The average American drinks approximately 38 GALLONS of soda each year. Some people even admit to drinking more soda than water each day, or no water at all. Soft drinks are a multi-billion dollar product, and they account for a quarter of all drinks consumed in the United States.

The good news is that according to Gallup the number of soda-guzzlers seems to be declining since the 1990s and early 2000s, which is good news as the number of gallons of soda consumed per year was as high as 50!

I’m certainly thankful that more Americans avoid soda, but with so many consuming gallons of it each year, it becomes important to evaluate how soft drinks can influence a person’s health.

Soda, pop, coke… whatever you call it, if you drink it, we have to talk!

Is Soda Bad for Your Health?

I think you can guess my answer from the title of this post, but I’ll go a little further… I’d even say that with a little research it becomes clear that even moderate consumption of soda can be dangerous.

Sure, some will argue that anything in moderation is OK, and in most cases, I’d agree. When it comes to soda, the amount of sugar and additives is so high that I don’t think “moderation” even exists, and it certainly doesn’t exist in the 20 ounce or larger bottles that are so common.

I’ll admit, when it comes to sugar I’m kind of a stickler. This won’t surprise anyone who has read my take on Halloween candy or Easter baskets. But that’s only because it’s one area of health where the research doesn’t leave much room for debate. Sugar has zero health benefits and many health risks, including cancer, and it’s even worse in soft drink form.

Here are 10 reasons why even the occasional soda indulgence isn’t worth it, and some suggestions of healthier drinks to try.

10 Reasons to Avoid Drinking Soda

  1. The Sugar! – A single can of soda contains the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This amount of sugar, especially in liquid form, skyrockets the blood sugar and causes an insulin reaction in the body. Over time, this can lead to diabetes or insulin resistance, not to mention weight gain and other health problems. Soft drink companies are the largest users of sugar in the country. To make matters worse, soft drink sugar usually comes in the form of high fructose corn syrup.
  2. Phosphoric Acid – Soda contains phosphoric acid, which interferes with the body’s ability to absorb calcium and can lead to osteoporosis, cavities, and bone softening. Phosphoric acid also interacts with stomach acid, slowing digestion and blocking nutrient absorption.
  3. Artificial Sweeteners – In diet sodas, aspartame is used as a substitute for sugar and can actually be more harmful. It has been linked to almost a hundred different health problems including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, diabetes, and emotional disorders. It converts to methanol at warm temperatures, which breaks down to formaldehyde and formic acid. Diet sodas also increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar, and raised cholesterol. There are a few stevia-sweetened drinks on the market that might be less of a concern but I still wouldn’t recommend consuming these in favor of plain water or healthier drink options (see below).
  4. Caffeine – Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain cancers, breast lumps, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, and other problems.
  5. Water – The water used in soda is just simple tap water and can contain chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, and traces of heavy metals.
  6. Obesity – Harvard researchers have recently positively linked soft drinks to obesity. The study found that 12-year-olds who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times.
  7. Extra Fructose – Sodas contain high fructose corn syrup, which obviously comes from corn. Most of this corn has been genetically modified, and there are no long-term studies showing the safety of genetically modified crops, as genetic modification of crops has only been around since the 1990s. Also, the process of making high fructose corn syrup involves traces of mercury, a heavy metal that can cause a variety of long-term health problems.
  8. Lack of Nutrients – There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body.
  9. Dehydration – While it may taste refreshing, because of the high sugar, sodium, and caffeine content in soda, it actually dehydrates the body. Over a long period of time this can cause chronic dehydration (so reach for water instead)/
  10. Bad for the Teeth – Drinking soda regularly causes plaque to build up on the teeth and can lead to cavities and gum disease.

Healthy Alternatives to Soda

I’ve heard that it can be really difficult for those who consume soda daily to just stop drinking it cold turkey. This actually makes sense when you think about how sugar affects the body and creates positive feedback loops that are tough to break.

If you’re a soda drinker and are looking for some healthy alternatives, there are tons of options to choose from! The key is to have a few new recipes at the ready and in hand when sugar cravings strike.

  • Herb and/or Fruit Infused Water – You don’t have to buy it at the store… try one of these ideas to make your own flavored water, or for a fizzy version use club soda flavored with a squeeze of fresh fruit juice or some fresh ginger root.
  • Water Kefir – This homemade water kefir has the same fizz and sweetness but with a boost of probiotics! Also try this coconut water kefir.
  • Kombucha – Like kefir, you can make kombucha at home and it is naturally fizzy and packed with vitamins.
  • Ginger Switchel – A quick and easy drink that is refreshing and healthy with the benefits of ACV.
  • Iced Turmeric Lemonade – This light, refreshing, and slightly sweet drink is perfect for a hot summer day. You’d never know this drink is actually good for you (unlike soda!).
  • Homemade Root Beer – If you must indulge, make your own healthier version! This root beer recipe uses real ingredients and contains far less sugar than store-bought soda. You do need a few unusual ingredients for this one but it’s a fun project to do with the kids so they can see how root beer is actually made!
  • Homemade Ginger Ale – An easy homemade recipe for ginger ale made with real ginger and a touch of unrefined organic sugar.

