This week something happened that doesn’t happen often. I got mad. Not to say I don’t have bad days, but I rarely get in a pissed-off, mad-at-the-world mood. But this week I did.

Don’t get me wrong- I have days where I wish I kept my cool with my kids, or wish I stayed calm or got more done, but I don’t get truly angry very often.

I also typically try to keep my emotions in check, but today they were most definitely not and my poor husband had to bear the blunt end of my rant/venting session.

What made me mad?

The Dark Side of Blogging

Not my blog specifically (I love you guys, my readers, and I love to write) but the idea of blogging, the profession of blogging and all the things that happen behind the scenes that readers never see or hear about. The things that bloggers get sucked into and are forced to deal & compete with.

To preface, I should explain that the part that made me most angry is the perceived “selling out” of bloggers in various ways. This made me upset because I pride myself in writing ALL my own content, doing all my own research, making sure each article is super high quality and everything I ever link to, suggest or promote are products I personally use and love.

It makes me mad when I see other bloggers not extending their readers the same courtesy.

Here’s the thing…

From the outside, health bloggers often appear to be perfect human beings who cook gourmet meals three times a day, have impeccable style, washboard abs, and an incredible personality. We aren’t (at least not all of those things all the time).

Think about the pictures posted on facebook or instragram. You put your best foot forward. So do bloggers, but many of us are even more “filtered” since we are potentially exposed to and judged by thousands of people each day.

I sincerely hope that no mom ever comes to my blog and feels like she isn’t good enough because it seems like I “do it all” or “am a great mom all the time.” I assure you I’m not. I have laundry baskets full of clothes in my bedroom right now and yesterday’s clothes are still on the floor. We’ve eaten organic hotdogs three times this week because the Wellness Mama Cookbook (and dealing with Amazon) has taken over my life.

I don’t always cook three meals a day. Occasionally, I order Pete’s Paleo or from a local Japanese restaurant out of sheer convenience.

I don’t always make my own detergent and cleaning supplies. Sometimes it’s just easier (and saves time) to buy (natural) products at the store or online.

Sometimes I cry because of comments I receive on my blog or facebook (sometimes happy tears, but usually tears of sadness, hurt, or pain). I’m very much not a perfect mom. Nor a perfect human.

I blog to share things that have made my life easier or better and to hopefully help other moms, but I hope that everything I write encourages and uplifts and never makes another woman feel like she isn’t doing enough or isn’t good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way- trust me…. you are good enough. You are doing enough. You are a great mom, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way lately is that your children, your family, need you. Imperfect, wonderful, you.

Back to Blogging Though…

Certain things I’ve seen in the blogging world lately have really upset me because I felt like they crossed that line with their readers. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bloggers making money. But I do have a problem with:

  • I have a problem with bloggers making money in a non-genuine way at the expense of their readers.
  • I have a problem with incestuous back-room affiliate deals. I have a problem with “I’ll promote your product if you promote mine.”
  • I have a problem when people duplicate my blog exactly for themselves, the design, every post and picture on the site, strip out my affiliate links and add their own, then claim everything as theirs.
  • I have a problem when other sites pull every post and picture of mine to use for themselves… to get more traffic so they can charge more for ads.
  • I have a problem with people copying content (both my content and that of others), stealing ideas and writing in an unauthentic voice solely for the goal of pushing more content out to the search engines. This annoys me because it isn’t about Google. It is about you. The readers. I don’t write for Google, I write for you!
  • I have a problem with the 100+ emails I get a day from people asking me to promote their stuff to my “list” (the people who subscribe to my email newsletter)

I don’t have a “list.” I have readers. I have friends. I have you. And you are the most important part of blogging to me.

And you know what? I’m not the only one who feels this way about the dark side of blogging.

I’m extremely aware, appreciative and grateful every single day for the amazing community that has grown through Wellness Mama. It is so much bigger than me. It is a group. A sisterhood. A family of moms who quite literally have the power to change the world. I don’t take that lightly. It annoys me when I see bloggers in the industry who do.

