After a recent Facebook post where I mentioned I put some strange ingredients in my coffee, I’ve gotten a few emails asking for more details …
I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. Basically, I love coffee but my adrenals don’t always love it! Also, since I don’t eat/drink sugar or much pasteurized dairy, it can make for some pretty boring coffee … until now.

Drink the Fat…
Bonus points to anyone who just thought of Ross!
I’d always mixed coconut oil into my coffee or tea to help make sure I consume enough healthy fats, though it always floated on the top and the texture was sometimes rough (especially when I was pregnant … the texture made me so nauseous!). At the suggestion of a friend, I tried a strange twist that has become my new favorite!
Basically, I blend coconut oil and grass-fed organic unsalted butter (yes … butter) into coffee with a dash of vanilla and sometimes a drop of stevia. The blender emulsifies the coconut oil and butter so the texture is more creamy than oily and it is a delicious way to get a boost of beneficial fats. This type of healthy coffee also gives much more extended energy throughout the day without making me jittery.
This is similar to the Bulletproof® coffee recipe recommended and popularized by Dave Asprey, though Dave uses MCT oil in place of the coconut oil. Both have their benefits, but coconut oil has more immune-boosting properties while concentrated MCT oil does more for an immediate energy and brain boost.
I also tried his Bulletproof Coffee which is much smoother than regular coffee and which he claims is produced carefully to avoid the presence of mycotoxins: “Most coffee beans are processed by either leaving them in the sun and elements to wither and dry, or by pressing them and letting them ferment (spoil) to remove the outer layer of the bean. Both of these techniques are known to produce significant levels of mycotoxins as they enhance flavor. Upgraded coffee beans are mechanically processed right after picking using only clean cold water. This more expensive process is safer because it dramatically reduces harmful molds or bacteria from impacting your health.”
I’ve also used various other forms of organic coffee with great results.

Additional Notes: I take my fermented cod liver oil right before drinking this to give all the fat soluble vitamins some beneficial fats to digest with. If you aren’t regularly taking coconut oil, start with a teaspoon and work up, as too much at once might upset your stomach. Coconut oil often increases metabolism and some people notice feeling warmer or like their heart is racing if they start off too fast.
I’ve also recently started adding collagen powder for extra protein and for hair, skin, and nail support and it works wonderfully!
Do you drink coffee? Put butter in it? Too weird? Weigh in below!
I just found this article! 20 years ago, I had a friend who would mix butter in his coffee and said it was better than an energy drink. He always had energy! I’m definitely going to try this very soon ?
I’m eager to try your version of coffee! I use freshly ground Mocha Java flavor Mayorga organic coffee, 2 tbsp (no, I don’t really measure it) Nutiva organic virgin coconut oil, a slice (2 pats?) of Kerrygold butter from Costco – it doesn’t say whether it’s salted or not, 2 shakes of Frontier Co-op organic Pumpkin Pie spice mix & blend in my Ninja for 20-25 seconds. When it’s cool enough, I add a heaping tbsp of YS Eco Bee Farms raw organic honey.
I have been wanting to try bulletproof coffee but the one time I tried the store bought brand my gut didn’t like it. Is this way better as I really want to get the health and energy benefits from it 🙂 Also do you have to be doing keto to drink this? Thanks ?
I chose to try your recipe for buttered milk because you include salt. I used Costa Rican coffee in my French press and whipped it up my Ninja Blender and I’m SOLD!
I absolutely LOVE my bulletproof coffee in the morning!! I’ve been drinking it for a little over a year now. It keeps me full until lunch, and gives me the just the right amount of energy to stay focused. I can also tell a difference when I don’t drink it.
I love how soft this makes my lips feel lol
Love bulletproof coffee. I make a jar of coconut oil and butter mix with cinnamon, vanilla or other spice like ginger. I use a tablespoon when I make double espresso in my gaggia and add extra hot water, seems to work really well and the fats are emulsified in the coffee. It’s my treat mid morning. On another note, I wanted to buy you book but it does not seem to be on Kindle format.
Butter in coffee, been going on forever. Think about it granny did it and do it.. dipping toast in coffee always leaves a little butter in the coffee.. I love milk with bread or toast in it too?
Oh yeah…… coconut oil, grass-fed butter and a touch of almond extract = “butter-yum” coffee. Smiles all around. Especially on a cold New England morn.
Is it okay to use organic coffee k-cups?
what happens if I want to drink this coffee hot..? the thought of drinking coffee cold makes me gag!
thanks
I love this recipe!! My coffee is delicious now and I do feel a little more energy , I don’t include the coconut oil… I thought it was going to be too much fat but I will try it with the coconut oil ? Thanks !!
I like my coffee hot…. can you make your coffee w coconut oil added then heat it up again w/out issue?
How about with olive oil instead of butter ?
I am a grandmother of eight and this coffee recipe gives me so much energy and hours long satisfaction. I don’t use Asprey’s coffee, but I do use Kerry gold (salted) butter , organic coconut oil, organic half and half and organic cinnamon and whip it up with a hand blender and it’s delicious and I can go for hours on this. My brain feels so good.
Hi, Katie, do you change any part of this recipe for bulletproof coffee when drinking it for breakfast while fasting intermittently? Would you eliminate the collagen and/or vanilla? Thanks!
If intermittent fasting, it’s best to drink it black without anything in it…
Will this work with pre-melted butter and coconut oil? We drink espresso and the coffee amount is too small for a blender.
I love butter in my coffee and I don’t mind that it floats to the top. I’m 55 and no longer experience ANY brain fog, afternoon fatigue or short term memory issues. I also have plenty of energy throughout the day. I do sometimes eat a small breakfast of 2 grass fed eggs over light with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil before work because I am a massage therapist and have long day shifts on some days, and usually eat an early dinner when I get home as my main meal. I love the Keto lifestyle! I am finally FREE of being a slave to eating due to hunger or feeling “drained” of energy in the afternoon.
I did this a few years ago when I heard about it on a Podcast and it was delicious!! I can’t remember though if I am supposed to replace my breakfast with this or still have maybe a protein packed breakfast?
I use powdered coconut “creamer” in my coffee. It is coconut oil just powdered. It combines more easily with coffee than coconut oil, which separates and floats on top the coffee. The powdered version mixes with the coffee very well.
