Turmeric is a wonderful spice with so many benefits. I love using it in cooking and in natural beauty recipes, but another way to get your daily dose is in a refreshing glass of lemonade! We keep this turmeric lemonade recipe on hand as a festive drink for summer barbecues, park picnics, and friends just stopping by.
Easy Turmeric Lemonade Recipe
We mostly know turmeric as a cornerstone of Indian cuisine and curry powders, mustards, and more. Unfortunately, many of the foods I love adding turmeric in, like soups, stews, and this turmeric tea recipe, don’t sound as good in hot summer weather.
This turmeric lemonade recipe is the ideal solution and now is a family favorite. I’ve been making it often for the kids so they can rehydrate while they are playing outside. It is incredibly easy to make and tastes great!
The turmeric provides gorgeous color, but its earthy taste is mostly hidden by the tang of the lemon. Personally, I like to use liquid stevia to sweeten this, though any natural sweetener would work.
Benefits of Turmeric
So why is turmeric so great?
Doctors and naturopaths often recommend turmeric as a way to help lower inflammation in the body. Thousands of studies show its benefits in promoting heart health, mental health, reducing inflammation, and ensuring balanced blood sugar. It also turmeric supports digestion and liver function and is high in beneficial antioxidants as well.
You’ll also find turmeric in many of my beauty recipes and natural health remedies thanks to its external benefits. Turmeric can improve skin, whiten teeth, and even soothe rashes when added to a poultice. For a full list of turmeric benefits and uses, see this post.
Here’s how to make this superfood lemonade:

There is a wonderful Indonesian drink called Jamu I discovered last month in Bali. Always has turmeric and citrus in it and usually coconut milk as well. Always served cold too. Was a great accompaniment to the spicy dishes there. Tons of recipes online
Does this have any health benefits or is it just for taste? It is my understanding that turmeric is fat soluble so it needs to be in a fat to be effective. Thanks for the help!
It is for taste and for its many benefits. There is definitely some debate about that when it comes to turmeric, but my reasoning is that in most cases, we are consuming fat of some kind with meals or within a short enough time that it should be absorbed.
Is all tumeric powder created equal? where do y’all purchase?
We use this kind.
I found this amazing recipe for tumeric and ginger fermented tea (using keifer grains) – love it! http://www.mindbodyoasis.com/fermented-tea/
Trim Healthy Mama has a similar, but different recipe called, “Singing Canary.” Deliscious!!
I throw turmeric root in with our green smoothies. I didn’t know about how heat, pepper and fat were critical to it’s bioavailability! I can easily add pepper and avocado to the smoothie, but heat???
You can make turmeric paste ahead and add to smoothies.
To go with the daily mid-meal fruit snack I saute some salt, cayenne, turmeric, black pepper, cumin, etc. and brown nuts and seeds in this mix. Makes a tasty and satisfying snack. I also saute turmeric with pepper or all the other spices above for cooking my morning greens and eggs in.
I love using turmeric in egg salad and deviled eggs – great summer foods!
You can add a little bit of flax oil to the mix so that there is fat which aids tumeric absorption. Flax oil is light and has a pleasant taste that doesn’t interfere much.
I love Turmeric, especially in warm milk. I’m 7 weeks pregnant, so is it safe for me to drink it? I’ve read that it has natural anti inflammatory properties. Now I know I can’t have ibuprofen and that’s a anti inflammatory. I know I should speak with my doctor but I was just wondering if you knew anything about it.
As far as I know, it is considered fine in culinary amounts while pregnant but not in large amounts. I’d definitely check with a doc.
