So, in case the title didn’t give it away, today’s post is on an interesting topic, but hear me out before judging!

I get a lot of questions from people who try my homemade deodorant and have issues with rashes or odor or excessive sweat. I’ve found that magnesium spray deodorant can be a good alternative, but wanted to find a way to help those who were still having trouble.

After much experimentation, research, and help from a few brave friends, I found an unusual solution that works really well!

Detoxifying Armpits: Yes, It’s a Thing

It occurred to me as I sat researching the sebaceous glands one night with a bentonite clay face mask on that perhaps my face mask was the answer to the armpit question as well.

After all, I’d used bentonite clay to detox my hair before (and use it in my shampoo now) and in natural detox baths and it worked incredibly well… perhaps it would speed up the adjustment period to natural deodorant as well.

Why detox your armpits at all? Why not just keep using regular deodorant and avoid the whole problem? Glad you asked…

Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain a variety of chemicals and additives. It takes something unnatural to block the body’s natural ability to sweat, and the chemical list in some deodorants is impressive:

  • Aluminum– Some evidence links aluminum to cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Phthalates– Endocrine disruptors often also found in plastic that can cause hormone imbalance and even infertility (especially in men)
  • Propylene glycol– Common name: antifreeze. It is a hotly debated additive in personal care products but the Environmental Working Group reports that it carries a moderate risk of immunotoxicity and allergies
  • Formaldehyde-  A known carcinogen… guess it kills the germs though
  • Parabens- Another hormone disruptor and parabens have been found in biopsied tissue with breast cancer
  • Antibacterial Substances- I talked about these before but they are endocrine disruptors and can negatively affect the immune system

Why is this a big deal? Ever gotten sick and had a lump in your neck or armpit? That is a lymph node and they are a major part of your immune system. Putting endocrine disruption chemicals directly on top of them is a great way to screw up your hormones and suppress immune function.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and what touches our skin can easily enter our bloodstream. With skyrocketing rates of breast cancer, it would seem prudent to avoid these chemicals until further research is done.

A great advantage to doing an armpit detox, besides that it helps speed up the natural deodorant adjustment period, is that it might help pull some of these chemicals out of the skin and tissue of the armpits. This can be especially helpful after years of conventional deodorant use.How to detox your armpits- and why you should

Does Armpit Detoxification Work?

I tried it personally and had several friends who hadn’t yet made the switch to natural deodorant try it as well and then switch. Here are the results:

  • We all noticed less odor, even without wearing any deodorant afterward
  • Nobody who tried the detox noticed a rash when using the natural deodorant
  • All but one person said they noticed less sweat
  • Everyone said they would recommend it to a friend

Completely un-scientific trial but practically applicable and the results seem promising!

Instructions

  • Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bowl (do not use metal!) with a wooden or non-metal spoon until about the consistency of sour cream.
  • Spread in an even layer over the armpits and allow to sit for 5-20 minutes. I suggest starting slowly and working up to a longer period of time once you see how your body adjust. If it hurts at all, remove immediately.
  • This may cause some redness as it will increase blood flow to the area, but it will go away quickly.
  • Wash off in the shower or with a warm, wet washcloth.
  • Repeat daily or as needed until underarm odor goes away and natural deodorant is non-irritating.

Notes

I’ve found that I don’t even need the baking soda in my natural deodorant after doing this.

Additional Armpit Tricks to Try

If you are still struggling with odor or have itching or lumps in your armpits, consider dry brushing, which is said to help improve lymph circulation.

Also, make sure to drink a lot of water any time you stimulate lymph flow (dry brushing, massage, detox, etc) to help flush the body and avoid getting dehydrated.

Transitioning to Natural Deodorant

After detoxifying, keep armpits functioning properly by letting them sweat! I know this isn’t the most socially acceptable (or the most pleasant at times), but I find that I experience less sweat the longer I use a natural approach.

DIY Armpit Care

If you have some coconut oil, shea butter, and a few essential oils on hand, you can probably make your own natural deodorant! It costs a lot less than natural deodorant in the store and works just as well. I’ve been experimenting with recipes for years and perfected a few different kinds:

I make up several jars (or bars) at a time since they keep for up to a year or more. That way I always have some on hand. These are great too for teens who are just starting out on the journey!

