As a mom, few things in life are more difficult than seeing your child suffer, and ear infections can be a very painful part of childhood for some kids.

As a child, I had recurring ear infections and several rounds of tubes. Even though I haven’t had one since I was about 5, I still vividly remember the pain of my ear infections (even more so than the pain of Strep throat and other illnesses I had).

Thankfully, my own children have largely avoided most childhood illnesses, (maybe because of our diet?) but we have had two cases of ear infections (with five kids 8 and under, I’m not complaining at all!). Even so, it is difficult to watch a little one suffer, and I completely understand the impulse to run to the doctor to get immediate relief. Unfortunately, it isn’t always that easy.

What Causes Ear Infections?

When my first son got an ear infection when he was a few months old, I took him to our family doctor for relief. Ear infections are the second most common childhood illness and they can be serious if they don’t resolve, so I wanted to be proactive. Both of my parents have hearing loss, so I wanted to be especially careful to protect his eardrums.

To my surprise, our doctor suggested warm compresses, extra nursing, a few drops of breastmilk in the ear and extra sleep for a few days before trying anything stronger. He explained that not every ear infection needs antibiotics. In fact, he said most resolve on their own with proper support and the overuse of antibiotics can actually cause bigger problems for the child (and for society) later on as bacteria become increasingly resistant to them.

In hindsight, I am so grateful for a doctor who took this approach and spent the time educating me. We moved to a new town since then, so when our other child was struck with an ear infection last year, I didn’t have that doctor’s sage advice. This time, the child wasn’t nursing so breastmilk wasn’t an option. The local doc couldn’t even get us in for a few days. I considered urgent care but decided to research and try some natural remedies for a day unless things got worse.

In researching, I found that not every ear ache is caused by an infection and that sometimes they can be a sign of teething or allergies. I also found that many times, a virus and not bacteria is to blame for the infection, so antibiotics wouldn’t be effective anyway.

Some sources I read also suggested that recurring ear infections can be a sign of a food allergy or gut imbalance. This made a lot of sense to me as I was on antibiotics constantly as a child, had many ear infections, and later found out I was intolerant to several foods.

Ear infections can be caused by swimming, something lodged in the ear, or other external factors.

When Medical Care is Needed

New guidelines from the AAP recommend a more conservative approach to ear infection treatment for doctors (source) and provide warning signs for parents. They recommend taking a child in if:

  • The child has dizziness, hearing loss or increasing pain
  • The child has a fever of over 102
  • Child experiences any redness, swelling or loss of movement around the sore ear
  • An object is lodged in the ear
  • You suspect that the eardrum has burst
  • Symptoms do not lessen within 48 hours

A “wait and see” approach is often recommended if:

  • A child over 6 months has pain in one ear and a fever of less than 102
  • A child over two years has pain in both ears and a fever of less than 102
  • The pain seems to be lessening and none of the other warning factors are present

Home Remedies for Ear Infections

For our child, we fell in the “wait and see” category, so I didn’t take him in immediately but wanted to find ways to comfort him and help his body recover quickly.

After researching many remedies (including the uncommon remedy of using urine in the ear) we settled on these natural remedies and he was pain free within 24 hours:

Important: I only felt comfortable putting these remedies on/around his ear because we were able to verify with an otoscope that his eardrum had not ruptured. I would never put anything in or around the ear if I suspected the ear drum had ruptured

Elderberry Syrup

A natural remedy I always have on hand, especially in the winter, to ward off illness. Elderberry syrup has naturally antiviral properties that may help speed recovery from ear infections and it is an easy one to get the kids to take because it is delicious!

This is how I make it at home.

Warm Compresses

I found that the pain of the ear infection could be lessened by a warm compress. We tried a hot water bottle, a rice heating pack, and a warm, wet wash cloth and both seemed to work well. He preferred the wash cloth so I added some soothing dried chamomile and rosemary to the water for an extra boost and changed the wash cloth out frequently to keep it warm.

Garlic Poultices or Oil

This seemed to be the most effective remedy, as our son fell asleep really quickly after we started this and slept through the night. He woke up feeling much better.

Garlic is a potent natural antibiotic and antiviral but it can be too harsh for a child’s skin when used alone. To remedy this, I sliced some garlic and placed the slices between four sheets of gauze (two on each side of the garlic). I sewed the edges shut (taping it would have been easier) and used a bandana tied around his head to secure it.

The gauze kept the garlic from touching his skin directly but was porous enough to let the beneficial properties of the garlic get into the ear.

We repeated this treatment the next night to be safe but he was symptom free after the first night. I’ve also heard of using onions in the same way, but I had garlic on hand so I used it.

