This week something happened that doesn’t happen often. I got mad. Not to say I don’t have bad days, but I rarely get in a pissed-off, mad-at-the-world mood. But this week I did.

Don’t get me wrong- I have days where I wish I kept my cool with my kids, or wish I stayed calm or got more done, but I don’t get truly angry very often.

I also typically try to keep my emotions in check, but today they were most definitely not and my poor husband had to bear the blunt end of my rant/venting session.

What made me mad?

The Dark Side of Blogging

Not my blog specifically (I love you guys, my readers, and I love to write) but the idea of blogging, the profession of blogging and all the things that happen behind the scenes that readers never see or hear about. The things that bloggers get sucked into and are forced to deal & compete with.

To preface, I should explain that the part that made me most angry is the perceived “selling out” of bloggers in various ways. This made me upset because I pride myself in writing ALL my own content, doing all my own research, making sure each article is super high quality and everything I ever link to, suggest or promote are products I personally use and love.

It makes me mad when I see other bloggers not extending their readers the same courtesy.

Here’s the thing…

From the outside, health bloggers often appear to be perfect human beings who cook gourmet meals three times a day, have impeccable style, washboard abs, and an incredible personality. We aren’t (at least not all of those things all the time).

Think about the pictures posted on facebook or instragram. You put your best foot forward. So do bloggers, but many of us are even more “filtered” since we are potentially exposed to and judged by thousands of people each day.

I sincerely hope that no mom ever comes to my blog and feels like she isn’t good enough because it seems like I “do it all” or “am a great mom all the time.” I assure you I’m not. I have laundry baskets full of clothes in my bedroom right now and yesterday’s clothes are still on the floor. We’ve eaten organic hotdogs three times this week because the Wellness Mama Cookbook (and dealing with Amazon) has taken over my life.

I don’t always cook three meals a day. Occasionally, I order Pete’s Paleo or from a local Japanese restaurant out of sheer convenience.

I don’t always make my own detergent and cleaning supplies. Sometimes it’s just easier (and saves time) to buy (natural) products at the store or online.

Sometimes I cry because of comments I receive on my blog or facebook (sometimes happy tears, but usually tears of sadness, hurt, or pain). I’m very much not a perfect mom. Nor a perfect human.

I blog to share things that have made my life easier or better and to hopefully help other moms, but I hope that everything I write encourages and uplifts and never makes another woman feel like she isn’t doing enough or isn’t good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way- trust me…. you are good enough. You are doing enough. You are a great mom, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way lately is that your children, your family, need you. Imperfect, wonderful, you.

Back to Blogging Though…

Certain things I’ve seen in the blogging world lately have really upset me because I felt like they crossed that line with their readers. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bloggers making money. But I do have a problem with:

  • I have a problem with bloggers making money in a non-genuine way at the expense of their readers.
  • I have a problem with incestuous back-room affiliate deals. I have a problem with “I’ll promote your product if you promote mine.”
  • I have a problem when people duplicate my blog exactly for themselves, the design, every post and picture on the site, strip out my affiliate links and add their own, then claim everything as theirs.
  • I have a problem when other sites pull every post and picture of mine to use for themselves… to get more traffic so they can charge more for ads.
  • I have a problem with people copying content (both my content and that of others), stealing ideas and writing in an unauthentic voice solely for the goal of pushing more content out to the search engines. This annoys me because it isn’t about Google. It is about you. The readers. I don’t write for Google, I write for you!
  • I have a problem with the 100+ emails I get a day from people asking me to promote their stuff to my “list” (the people who subscribe to my email newsletter)

I don’t have a “list.” I have readers. I have friends. I have you. And you are the most important part of blogging to me.

And you know what? I’m not the only one who feels this way about the dark side of blogging.

I’m extremely aware, appreciative and grateful every single day for the amazing community that has grown through Wellness Mama. It is so much bigger than me. It is a group. A sisterhood. A family of moms who quite literally have the power to change the world. I don’t take that lightly. It annoys me when I see bloggers in the industry who do.

For me, blogging is really about creating a change for our kids. It isn’t about the money (though if that happens, it is great since we have six kids to feed, clothe and put through college one day) but that isn’t the goal. It is about making a healthier future for my children so they have decades and decades of health after college and so I get to live long enough to meet and enjoy my grandchildren.