Where to Buy Deodorant

I’ve also found my favorite brands to buy over the years (because life gets busy!). Here are our favorites:

  • Wellnesse Mineral Deodorant – Part of my personal care line, we created our natural deodorant off of my tried and true DIY recipe. We formulated it with those in mind who are sensitive to baking soda and it has rave reviews from both men and women.
  • Crunchy Betty’s Kokomo Cream – This deodorant has been a great standby for years. It smells lightly tropical and reminds me of vacation and the beach!
  • Schmidt’s (any scent, but this one is great) – goes on smooth, and slightly more affordable than other natural options

That’s it! Enjoy your new stink-free armpits!

Hi Katie! I’ve been doing this for nearly two weeks and have found it a great help. I’m wondering should it be done on clean armpits though as I’ve been doing at the end of a day (wearing natural deo only)? Thanks!

    1. Katie Wells Avatar

It can be done either way but is slightly more effective if there isn’t any residue. A quick wipe with a wet washcloth should work though!

I have been using Lume for a month and a half or so and suddenly my under arms got really red and itchy, plus there is a smell I swear I’ve never smelled before haha! Trying this to see if it helps!

    1. Tara Avatar

So glad to see your comment about Lume! I’ve used it for quite a while and finally think I can correlate it to not only a weird smell, but also swollen armpits and breasts (as in lymphatic fluid). I just started using the detox last night. Have you noticed a difference since using it?

    Hi,

I used to suffer with armpit odour for years. Just in my left armpit, i cut it one time shaving and it never went back to normal. I had tried everything from baking soda to apple cider vinegar. My friend recommended trying fresh lime i was sceptical but i thought i have nothing else to lose. So i tried it. It is amazing. I use a slice of lime under my armpits and then follow that with some
Coconut oil to complete. This was six months ago and my armpits are so fresh now. I sometimes go days without even using any lime and coconut and i don’t smell at all. Even when i sweat. Lime has really been a life saver. You should try it!

      Hey Lilian,
I’d love to try your method while waiting for the bentonite clay to ship. How long do you keep the lime slices in place? And since limes are so small, do you use multiple slices at a time, or perhaps squeeze the slices at all to ensure the juice covers your entire armpit? Afterwards, do you clean away the lime juice? Then about how much coconut oil do you use? Again, do you wipe it away, and if so, after how long? And the entire process once daily in the beginning? Sorry for so many questions, and thanks for sharing your method!

      1. Lilian Avatar

        Hi Elizabeth,

It’s okay. I normally cut my lime into 6 slices and store in the fridge. I get a fresh lime every week because if the limes are off they can irritate the skin. I use one slice daily and rub into into my armpit whilst also squeezing it to allow the juice coat my entire armpit. I do this once I’m out of the shower and let it sit for about two minutes then I rub a pea sized amount of coconut oil into my palms and rub into my armpits. Voila, All done. I only do this in the morning and it’s fine. Although sometimes if I’ve had a long day i will put some lime on BEFORE i get in the shower at night let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then wash it off in the shower and seal with coconut oil when I get out.

Hope that’s explained better and lime works for you too! I’m sure it will.

Hello! Should I wash with soap after I rinse the clay mixture off? Can I put deodorant on immediately after I get out of the shower? Thanks!

    1. Katie Wells Avatar

You don’t have to wash with soap after but it’s fine to do so. And also fine to use deodorant right after.

Can I use your detox method if nursing a 18mo old? Hoping so!! A detox is needed. Been nursing for 5.5yrs and holding off. But with quarantine— the time is now!! :))

    Hey again!

I’m about a week into this detox and I’m having a lot of red, painful bumps. I haven’t put on any deodorant and the only thing I’ve put on my armpits is this recipe. Is this normal? And when will I know I’m ready to start using Natural deodorant? Thank you!

I’m currently detoxing mine (haven’t done any masks yet but plan to tonight) my underarms have broken out SO BAD since stopping my anti-perspirant ? my sister told me the same happened to her when she quite and it eventually subsides, thankfully! Just thought I would share. Some of mine are red bumps but some are full on pimples and all over both underarms, sigh, I wish I did this years ago though

      1. Rhonda Avatar

I’m having the same issue. Did you do anything to clear up the rash and how long did it take for it to go away?