For me, blogging is really about creating a change for our kids. It isn’t about the money (though if that happens, it is great since we have six kids to feed, clothe and put through college one day) but that isn’t the goal. It is about making a healthier future for my children so they have decades and decades of health after college and so I get to live long enough to meet and enjoy my grandchildren.

I like to think/hope that I don’t have the amazing community that has developed here because I’ve written good articles about certain topics, but because I care about you. Because I want an actual (online) relationship with you. Because I care about the future for your kids as much as for my own.

I don’t want to be a “celebrity” from blogging (as some bloggers seem to want). In fact, this would utterly terrify me and get me so far out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t know who I was anymore. My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.

Someone else could copy my writing, copy my posts, copy all my ideas, but it wouldn’t be the same because the passion isn’t there. Because the world doesn’t need another blog post about how to make lip balm or magnesium body butter (which I did invent, btw), but the world needs more passion. It needs more people who care. If that is you- I am forever grateful for you… really! If you are passionate about your own goals, your own life, your own family and their health… you are changing the world more than the bloggers you see making tons of money and looking perfect on Instagram.

Because here is the deal… at the end of the day, it isn’t about me (and I’m super glad it isn’t!). I don’t use my last name. Not because I’m ashamed of it or have something to hide, but because it isn’t important (and because I value privacy for those six small children I mentioned). And because the movement, the “wellness mama idea”, is so much bigger than me.

I’m here because I want to make a change, not become famous.

My Blogging Struggle

It takes an incredible amount of time to make Wellness Mama what it is. Researching for posts. Taking photographs. Writing. Editing. Moderating comments. Social media promotion & communication. Etc.

It costs a lot of money to keep it running. Design & development costs. Hosting. Upgraded servers when traffic grows. Premium plugins. Email service. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The list goes on.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I could implement ads with the click of a button and make much more money that would help support my family and help fund a charity I’ve wanted to start for a long time (to provide sustainable food and clean water worldwide and to help distribute leftover food from farmers markets to soup kitchens, schools and food banks), but I’ve never made the jump because I personally hate ads and feel this would be “selling out.”

I want to make sure I’m always focused on you, but sometimes I don’t know the best way to do this. I make sure I don’t use spammy tactics to try to sell you things you don’t need. I don’t white label products that I didn’t create to make money. I moderate every comment so that the community is an uplifting and healthy environment for you to learn. I prominently display my affiliate policy so that readers are aware of my quality standards, practices, and promotion requirements.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I’m very much imperfect. WellnessMama.com has grown beyond my greatest goals and expectations. The blog gets a lot of traffic and in turn makes money through some of the products and resources I recommend.

I still feel like a failure because I’m not the perfect mom or the perfect wife. I think we all do. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think any mom goes to bed feeling like she has the whole wife/mother thing under control. I know I don’t. In fact, every day, I stress because of this incredible community that I love so much. Because I don’t always look, act and behave the way a “perfect” mom should. I think we all do.

So- long story short. Thank YOU so much for reading. For putting up with my rant. For caring about your family and the future of our children and our world.

At the end of the day, I don’t give a damn about just having your email address on my list. I want you to actually adopt the healthy changes I write and email about. To put in the time. To make a lasting change for your family. To say that your family’s life has improved because of changes you made. That is what matters to me.

2014 has been a tough year in many ways. The blog has grown. A lot. But I’ve made mistakes. I promoted a course (against my intuition) for someone that wasn’t a good fit… because I was too competitive. I started promoting an essential oils company (against my better judgement) because I thought there was an opportunity to help some friends make money. I self published the original Wellness Mama Cookbook, even though I had numerous offers from traditional publishers for upfront advances. And it’s wreaked havoc on my thyroid condition.

At the same time, 2014 has been an incredibly wonderful and rewarding year and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I’ve made awesome friends who started as online friends and are now real life friends, like Heather, Genevieve, Emily, and Kelly (go check them out- they are amazing!). People like Sean, Steve & Jordan, Mary, and Christa. I finally found an amazing doctor who has helped me find answers for my thyroid struggles. And I finally finished writing my book!

