This week something happened that doesn’t happen often. I got mad. Not to say I don’t have bad days, but I rarely get in a pissed-off, mad-at-the-world mood. But this week I did.

Don’t get me wrong- I have days where I wish I kept my cool with my kids, or wish I stayed calm or got more done, but I don’t get truly angry very often.

I also typically try to keep my emotions in check, but today they were most definitely not and my poor husband had to bear the blunt end of my rant/venting session.

What made me mad?

The Dark Side of Blogging

Not my blog specifically (I love you guys, my readers, and I love to write) but the idea of blogging, the profession of blogging and all the things that happen behind the scenes that readers never see or hear about. The things that bloggers get sucked into and are forced to deal & compete with.

To preface, I should explain that the part that made me most angry is the perceived “selling out” of bloggers in various ways. This made me upset because I pride myself in writing ALL my own content, doing all my own research, making sure each article is super high quality and everything I ever link to, suggest or promote are products I personally use and love.

It makes me mad when I see other bloggers not extending their readers the same courtesy.

Here’s the thing…

From the outside, health bloggers often appear to be perfect human beings who cook gourmet meals three times a day, have impeccable style, washboard abs, and an incredible personality. We aren’t (at least not all of those things all the time).

Think about the pictures posted on facebook or instragram. You put your best foot forward. So do bloggers, but many of us are even more “filtered” since we are potentially exposed to and judged by thousands of people each day.

I sincerely hope that no mom ever comes to my blog and feels like she isn’t good enough because it seems like I “do it all” or “am a great mom all the time.” I assure you I’m not. I have laundry baskets full of clothes in my bedroom right now and yesterday’s clothes are still on the floor. We’ve eaten organic hotdogs three times this week because the Wellness Mama Cookbook (and dealing with Amazon) has taken over my life.

I don’t always cook three meals a day. Occasionally, I order Pete’s Paleo or from a local Japanese restaurant out of sheer convenience.

I don’t always make my own detergent and cleaning supplies. Sometimes it’s just easier (and saves time) to buy (natural) products at the store or online.

Sometimes I cry because of comments I receive on my blog or facebook (sometimes happy tears, but usually tears of sadness, hurt, or pain). I’m very much not a perfect mom. Nor a perfect human.

I blog to share things that have made my life easier or better and to hopefully help other moms, but I hope that everything I write encourages and uplifts and never makes another woman feel like she isn’t doing enough or isn’t good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way- trust me…. you are good enough. You are doing enough. You are a great mom, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way lately is that your children, your family, need you. Imperfect, wonderful, you.

Back to Blogging Though…

Certain things I’ve seen in the blogging world lately have really upset me because I felt like they crossed that line with their readers. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bloggers making money. But I do have a problem with:

  • I have a problem with bloggers making money in a non-genuine way at the expense of their readers.
  • I have a problem with incestuous back-room affiliate deals. I have a problem with “I’ll promote your product if you promote mine.”
  • I have a problem when people duplicate my blog exactly for themselves, the design, every post and picture on the site, strip out my affiliate links and add their own, then claim everything as theirs.
  • I have a problem when other sites pull every post and picture of mine to use for themselves… to get more traffic so they can charge more for ads.
  • I have a problem with people copying content (both my content and that of others), stealing ideas and writing in an unauthentic voice solely for the goal of pushing more content out to the search engines. This annoys me because it isn’t about Google. It is about you. The readers. I don’t write for Google, I write for you!
  • I have a problem with the 100+ emails I get a day from people asking me to promote their stuff to my “list” (the people who subscribe to my email newsletter)

I don’t have a “list.” I have readers. I have friends. I have you. And you are the most important part of blogging to me.

And you know what? I’m not the only one who feels this way about the dark side of blogging.

I’m extremely aware, appreciative and grateful every single day for the amazing community that has grown through Wellness Mama. It is so much bigger than me. It is a group. A sisterhood. A family of moms who quite literally have the power to change the world. I don’t take that lightly. It annoys me when I see bloggers in the industry who do.

