When I was pregnant with my first child, my friends and relatives literally gave me 11 bottles of baby lotion. The smell reminded me of my own childhood. I loved that it was specially formulated for babies, so of course, the ingredients had to be natural and safe. Right?

… and then I actually read the ingredients.

What’s in Baby Lotion?

Ingredients like petroleum, artificial fragrances, and propylene glycol weren’t something I wanted on my baby’s skin. I searched for natural baby balm options and found a few great ones. There are even more options available now if you’re not in the DIY mood.

This Everyday Baby Balm from Motherlove or this one from Badger have clean ingredients and work well. I still preferred making my own baby balm though because I could easily customize the ingredients and it was a lot cheaper.

Choosing Natural Ingredients For Baby Balm

I decided to make my own from food-safe ingredients. And I even had many of the ingredients on hand already for my homemade lotion bars and other beauty products.

This baby balm recipe uses:

  • Cocoa Butter – High in antioxidants and skin moisturizing fatty acids. It leaves a barrier on the skin to help prevent moisture loss and keep things like urine from irritating sensitive skin.
  • Shea Butter – A natural source of vitamin A and other nutrients, shea butter is highly nourishing and protective to the skin.
  • Olive Oil– Attracts moisture to the skin and repairs damaged skin. It’s also a major source of plant-based squalene, a lipid our skin cells make to lubricate and protect the skin.
  • Castor Oil– High in ricinoleic acid and skin protective.
  • Essential Oils – You can use any diluted baby-safe essential oils you prefer, but I use frankincense, chamomile, and rose.

Important Note on Essential Oil Safety and Babies

I love essential oils and use them daily for cleaning, aromatherapy, skincare, and more. They are highly concentrated though and not every essential oil is safe or appropriate for every purpose.

Frankincense, lavender, chamomile, and rose are all gentle options and generally considered safe for babies 3 months and older. Essential oils should always be diluted for little ones and generally should not be more than .25% of the recipe. For this recipe that translates to about 7 drops of essential oils total

Herbal Infused Oil

If you have a baby under 3 months or just prefer to skip the essential oils, then an herb-infused baby balm is a great alternative. Here are detailed instructions for how to make an herbal infused oil.

Lots of herbs will work in a baby balm, but here are some of my favorites. They have natural skin soothing and healing properties and are safe for babies (barring any allergies).

Here’s how to make my favorite homemade baby balm!

Materials

Instructions

  • Heat all of the ingredients (except essential oils) in a double boiler or in a glass jar or bowl over a small pan of boiling water.
  • Stir carefully until melted.
  • Remove from heat and add essential oils if using.
  • Pour into a glass jar and let it cool in the fridge for several hours or until firm.
  • Store at room temperature and use a small amount as needed for baby’s skin (or adult skin)

Notes

Use herb infused olive oil to make the recipe if desired. Check the article for ideas of what to use.

Shelf Life and Storage

Since this baby balm is oil based it has a much longer shelf life than baby lotion with water-based ingredients. It should last 1-2 years when stored away from direct light and heat.

The baby balm takes a few minutes to absorb into the skin and you only need to use a tiny bit. I’ve had friends say it was incredibly helpful for eczema and skin problems as well.

Hi! I see other people posted this question also, but it was never answered. I made this and it never solidified… It stayed very liquidy. So I added coconut oil and remelted… Didn’t help. Any suggestions?

In order for coconut oil to stay solidified, it needs to be kept in a cool dark place. That may be part of the problem. Hope that helps 🙂

I found two baby lotion/balm recipes you have online. Which is recommended? This recipe or the lotion? I see Whats the difference with usage?

    The other lotion recipe:

1/2 cup almond or olive oil
    1/4 cup coconut oil
    1/4 cup beeswax
    1 tsp vitamin e oil
2 TBSP shea butter or cocoa butter
    essential oils

This recipe is much more creamy/balmy than the other recipe, which uses beeswax to bulk it up a bit. You may find that your baby’s delicate skin absorbs this balm more readily, but it’s really up to you which to make.

Is it necessary to use castor oil? Can it be eliminated? I also have grape seed oil, and other oils. Kinda looking to use what I have instead of buying more.
    Thank you,
    Melissa

I am interested in making this or your luxurious lotion recipe but have a question about smell. While I was pregnant I made my own body oils with a mixture of sunflower oil and others and by the end of my pregnancy my bed sheets as well as any shirts I wore on a regular basis had to be thrown away because of the rancid oil smell that would not wash out. Do you have any thoughts on that problem? Would this recipe do the same thing or does the fact that it’s made with butters help? Thanks so much!

I have the same question. My natural laundry soap can’t wash off the oils off my sheets and clothes.

Do you put ALL of the essential oils at one time… Or do you make a batch for each oil?

I made this used it for my newborn now I’m making another batch! I didn’t use any essential oils so every evening after his bath he smells like chocolate 🙂 thanks for the recipe

From what i understand babies shouldn’t be exposed to essential oils intil after 6-7 month old. I want to make a baby balm for a friends baby shower but do not want to use essential oils what do you recommend i use to give it a mild aroma without possible allergic reaction?

    Wellnessmama,
Would you recommend this over your Luxurious Homeade Lotion for a baby? If ao, why is it better? I was going to make some lotion for my friends baby (4 months old) and planned on making the Luxurious recipe as that’s what I make for our family…Thanks for your help.

Hi Katie, I want to make this ahead so when the baby comes, I won’t have to stress about it. Now I know you said it can last year’s x but being that it is oil, is there a possibility that it can get rancid?

Hi Katie. Are all essential oils safe for baby? I’m just wondering which ones I can use in this baby balm in place of the ones you listed (just because I don’t have all those). Thank you!!

Did you use 15 drops of ROSE ABSOLUTE (SOLVENT EXTRACTED) from mountain rose herbs in this recipe? I was just curious because this oil seems stronger then the others.
Thanks and I’m so thankful for your blog!!

    Hi Katie,
I am so excited to make this balm. I have bought all the ingredients and just had one question. I wanted to ask about the rose oil that you suggested to use in the balm. I have ROSE ABSOLUTE (SOLVENT EXTRACTED) from Mountain Rose Herbs. This seems strong and I was wondering if it is the same one you use in your recipe with 15 drops?

    Thanks! This blog is amazing:)

    Hi Katie
I love your baby balm, I just want to ask, from what age can I use it on a baby. (with the oils as you mixed it).

    Thank you

What is your opinion about using just Coconut oil for a moisturizer? What if I melted it down, and put some lavender oil in it, and let it harden again? I’ve been using it on my own skin, and it’s been really helpful for me. What do you think??

I love this for baby…but I especially love it as my personal facial moisturizer(minus castor oil). It is wonderful under makeup and hydrates all day.