My Pledge to You and a Question

So here is my pledge to you: I’m going to stop trying to be the “perfect” mom on the blog and social media. I’m going to stop stressing about answering every comment and start deleting those that don’t meet my requirements. I’m going to spend more time with family, even if that means I don’t post quite as often. I’m going to only create the most valuable, most helpful things I can and share those. I’m going to stop deleting posts because I feel like they aren’t good enough or might be met with resistance. I’m going to stop censoring my writing to meet the “squeaky clean Wellness Mama image” and let the real me shine through.

Because at the end of the day, I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

I feel inferior because I don’t look like Jennifer Aniston with the patience of June Cleaver and the culinary skills of Julia Childs. I feel imperfect because I don’t have 28 hours a day to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

In the coming weeks:

  • I’m going to be moving away from most “JV promotions” because they just don’t seem genuine to me.
  • I’m going to start creating more ebooks, courses, and products. Things that I enjoy doing and things that I wish I’d had when I started out…
  • I’m going to focus on creating more helpful and useful content for you.
  • I’m going to focus on enjoying my family and having balance and enjoying things more and stressing less.

This crazy world of blogging has led me to wrestle with several internal struggles lately, and rather than try to face them on my own, I figured I’d ask for your advice (it has never failed me before, so no pressure!).

I Want Your Opinion

1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?

4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

    Katie,

I have never commented on your stuff before, but you are my go to website for homemade natural products. For three years, I have been working to replace my personal care products and my household items with only ingredients that I recognize. Sometimes, I fail miserably. I get busy and just buy organic shampoo rather than make my own. However, any time that I want to make something at home, I start with Wellness Mama because I know that you have actually tested your recipes.
I would be okay with more ads on your site. I would not consider it selling out unless you were actually endorsing the product within your writing. Even then, it would only be selling out, in my mind, if you had not tested the product yourself.
My biggest complaint with your site, honestly, is that it does make me feel inadequate. I know that you don’t mean it that way, and it obviously hasn’t stopped me from coming back over and over again. However, I would not mind a little less of the squeaky clean image because it would remind me that even you are human.
Overall, I just want you to know that your hard work does not go unnoticed. I love your blog! I hope to continue to use it for many, many years to come!

Oh, one more quick thing — interestingly, the other bloggers you list above are among my “half-dozen go-to” bloggers, as well 😉

Hi Katie! I can see you’ve received “lots of love” in response to this post, and I have to say, well-deserved! I have been reading for a while now and you are one of my half-dozen “go-to” bloggers when I want to know what is what. You can always tell when someone is genuine and one can definitely see where your priorities are in reading your postings. (I think it’s probably fair to say your surname is out of the bag, though, after publishing a cookbook, girlfriend!)

A couple of quick comments: 1) Many people have ad-blockers on their browsers, so they won’t mind if you add advertisements; they just won’t see them. and 2) I really wish Amazon allowed international affiliate links, as I now live in the UK. I have found, however, that if I simply substitute “.co.uk” for “.com” in the link, I can sometimes find the corresponding product on amazon.co.uk with your link still attached. What I don’t know is whether you can actually get paid from that purchase. So, I will try one tomorrow to see if it works. I’ll email you the purchase and you can let us know if it worked and you got the credit for it! Because I believe one is “worthy of their hire” and you *should* get some compensation for all the hours you spend on researching and writing so that we can benefit from what you discover. You go girl!