I like to think/hope that I don’t have the amazing community that has developed here because I’ve written good articles about certain topics, but because I care about you. Because I want an actual (online) relationship with you. Because I care about the future for your kids as much as for my own.

I don’t want to be a “celebrity” from blogging (as some bloggers seem to want). In fact, this would utterly terrify me and get me so far out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t know who I was anymore. My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.

Someone else could copy my writing, copy my posts, copy all my ideas, but it wouldn’t be the same because the passion isn’t there. Because the world doesn’t need another blog post about how to make lip balm or magnesium body butter (which I did invent, btw), but the world needs more passion. It needs more people who care. If that is you- I am forever grateful for you… really! If you are passionate about your own goals, your own life, your own family and their health… you are changing the world more than the bloggers you see making tons of money and looking perfect on Instagram.

Because here is the deal… at the end of the day, it isn’t about me (and I’m super glad it isn’t!). I don’t use my last name. Not because I’m ashamed of it or have something to hide, but because it isn’t important (and because I value privacy for those six small children I mentioned). And because the movement, the “wellness mama idea”, is so much bigger than me.

I’m here because I want to make a change, not become famous.

My Blogging Struggle

It takes an incredible amount of time to make Wellness Mama what it is. Researching for posts. Taking photographs. Writing. Editing. Moderating comments. Social media promotion & communication. Etc.

It costs a lot of money to keep it running. Design & development costs. Hosting. Upgraded servers when traffic grows. Premium plugins. Email service. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The list goes on.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I could implement ads with the click of a button and make much more money that would help support my family and help fund a charity I’ve wanted to start for a long time (to provide sustainable food and clean water worldwide and to help distribute leftover food from farmers markets to soup kitchens, schools and food banks), but I’ve never made the jump because I personally hate ads and feel this would be “selling out.”

I want to make sure I’m always focused on you, but sometimes I don’t know the best way to do this. I make sure I don’t use spammy tactics to try to sell you things you don’t need. I don’t white label products that I didn’t create to make money. I moderate every comment so that the community is an uplifting and healthy environment for you to learn. I prominently display my affiliate policy so that readers are aware of my quality standards, practices, and promotion requirements.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I’m very much imperfect. WellnessMama.com has grown beyond my greatest goals and expectations. The blog gets a lot of traffic and in turn makes money through some of the products and resources I recommend.

I still feel like a failure because I’m not the perfect mom or the perfect wife. I think we all do. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think any mom goes to bed feeling like she has the whole wife/mother thing under control. I know I don’t. In fact, every day, I stress because of this incredible community that I love so much. Because I don’t always look, act and behave the way a “perfect” mom should. I think we all do.

So- long story short. Thank YOU so much for reading. For putting up with my rant. For caring about your family and the future of our children and our world.

At the end of the day, I don’t give a damn about just having your email address on my list. I want you to actually adopt the healthy changes I write and email about. To put in the time. To make a lasting change for your family. To say that your family’s life has improved because of changes you made. That is what matters to me.

2014 has been a tough year in many ways. The blog has grown. A lot. But I’ve made mistakes. I promoted a course (against my intuition) for someone that wasn’t a good fit… because I was too competitive. I started promoting an essential oils company (against my better judgement) because I thought there was an opportunity to help some friends make money. I self published the original Wellness Mama Cookbook, even though I had numerous offers from traditional publishers for upfront advances. And it’s wreaked havoc on my thyroid condition.

At the same time, 2014 has been an incredibly wonderful and rewarding year and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I’ve made awesome friends who started as online friends and are now real life friends, like Heather, Genevieve, Emily, and Kelly (go check them out- they are amazing!). People like Sean, Steve & Jordan, Mary, and Christa. I finally found an amazing doctor who has helped me find answers for my thyroid struggles. And I finally finished writing my book!

My Pledge to You and a Question

So here is my pledge to you: I’m going to stop trying to be the “perfect” mom on the blog and social media. I’m going to stop stressing about answering every comment and start deleting those that don’t meet my requirements. I’m going to spend more time with family, even if that means I don’t post quite as often. I’m going to only create the most valuable, most helpful things I can and share those. I’m going to stop deleting posts because I feel like they aren’t good enough or might be met with resistance. I’m going to stop censoring my writing to meet the “squeaky clean Wellness Mama image” and let the real me shine through.

