This week something happened that doesn’t happen often. I got mad. Not to say I don’t have bad days, but I rarely get in a pissed-off, mad-at-the-world mood. But this week I did.

Don’t get me wrong- I have days where I wish I kept my cool with my kids, or wish I stayed calm or got more done, but I don’t get truly angry very often.

I also typically try to keep my emotions in check, but today they were most definitely not and my poor husband had to bear the blunt end of my rant/venting session.

What made me mad?

The Dark Side of Blogging

Not my blog specifically (I love you guys, my readers, and I love to write) but the idea of blogging, the profession of blogging and all the things that happen behind the scenes that readers never see or hear about. The things that bloggers get sucked into and are forced to deal & compete with.

To preface, I should explain that the part that made me most angry is the perceived “selling out” of bloggers in various ways. This made me upset because I pride myself in writing ALL my own content, doing all my own research, making sure each article is super high quality and everything I ever link to, suggest or promote are products I personally use and love.

It makes me mad when I see other bloggers not extending their readers the same courtesy.

Here’s the thing…

From the outside, health bloggers often appear to be perfect human beings who cook gourmet meals three times a day, have impeccable style, washboard abs, and an incredible personality. We aren’t (at least not all of those things all the time).

Think about the pictures posted on facebook or instragram. You put your best foot forward. So do bloggers, but many of us are even more “filtered” since we are potentially exposed to and judged by thousands of people each day.

I sincerely hope that no mom ever comes to my blog and feels like she isn’t good enough because it seems like I “do it all” or “am a great mom all the time.” I assure you I’m not. I have laundry baskets full of clothes in my bedroom right now and yesterday’s clothes are still on the floor. We’ve eaten organic hotdogs three times this week because the Wellness Mama Cookbook (and dealing with Amazon) has taken over my life.

I don’t always cook three meals a day. Occasionally, I order Pete’s Paleo or from a local Japanese restaurant out of sheer convenience.

I don’t always make my own detergent and cleaning supplies. Sometimes it’s just easier (and saves time) to buy (natural) products at the store or online.

Sometimes I cry because of comments I receive on my blog or facebook (sometimes happy tears, but usually tears of sadness, hurt, or pain). I’m very much not a perfect mom. Nor a perfect human.

I blog to share things that have made my life easier or better and to hopefully help other moms, but I hope that everything I write encourages and uplifts and never makes another woman feel like she isn’t doing enough or isn’t good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way- trust me…. you are good enough. You are doing enough. You are a great mom, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way lately is that your children, your family, need you. Imperfect, wonderful, you.

Back to Blogging Though…

Certain things I’ve seen in the blogging world lately have really upset me because I felt like they crossed that line with their readers. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bloggers making money. But I do have a problem with:

  • I have a problem with bloggers making money in a non-genuine way at the expense of their readers.
  • I have a problem with incestuous back-room affiliate deals. I have a problem with “I’ll promote your product if you promote mine.”
  • I have a problem when people duplicate my blog exactly for themselves, the design, every post and picture on the site, strip out my affiliate links and add their own, then claim everything as theirs.
  • I have a problem when other sites pull every post and picture of mine to use for themselves… to get more traffic so they can charge more for ads.
  • I have a problem with people copying content (both my content and that of others), stealing ideas and writing in an unauthentic voice solely for the goal of pushing more content out to the search engines. This annoys me because it isn’t about Google. It is about you. The readers. I don’t write for Google, I write for you!
  • I have a problem with the 100+ emails I get a day from people asking me to promote their stuff to my “list” (the people who subscribe to my email newsletter)

I don’t have a “list.” I have readers. I have friends. I have you. And you are the most important part of blogging to me.

And you know what? I’m not the only one who feels this way about the dark side of blogging.

I’m extremely aware, appreciative and grateful every single day for the amazing community that has grown through Wellness Mama. It is so much bigger than me. It is a group. A sisterhood. A family of moms who quite literally have the power to change the world. I don’t take that lightly. It annoys me when I see bloggers in the industry who do.

For me, blogging is really about creating a change for our kids. It isn’t about the money (though if that happens, it is great since we have six kids to feed, clothe and put through college one day) but that isn’t the goal. It is about making a healthier future for my children so they have decades and decades of health after college and so I get to live long enough to meet and enjoy my grandchildren.

I like to think/hope that I don’t have the amazing community that has developed here because I’ve written good articles about certain topics, but because I care about you. Because I want an actual (online) relationship with you. Because I care about the future for your kids as much as for my own.

