank you for website.  I am loving all of the information.

I work at a gym and we are only allowed to read fitness-related materials at work.  I am constantly reading books.  I’ve read The Paleo Solution about 4 times now!  On days that I forget my books, or just don’t feel like reading them again, I skim through the “health” magazines to find articles I disagree with.

Just this week, I skimmed a Woman’s Health magazine and was pleasantly surprised!  There was an article about foods that have been demonized for years, but “studies show are actually healthy”…  Included on the list of now-acceptable good foods were: beef, eggs, peanut butter, and COCONUT OIL!!  (I just about fell off my chair when I saw the coconut oil.)  I could only disagree with the peanut butter.

So, even though most of the magazines produced are filled with garbage, there is a sliver of hope!

Love the hair curls video…my first thought was that the best anti-frizz agent I’ve found has been coconut oil!

LOVE LOVE LOVE pinterest!! and LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog :) I found it through the Everyday Paleo blog and have been reading through articles all night :)

I definitely agree with you about “health” magazines having anything but healthy advice in them. My motto is if everyone in America is doing it (whether it be related to health, money, etc) I probably want to do the opposite lol

    Keep up the great posts!!

My mom used to do my hair like that when I was younger. She used more socks and it wasn’t very comfortable. I’ll have to try it again once my hair grows back out.