I realize this is an older post but I was looking for cleaning products you use on your site and this is the first search result. I am not sure why but obviously God knew I needed to read it. I am so glad I did. I have been reading your blog for years. I had a blog back in 2008 and I remember reading your stuff back then. I have since restarted blogging (I love writing and am hopefully done with baby hatching ;o). I struggle with ads as well but I need to create some income to start and hopefully I can tailor them to fit my blog and not just let random ones play out. Blogging is hard work. I love that you are impressed with your readers and not just the “list”. I hear about that so much right now. I just wanted you to know that I am one of your devoted readers, always using your suggestions and buying products through your site when I need something.
Selling out is anything that takes away from your own morals and beliefs. For me as a Christian I can not promote ads that may put my readers at risk and let them stumble into sin .I made a graphic image for my twitter page that says I will not compromise my faith and I will keep my path ever before me as to remind me of why I am doing this. Its not for those that oppose. It is for those that inquire with genuine integrity and kindness. Keep up the hard work Mama and know that there are many of us bloggers who want well for all of us. The internet and the world is big enough for all of us 🙂

Thank you for this raw, transparent post. I am SO encouraged by the raw, unfiltered Katie. A “wellness” life feels more achievable when I know you have piles of unfolded laundry too.

I want to thank you for all the work you put into your blog. When i was pregnant with my now 2 year old daughter was when i first step into the “natural world.” your blog was the first I really read and has now become my go-to blog. I have made my own deodorant, body butter, toothpaste, laundry detergent and we now drink raw milk, use magnesium oil, eat fermented foods and so much more!! I learned ALL of that from your blog! I use this blog so much that I take it for granted. I think of it as a resource to check and sometimes forget about the hard work and the REAL person behind the blog. Raw posts like this are so great! I like your podcast for that reason too. Its great to connect with the real Katie and not simply check the blog like an encylopedia.
Thank you for all that you do to make this possible.

I dont mind adds at all except when its a shop that ive been to and they show the products that ive looked at that still freaks me out and the animated adds means I cant use the website any more so I have to unsubscribe apart from that you go girl :o)

  7. Marie Avatar

If you want to make money, write small ebooks and I will buy it. I don’t mind ads as long as you actually like the products the company sells. I actually like that you recommend specific products. I wouldn’t know where to shop for some things otherwise (for example essential oils quality varies so much, I appreciate your links)

Lastly I don’t think anyone here cares if you are perfect or not. We are just looking for an advice to fix our lives. That’s all.

You are doing pretty good though.

Thank you for your website, it sure fixed my health.

  8. Elsa Avatar

    Katie,

I have just read this post and have read some of the comments but not all.

I have some autoimmune disorders (incl. Hashimoto’s) and it took me a few years to start feeling better. I was on this very slow path of self-improvement and then I discovered your blog this year (researching coconut oil). What a treasure trove!

I bought your e-book about pregnancy tips a few days ago and it took some fear away. I read the post about hiring a doula tonight and it took more fear away.

The truth is that I had not realised until I had read these that I had been so fearful in the first place! You are like a new best friend that I don’t see but only read.

So thank you for putting the time, effort and care into your blog. It has inspired me to try new angles and learn more in order to get my health back. You made a difference in my life this year (hello new toothpaste!), and you have helped or inspired lots of others throughout the years, so please do not let negative comments, reviews put you down because YOU are making a real difference and in the end this is what really matters.

Warmest wishes to you and your whole family for 2016!

Hi Katie. I know I’m about a year late joining this conversation. I’ve been researching blogging for awhile now because I’m considering starting a blog aimed towards spiritual growth. This post is the first & only one I’ve read of yours having found it while searching for “is it wrong to make money off God”. Your post doesn’t entirely fit the criteria from my search but I am so glad I found it. I found more answers from your post and comments than anywhere else. Your dedication is inspiring and I feel had I never found this post- I unknowingly would have fallen into the categories of things that displeases you. Not all- but some. You have inspired me to maintain the passion behind my future posts and to create a wonderful community that I can call my very own. Thank you so much. I hope this past year has brought you much joy. I will have to tune to your blog, Lord knows I could use some healthy inspiration in my life!! Keep doing what you’re doing and God bless!

How could writing what you are passionate about ever be considered selling out? In my eyes, the more money you make for doing something you love, the better… so long as you stay true to yourself.