I don’t want to be a “celebrity” from blogging (as some bloggers seem to want). In fact, this would utterly terrify me and get me so far out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t know who I was anymore. My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.

Someone else could copy my writing, copy my posts, copy all my ideas, but it wouldn’t be the same because the passion isn’t there. Because the world doesn’t need another blog post about how to make lip balm or magnesium body butter (which I did invent, btw), but the world needs more passion. It needs more people who care. If that is you- I am forever grateful for you… really! If you are passionate about your own goals, your own life, your own family and their health… you are changing the world more than the bloggers you see making tons of money and looking perfect on Instagram.

Because here is the deal… at the end of the day, it isn’t about me (and I’m super glad it isn’t!). I don’t use my last name. Not because I’m ashamed of it or have something to hide, but because it isn’t important (and because I value privacy for those six small children I mentioned). And because the movement, the “wellness mama idea”, is so much bigger than me.

I’m here because I want to make a change, not become famous.

My Blogging Struggle

It takes an incredible amount of time to make Wellness Mama what it is. Researching for posts. Taking photographs. Writing. Editing. Moderating comments. Social media promotion & communication. Etc.

It costs a lot of money to keep it running. Design & development costs. Hosting. Upgraded servers when traffic grows. Premium plugins. Email service. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The list goes on.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I could implement ads with the click of a button and make much more money that would help support my family and help fund a charity I’ve wanted to start for a long time (to provide sustainable food and clean water worldwide and to help distribute leftover food from farmers markets to soup kitchens, schools and food banks), but I’ve never made the jump because I personally hate ads and feel this would be “selling out.”

I want to make sure I’m always focused on you, but sometimes I don’t know the best way to do this. I make sure I don’t use spammy tactics to try to sell you things you don’t need. I don’t white label products that I didn’t create to make money. I moderate every comment so that the community is an uplifting and healthy environment for you to learn. I prominently display my affiliate policy so that readers are aware of my quality standards, practices, and promotion requirements.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I’m very much imperfect. WellnessMama.com has grown beyond my greatest goals and expectations. The blog gets a lot of traffic and in turn makes money through some of the products and resources I recommend.

I still feel like a failure because I’m not the perfect mom or the perfect wife. I think we all do. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think any mom goes to bed feeling like she has the whole wife/mother thing under control. I know I don’t. In fact, every day, I stress because of this incredible community that I love so much. Because I don’t always look, act and behave the way a “perfect” mom should. I think we all do.

So- long story short. Thank YOU so much for reading. For putting up with my rant. For caring about your family and the future of our children and our world.

At the end of the day, I don’t give a damn about just having your email address on my list. I want you to actually adopt the healthy changes I write and email about. To put in the time. To make a lasting change for your family. To say that your family’s life has improved because of changes you made. That is what matters to me.

2014 has been a tough year in many ways. The blog has grown. A lot. But I’ve made mistakes. I promoted a course (against my intuition) for someone that wasn’t a good fit… because I was too competitive. I started promoting an essential oils company (against my better judgement) because I thought there was an opportunity to help some friends make money. I self published the original Wellness Mama Cookbook, even though I had numerous offers from traditional publishers for upfront advances. And it’s wreaked havoc on my thyroid condition.

At the same time, 2014 has been an incredibly wonderful and rewarding year and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I’ve made awesome friends who started as online friends and are now real life friends, like Heather, Genevieve, Emily, and Kelly (go check them out- they are amazing!). People like Sean, Steve & Jordan, Mary, and Christa. I finally found an amazing doctor who has helped me find answers for my thyroid struggles. And I finally finished writing my book!

My Pledge to You and a Question

So here is my pledge to you: I’m going to stop trying to be the “perfect” mom on the blog and social media. I’m going to stop stressing about answering every comment and start deleting those that don’t meet my requirements. I’m going to spend more time with family, even if that means I don’t post quite as often. I’m going to only create the most valuable, most helpful things I can and share those. I’m going to stop deleting posts because I feel like they aren’t good enough or might be met with resistance. I’m going to stop censoring my writing to meet the “squeaky clean Wellness Mama image” and let the real me shine through.

Because at the end of the day, I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

I feel inferior because I don’t look like Jennifer Aniston with the patience of June Cleaver and the culinary skills of Julia Childs. I feel imperfect because I don’t have 28 hours a day to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

In the coming weeks:

  • I’m going to be moving away from most “JV promotions” because they just don’t seem genuine to me.
  • I’m going to start creating more ebooks, courses, and products. Things that I enjoy doing and things that I wish I’d had when I started out…
  • I’m going to focus on creating more helpful and useful content for you.
  • I’m going to focus on enjoying my family and having balance and enjoying things more and stressing less.

