This week something happened that doesn’t happen often. I got mad. Not to say I don’t have bad days, but I rarely get in a pissed-off, mad-at-the-world mood. But this week I did.

Don’t get me wrong- I have days where I wish I kept my cool with my kids, or wish I stayed calm or got more done, but I don’t get truly angry very often.

I also typically try to keep my emotions in check, but today they were most definitely not and my poor husband had to bear the blunt end of my rant/venting session.

What made me mad?

The Dark Side of Blogging

Not my blog specifically (I love you guys, my readers, and I love to write) but the idea of blogging, the profession of blogging and all the things that happen behind the scenes that readers never see or hear about. The things that bloggers get sucked into and are forced to deal & compete with.

To preface, I should explain that the part that made me most angry is the perceived “selling out” of bloggers in various ways. This made me upset because I pride myself in writing ALL my own content, doing all my own research, making sure each article is super high quality and everything I ever link to, suggest or promote are products I personally use and love.

It makes me mad when I see other bloggers not extending their readers the same courtesy.

Here’s the thing…

From the outside, health bloggers often appear to be perfect human beings who cook gourmet meals three times a day, have impeccable style, washboard abs, and an incredible personality. We aren’t (at least not all of those things all the time).

Think about the pictures posted on facebook or instragram. You put your best foot forward. So do bloggers, but many of us are even more “filtered” since we are potentially exposed to and judged by thousands of people each day.

I sincerely hope that no mom ever comes to my blog and feels like she isn’t good enough because it seems like I “do it all” or “am a great mom all the time.” I assure you I’m not. I have laundry baskets full of clothes in my bedroom right now and yesterday’s clothes are still on the floor. We’ve eaten organic hotdogs three times this week because the Wellness Mama Cookbook (and dealing with Amazon) has taken over my life.

I don’t always cook three meals a day. Occasionally, I order Pete’s Paleo or from a local Japanese restaurant out of sheer convenience.

I don’t always make my own detergent and cleaning supplies. Sometimes it’s just easier (and saves time) to buy (natural) products at the store or online.

Sometimes I cry because of comments I receive on my blog or facebook (sometimes happy tears, but usually tears of sadness, hurt, or pain). I’m very much not a perfect mom. Nor a perfect human.

I blog to share things that have made my life easier or better and to hopefully help other moms, but I hope that everything I write encourages and uplifts and never makes another woman feel like she isn’t doing enough or isn’t good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way- trust me…. you are good enough. You are doing enough. You are a great mom, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way lately is that your children, your family, need you. Imperfect, wonderful, you.

Back to Blogging Though…

Certain things I’ve seen in the blogging world lately have really upset me because I felt like they crossed that line with their readers. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bloggers making money. But I do have a problem with:

  • I have a problem with bloggers making money in a non-genuine way at the expense of their readers.
  • I have a problem with incestuous back-room affiliate deals. I have a problem with “I’ll promote your product if you promote mine.”
  • I have a problem when people duplicate my blog exactly for themselves, the design, every post and picture on the site, strip out my affiliate links and add their own, then claim everything as theirs.
  • I have a problem when other sites pull every post and picture of mine to use for themselves… to get more traffic so they can charge more for ads.
  • I have a problem with people copying content (both my content and that of others), stealing ideas and writing in an unauthentic voice solely for the goal of pushing more content out to the search engines. This annoys me because it isn’t about Google. It is about you. The readers. I don’t write for Google, I write for you!
  • I have a problem with the 100+ emails I get a day from people asking me to promote their stuff to my “list” (the people who subscribe to my email newsletter)

I don’t have a “list.” I have readers. I have friends. I have you. And you are the most important part of blogging to me.

And you know what? I’m not the only one who feels this way about the dark side of blogging.

I’m extremely aware, appreciative and grateful every single day for the amazing community that has grown through Wellness Mama. It is so much bigger than me. It is a group. A sisterhood. A family of moms who quite literally have the power to change the world. I don’t take that lightly. It annoys me when I see bloggers in the industry who do.