For me, blogging is really about creating a change for our kids. It isn’t about the money (though if that happens, it is great since we have six kids to feed, clothe and put through college one day) but that isn’t the goal. It is about making a healthier future for my children so they have decades and decades of health after college and so I get to live long enough to meet and enjoy my grandchildren.

I like to think/hope that I don’t have the amazing community that has developed here because I’ve written good articles about certain topics, but because I care about you. Because I want an actual (online) relationship with you. Because I care about the future for your kids as much as for my own.

I don’t want to be a “celebrity” from blogging (as some bloggers seem to want). In fact, this would utterly terrify me and get me so far out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t know who I was anymore. My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.

Someone else could copy my writing, copy my posts, copy all my ideas, but it wouldn’t be the same because the passion isn’t there. Because the world doesn’t need another blog post about how to make lip balm or magnesium body butter (which I did invent, btw), but the world needs more passion. It needs more people who care. If that is you- I am forever grateful for you… really! If you are passionate about your own goals, your own life, your own family and their health… you are changing the world more than the bloggers you see making tons of money and looking perfect on Instagram.

Because here is the deal… at the end of the day, it isn’t about me (and I’m super glad it isn’t!). I don’t use my last name. Not because I’m ashamed of it or have something to hide, but because it isn’t important (and because I value privacy for those six small children I mentioned). And because the movement, the “wellness mama idea”, is so much bigger than me.

I’m here because I want to make a change, not become famous.

My Blogging Struggle

It takes an incredible amount of time to make Wellness Mama what it is. Researching for posts. Taking photographs. Writing. Editing. Moderating comments. Social media promotion & communication. Etc.

It costs a lot of money to keep it running. Design & development costs. Hosting. Upgraded servers when traffic grows. Premium plugins. Email service. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The list goes on.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I could implement ads with the click of a button and make much more money that would help support my family and help fund a charity I’ve wanted to start for a long time (to provide sustainable food and clean water worldwide and to help distribute leftover food from farmers markets to soup kitchens, schools and food banks), but I’ve never made the jump because I personally hate ads and feel this would be “selling out.”

I want to make sure I’m always focused on you, but sometimes I don’t know the best way to do this. I make sure I don’t use spammy tactics to try to sell you things you don’t need. I don’t white label products that I didn’t create to make money. I moderate every comment so that the community is an uplifting and healthy environment for you to learn. I prominently display my affiliate policy so that readers are aware of my quality standards, practices, and promotion requirements.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I’m very much imperfect. WellnessMama.com has grown beyond my greatest goals and expectations. The blog gets a lot of traffic and in turn makes money through some of the products and resources I recommend.

I still feel like a failure because I’m not the perfect mom or the perfect wife. I think we all do. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think any mom goes to bed feeling like she has the whole wife/mother thing under control. I know I don’t. In fact, every day, I stress because of this incredible community that I love so much. Because I don’t always look, act and behave the way a “perfect” mom should. I think we all do.

So- long story short. Thank YOU so much for reading. For putting up with my rant. For caring about your family and the future of our children and our world.

At the end of the day, I don’t give a damn about just having your email address on my list. I want you to actually adopt the healthy changes I write and email about. To put in the time. To make a lasting change for your family. To say that your family’s life has improved because of changes you made. That is what matters to me.

2014 has been a tough year in many ways. The blog has grown. A lot. But I’ve made mistakes. I promoted a course (against my intuition) for someone that wasn’t a good fit… because I was too competitive. I started promoting an essential oils company (against my better judgement) because I thought there was an opportunity to help some friends make money. I self published the original Wellness Mama Cookbook, even though I had numerous offers from traditional publishers for upfront advances. And it’s wreaked havoc on my thyroid condition.

