When I was pregnant with my first child, I was given literally 11 bottles of baby lotion by friends and relatives. The smell reminded me of my own childhood and I loved that it was a lotion specially formulated for baby. I figured all of the ingredients must be natural and safe since it was for babies after all… and then I actually read the ingredients.

What’s in Baby Lotion?

I wondered why things like propylene glycol, parabens, artificial fragrances, synthetic waxes, and petroleum-based oils were considered safe for children. Turns out, they aren’t considered safe for children and the products I’d been given had a hazard rating of 5-6 on the EWG website and had “moderate risk of allergies and immunotoxicity as well as reproductive and developmental toxins.

I definitely wasn’t going to put that on my baby, so I started looking for natural options. I found some great ones, but also found out that most of them were pretty expensive.

Baby Balm Skin Cream Recipe

I decided to try to make my own from all natural, food safe ingredients and this ended up being less expensive for me anyway since I had many of these ingredients on hand for my homemade lotion bars and other homemade beauty products.

Choosing Natural Ingredients

Instead of propylene glycol, parabens and synthetic ingredients, I wanted to find all-natural ingredients to put on my baby’s skin and I wanted them to even be safe enough to eat!

I decided to use:

I loved that this recipe is completely oil-based with shelf stable ingredients. Since no liquid is added, it has an indefinite shelf life and will last for months or years. It takes a few minutes to absorb in to skin and only a tiny bit is needed. I’ve had friends say that this was incredibly helpful for eczema and skin problems as well.

Baby Balm Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup cocoa butter (or 32 cocoa butter wafers)
  • 1/4 cup shea butter
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon castor oil
  • Essential oils of choice. I used 15 drops each of Frankincense, Myrrh, Chamomile and Rose.

Baby Balm Instructions

  1. Heat all ingredients (except essential oils) in a double boiler or in a glass jar or bowl over a small pan of boiling water.
  2. Stir carefully until melted.
  3. Remove from heat and add essential oils if using.
  4. Pour in to a glass jar for storage.
  5. Use a small amount as needed for baby’s skin (or adult skin)

Hi! I see other people posted this question also, but it was never answered. I made this and it never solidified… It stayed very liquidy. So I added coconut oil and remelted… Didn’t help. Any suggestions?

In order for coconut oil to stay solidified, it needs to be kept in a cool dark place. That may be part of the problem. Hope that helps 🙂

I found two baby lotion/balm recipes you have online. Which is recommended? This recipe or the lotion? I see Whats the difference with usage?

    The other lotion recipe:

1/2 cup almond or olive oil
    1/4 cup coconut oil
    1/4 cup beeswax
    1 tsp vitamin e oil
2 TBSP shea butter or cocoa butter
    essential oils

This recipe is much more creamy/balmy than the other recipe, which uses beeswax to bulk it up a bit. You may find that your baby’s delicate skin absorbs this balm more readily, but it’s really up to you which to make.

Is it necessary to use castor oil? Can it be eliminated? I also have grape seed oil, and other oils. Kinda looking to use what I have instead of buying more.
    Thank you,
    Melissa

I am interested in making this or your luxurious lotion recipe but have a question about smell. While I was pregnant I made my own body oils with a mixture of sunflower oil and others and by the end of my pregnancy my bed sheets as well as any shirts I wore on a regular basis had to be thrown away because of the rancid oil smell that would not wash out. Do you have any thoughts on that problem? Would this recipe do the same thing or does the fact that it’s made with butters help? Thanks so much!

I have the same question. My natural laundry soap can’t wash off the oils off my sheets and clothes.

Do you put ALL of the essential oils at one time… Or do you make a batch for each oil?

I made this used it for my newborn now I’m making another batch! I didn’t use any essential oils so every evening after his bath he smells like chocolate 🙂 thanks for the recipe

From what i understand babies shouldn’t be exposed to essential oils intil after 6-7 month old. I want to make a baby balm for a friends baby shower but do not want to use essential oils what do you recommend i use to give it a mild aroma without possible allergic reaction?

    Wellnessmama,
Would you recommend this over your Luxurious Homeade Lotion for a baby? If ao, why is it better? I was going to make some lotion for my friends baby (4 months old) and planned on making the Luxurious recipe as that’s what I make for our family…Thanks for your help.

Hi Katie, I want to make this ahead so when the baby comes, I won’t have to stress about it. Now I know you said it can last year’s x but being that it is oil, is there a possibility that it can get rancid?

Hi Katie. Are all essential oils safe for baby? I’m just wondering which ones I can use in this baby balm in place of the ones you listed (just because I don’t have all those). Thank you!!

Did you use 15 drops of ROSE ABSOLUTE (SOLVENT EXTRACTED) from mountain rose herbs in this recipe? I was just curious because this oil seems stronger then the others.
Thanks and I’m so thankful for your blog!!

    Hi Katie,
I am so excited to make this balm. I have bought all the ingredients and just had one question. I wanted to ask about the rose oil that you suggested to use in the balm. I have ROSE ABSOLUTE (SOLVENT EXTRACTED) from Mountain Rose Herbs. This seems strong and I was wondering if it is the same one you use in your recipe with 15 drops?

    Thanks! This blog is amazing:)

    Hi Katie
I love your baby balm, I just want to ask, from what age can I use it on a baby. (with the oils as you mixed it).

    Thank you

What is your opinion about using just Coconut oil for a moisturizer? What if I melted it down, and put some lavender oil in it, and let it harden again? I’ve been using it on my own skin, and it’s been really helpful for me. What do you think??

I love this for baby…but I especially love it as my personal facial moisturizer(minus castor oil). It is wonderful under makeup and hydrates all day.