For me, blogging is really about creating a change for our kids. It isn’t about the money (though if that happens, it is great since we have six kids to feed, clothe and put through college one day) but that isn’t the goal. It is about making a healthier future for my children so they have decades and decades of health after college and so I get to live long enough to meet and enjoy my grandchildren.

I like to think/hope that I don’t have the amazing community that has developed here because I’ve written good articles about certain topics, but because I care about you. Because I want an actual (online) relationship with you. Because I care about the future for your kids as much as for my own.

I don’t want to be a “celebrity” from blogging (as some bloggers seem to want). In fact, this would utterly terrify me and get me so far out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t know who I was anymore. My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.

Someone else could copy my writing, copy my posts, copy all my ideas, but it wouldn’t be the same because the passion isn’t there. Because the world doesn’t need another blog post about how to make lip balm or magnesium body butter (which I did invent, btw), but the world needs more passion. It needs more people who care. If that is you- I am forever grateful for you… really! If you are passionate about your own goals, your own life, your own family and their health… you are changing the world more than the bloggers you see making tons of money and looking perfect on Instagram.

Because here is the deal… at the end of the day, it isn’t about me (and I’m super glad it isn’t!). I don’t use my last name. Not because I’m ashamed of it or have something to hide, but because it isn’t important (and because I value privacy for those six small children I mentioned). And because the movement, the “wellness mama idea”, is so much bigger than me.

I’m here because I want to make a change, not become famous.

My Blogging Struggle

It takes an incredible amount of time to make Wellness Mama what it is. Researching for posts. Taking photographs. Writing. Editing. Moderating comments. Social media promotion & communication. Etc.

It costs a lot of money to keep it running. Design & development costs. Hosting. Upgraded servers when traffic grows. Premium plugins. Email service. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The list goes on.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I could implement ads with the click of a button and make much more money that would help support my family and help fund a charity I’ve wanted to start for a long time (to provide sustainable food and clean water worldwide and to help distribute leftover food from farmers markets to soup kitchens, schools and food banks), but I’ve never made the jump because I personally hate ads and feel this would be “selling out.”

I want to make sure I’m always focused on you, but sometimes I don’t know the best way to do this. I make sure I don’t use spammy tactics to try to sell you things you don’t need. I don’t white label products that I didn’t create to make money. I moderate every comment so that the community is an uplifting and healthy environment for you to learn. I prominently display my affiliate policy so that readers are aware of my quality standards, practices, and promotion requirements.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I’m very much imperfect. WellnessMama.com has grown beyond my greatest goals and expectations. The blog gets a lot of traffic and in turn makes money through some of the products and resources I recommend.

I still feel like a failure because I’m not the perfect mom or the perfect wife. I think we all do. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think any mom goes to bed feeling like she has the whole wife/mother thing under control. I know I don’t. In fact, every day, I stress because of this incredible community that I love so much. Because I don’t always look, act and behave the way a “perfect” mom should. I think we all do.

So- long story short. Thank YOU so much for reading. For putting up with my rant. For caring about your family and the future of our children and our world.

At the end of the day, I don’t give a damn about just having your email address on my list. I want you to actually adopt the healthy changes I write and email about. To put in the time. To make a lasting change for your family. To say that your family’s life has improved because of changes you made. That is what matters to me.

2014 has been a tough year in many ways. The blog has grown. A lot. But I’ve made mistakes. I promoted a course (against my intuition) for someone that wasn’t a good fit… because I was too competitive. I started promoting an essential oils company (against my better judgement) because I thought there was an opportunity to help some friends make money. I self published the original Wellness Mama Cookbook, even though I had numerous offers from traditional publishers for upfront advances. And it’s wreaked havoc on my thyroid condition.