  7. Chloe Avatar

    Hi!

I was wondering about how long does this detox take until your armpits stop smelling and you can try a natural deodorant? I’m about a week in and my armpits still smell pretty bad and I have a little rash with red bumps forming. I want to switch to natural deodorant but don’t know how much longer I can go with this armpit smell so any sort of timeline for this detox would be greatly appreciated!

      1. Chloe Avatar

Thank you! So is the protocol to wait until I don’t smell any odor throughout the day while doing this detox until I start wearing natural deodorant? Or can I go ahead and wear natural deodorant?

  8. Karen Avatar

Can’t wait to try this. Shea butter makes me itch so wondering about a substitute. Thank you for all you do. You are my favorite go-to!

I’m wondering how long I can keep this in the fridge. It’s always too much for one use and sometimes I make extra and store it in the fridge so I don’t have to make more later in the week. Is this okay? I thought because of the vinegar it would be preserved, but I thought I should ask. Thank you for the very informative article.

I’m wondering the same thing. How long does this last (refrigerated or not) because it’s way too much for one use.

Fascinating article and comments. Will reread all after I post. I began, in earnest, my natural deodorant journey 3 years ago. I’m currently using Meow meow. My problem is the yellow staining on white! I thought aluminum mixed with body salts was the culprit. There is, apparently, no aluminum in these natural deodorants. Would anyone have an answer?
I also find i perspire more and my clothes take a beating…there is also lots of white residue on the clothes.

For deodorant I apply Milk of Magnesia ( pure magnesium hydroxide). Found in the laxative dept at your pharmacy or grocery store. It is liquid in a blue botlle. Use the original flavor not the ones with flavoring. It is a perfect deodorant, no smells at all. Apply on your pits after showering. It is not an antiperspirant which is good since it is not blocking the sweat which detox your body, you just don’t smell and it is very cheap in price. I have been doing this now for about 3 years and do lots of gardening work outside. I have no smell whatsoever and occasional slight dampness but no major swear. My husband uses it too and it works just as good on him. The cost of it is very minimal, so it is a win all the way!

I didn’t use this detox but another one before I started using natural deodorant…. I have used all the big brands from the store and online. I even bought a homemade one from a goat farmer at the local farmer’s market and I smell so bad and not one brand has worked. I have been trying different ones for well over a year and may be close to two years. I can’t tolerate smelling so I will go back to regular deodorant if this stops the smell even though I don’t want to.

Hi! Last time I tried natural deodorant I sweat A LOT constantly, so I switched back to regular deodorant and now with summer here I feel like I constantly have odor which is gross, so I want to try detoxing this time first. How often would you suggest to detox to begin with? And can you start using natural deodorant right away or should you wait until you’ve done all your detoxing? (And how do you know you’re done?) Also, do you have to “maintenance” detox once you’re switched over or is it just for the beginning process of switching from regular? Thanks!

    1. Lisa Avatar

I switched over to natural deodorant years ago. I never did any detox. I feel there no need to detox if my body was not reacting. But everyone is different.

Dearest Wellness Mama!! I can’t thank you enough for this! Someone posted this link in Facebook & I did this 3 weeks ago. I’ve NEVER had anything work so well for me & for so long seeing great results. I’ve always considered myself a “walking science experiment”, but this “test” has had the BEST results of anything I’ve ever done for my body!! THANK YOU!!!

    Hi!
I’ll start by saying that I love your website and recipes. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge for the purpose of a healthier, natural life.
Now, for my question: would you recommend adding bentonite clay to an every day deodorant?
    Thanks again!

I thought I read this post before and there was the option to purchase a detox “kit” so one wouldn’t have to buy a bunch of all the ingredients, just what they needed to do this. Was I dreaming?

  18. Laura Avatar

How many times did you need to do this?

I accidentally used a metal spoon so need to do it again. Oops

Hi! Been using natural deodorant for years now. Recently I’ve been noticing odor and a pinching pain in my armpit and I remembered this article. Would it be safe for baby to detox your armpits while nursing? Just wanted to be on the safe side. Thanks