Because at the end of the day, I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

I feel inferior because I don’t look like Jennifer Aniston with the patience of June Cleaver and the culinary skills of Julia Childs. I feel imperfect because I don’t have 28 hours a day to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

In the coming weeks:

  • I’m going to be moving away from most “JV promotions” because they just don’t seem genuine to me.
  • I’m going to start creating more ebooks, courses, and products. Things that I enjoy doing and things that I wish I’d had when I started out…
  • I’m going to focus on creating more helpful and useful content for you.
  • I’m going to focus on enjoying my family and having balance and enjoying things more and stressing less.

This crazy world of blogging has led me to wrestle with several internal struggles lately, and rather than try to face them on my own, I figured I’d ask for your advice (it has never failed me before, so no pressure!).

I Want Your Opinion

1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?

4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

Katie, I’m very touched by this post. I think you do a wonderful job. And you’re right—you don’t have to be perfect! I encourage you to just delete rude comments, don’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable (but what are “jv promotions”?), and definitely prioritize your health and your family over the blog, however great it is.

As to your questions: #1 I love it that you don’t have ads, but, I would think no less of you for having carefully screened ads. I trust your judgment. #2 I’d love for you to share your uncensored self, but, again, do what is comfortable for you. I don’t have an opinion on #3, but whatever you do, I’m sure it will be top-notch.

Hi, I just found your blog (literally today) and wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. I searched for something very specific and your articles provided a very simple straightforward answer(not always easy to find). So, thanks, I think what you are doing is awesome and you’ve already helped me.

Your blog is one of the first natural/healthy living blogs I started following along with mommypotamus about 2 years ago. I’ve loved your blog from the beginning because you have provided a wealth of knowledge. I can tell that you research everything you write about and I trust your opinion. You’re human and you will make mistakes like the rest of us, but most of the time I feel like I can look something up on your blog and not feel like I need to continue researching because you did it for me. I love that! You’ve inspired me to make changes in the supplements I take, to the products I use for cleaning, cooking, cosmetics, to how I approached the birth of my first baby, and so many other things. I think the direction you want to head with your blog is only going to improve the site. All that being said, here is my answer to your three questions: 1. Allow the advertisements you feel ok with. You’re providing a service to people and you should be compensated! You have a family to take care of! Doesn’t bother me one bit. 2. I would much prefer the “real you”. My only criticism of your blog as it currently is, is that it does seem like you only show the perfect side of you which has made me feel less than perfect at times. Just like when all of us see our seemingly “perfect” friends on social media. However, when I’ve watched you on webinars, I don’t get that feeling from you at all. You seem very genuine and I’d love to see the real, unedited side of you on your blog. 3. All of those things are great. However, I probably use your blog the most as a health and wellness encyclopedia. 🙂 Oh no hubby is coming down with a cold, what can we do naturally? What should I pack in my hospital bag and what can I do at home in early labor? What are the benefits of magnesium oil? What is a good recipe for homemade toothpaste? Etc. Etc. Ebooks and courses can also be a great source of these kinds of information too. Hope this helps! Thank you for the work that you do. It has been a constant resource for me in my health and wellness journey!!

Hi Katie, I’m a recent discoverer of your blog and I think I might be your twin (although definitely your more unhealthy & less knowledgable twin) – RC, 5 kids, stay-at-home mum who’s homeschooling. I love how you’re not afraid to tackle anything (birth control, abortion, reusable menstrual products, etc.) and you do it in a non-judgemental, but firm, way. That shows me that you really do want the best for us – like a great friend or close sister, you’re prepared to tackle the hard stuff for our good. Keep it coming. Some won’t want to hear it, but they can go find a blog that tells them what they want to hear.

BTW, for a bit of light humour at another home-schoooling mother’s madcap life, I highly recommend “Please Don’t Drink the Holy Water” by Susie Lloyd. She also has a sequel which I haven’t read. If I’m ever in need of a pick-me-up, I read a chapter or two from this book. She puts life back in perspective for me.

Thanks for all you do, Katie, and I will be praying for you. Wishing you a peaceful, blessed Christmas. Hugs from sunny Australia.