At the same time, 2014 has been an incredibly wonderful and rewarding year and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I’ve made awesome friends who started as online friends and are now real life friends, like Heather, Genevieve, Emily, and Kelly (go check them out- they are amazing!). People like Sean, Steve & Jordan, Mary, and Christa. I finally found an amazing doctor who has helped me find answers for my thyroid struggles. And I finally finished writing my book!

My Pledge to You and a Question

So here is my pledge to you: I’m going to stop trying to be the “perfect” mom on the blog and social media. I’m going to stop stressing about answering every comment and start deleting those that don’t meet my requirements. I’m going to spend more time with family, even if that means I don’t post quite as often. I’m going to only create the most valuable, most helpful things I can and share those. I’m going to stop deleting posts because I feel like they aren’t good enough or might be met with resistance. I’m going to stop censoring my writing to meet the “squeaky clean Wellness Mama image” and let the real me shine through.

Because at the end of the day, I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

I feel inferior because I don’t look like Jennifer Aniston with the patience of June Cleaver and the culinary skills of Julia Childs. I feel imperfect because I don’t have 28 hours a day to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

In the coming weeks:

  • I’m going to be moving away from most “JV promotions” because they just don’t seem genuine to me.
  • I’m going to start creating more ebooks, courses, and products. Things that I enjoy doing and things that I wish I’d had when I started out…
  • I’m going to focus on creating more helpful and useful content for you.
  • I’m going to focus on enjoying my family and having balance and enjoying things more and stressing less.

This crazy world of blogging has led me to wrestle with several internal struggles lately, and rather than try to face them on my own, I figured I’d ask for your advice (it has never failed me before, so no pressure!).

I Want Your Opinion

1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?

4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

    1. I am totally okay with advertisers that are carefully chosen, and preferably not annoying! I don’t think this is selling out as long as the content and context of what you built stays the same and keeps it’s integrity. I for one appreciate your honesty of past promotional regrets!
    2. Be YOU! Just like the rest of us sometimes it’s dark and sometimes it’s bright and shiny. This is human. Personally, I have difficulty with what I consider “image crafting” and have found some of my mom friends to be more reliable as friends because of this than others. Basically I feel there is a bit of a slippery slope for us ALL when people project only perfection on social media. Again, I appreciate your honesty in regards to your own imperfections as a human being!
    3. Yes, yes and yes! I thoroughly enjoy what you offer here and often refer to the articles and recipes you provide! Thank you!

Love your blog and what you do! I actually appreciate your vendor links because I know from reading your blog that you are not the type of person to promote crap. Also, hosting isn’t free. I know-I have my own website and blog. You need to make money in order to continue what you do. I don’t blame you one bit if you have affiliate links that you get money from. It’s my decision whether or not I want to link up and order through that vendor link.
Also, people can be mean on the internet. Read the comments section on most news websites and you lose all your faith in humanity. Keep up what you do! 🙂

    Katie,

I come here because I REALLY like you and what you do. I am constantly telling people and loved ones about your blog and all the good things you share with us. I don’t feel trapped into buying certain things, but I appreciate when you link to the sources you really do use and trust. Thank you for that.

I wish I had known about you back when I had my five kids trying to raise them the best I could. You are so encouraging and I want to encourage you to keep up the good fight — doing the things you know in your heart that you need to do both with your family and your blog, as well as with the projects you want to do. I won’t tell you what I want because I really like you and your Wellness Mama blog just the way you are. Keep up the good work.

    Onward!

I love all that you do! I am greatful you do the work for me! I’ve loved your sight for a while now. I would not mind if you made $ through adds. It would make me happy and greatful for all the work you do. I always use your links for products I buy in hopes you get your (cut). I feel your worth getting it. And, I wouldn’t mind you being the real you! It’s time we stop trying to please everyone! Thanks for all you do! ????

Just continue to be honest and genuine. My family and friends have tried many of your suggestions just because we trust that you have tried and liked them yourself. Keep up the GOOD work!