An Amish friend swears by this remedy for more than just ear aches. If any of her children get sick, she makes similar poultices of garlic and onion and places on the feet, inside socks, during sleep. She said it hasn’t failed her yet. I’ve only tried once and it was really effective for my cold.

I also now keep garlic oil on hand for use if any of the kids start to complain of itching or pain in the ear and we’ve avoided ear infections since starting this.

Lots of Fluids and Broth

Just as with an illness or infection, it is important to keep the body hydrated and supported nutritionally. Homemade bone broth is an easy way to accomplish this.

We almost always have some broth in the fridge or on the stove, but I keep some in the freezer as well for use during illness.

Ever dealt with an ear infection naturally? What remedies did you use?

    Hi Katie,
Which of the above remedies do you think is most suited for a 15 month old toddler. My son has had a runny nose for the last three weeks and developed an ear infection too. His second ear infection in one month. He’s on antibiotics but I want to try some thing natural.

    Thank you

My 6 year old was complaining of an earache recently. Thanks to the mommypotomus site- I poured a small amount of castor oil into is ear, then massaged his ear and lymph nodes. The next morning ear wax had drained out and his ear was fine.

    Hi Katie,

Thank you for sharing your research for earaches, my son (4) also suffers ear infections and this advice will be really helpful for next time.

I have tried juicing an onion (in my juicer) and dropping a few drops of the juice into his ear as he slept and in the morning he was better. I’m not sure if that’s a coincidence or not but I will definitely try it again, also your garlic in gauze was a genius idea. You learn to be quite inventive when you want a solution fast!

    Thanks again

Katie, ironic that you posted on ear infections at this time. This past week my right ear was infected down in what they call the soft tissues. The area behind my ear was swollen, painful to the touch then spread to in front of my ear with my ear itself swelling up like a cauliflower, no ridges, red and the whole area felt like fire. My temp shot up to 103 and I could Not get it down. I’d read somewhere to heat to body temp a little apple cider vinegar and deip into the ear, allow to sit for a few seconds and drain out. It worked. The pain subsided, the fever started to dissipate. I did this twice a day for 2 days and it is all gone. Needless to say, but I’ve bought a gallon of the vinegar since it has sooo many other uses.

    1. Molly G Avatar

Lucy, that is one incredible testimony! Did you use an unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar like Bragg’s? I always have it on hand, but I would never consider it for an infection as serious as yours.

      THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!

my daughter had a bad ear infection and I was at my wits end.. A friend and mother of four called me and I told her what was happening. She recommended swedish bitter (one drop per ear). I was pretty desperate and asked where to buy (over here in germany every pharmacy sells the ready to use solution and the herbs to myo). She brought some solution over due to weekend and evening. I used it in an instant and my daughter was finally able to sleep the whole night. It’s pretty multifunctional and a part of my homeremedies stash at home. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_bitters

I needed a natural remedy several years ago when I didn’t have insurance for myself. After lots if research I decided to try a simple option. I made chamomile tea, drank it first, then used the tea bag as a warm compress. When the pain would get intense, I would use steaming water in a mug and place my ear over the cup, creating a light suction. This would soothe my pain better than any pain medicine I tried. Within two days, my very severe earache was gone. Anytime since, I use this method along with diluted lavender along the back of the ear at the first sign if trouble. I haven’t needed antibiotics once.

When I was growing up we used a piece of garlic in the ear with a bandaid to keep it from falling out. Later we found out of a new remedy that worked faster and better. Taking a few drops of onion, juice using a garlic press, leave it on ear for 3-5 min then out comes out on a tissue. If the child has fever then 99% of the time it down within half an hour. Repeat 2-3 times a day for a couple of days to make sure it’s all gone. This remedy saved some kids from getting tubes.
for fluid in the ear I recently found out that is using a few drops of rubbing alcohol in the ear a couple of times a day until it goes away. It works like magic I did it with my son and he felt such a difference he was reminding me to do it. After a few days he was all better, now whenever he feels like his ears get unclear he asks me to do it.

Thank you for this! I just took my 1 month old to the MD for an infection. My 2 year old never had one so it was all new to me. I was so disappointed she needed antibiotics at such a young age (especially after all I did to make sure I didn’t need GBS antibiotics). Good to know there are things to try if it happens again when she’s over 6 months.

Just heat olive oil and with a cotton ball soak some up and pop in ear. Problem solved every time

When we were little, we rarely went to a doctor. If we had an ear ache, they would warm something called “sweet oil” and put it in our ear and put cotton in to keep it from running out.

    1. Lucy Avatar

Diane, our family also did the sweet oil remedy. I’ve been hunting for it in the local ‘old timey’ pharmacies just to keep the small bottle on hand.