I have a pretty successful blog myself (about mental health) and wish I could make money off it! Unfortunately I feel bad even pushing the idea of being really healthy because I know how mental illness can take that away from you and make it a million times harder than it is for ‘normal’ folk (even though it is still hard for them, too!). And I also understand how bad it is to have people steal your work, particularly when you may be okay with it if they just asked and remembered to credit you! I once found excerpts from my blog on a patient information leaflet sent out by my local Health Care Trust!!! I phoned them about it, spoke to 9 different people, and got nothing in response, which was annoying. Especially as I would never have refused that quote or any others if they had asked! I must admit, though I have had poetry stolen no-one has ever tried to copy my blog completely. I can only imagine that was horrible and I hope you managed to have the sites taken down.

I must admit, you made me laugh though when you said you weren’t as pretty as (that lady who used to be someone). When I first saw your picture a few days ago my first thought was “Wow, she is beautiful” and my second was “I wish I was that beautiful!”. Mind you, we never see ourselves as the beauties we are, but I think your beauty shines from the inside as much as the outside and in this world that is so much more precious than anything else. That kind of beauty makes the world go round. My daughter has it, and so do you.

I found your site recently. I wanted to say that I really enjoy the way that you write as I feel the love, authenticity and depth of knowledge in your articles.

I hope that doubt never again affects your confidence. This site has changed so many lives across the world… I trust that you will find the answers that feel right for you so you will understand your value and feel the worth of your work. Please know that when you doubt yourself and when you feel less than, it is time to stop comparing yourself to others and trust in the next step you know in your heart you are meant to take.

Thank you so much for sharing.

This post has been up for quite a while at this point, so I don’t know if you’re still reading comments. I’ve popped onto your Blog before, and had to leave because I knew I could get sucked in and my day would disappear :). Today I let myself keep reading, and am so impressed with the information and encouragement you offer to readers who are on the path to improve their health and their lives.

It’s sad and true that so many people in the world need to tear others down, and it’s doubly sad when kind, positive, and generous people like you get caught in that. I think it’s great that you shared your experience here, and hope the venting and the support that followed have allowed you to put it behind you, and ignore people with that destructive orientation.

I’m a naturopathic doctor, so I read wellness blogs with a pretty skeptical eye (usually I’m looking for articles worth sharing with my patients); often there’s a lot of cringing. After spending probably too much time (heh) today here, I can say — no cringing. Not only do I think you should, and hope you do, keep doing what you’re doing, I personally would be completely in support of your finding creative ways to earn a living from work you obviously put so much time into. I do personally find it jarring when I’m on a “green” or wellness blogs, and unfiltered ads pop up for things like Tide laundry detergent :). It sounds like you’re willing to filter, which would allow you to offer a service for your readers (on relevant products and services) while earning a living for your family. The benchmark that makes sense to me – would I support this product for free? If so, I could allow advertising (because you’re offering the company a service, and they should pay you). But knowing it’s good enough you would offer it for free, might help you decide.

Danny Iny has a great perspective that I adore: “Business is about building a sustainable way of making the impact that you care about making.” That is, starting first with the impact you care about, find a sustainable way to be able to keep doing it. If you are only investing time and money, and not seeing something return to you, for most of us, this is just not sustainable in the long run.

Before I sign off… because I’m both a mom and a doctor, I can’t restrain myself from pointing out that it’s more important to take care of your health than meet a publishing deadline :). Rememember what they say on airplanes? You have to put your own oxygen mask on first, even before you help your kids. A mom-patient of mine exclaimed immediately when I told her that, “I would never do that!” And this is what so many of us socialized in this culture tend to do as moms and women… sacrifice ourselves to take care of others. But as the oxygen-mask analogy so aptly points out — self-care is a necessary ingredient for helping others (and perhaps more importantly, we as women and moms are simply *worthy* of care too!)… if you didn’t put on your oxygen mask first, and you fainted, how could you possibly save your children? Anyway, I hope by now this is old news since your cookbook has long been out. But just in case, because I bet you’ll write another one 🙂

Blessings upon you for all the earth-grounded wisdom you share.