I think you ROCK!!! Whenever I read negative comments on any of your posts… I get so mad! If someone is to disagree, then put it constructively at least, not insulting.

anyway, selling out: i feel bloggers sell out when they allow ads that the blogger doesn’t believe in or stand for. I feel you should have some ads on here to make your money but when the ads pop up from everywhere and make my page load for an hour… then I move on. I think you have done a great job with this.

I read blogs because I like to have a connection with a person giving advice. I can research info anywhere on line but it doesn’t have the friendly personality behind it. Its fun to get to know you and see how you really are… your faults, your joys, your personality. 🙂

I really like the ebook content you put out. Things we can buy and keep for ourselves but the recipes and such you post are also saved.

  7. Stephanie Avatar

Not sure if you can keep up with all these comments, but here’s one more just for that extra challenge. 😛

    1. I’d love to see a nutritional blogger NOT be perfect. I know it’d help people like my mom and sister greatly–those who try so hard to make positive choices for themselves & their families, then beat themselves up for the one or two times they “don’t do it right,” or “cheat.” It sends them on a spiral of self-doubt and criticism. If you want to be a spokesperson for men & women who do their best and are never perfect, I can’t encourage you enough.

    2. I’d love to be introduced to more ethical companies. I WANT to support them. I EXPECT that you are compensated for sending business their way. I hope you DO place ads on your blog for companies that meet your high standards.

    3. As far as products, courses and ebooks go, please follow your passions. It will be apparent in the quality of your work–and we all love to see quality work.

Thanks for all the research you do for all of us. Thanks for being a pioneer in the modern-traditional movement. I visit your site regularly and am never disappointed.

    Best of luck!

  8. Christina Avatar

Seems like you have your self a homegrown community of supporters! There were so many I had a hard time finding the “Join the Conversation”. I must say, it is AWESOME to see this many women encouraging another woman.

To answer your questions, here is my input:

    1. You are only a sell out when you start doing things strictly for money. No one can begrudge you wanting to make money to support your family, so long as your best intentions stand behind it.

    2. I want to see the real you. It makes me feel better knowing that I am not the only one who feels like I fall short on things, even though no one else may really notice. Even this post was reassuring to read. Thank you for your honesty.

    3. I like reading about the attainable stuff and since that varies for every reader I say write the spectrum of stuff! I am currently enjoying learning about nutrition and how food feeds your body in more ways than the tummy.

Thank you for your hard work!

  9. Mellisa Avatar

I am new to your blog, but I have never actually been into a blog until now either. I love how real you are, like someone I could really talk to and not be judged or be compared to. I value that. I am not perfect but I am trying and I am learning new and better ways to live for me and my family and doing so without the pressure of making mistakes. Thank you for your nonjudgmental blogging and for all your hard work researching and writing.

    Hi Katie,

I have never commented here before although I have been following your blog for a while and this post spurred me to speak up and provide my perspective on the questions you posed:
    1. Selling out….hmmm very subjective but what I can say is that you have proven your commitment and dedication to your readers and your content, as such there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking the opportunity to benefit financially through some affiliate advertisements – in fact if they are sources you use and products you endorse (as I am sure they would be) your readers would appreciate the easy link to trusted sources.
    2. Real Katie please! I will admit my only criticism of your blog would be the “June Cleaver-ness” of it all 🙂
    3. Resources are always great and if that is what you enjoy doing then do it! Trust your instincts and do what you love – when you do that you can’t go wrong 🙂

Anyhoo, that is my two cents for what it is worth.

  11. Patricia Avatar

Oops, I didn’t respond to your questions.
I don’t mind ads when they are about the blog and carefully selected. I especially like the links within the post. You will make good decisions about ads and when they don’t turn out, you will do something about it. You need to be compensated for your work and it in no way diminishes the quality of your blog – just the opposite.
Work on valuing yourself. Those of us who regularly read your blog value you, but, much more importantly, you need to value you. It will come. Keep working on it.
Give me your real, your authentic, your real, your opinions, your rants, your raves.