At the same time, 2014 has been an incredibly wonderful and rewarding year and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I’ve made awesome friends who started as online friends and are now real life friends, like Heather, Genevieve, Emily, and Kelly (go check them out- they are amazing!). People like Sean, Steve & Jordan, Mary, and Christa. I finally found an amazing doctor who has helped me find answers for my thyroid struggles. And I finally finished writing my book!

My Pledge to You and a Question

So here is my pledge to you: I’m going to stop trying to be the “perfect” mom on the blog and social media. I’m going to stop stressing about answering every comment and start deleting those that don’t meet my requirements. I’m going to spend more time with family, even if that means I don’t post quite as often. I’m going to only create the most valuable, most helpful things I can and share those. I’m going to stop deleting posts because I feel like they aren’t good enough or might be met with resistance. I’m going to stop censoring my writing to meet the “squeaky clean Wellness Mama image” and let the real me shine through.

Because at the end of the day, I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

I feel inferior because I don’t look like Jennifer Aniston with the patience of June Cleaver and the culinary skills of Julia Childs. I feel imperfect because I don’t have 28 hours a day to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

In the coming weeks:

  • I’m going to be moving away from most “JV promotions” because they just don’t seem genuine to me.
  • I’m going to start creating more ebooks, courses, and products. Things that I enjoy doing and things that I wish I’d had when I started out…
  • I’m going to focus on creating more helpful and useful content for you.
  • I’m going to focus on enjoying my family and having balance and enjoying things more and stressing less.

This crazy world of blogging has led me to wrestle with several internal struggles lately, and rather than try to face them on my own, I figured I’d ask for your advice (it has never failed me before, so no pressure!).

I Want Your Opinion

1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?

4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

Katie, I just wanted to encourage you to continue to be transparent and real. I know it is hard to do. I am new to your blog via the Wellness Media Summit, which I liked vey much, so I am not totally familiar with all you offer on this blog, but what I have read has been very informative. It seems to me that you have pretty good instincts (even if you may have not followed them at times in the past) so I think you know what your friends would want in content and books. Advice on getting our children on board with eating this whole food lifestyle and ways to accomplish it on a very tight budget would be great. In the short time I have been visiting you blog you have given me some wonderful ideas. Spend time with your family to recharge yourself, as much as you need, after my relationship with God, my family is my most important “activity” in my life, it is so crucial to raise our children to be healthy and to enjoy the wonderful things God has provided for us. Keep up the great work, I greatly appreciate it. Oh, Advertising, the less the better as far as I am concerned, but if you have used the products and recommend them, then I hVe no problems with them being there.

I just found your website tonight and I am burning up my printer printing the great recipes. I am just beginning the process of changing the way my family (and the pets!) eat and need recipes for things the kids will eat and info about changing our lifestyle to be more natural in all aspects. This is a daunting task for me as I wasn’t taught to eat or live this way. Its nice to not have to hop from website to website trying to find the info I seek.

I think you should just be yourself- raw as you put it. It shows you are a human and not some group of people or corporation writing as an individual.

I appreciate adds that help me locate quality products such as the link you posted for Mountain Rose Herbs. I am so excited to start shopping there. I love herbs and spices so I want to try some new ones in cooking and try some others in making natural products. I would not care to see links to business like ToysRUs or Walmart, etc. We all know they exist and would not need a reminder.

As I am just learning about a natural lifestyle, I am interested in all kinds of courses. I am trying to learn about essential oils, herbs for medicinal purposes, clean eating, etc.

Thanks for having this blog. I can wait to read more on your site. I have been up most of the night reading on-it is so addictive!

First time commenter here. Your blog is great. If you were to place ads from sources you trust, on the side of the blog, I would not have an issue with it. It’s the pop ups that are tacky. I love Mountain Rose herbs, and get my elderberries there ever since last year when I read about your elderberry syrup. It’s nice to have trusted sources out there in cyber land, and if you vouch for a source, I would feel safe in knowing that their product is “organic” or whatever it was I wanted.