      1. Shaj Avatar

Sweet oil is available in any pharmacy here. It is about 1 dollar a bottle. I always get sweet oil, eucalyptus oil and coke syrup at the local CVS.

My husband found a great natural remedy online that uses warmed garlic and onion infused olive oil in the ear. Anytime either of our boys complain of ear pain we make a fresh batch and are always pain free within 20 mins of us putting a few drops of the warm oil in their ears. We continue to do this for atleast a week and becuz of the natural antibiotic properties of the onions and garlic, every single time when we take them to the Dr after doing this at home remedy, they do not require antibiotics. We ALWAYS make sure the ear drum is not ruptured before doing this… And always test the oil in ur own ear to make sure its not TOO warm

    1. Jenny Avatar

For Heather Armstrong – you don’t need to put the oil into your own ear. The inside of the arm, near your wrist, is a very sensitive area – You can test milk for a baby here to make sure it’s not to hot, and it’s also the place you can test your oil. I have used this for years and I learned it from my Mom. and just a FYI to test bath water to make sure it’s not to hot bend your arm and put your elbow into the water.

We’ve used tea tree oil (at the recommendation of Linda Sherman @ heritage essential oils) very successfully at least half a dozen times. We just took a tip and swabbed all around the outer part of the ear, and behind it down to the jaw line. I used it straight before I knew better on infants-10 year olds, it wasn’t a super quality oil, Now brand I think. I would definitely use a carrier oil combined with a more quality oil in the present.
    Love this.

I always use tee tree oil (melalueca) on a cotton ball and set on the opening of the ear. Then I either use oregano or basil oil heavily diluted along the jaw. Every time the infection has been gone within 48 hours! I have five children and I have success with all of them!

This remedy is not recommended for babies or young children, mainly because most parents would disagree with the whole idea. I have a 22 year old daughter who is in college and lives 3 hours away, so I could not be there for her when she got a severe earache that lasted for almost 36 hours. She called me after trying all the natural remedies she knew of: warm olive oil drops, colloidal silver drops, oregano oil capsules taken orally, etc. I couldn’t suggest anything further, so she got back online and searched for QUICK remedies because the pain and feverish ear were becoming unbearable.

She called me 15 minutes later and excitedly told me the pain and heat around her ear had TOTALLY ceased after her roommate blew CIGARETTE SMOKE in her ear! She said it was so instantaneous that they both thought they were dreaming. Sure enough, the “remedy” was listed on some homemade remedy site, and several people had given it positive feedback, so she tried it, and also gave her positive feedback. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, and I would never suggest a remedy that sounded this outlandish if I had not had previous personal experience with it.

p.s. The cigarettes had been left in their apartment after a party, so thank goodness they had some on hand, and thank goodness whoever left them had not been damaged any further by inhaling the nasty smoke into their lungs. Somewhat of a WIN/WIN situation…HA!

My son was prone to ear infections every time he got sinus congestion from the time he was 2 years old. After a few rounds of antibiotics I learned to keep him off dairy as soon as he developed the sniffles. No milk or yogurt and especially not before bedtime. That reduced the occurances of ear problems. After suffering from a long sinus infection myself, I made the mistake of drinking milk one day when I thought I was on the mend. That turned into an apocalyptic ear infection for me. The first since I was 5 years old. During the nearly 3 weeks of recovery, I researched homeopathic remedies and found out about garlic. By that time I was on a 14 day antibiotic course so it was too late for me but after that, anytime my little guy did develop ear pain I used a mixture of garlic juice and warm olive oil. I’d take a bit of the juice off the top of a jar of crushed garlic and mix it with the oil in a dish then set it in another dish of hot water. Once the oil had warmed, an eye dropper was used to put 3-4 drops in the affected ear. It works instantly Every Single Time.
The kids even ask me to do it for them because it’s so soothing. I wish I’d known about it before mine got so out of control but I won’t make that mistake again!

We use the exact same remedy. We add onion juice to the oil as well becuz onions have natural antibiotic properties

We’re you drinking raw dairy? I just realized that since we switched (over a year ago) to drinking all raw, grass fed dairy we haven’t had any ear aches or infections. And between my 6 kids we used to have 2-3 a year…

      1. Stef Avatar

I’ve been drinking raw grass fed dairy & yes, I currently have an ear infection….since Feb 22nd of this year. I’m trying essential oils with my antibiotics (which are doing nothing for it…and I’m not going back for a third round).

Thanks for this Katie! My son just recently (at age 10!) has had a sudden rash of ear infections. He now has fluid in behind the ear drums that so far we can’t get rid of (through natural or medical means). The ENT is trying other things to avoid tubes, but she has begun to talk of having to go that route. Any thoughts?