This crazy world of blogging has led me to wrestle with several internal struggles lately, and rather than try to face them on my own, I figured I’d ask for your advice (it has never failed me before, so no pressure!).

I Want Your Opinion

1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?

4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

    Hi Katie,
Careful…you got sucked in! Easy to do these days. I too am angered and annoyed by the negativity and drive for money through the web. On the other hand there are some very authentic bloggers and businesses out there trying to change the world and doing it well! I’ve been following you on and off for a few years because I felt your authenticity, and you were ahead of me in the DIY and health movement. Focus on those people and ignore the rest. Can you delete posts that are negative? Ignore negative comments on others’ sites. If you keep on doing what you know how to do best and contribute to making this crazy world a better one, you’ll be fine.

    Hugs from up north, TG

Great post on the dark side of blogging and one I’m glad you tackled! I’ve been a follower of yours for several years now, and in the last several months I have noticed a considerable increase in “buy this product” links. Honestly I feel like I’m learning less and being directed to products more. What I love about you Katie is how I’ve learned from you. I’ve loved your down to business approach to health and family… I have a ton in common with you and your message definitely resonates. If you’re asking your readers, I’d say I personally would prefer to hear less about products, (oils, snacks, wines etc.) and more about how to do have and or make these things myself with my own two hands. It is a lost art and one huge reason why many people’s health suffers…. we’ve handed the responsibility of our food preparation, beauty product preparation, cleaning product preparations over to others and have suffered greatly. Keep doing what you do BEST and that’s teaching. I value MUCH more the knowledge I gain from you in learning HOW to do something, rather than being pointed to any product (even good ones) or to buy from someone else who’s making something I could learn how to make myself.
Keep up the good work. Stay true.

I have recently become a super fan, because I am suffering from ES, and your articles on EMF are super helpful on the topic. I have a completely unrelated much smaller blog on parties, and I know how hard it is to keep it all going. And expensive! I would not care one bit if you had ads. You deserve to be paid all you are worth. We would not expect to watch TV or listen to Pandora without commercials. Please, please do that and get paid for the millions of people you are helping. If you don’t need the money do something with that brings you joy.

    XOXO

    1. You should be compensated for what you provide to us for free.. if I have to scan over them it’s not a deal breaker. I love your content. I have been following since I became pregnant and have reached a place where I already have the real foods to make what I need or the basics to make most things I read about here and it’s phenomenal feeling because you have guided me through it all.
    2. Uncensored Katie!
    3. Whatever you think or is easier for your life at that time. A mixture is good.
    4. I always like to know why but I don’t always have time to read through so I find myself scrolling through until I find the how to section. I read the highlights of the rest. Hope this helps!

First, let me say, Wow! I fell in love with this blog post. To read the words that came directly from you, made me feel like I really knew you. With every word, I felt the true nature of your blog shining through. To know that even you can have struggles with insecurities and the things that make us human. Sometimes I think that we all forget that underneath all of the fronts and personalities that we might put forward, we are all human and we struggle with a lot of the same things. I struggle with the “not enough” battle often, and to read your words about being enough actually brought tears to my eyes. That is one of the reasons I am commenting. I really praise you for being brave and writing the truth for others to read. I do have my own blog and am using this information to put my own personality into my blog so that my readers can actually get to know me. You provided such quality filled information and I look up to you. Cheers! – Gabriela

Keep going Katie! I found your podcast one day when I was so fed up with myself. I was told I had pre-arthritis in m mid-twenties and I just knew something was wrong. I have alway been healthy and athletic, so it was certainly a shock. The things you research and teach on are AMAZING. As a Bio major I love an appreciate the research you do. I’ve told many friends and family member about your blog also.

While I too try to strive to be a great wife (and one day mother) I have piles of laundry, run out of time to vacuum, often make “basic” dinners, buy the natural detergent, and sometimes lose my cool. I think the point of all of this is just that. We all TRY and GIVE our best and that is all we can do.

You are a trusted resource for me. And if you need to use well researched adds for your family that’s fine with me. You are a value add to the lives of all that follow you. Don’t delete the controversial topics this is where we grow.

For all the nay-sayers and hater they will do that. It’s the truth in our heart and the intentions behind the movement that matters.

If nothing else you have certainly help to change the life of my husband, myself, ad our future children. Thank you for ALLL that you do. You are AWESOME! =)

Well Katy, I can only say you have shown me what an authentic, thoughtful, opinion is in this crazy world of innumerable health choices. AND you have shown a practical, graceful way of pursuing those choices. So thanks!!