As for those who copy-get a blank cease and desist letter from an attorney, and use it when people copy. As an online seller, I know people who are constantly copied, and that’s what they use. Also bear in mind that people copy because they can’t create, so I feel some sadness for them-however briefly. LOL!

Keep up the wonderful work. I blog (about gemstones), and I will spend a day or so, writing the blogs and saving them in a document, then copying them to my blog, and scheduling my blog posts for the month. It makes life a little easier.

“My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.” I LOVE THAT : D

And I would be furious if my words were being shamelessly plagiarized, too!

I think you should do what makes YOU happy – one, you deserve to do exactly that and two i think that’s what we all want to see anyway, someone real, someone sharing it all. That’s what makes you beautiful.

  5. Sallee Avatar

I like the raw Katie! And no, my opinion of your blog would not change if you added in affiliate links. Sometimes it is nice to get good recommendations! I think if people want to buy it, they will. If they don’t, they won’t but it is there for when they do. Thank you for being real Katie! You have great content.

  6. Elizabeth Avatar

    Katie,

I love your blog because you are so genuine and I trust that you have done the research that I don’t have time to do. If you recommend a product, I feel like I can buy it without worrying about anything.

If adding advertising allows you to make this a more lucrative business for your family, I say go for it! I come here for the content you write and could care less about what ads run down the side of the page. I say take advantage of the opportunity! I don’t see it as selling out, at all.

Did you ever see when Dooce started her site section “monetize the hate”? She had a section of her site where she posted all of her hate mail and mean comments (which were awful and hilarious) and then just littered it with advertising, thanking her nasty readers for the added money (which she donated to a charity). So funny… it’s not really on brand for you, plus you seem too sweet, but it was a hit with her true fans. 🙂

Those of us who love your blog would of course want you to do what’s best for you and your family.

    Love the cookbook, too!

  7. Hannah Avatar

I am hesitant to add another comment to the long list; you have such a huge base of supporters who love your blog. I recently began reading, and have implemented a lot of your suggestsions – magnesium, home-made toothpaste, coconut oil, gelatin, maca. They have made such a difference.

If you took all your blog posts and combined them into a book, I would buy it and keep it next to my other favorites. Your site is an amazing resource.

You do an incredible job at keeping up the blog. Better than most. I think the best thing you can do is slow down and enjoy your family. Your kids will never again be the ages they are now. I know nothing about your family life, but I know that with a lot of work on one’s plate, it can be easy to miss out on the simple pleasures of human existence. Relax. Breathe into each moment. You do not have to be superwoman to be amazing.

With lots of respect, and the best wishes,

    Hannah

This post was great to read through! I really appreciate you sharing with us your opinions and struggles, and it’s helped me to be informed about the life of bloggers.

    In terms of your questions:
    1. I personally hate ads, so I use an adblocker extension for Firefox so I never have to see them. Because of that, I wouldn’t care either away about you having ads or not. But if you do, please don’t pressure us into turning off our Adblockers, like a lot of websites do.
    2. As much or as little as you want, I’ll be reading either way.
    3. I always prefer physical books, so ebooks are of no interest to me. I look forward to getting a copy of your cookbook soon. 🙂

One last thing, if I may: You said, “[We’re] A sisterhood. A family of moms…” I just wanted to let you know that I’m a college-age male who’s very interested in health and wellness, and has helped get my family motivated about it too. I know most of your readership probably is moms, but I would really appreciate a shout-out sometime to your male readers. I’ve encountered this situation A LOT with all the blogs I read, and it makes me feel alienated.

Even so, I did really enjoy this article.