Wooohoooo! You go girl!!! As always, I LOVE your post and your blog as an entirety! I am constantly referring to you and your blog anytime I am talking to friends and family and even strangers. Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! As far as your questions:

    1. I would consider “selling out” to be having a blog for the sole purpose of making money only and not having an ounce of research or truth behind your posts. Go ahead and allow advertisers! We trust you and your judgement on who you let on your page and if you make a decision on one that turns out bad, well, it happens, we are only human. No one is perfect and if someone expects you to be, well, I think you have enough supporters on your page to overcome the negativity.

    2. We want it all!!! Every ounce of Katie, from your troubles to your stresses to how you are able to juggle it all and when you had a mishap and didn’t succeed. It shows us, that even the most researched and experienced mama in our eyes, also has struggles and has a lot to juggle.

    3. I love your courses and products! I would love more on healing with herbs. Regulating your auto-immune system, I have POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). Homesteading and growing everything yourself. I would also LOVE hard copy books instead of just the eBooks. It’s the only thing holding me back from buying your first book. I’m huge on recycling and such too, but I’m also a big time prepper and if the power or internet did ever go out, I would want a hard copy to refer too.

That’s it! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and enjoy your family time! I’m glad you are making more time for you and your family!

    Hi Katie,
Firstly I want to say how much I appreciate your blog. I have learnt SO much from it directly and also from some of the links / contacts gained through the Wellness Family Summit and this has improved my health and that of my family. Thank you!

I am based in the UK and I realise I may be going against the grain here but one of the things that attracted me to your blog originally was the lack of ads. It helped me to know that the blog wasn’t just set up as a screen to promote certain products (which I’m sure some are), because the only ‘product’ links were through affiliates and this was clearly and openly disclosed. So, while it would not stop me reading your stuff now because I already trust you, on the other hand if I were to come across your site for the first time with ads, it might have made me less trusting.

However, I agree with other comments that you need to make a living and be remunerated for all the time and cost of running the blog.

Have you considered as an alternative forging links with some companies in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other countries where your blog is extensively followed? Not only would this bring you some more income from affiliates, but it would be helpful to those of us based in those countries to find companies that stock many of the products you mention. Currently, all your links are US ones (obviously as you’re based there) which means that when I want to buy something similar I have to then go and do my own research for equivalent UK companies. I can’t see this being a clash as nearly all the links are for fresh produce and therefore not internationally relevant.

Wellness Mama! I love your site! I have never felt or read anything I thought was negative. I often go to your website to look-up advise, recipes & thoughts. You are a positive force! The energy you emit is one that I trust, I don’t question your ads, I feel you would not intentionally post anything you feel is questionable. So in my opinion do what your heart & gut tells you. I would also love to start a blog but I’ve also asked my self all the questions you have. I would love to pay it forward with good & responsible information that I have read. because. Your caring contributions to making our world a better place is admirable.

  8. Wendell Avatar

Katie, you said that you hate ads ad feel that they are selling out. Ads are one way of sharing something that is worthwhile. By not sharing an ad for a good product you are preventing some people from ever finding a product that may help them a great deal. There are many other people out there that have great products that do good. Ads can be a sellout if the products are not good, but ads for good products are a benefit to your readers. Lastly, you have a responsibility to yourself and your family to financially productive in your efforts so that you can share the bounty of your efforts with your family and your desired charity. My advice: find great products and share them with your readers. If this bothers you, then use the product, write a review, and send your readers to that review to determine from your review if they want to consider the product before they see the sales copy for that product. And if one of those people decide that your products meet there standards and want to sell your products, that is a mutually beneficial relationship, not an incestuous relationship.

  9. Kristen Avatar

Dear Katie, I’m just getting to read this. First to answer your questions

    1. Advertising doesn’t bother me if it doesn’t slow opening the page. I want you to make money.

    2. Squeaky clean or not I love your posts. I feel like you are in my brain from birth trauma to burt’s bees Chapstick. The day and time I’m thinking about these things…so often out pops a post from you too! ! It’s an honor to feel not alone in this mom journey – from one wellness mom to another! I’m so so so not up to speed as you are – that your idea of real would still be light years ahead of me. Feel free to be real and know that it is welcome and inspirational.

I like your posts bc they are not lengthy or they are just the right length. I’m not sure I’d go for courses or anything that required more commitment (time) on my part but I’d be happy to have the opportunity when the time came.

I see the inbredness of some of the blog world. Don’t worry, most of us can just “feel” that icky promote me, I promote you circles of yuckiness. I don’t have a word for it but just get that sense. Thanks for not doing that and sending us 200 million emails detailing these types of promotions!!!!

