Using Health Tracking to Discover Your Own Personalized Medicine

I’m no stranger to being my own health detective, but it’s always amazing to realize a missing piece of the puzzle might be a simple one. Have you ever thought about the power of health tracking?

I’m not just talking about wearing a Fitbit, either. I’m talking about food-mood-poop tracking.

Yep! This episode is going there.

Andrea Nakayama, Partner in Health

I’d like to introduce you to my friend, Andrea Nakayama. Andrea’s become a big deal in the world of functional medicine, as a nutritionist who can help chronically ill people get better when no one else can. Her clinical skills have won her the attention of many world-renowned doctors who consult with her on their own difficult cases.

More than that, Andrea trains a thousand practitioners every year in how to have the clinical success she’s had. She’s training an army of change-makers in the field of healthcare.

Her story is tragic and inspiring all at once. (You’ll see why.)

Is Health Tracking the Missing Key to Self-Care?

Andrea’s functional medicine practice (which is both in-person and virtual) helps people tune in and take charge of their own health on a deeper level. Unlike conventional medicine that starts with solving symptoms, Andrea recommends digging deep into the complex layers of habits, lifestyle, and genetics that may be paving the way for health dysfunction.

This is where health tracking is essential. Take a listen to find out why … and how … you can be your own best health advocate.

In This Episode You’ll Learn

  • the heartbreaking personal loss that led Andrea to her new life mission
  • one of the best descriptions I’ve heard of what “functional medicine” really is
  • what Andrea calls “non-negotiables” for good health … and how to discover your own
  • why poop is one of the best diagnostic tools, and what yours could tell you about your health
  • the surprising reason why health-conscious people are not immune to nutrient deficiency
  • what you can learn about your health by tracking your monthly cycle
  • Andrea’s “Yes, And” philosophy when it comes to assessing the best treatment options
  • something to look for when choosing a doctor (what it is might surprise you)
  • what to remove from your diet for good thyroid health
  • health trackers you can use to create your own personalized health plan
  • why testing your blood sugar at home is a good idea even if you aren’t diabetic
  • the best supplement and labs trackers you can use, and why this habit is so transforming
  • and more!

Today’s podcast is brought to you by Four Sigmatic. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen me mention them before. I have been using and loving and Instagramming their products for years. They have an amazing instant mushroom coffee.

I know it sounds weird, but hear me out! It’s not only the best instant coffee I’ve ever tried, it’s also pretty high up on the list of best coffee I’ve tried, period! It’s made with superfood mushrooms like Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, and Chaga mushrooms. And these mushrooms have some big health benefits, plus give you energy and mental clarity without the jitters from traditional coffee.

If you aren’t a caffeine person, they also have a variety of mushroom teas and other caffeine-free products. I love them so much that I reached out and they agreed to give a discount to my listeners. So, go to foursigmatic.com/wellnessmama and use the code “WellnessMama” to get 10% off.

This episode is sponsored by Kettle and Fire Bone Broth. If you love the benefits of bone broth but don’t love the time it takes to make and how tough it can be to find quality bones to make it, Kettle and Fire is for you! Their bone broth is a regular staple in my kitchen these days, and it was what I used to create the recipes in my new bone broth e-book (releasing later this year).

So they use only bones from 100% grass-fed pasture raised cattle that are never given hormones and antibiotics. It’s also unique because they focus on bones that are especially high in collagen, which is one of the healthiest things you can put in your body. You can find them in many Whole Foods on the west coast and you can also order online at Kettleandfire.com/mama.

  1. I listened to this episode this week and I loved it! It inspired me to start tracking my diet and my poop. Things haven’t been feeling right for me, for a while. So I need to buckle down and figure it out. Thanks so much for sharing Andrea’s story. It is amazing how she took something sad that happened in her life and made it into a way to help herself as well as others. Very beautiful, inside and out.

So I tried to download the ebook, but I’m getting an error message when I click on the link in the show notes. Could you point me in the right direction?
    Thanks again!

  2. The ebook link is not working.

  3. This podcast was very helpful. Where can I find the 25 day elimination diet? Also, the link “Free gift! Download Andrea’s “Food Mood Poop Challenge” e-book” is not working.

  4. I also can’t access the ebook… thanks!