  9. Ashley N. Avatar

    1) I don’t think ads are selling out. We all know what they’re for, and you’re so genuine we know you hold yourself personally responsible for waphat you recommend to us so it would be fine. It’s not having ads that feels like selling out, it’s pushing them. Ads that flash or move – or follow me as I move down the page – are pretty annoying though. Just sayin’. 🙂

    2) Please be you. You’re exactly who we need (look how many people commented! It took me two minutes to scroll down this far!). It’s why we’re here. I subscribed yesterday and I’ve been devouring all the information I’ve found. Even before reading this post, I knew from your attitude about life, health, your children, and us you’re readers, that you were for real. This is extremely important to me, because I am for real, and I needed to know that for real people with for real little children and real – messy! – lives, could still make the jump from the mainstream expectation to being wholly well. You know what else I could tell without being told? That you’re not always sweet with your kids, that you sometimes plan an entire meal counting on an ingredient you didn’t realize you were out of, and that if I came over and my toddler tracked mud on the carpet before I could stop her, that you would laugh it off and help me clean it up. And we could still be friends. It is easier to get rid of the last of my sugar inspired by you, who would care about me and speak kindly to me even if I intended to keep it, than another blogger who joked or shamed at the uninitiated. You are the thing that makes Wellness Mama special. The real you is why we’re here. And if you can’t post as often? Your true fans will wait, and rejoice with you that you’very found and are defending your center.

    3) I would love to take a course for Wellness babies. People who want to “do the whole-food thing” some day, when finances look better. People who know where the gluten free section of the grocery store is but that’s it. What to do first, especially when finances are tight, and how long does it take to make the switch? I would love an ecourse or even book on that.

Loved your honesty. Thank you for letting us into your reality and helping us improve ours. Keep up the good work! (And look up Glennon Melton’s TED talk some time about how she learned that life is Brut-iful. It’s tough but one of my favorites.) Thank you!

You are a constant that I can read, use and believe. Please keep being you in whatever form that is, whether squeaky clean or raw Kate. You have so much to offer for many of us longing for a healthier lifestyle. I repeatedly come back to you for recipes and ideas. If you added ads for the sake of money with your best judgement I would still come back to you for recipes and ideas. Follow your passion!!

Katie, this is why I love your blog, because you are personal, down to earth and real. You NEVER felt like that perfect, impossible to emulate wife/mother while at the same time you have inspired me tremendously to improve the health of my family and home every day. I love to learn new things, absolutely LOVE your simple and whole recipes, but most of all, I love to read about another mom with the same ideals and how she manages… or doesn’t manage… like me.

  12. Georgette Avatar

I love the way you do things, the way they are, the real you is great, I think you will do what is right for you and that in turn will be right for us. I find so many things that are great for me and I no longer have little ones at home but am in my senior years. Love what you do, keep up the good work

  13. Jill Avatar

    Katie,

I love your blog and originally I wasn’t going to post how I felt. But I’ve thought about it ever since this post went up and it won’t leave me alone. I’m not upset anymore, just a little sad.

Believe me, none of us are perfect, and if anyone here expected you to be, that’s their problem. But it really upset me that you say you promoted some essential oils “against your better judgment” to help friends make money. I assume you’re talking about DoTerra. I initially had qualms about the company due to their marketing structure and the accusations that they lie about their sourcing. But when I found your post saying that it’s the ONLY brand you’ll use, I thought, Katie can’t afford to throw money away on trash and she’s always said she’ll never promote a product unless she believes in it completely. Now, maybe you really do use DoTerra and believe it’s the best, and anyway, it was up to me to go with my own gut feeling. Yet you did say that promotion was against your better judgment, so I guess not. I’m just glad I didn’t have the money at the time to invest in the kit, because I would have assumed I was using your affiliate code, not a friend of yours. With all your great blog content, I would have thought it was only fair to buy through DT instead of aftermarket so you could get a tiny bit back. But I don’t owe anything to some random person, and it makes me so sad that you set up an expectation that you would never promote anything for the wrong reason and then abused that trust.