You are so exceptionally on my wavelength with what you post I honestly can’t thank you enough- it’s been three almost four years for me. I do not get on myself about it with two young kids, but you are light years ahead of me – it’s just a light to my feet. I will get there and you have detailed my wishes and future actions for how to be a wellness mama! Thank you!!!

    Blessings to you and yours!

Katie, thank you so much for this post. I think it’s the best blog post I’ve ever read. I like this side of Katie ;). Selfishly so. I go to your blog regularly for motivation, recipes, reminders that I’m not the only one striving to live as healthfully as possible, but honestly sometimes I leave the blog feeling like a complete failure. I currently have one little one- and don’t seem to do even a smidgen of what you seem to accomplish. I became so burnt out (and found out I had mercury poisoning) that I decided to eat out for an entire week. Terribly unhealthy in a way, but so very healthy for my stress level and sanity. And I never understood why bloggers don’t delete all negative comments. Not only are they sad for the blogger, but for the readers that are following for a reason. If it were mine I would just delete delete to keep a healthy happy environment. Seems less authentic? Maybe, but I think it keeps the integrity of the space -healthy/happy. I am enjoying your cookbook immensely and if u ever want to do another (I know- too soon 😉 I would love all your wellness specific stuff all in one place- in print.
Thank you so much for all you are and all you do,
    Many blessings and Happy Holidays

I have the same thoughts as you on advertisements. I personally do not want them on my site for the same reasons: feeling that I would be selling out. When I started my blog – a year and a half ago – it was meant to always be about God, the relationship with Jesus, and sharing His truth. I did a lot of research on blogs and bloggers. I saw how much content was in so many blogs that got tons of followers. I turned some of the everyday things I am passionate about into a blog post. I had fun, but it got to a point where I was so concerned with ‘keeping up’ that I began to loose site of what my blog was about – God and the message of Jesus! When I realized I was looking at the moments of my life as spiritual blog posts, recounting events in the form of how to write them, I realized I was missing out on what God was saying to me in those moments. I took a step back. I refocused on my spiritual well-being, and put the blog site back into His hands. Now, I post when He calls me. Now, I forget about the page views and the perception I had of what posts people want to see. It’s not about that for me, it’s about God leading people to my site as He sees fit. And He will do with the readers as He chooses. I just have to ‘hold the pen’ that day. I truly love your site. I love and appreciate your authenticity. No one is perfect. We don’t have to be – Jesus is! So, I say, be true to yourself, and you will be true to your family and your readers. You are clearly a woman immersed in love, and that is how to be the best mother to your children. Thank you for sharing your raw emotions and thoughts on this post. You are amazing!

    Katie,

You work hard to keep this blog and share the information you use for your family. In the past decade (or almost two), the face of journalism has changed in such a way that allows people like yourself to create these spaces where people come regularly and read what you have to say. I absolutely believe that you could put an ad for a product you truly endorse, and believe in, and nothing bad will happen. This is not selling out. This is simply making money in the most sincere and respectable manner possible, for which I applaud you. And in fact, if my visiting to your site can help you generate an income that you can use for your children’s education, creating other content, or simply going on vacation to get a well-deserved break, I would be extremely happy to contribute.

Sometimes, I am reminded that I need certain items when I see relevant ads, or simply get inspired. Or, Genevieve from mamanatural started putting ads in her videos – do you call her a sell-out? I certainly don’t. Nor will I stop visiting her website.

In terms of the kind of info I’d like to see more from you, I prefer to see more of the application/hands-on (e.g. how to make this, or that..). I certainly appreciate your thorough research on pretty much every topic but I am certainly not here for the scientific explanations (for that, I go to Sarah from paleomom). I know you do your very best, but you are also not a specialist, so I always take it with a grain of salt (university does that to you).

So, to reiterate, be true to yourself, and this will shine through each of your posts. An intelligent person understands that we all need to make a living. Don’t be shy to do this in one of the most respectable manners possible. The people who truly appreciate you will understand and support you.