    1. Cheryl Avatar

Have you checked food allergies or sensitivities testing? My daughter got lots of fluid and ear infections before cutting out wheat. We also only do raw dairy as regular mill will build up mucus. She had allergies to those but it’s best to do IGC and IGE testing.

      1. Lynda Avatar

        Thanks Cheryl,

He used to have a fairly severe dairy allergy. We haven’t tried anything like this. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hi Lynda, try googling the eardoc. It is a battery operated machine that sits behind the ear and vibrates, the vibrations help the fluid to drain and releasing the pain. I was suffering from chronic ear infections as an adult resulting in burst eardrums on 3 different occasions. We lived in a small country town at the time and the waitlist for the ENT was 8 months, my second child was about 19 weeks, I was breastfeeding and was bed ridden for 4 days 🙁 worst pain of my life – so much worse than childbirth!!! I started researching alternatives for some relief in the meantime and stumbled onto the eardoc. It cost about $55 from the U.S. as I am in Australia. Best thing I ever did. There are heaps of testimonials to read and it was featured on the doctors to show. Good luck

It sure is Katie, thank you for finding the link ???? the Amazon reviews are a bit hit and miss. I found the instructions fine and I could feel the fluid draining away so knew when I had the eardoc in the right position, it also cleared my sinuses. It does not recommend using on infants under 1 year and only to use for about 60 seconds at a time. It is worth a try… I was desperate for a drug free solution. It worked for me ????

Chronic ear infections have been linked (Dr Andrew Weil Book Spontaneous Healing) to an imbalance in the central nervous system. The answer, an Osteopath who does cranial manipulation. Remember back in the day when a baby was born they would smack the baby’s bottom. This was done for a very good reason, to get a good first breath and activate the central nervous system properly. But many things like a fall, difficult birth can interfere with the central nervous system and an Osteopath can remedy the situation. My first visit to an Osteopath was after a fall off my horse, my left shoulder wouldn’t heal properly even after therapy. I laid on a table and the doctor began to massage my neck or at least it felt like a massage, he then did some funny movements with my arms and legs and then said ok you are DONE! and you don’t need to come back. I was super suspicious, I had driven over a 100 miles and thought perhaps I had wasted my time. Well within 30 minutes I felt what I can only describe as a current of water rushing from the bottom of my neck up over my skull. For the next 48 hours this continued and I also felt a deep ache throughout my entire body. The doctor had told me this would happen and that I should take it easy for the next few days. After a few days I felt amazing and felt “normal”. What had actually occurred is the reactivation of my central nervous system by reconnecting my skeleton, it was off slightly and that can and does interfere with healing process. Over the past 20 years I have been to my Osteopath for various illnesses, some very severe like Bell Palsy and every time the “massage” has made all the difference. In his book “Spontaneous Healing” Weil links the epidemic of child ear infections to the central nervous system out of whack. Take your kids to an Osteopath first!

Coloidial Silver is the quickest remedy we have used. Four hours away from home, walking around Ikea my 4yr old son slowly got an earache and got to the point of him just sobbing holding his ear, and notmally he handles pain like a trooper so we knew it was painful. We were in Sydney (Australia) and had no idea how to find a Doctor let alone one that we could get straight into. I then remembered reading about coloidial silver, so we looked for a chemist and bought some + some panadol just incase we had to make the 4hr trip home with him still like that. In the carpark we used it and literally in minutes he was up laughing and wanting to run around. Bith my husband and i could not beleive hpw quick it worked

I use cs also. I warm the bottle of silver in a glass of warm water 1st so it’s not cold and then directly put a couple drops in the ear. For my boys the pain is gone with in 30 minutes to an hour. I also give them 5ml orally.

      2. Cas Avatar

A few drops straight in the ear (3 would be sufficient for a little child), keep them laying with their head to the side for a few minutes. Then gentle get them to turn their head to the other side while you hold a cloth over it (for anything that comes out). Repeat on the other side if needed

I use a particular kind of silver that’s more of an ionic silver than a colloidal silver & very safe to ingest while pregnant or for babies! Believe me, I’ve had many patients on it over the years! Before putting it in the ears it is essential to make sure the eardrum is intact. It works wonders for sore throats…even the start of strep! Many people are afraid of colloidal silver b/c of the blue man featured on Oprah years ago who made his own colloidal silver. The one I use and make available to my patients is easily excreted (99+%) after 24 hours. It does its job and goes away! But as previously stated, ma’am year infections can be prevented by eliminating common food allergies. Over 90% of ear infections are viral, so it’s ok to wait and see for 3 days unless symptoms worsen. There’s also a very simple osteopathic technique that can help drain the fluid from the middle ear…