I still love coming here and seeing all your great ideas. But from now on every time I see an affiliate link or a specific product recommended, I’ll always have to wonder whether it’s completely legitimate or whether…I’m helping some friends make money. I would almost change brands just out of spite at that point. I also won’t ever feel safe purchasing anything, like books or subscriptions that you post about (although I’m planning to buy the cookbook because that’s all you and, well, it’s food–food is safe). I know you didn’t set out to hurt anyone, but the end result is still mistrust. 🙁

    1. Katie - Wellness Mama Avatar

Hi Jill, I can see where you are coming from. I should have been more clear when I mentioned that. I did use doterra oils and still do, but I use other brands as well. I think they are good quality but I didn’t like the structure of the company or the constant debate with them and other companies. I did like that I potentially had the ability to help friends and family make an income as well while also getting oils I would use at home. I included that instance in the post because it was one of the very few times I wasn’t completely comfortable with a business type decision but I went ahead with it because I really wanted to be able to help others financially. I would never have promoted them, even for a short time, if I didn’t think that their oils were good, and I do personally use and vette out any products I mention. I hope that makes some sense and helps you understand where I’m coming from. I was already using their oils and had several friends who were trying to grow the business side and I wanted to help them if I could since I was already using the oils. Thanks for reading and for taking the time to comment!

    Awww sweat heart,
Do your blog how ever it will suit you best and how you can get the most happiness out of it. You are well loved by so many people! I am new to your site and just wish I had at least half of the information when my family was young. They are all grown up now. But still, better to start clean at age 60 then never.
    You inspire so many people.
I just got your recipe book. Its lovely.
I do have one question if some time down the road you have a chnace to answer. It may be on your blog some where as I have not read every thing yet. So much wonderful info! I was wondering about using dried beans, lentils… Are they like a grain?
You have a wonderful evening and take some time to take care of your self.
    love to you

  15. Julie Avatar

I like that your blog is so “clean”, i.e. not full of advertisements I couldn’t care less about. It is “simple”, just like your tag line. I also like that you do recommend where to find various ingredients in your recipes (it saves me time). If you’re making money from these contacts, good for you. I can always shop elsewhere if I want – is that a new concept or something? Whatever is good for you is fine with me. I don’t care what other people say or think, and neither should you!

  16. Melissa Avatar

Katie-Your blog is well done. Every recipe for food or beauty products that I have tried of yours has turned out beautifully. I appreciate that because I realize you have actually made the recipe too and the post is genuine. I find it frustrating when I visit several blogs that are all advertising the same group of e-books , etc. I don’t mind ads on the sides of blogs but I dislike ads disguised as blogposts. I think you might make more money selling a concrete product from your blog. Why not kits to make some of your beauty product recipes? A lot of people might enjoy getting a kit because they wouldn’t have to hunt down hard to find products or buy a 10 pound bag of something they just need a little of. Designing a kit that ships affordably would be the hardest part.

  17. Libby Avatar

You are awesome! LOVE this post. It is very refreshing!

    1. I think you deserve to make money. In my opinion I think ads are fine as long as its not in-congruent with your mission.
    2. I love the raw unfiltered stuff.
    3. You really cannot go wrong with whatever you do as long as you’re happy. Do what makes you happy and brings you the most joy 😉

    Thanks for all you do!

What’s this about not being pefect? Exactly as you are… that’s perfect. So you got challenges? Me too. Perfect. You find you want to improve? Me too. Perfect. Remember to breathe!

There is a reason you are the only blog I subscribe to, so don’t be beating yourself up with any misplaced sense of inadequacy.

    Regarding your questions:
    1) I value you highly enough to want you to be well rewarded for your contribution. If that means a bit of advertising, go for it. It’s great to give from abundance, and it is not responsible to sacrifice yourself. Get paid – you are worth it.

    2) Real as. Personally I do no holds barred honesty, and probably a public blog works better with a little discretion… Real works for me. Genuine works for me. Human works for me. Be yourself.

    3) In a near infinite web, there is someone catering for everything, so you choose. Do what you are passionate about. That feeds you best, gets you writing at your best, and shows more inspiring passion for the things you are striving for. That works. If I really need a bergamot scented screenwash for my car, I’ll tap it into a search engine and find one. You write what inspires you.

Blessings on your work, blessings for your health.

    Raven