I don’t feel like it is selling out to display ads on your website. I (and all of us!) know how dedicated you are to providing us with information you genuinely feel is healthy and helpful to us. I already know that any ads you’d display on your website would be for companies and products you felt would make our lives easier and healthier. I say: Go ahead and display them! They wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

  14. Jennifer Avatar

Hello – I am not sure how the blogging world works “in the backdrop” but if having a few more ads means making more money to support your family and your passions, I would say go for it. I agree with you when you say that you would rather not have ads up that don’t support what you believe in to the fullest. Pick the ads that support what you believe in and make sure that your pages aren’t inundated with garbage so that your message can still shine through.

Katie, I’ve never commented on your posts before, but really feel the need to this time. Thank you for sharing! As a fellow blogger I can identify with some of the things you are saying. I’ve just started out and am not far AT ALL, but have wrestled through some of the things you talk about. For example, I’ve struggled in knowing how to communicate “my voice” without simply copying other recipes, tips, etc… Part of my solution is to take the ideas and change/tweak them to make them my own, and link back to something, depending on what it was, but the bigger piece is communicating the “real me”, which distinguishes me (or YOU) from every other blogger out there. I agree with you, there is so much perfectionism exhibited online and it’s simply impossible to do in real life what is represented online….so, I’d encourage you to share more of who you are…the real Katie. 🙂 (And, I think you are already being real & very vulnerable!). As far as your question of courses, etc.., I think you would create great resources and I would most likely buy them, but I do struggle with overload of material. There is so much out there and I can’t possibly digest it all…I’ve started ignoring some bundles and summits that look great simply b/c it’s overload and I can’t handle more! So make your family first and if it means blogging less and producing less, oh well! I wouldn’t think any less of you for stepping back. At the same time, though, your blog has been an inspiration and encouragement to me. I appreciate the ideas and tips. Thank you, Katie! 🙂

    1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

No, my opinion of Wellness Mama would not change because I know of the integrity of your blog now, and I could see it reflected in the ads you chose to allow. My only request is that the ads are located in out-of-the-way places on your posts. For example, the right-hand sidebar. I have seen many bloggers who let ads sit right smack in the middle of their posts and I almost never make it all the way through their posts because I too hate ads.

    2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

I would greatly prefer the raw, uncensored Katie.

    3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you? What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

One of my biggest struggles in striving for a healthier lifestyle was knowing where to start. Although I am now moving in the right direction, I was really lost when I started out. I would suggest creating an educational series for people like me who did not know what direction to take and ended up taking some wrong, and harmful, turns along the way.

Hi Katie, thank you for such a wonderful resource. Your blog has helped me so much this year. With your information and testimonials, I was encouraged to take the leap and do the hard work of overhauling my family’s food choices. We are all doing better and I am so thankful to you and your generosity in sharing your work with us here.

I’m a homeschooling mom of 3 littles and have struggled with my own health issues. My heart goes out to you because I have a bit of an idea of what you have been going through. I can’t imagine adding the blog to all of it. Thank you for the sacrifices you have made for us readers!

I hope this outpouring of appreciation and encouragement from all your readers will wash away some of the negative aspects of blogging that have burdened you. I also hope that you will be lifted up and receive it as a confirmation from us that we fully support you, your health, your own family, too.

I appreciate your heart to be “real” and transparent with us. You are kind to offer such honesty. Don’t feel like you have to be the real raw Katie all the time for our sakes, though. We are all dealing with our own rawness and our kids’ rawness, and well sometimes it’s just nice to take a break and go read your excellent blog. I’m not saying never be real, just don’t feel like you have to totally change everything. You’ve got a great thing going already. I appreciate that you are in trenches with us 🙂

As for ads, if they are not intrusive or inappropriate, I say go for it. Take care of yourself and your family and go build that nonprofit!

In the meantime, know that Jesus loves you and He is the perfect one for you. Please take that burden off of yourself. He is the only One who can be perfect and He doesn’t expect that from you. Matt. 11:28-30.

    Grace and Peace to you,
    Caroline

    Hi,
I stumbled across your site for the first time last week when I was looking for a recipe for home-made detergent. I liked what I saw on your site; your passion and commitment comes through and is much appreciated. I’m 55, no kids, but trying to lead a healthier life.

I decided to try my hand at the lotion bars, and used your links to the supplier of the ingredients; I hope you do get something back from them (Mountain Rose Herbs). You should be compensated for what you do, and as long as you are clear and upfront, I can’t see why anyone would have a problem with that. Keep up the good work!