I’m a Mama two two little boys, the youngest of which has just been diagnosed with brain cancer a couple weeks ago. He is 9 months old. I have struggled with this idea of inadequacy very much… After all, we spend so much energy trying to remove toxins from our children’s environment, trying to ensure they eat healthy, trying to avoid things that could potentially cause disease– like cancer. And then my baby has it anyway. It is natural to assume I dropped the ball.

We decided to use conventional chemotherapy because the cancer is aggressive, and I don’t feel there is enough time to research alternatives, much less find practitioners well versed in them. Does this mean I’ve sold out? Surely not… I can only do the best I can, one step at a time.

It would be helpful to have have guidance on how to treat the symptoms of chemo, and how to avoid or minimize lasting effects without restoring to more drugs on top of the already rather frightening cocktail. There is very little information on this unfortunately. Especially for a child under one year. If you have any suggestions at all, I’m all ears! What would you do if you found yourself in my position?

  11. Carrie Avatar

I’ll keep it short and simple….
I wouldn’t mind seeing sensored advertising on your site. Especially if you and your family can benefit from it.

I like the way your blog appears now with occasional honest articles on the ‘real you’ they are very encouraging but too many may give further room for criticism.

Ebooks would be great, I personally like to gain information through reading rather than watching. I feel that it gives this busy mom more flexibility to reading at my own pace and reading in part and finishing at later times if need be.

  12. Bree Avatar

Wow…I can’t even…this is just…wow. It’s incredible. YOU’RE incredible. This had to take so much courage to do, and I find it amazing that you could do it. I loved this so much. Because this…this was real. This was human.
This was amazing. You did an incredible job at writing this, and I applaud you.

People can be jerks, sometimes, so I’m glad that you wrote a little about it. I don’t think people realize just how much you do on this blog; how much time and energy it must take from you. Because I’m sure that people go through the comments and are like; “wow. There are absolutely no rude comments. She’s lucky.” But no, it’s not like that. You read all of the comments. Nice AND rude.

You just delete those. But that doesn’t mean that they weren’t there. You deserve to know how greatly appreciated you are in this world. This blog has changed me and my families lives. Forever. And that’s a GOOD thing. It’s a great thing. My mother’s hands in the winter have always cracked and bled and made her life a living hell.

But thanks to your lotion, she doesn’t have that anymore. I used to have a ton of scars, but now thanks to your lotion (again) they’re finally disappearing. My hair finally looks good and isn’t dry and brittle, because of your shampoo. My brother’s horrible acne is finally gone; because of you. It’s all because of you. And I can’t thank you enough, Katie. You’ve forever changed my life in the best way possible.

And I would love to see more ‘uncensored’ Katie. You’ve made a HUGE difference in my and tons of other people’s lives. So thank you, Katie.

Thank you for everything that you’ve done.

    Hi Katie,

This is rather late, but you do raise an interesting issue I used to be sensitive about, and now I’m on my way to not giving a hoot about it—and that is exposure, related to point number 2. I’ve finally figured out that whenever people do something, they immediately become exposed. By doing something, I mean writing a blog for millions of people to see, editing Wikipedia, organising a wedding, giving a talk at a scientific conference, or making lunch. You do something, then you’re implicitly saying “Here’s what I have done, I know I am going to hear all your opinions about it”. (I find women are more insecure about this than men, and it makes sense in a way.) You can’t do anything without exposure, much less if that particular something is worthwhile, and I think we should all understand this and not care much about it. In the end, it’s you and your moral convictions and the information you had at the moment. At the most I’m going to care about the opinion of people I hold in great respect and esteem. That’s all.

Which brings me to say that I’d definitely like more of the real Katie here—you’re fun, energetic, passionate, wise and have a good dose of gumption, as my mum would say, and my favourite amount of occasional causticity. 😉 I’m positive we’d be friends if we chanced to meet for real, especially since we share what I believe is most important in life. You will be glad to know you’ve reached one of the most beautiful corners of the world with your blogging, the north of Catalonia, and I’m striving for our common goal in my home and in my small village. So thank you tonnes and please do keep it up!

Wow! Thanks so much for this. I’ll admit that I was searching your blog to see if you welcomed guest posts – so doing the very thing you were speaking up about it. Ugh.