Hey Wellness Mama. I appreciate the amount of time and work you put into your site. As an asthmatic with chemical sensitivities, I’m always looking for more natural ways to clean the air, along with natural ways to clean surfaces as well. I go online and do a lot of research on these things for myself too. I wish I had found your site years ago. Yours is one of the best out of many green sites I visit. For example, I’ve never even heard of the salt lamp. I will have to try that option. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Bloggers like you are invaluable to those of us who need this kind of info.

You do the research and work for us…and we appreciate it! Just remember, you can’t take care of others until you take care of yourself first. I don’t have kids and our views on certain issues are very different (I’m a very liberal agnostic, etc), but if even someone like me can benefit from your site, doesn’t that tell you that you ARE helping many of us? I have a brother who lives with me who’s on disability for various health issues and I research things for him too.

Your posts on hormone issues for women, things for the skin (he has a terrible skin disorder among other things), etc, are very helpful to me, since I can’t take any type of synthetic hormones for my PCOS (and I suspect I may have a thyroid issue as well). Doctors just want to dump drugs on us. They treat the symptoms, not the cause of the symptoms. So, sites like yours are very helpful to those of us on tighter budgets as far as making and taking things that also won’t cost us a lot of money.

The world is an expensive place, so if you need to post ads for certain companies you personally like, you’re not “selling out”. You’re just doing what you need to do to support your kids. Not all the companies or products you mention (per your own comments in your article above) are going to work out. Don’t beat yourself up about that. You only know what ya know at the time. Even if you have to drop certain things you used to promote and then feel bad if you have to “backpeddle” on certain products or programs a bit, that’s just the norm of trial and error, especially in the organic world when there are so many companies claiming to sell 100% organic items. It’s hard to know what’s what, but it’s on us as your readers to be adults and to more research on our own as well. I’ve never understood readers of blogs who then attack the blogger on something they’ve recommended. We’re adults and we need to do our own research too.

Anyway, keep up the good work. This is a wonderful site and blog. You’re very thorough. I am an introvert too. We appreciate all the work you do on here, even if it doesn’t always feel like it to you.

As an agnostic to a Catholic, god bless Katie. You do good and amazing work.

    – Mary

    Dear Wellness Mama,

THANK YOU for inspiring me! I’m not a mama, just a girl in her mid 20’s, but the day I do become a mom, I want to be just like you! I have always loved cooking, exercising, and being creative with natural ingredients I had lying around, but it became a passion because of you and your enthusiasm for what you do! Being you is enough to continue making your blog a success. Your passion has encouraged me to photograph my meals and make a recipe blog that also encourages people to live healthy, simple quality lives. I have always been a huge advocate of wellness, healthy living, and I can’t thank you enough for sharing all your wonderful ideas and research with all of us. I remember signing up for your newsletter about 7 months ago when I first started following your posts. There’s not a day I don’t tell someone new about your blog because I TRULY believe in you and your guidance and creative, wonderful ideas! Please don’t ever take this blog down and don’t lose sight of your passions, despite any advertisers or obstacles life may bring! haha. I think you should definitely make money for what you do, you have earned it!!!

Best of luck with everything, but most of all, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. You ROCK!!!!! 🙂

I think that a lot of people these have forgotten three things. The meaning of the word responsible, the meaning of the word respect, and the meaning of the American Indian saying ” judge not a man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins “.
I’ve just found your site. It looks amazing. You keep the faith with what you are doing. God made you therefore in his eyes you are perfect. Unfortunately you are also human, and should be allowed to be so. You stick with the positive people in your life. God will take care of the rest for you. Sorry if this sounds religious or fanatical… It’s not meant to be. Au Revior.

    1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

Selling out is just that “selling”. Anything you do only for money is selling out. Not counting what you do to make a living on a daily basis of course, not many people like their primary jobs but we do have to pay the bills. I mean selling what you love to do for money.

    2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

I just started reading your blog today, looking for sauerkraut recipes, and what I have read so far if just right. Enough to let me know you are the type of person I would want in my life but not so much that I feel you are exposing yourself to me.

    3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you? What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

Right now, I think this site is just enough. As I mentioned I just started reading you today so I can’t really say what I would want more of in how you deliver your product. Keep up the good work