I really liked this post! I am almost a brand-new reader. I had stumbled across your blog when looking for homemade toothpaste recipes and bookmarked it to come back to later (and yes, evaluate whether I’d be a long-term reader or not).
After reading this post and some of the wonderful comments – you have won me over and I’ve subscribed!

So I’ll take my best crack at the advice you requested:
    1) I was actually really fascinated there weren’t advertisements on here. That is one of the first things I look at when evaluating a website and I couldn’t believe the depth and professionalism of the site with only Wellness Mama “advertisements”. Right or wrong, one thing that goes through my head is advertisements could indicate this person spends a lot of time on research and may not have another job so needs another source of income (a good thing!). Also right or wrong, I’ll form opinions on if the advertisements are too gimmicky or I see repeats across a bunch of different websites. I’m glad many of the comments agree that adding advertisements carefully is a good thing! Go for it!
    2) Since you won me over by this honest, transparent post, you must know I’ll vote for the “real” you!
    3) I have no opinion either way because I probably wouldn’t’ take advantage of courses or e-books

  13. Patricia Avatar

It takes courage to be authentic and you have that courage.
You commented that you went against your better judgement or your instincts on some things that didn’t turn out well. I have found that, as a person who analyzes everything, I’m much better off to trust my own judgement over what others are telling me; accept that I will be wrong sometimes, but it was my choice – I will learn from it and go on; ask myself, “Does this really make sense,” and “Does this seem reasonable?” Also, when someone is promoting something to you, explain to someone else the promotion and listen to yourself – when you’re telling it, does it make sense to you and can you explain it completely? If not, be careful – do not assume or let someone try and convince you that you’re not experienced enough or smart enough to understand this concept. Listen to yourself and trust yourself. There are lots worse things than someone thinking or calling you a bitch if you don’t accept their BS.
You are courageous to put yourself out there and there will always be haters and mean people; people who pretend to have all the answers. Let them be. If you know who you are – the good, the bad and the ugly – you’re doing what you’re passionate about, your on the right track. One of the positives about getting older is that, if you’re working on it, you continue to get more comfortable with who you are and you care less and less about the nay-sayers.
    Trust yourself.
These are some quotes that I think are good to remember:
“What screws us up most in life is the picture in our head of how its suppose to be.”
“The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
“She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails.”
“I love the person I’ve become because I fought to become her.”
“Bitches get things done.” – Tina Fey
“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that’s why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan
Best of luck on your journey.

    Hi Katie,

I had just started following your blog about half a year ago. YOU ARE AMAZING! I have learned so much about true wellness and better natural options for around the house. It’s hard to find someone/a blog with honest, helpful information; so many blogs/articles/etc. are hard to believe because one article will say this and the next will say the opposite! With your posts, I find that my gut opinion trusts in the information you are providing. That being said, I definitely love and care about how much your readers mean to you! Thanks! 🙂
    I’ll answer your questions now,
1- I do not mind if you decide to allow advertisers on your page, because I would love to be introduced to new products and pages that YOU deem worthy! I have been introduced to so many great products and pages because of all of your links included in your posts.
2- I would LOVE to see more of the “raw, uncensored Katie”!! At one point (I have to admit) I was amazed at how your life was so put together and healthy! Thank you for reminding us readers that you most definitely are human and do slip-up and make mistakes too! 😉 I would definitely love to read posts that are more YOU. I do, however, love reading the super healthy posts that help me strive to be a healthier and better person.
3- I would love to see more courses, ebooks, and products from you! That would be exciting to involve readers in “health challenges” that we can all comment in on/provide motivation etc. I’m not exactly sure what new information you should do, because I get my ideas from you! 🙂 Just keep on including this good information! You have already done such a great job providing simple answers, I don’t believe there is ANYTHING you need to change about that!