I am floored and humbled by the way you choose to put so much time and money and love into this website, expecting nothing in return. Your content is truly some of the best I’ve seen on the internet, and you’re commitment to giving it all away for free is a beautiful gift to the world. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I, too, have struggled a lot with what is selling out and and what isn’t. I started my online business to make money for my family, so that’s very different from your approach. My business, however, is doing work that I believe in and that is meant to help people in a genuine way. It’s such a hard line to walk. Thanks for your thoughts and perspective, Katie. I’m so glad I read this.

    Peace,

Thank you so much for this wonderful and uplifting post. I truly love your site and it is one of my go-tos. I am one of the countless mamas you have helped and I am so grateful for what you do. I realize this post is a bit old at this point but I still want to answer your questions in case it still helps.

    1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

I consider selling out to be going back on your principles. If you allow advertisers that you truly believe in, it would not change my opinion in the least of you or other bloggers. You work so hard on this blog and have a family to take care of. If this helps you and is still genuine, do what you need to do.

    2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

I always prefer real. I also value your privacy though and respect it if you hold back in certain regards. Either way I support you.

    3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?
Yes! I want your book in my collection badly but it is unavailable. I prefer actual books since my computer time is limited and I have no printer.

    4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?
Everything you offer is fantastic. Just keep doing what you have been doing. I benefit from all of it.

I heard about your blog from a friend who made and gave your lip balm to us who attended her essential oil party one evening. I started reading reading and got interested but didn’t utilize any of your DIY products until a friend of mine who is a missionary to Ecuador said she wanted to bring deodorant to the Cofan Indians. I just could sent this poisonous stuff that I use to a group of people who had never been introduced to anything unnatural SO I decided to utilize your website for several products for her family as well as for her to share with the Cofans. Thank you

    Hi Katie,
I am a little late to the party but I felt I should share my experience with your blog. I found you roughly about 6 months after this post. I will say I can definitely see a difference in the tone of your posts from past to more recent. They come across much more relaxed and confident. And when I say confident I am referring to all tiny things like whether or not to use a particular word or phrase and what to replace it with for fear of someone being offended or angry. ( sometimes your posts seemed very controlled , not so much now. Seems like your having more fun with it and you have relaxed and found a stride to blogging. Because girl I can tell you from a lot of experience that their will ALWAYS be people taking offense, people trying to steal your content etc etc. But ya know what we as your readers can tell when thats happened and I know I personally call them out on that crap. And Here is why..
I had an aha! moment about a year and 1/2 ago and your blog has be invaluable in my quest to convert my household over to completely clean from top to bottom. AND THAT IS NO SMALL TASK!!! its takes a lot of passion conviction and confidence . I say confidence because the amount of resistance, hostility, ridicule etc etc I met from normally intelligent people was MINDBLOWING!! Now those are the same people that are now begging me to help them do the same. Which I have helped a few but there is a lot of work to and I have 2 small kids and I design and make jewelry and natural cleaning products. So I will offer that as a service they can pay for.
So Girl you should have no shame in advertising revenue. Because if you dont do that ad thing someone else will and you will have lost out on an oppurtunity to take your message even further !!!! And your blog has been such an amazing well written , smart and invaluable resource for us rookies out there trying to live healthy. And its really overwhelming when at every turn you hear about something else thats bad for you. We know we can turn to your blog and find out about teflon and bpa’s and all the rest of the nasty crap in everything we buy. My current crusade is about the fluoride in the drinking water.. I am continually shocked at peoples passive attitude towards it.. Must mean the fluoride is doing its job … HAHA
ANd Who knows someday there could a wellnessmama line of natural health products for colds and flu.. JUST SAYIN!!!

  20. Helena Avatar

Katie, I love this blog and everything that it is! I find that my views on life and health coincide almost exactly with yours and you save me the time (that I don’t have) of doing all the research and I trust that you do it as thoroughly as I would…that is how I use your website selfishly. But I am a firm believer in doing what’s best for you and your family FIRST because like you say, Noone will look out for them better than you will. People can have healthy bodies but what good is it if their and your social, psychological, and emotional health is compromosed? They nor you will be as much of a benefit to society. Right now, your family probably needs to spend time with you and they’re probably some of the best advocates of spreading good health and you probaby need a huge BREAK. The blog is the best I’ve ever read so I can not even imagine how much time goes into keeping it perfect…that being said, I feel frequent and perfect posts are not needed. You’ve already proven that you are sincere and even advertisements wouldn’t bother me as I trust that you would only promote what you really felt comfortable with and I know that you’d probably write “I prefer to make my own but when I cant, I’d buy x”. Your family needs to be compensated for the massive time spent here! They and you deserve it!