And remember, this is YOUR blog, in the end, you make the decision to include the information YOU want. If including/not including some information makes you a less happy person, DON’T DO IT. Do what makes you happy! 🙂

Thank you for everything you do, for being a trusted source, and for being HUMAN!! 🙂

Thank you so much for your work, Katie. Your blog is my very favorite health blog! The layout, presentation, and photos throughout your site are simple and just perfect. I have always appreciated that while you recommend particular products, I never felt that I was being “advertised to” while reading your blog.

  16. Jai Avatar

    Hi Katie,

I have been reading a lot of blogs recently and I have to say yours remains my favourite.
I can’t tell you how empowering it feels to be able to take charge of my health, down to the level of making my own cosmetics – money cannot buy how happy that makes me:)
So I just wanted to say thank you, for being yourself – in whatever form you feel like.
And that I would not be at all perturbed by discrete ads on the side – especially to ethically sourced and sustainable small companies that you have found and recommend. For example, I’ve really enjoyed reading about Mountain Rose Herbs and their products (which I found via your site), and that just seemed an extension of this wonderful revolution of actually thinking about what we are buying and using and eating and putting on our skin that you so beautifully inspire.
It’s true that there are a lot of other blogs out there, but the other side to the internet is that we can be discerning as readers, and nothing works like word of mouth.
The quality and integrity of your blog will ensure that it remains a shining star in that murky internet sea, and one that is only growing brighter.
    Thank you from Africa:)

    Katie,
I love this. You be you. I trust your posts. I use so many of your ideas in my home. I just bought your cookbook, and LOVE it. I feel like God has given you an amazing platform, and the best way you can serve your family, the public, and him is to be Authentic!

None of us are perfect, and I get “pissed off” all the time. The important thing is where we focus. I focus on my faith and family with a love of non toxic, healthy living. I will be praying for you and yours! Happy Thanksgiving!!

I appreciate your honesty and willingness to share your frustrations. You’re right when it’s easy to forget that everyone has their shortcomings when so much on the internet is everyone’s best angle. I think it is refreshing to be reminded that we are all so similar and those who do enjoy your blog are likely very similar to each other and yourself. I found you through your talk at the Real Food Con a few years ago and am so glad I did! I’ve been on my own journey toward wellness in a more holistic manner for a few years now and find your website to be an invaluable resource! Thanks for all the hard work you put in, I know that your fan base trusts you because of your authenticity and research. Keep doing what feels best for you and the blog will follow suit! I can say that a few “real you” posts now and then would be interesting, and I’m totally against ads, if they are curated to the blog and are products the blogger believes in. We all have jobs to make money to live our lives, it’s not different for bloggers, but I doubt you have a few ads or affiliate inks will turn you into one of those crappy blogs that are overrun with ads and promotions. Either way, I’m still tuning in as usual!

    1. Shelby Avatar

**I’m NOT totally against ads. Sorry, that’s a pretty important typo. 😛

  19. Michelle Avatar

Katie, I may be halfway across the globe from you (I’m a Filipina) but as a blogger myself and freelance copywriter, I am well aware of the selling out tactics being done by capricious health bloggers around. At the end of the day, readers can instinctively discern authenticity and integrity. Continue being your truthful self and never mind those who do not embrace your values. You will attract your kindred spirits that way.

  20. Kristin Avatar

Good job on not editing the numbers (3., 2., 3.) for your three questions. That’s in line, I think, with not needing to be squeaky clean Katie! I much prefer an unedited, imperfect (though not sloppy – yes, it is a balancing act) image. In fact, I found Renee Airya of “Flip Your Flaws” to be especially appealing during Cynthia Pasquella’s Summit. Witnessing someone’s vulnerability and peace with their imperfection is liberating, and, more importantly, action compelling. Instead of just feeling admiration for another person’s apparent lifestyle and choices, an unedited and imperfect version of someone helps me to I feel like I’m worthy just as I am and I can be brave too! I say, move in that direction.