A couple other store bought options are Bai and Zevia.

Need a little extra help to kick the habit? Here’s some helpful tips and recipes on how to beat sugar cravings with a few spices from the kitchen.

The Bottom Line on Soda

Soda may taste good, but the bottom line is that soda isn’t healthy in any amount and there is absolutely no reason or justification for consuming it. We are talking about a substance that is often consumed in place of water (which most of us don’t drink enough of), contains no nutrients or beneficial properties whatsoever, and is packed with sugar and artificial additives that make it harmful.

Just stop drinking soda… and your health will thank you!

Do you drink soda? If so, how much and how often?

I love the healthy alternatives aspect. I’ve seen countless posts on why people should stop drinking soda – but the how is much more difficult. Water is better for health but it certainly doesn’t have the same emotional impact that people are used to.

To be clear, no single source of calories uniquely causes the litany of complex health conditions listed here. Quite to the contrary, decades of scientific research, as well as worldwide regulatory authorities, have repeatedly reaffirmed the safety of soft drinks and their ingredients.

Beverages, including soft drinks, can be part of a balanced lifestyle. There are lots of choices that have little to no sugar or some that are in smaller packages.

Also, contrary to the misinformation here, low calorie beverages and the sweeteners they contain have been proven safe by hundreds of scientific studies. The FDA, World Health Organization, European Food Safety Authority and others have extensively reviewed these beverages and have all reached the same conclusion – they are safe for consumption.

Since your email address is from the American Beverage Association, a lobbying and trade organization funded by the beverage industry who stands to lose money if people stop consuming these unhealthy drinks, it’s quite apparent that you have a bias towards preserving the continuation of society’s addiction to sugar laden soft drinks…

    Hi Katie!
Thanks for speaking out about soda. Even though I hardly got soda growing up, I still developed a craving for it. Now I make our own berry flavored kombucha to kick my soda craving. Delicious! All your other soda alternatives sound intriguing, too. Hmmm, I may have to try some of your other options now!

Kicking the soda habit is totally worth it. I quit sodas cold turkey five years ago,now when I do try to drink one it tastes horrible. Do not miss them one bit.

Is soda water made solely from water but carbonated via a sodastream (pressurised bubble maker) bad for health?

I stopped drinking soda about 3 years ago when I had a doctor’s visit and they got so upset when they found out that’s been all I drank. Come about 1-2 years later, I also cut out tea completely. All I drink now is water (about 10-16 glasses per day) and the occasional milk for calcium or Gatorade for electrolytes when’s exercising. To be brutally honest, since I cut out soda, I’ve never felt better! My teeth have gotten so much whiter, I look healthier, I don’t get fatigued as often, I’ve started to develop a lot more muscle, and my blood pressure was a perfect 130/80 the last time I went to the allergist! If you’re thinking about letting go of soda, please do, you’ll love it. And it’s not wrong to have one every now and then, I may take a small gulp of my dad’s Mountain Dew once a year, but even then not I usually don’t. But, you will feel a lot better after changing your habits.

Thank you for the good reminder to stay away from soda! I learned this in 2007 when diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer after living on Diet Soda a year. Saying No to Cancer is saying no to soda, artificial sweeteners. processed fats, oils, sugar and processed foods.

I propose that all companies who are manufacturers of sodas be forced by the authorities in line to take responsibilities and start wellness centers, or otherwise where people like Susie and others can be educated on how to detox from it.

I drink nothing but Pepsi I believe it’s the 16 oz bottles 3 in morning 4 in afternoon and 3 in evening. I don’t drink water and I can’t stop!

    Hi,

I would like to share my personal experiences with Coke / Pepsi. I agree, undoubtedly, that they both have great tastes. But that does not absolve them of the harm they induce to our bodies. I have been a regular Coke / Pepsi drinker till a few years back, when I totally went off them or any of the Dark Drinks. I am an IT person and so was used to them and various other Sodas, while working long hours. Sometimes due to taste, and sometimes due to just wanting something cold and refreshing (though now I am sure they were definitely not refreshing). Being a little rotund, I used to avoid the Sugar laden varieties of the Sodas and used to have Diet Sodas or the ones that are also Caffeine free. Also, the Carbon Dioxide content was unintelligently used as a Burp inducing agent. Usually, I would have about 1 can of either Coke/Pepsi or some other drink. They still seemed to affect me, negatively. Over the years all the Dark Sodas that I had (even the ones without sugar) seemed to have cleansed my complete digestive system, not only of the Bad bacteria, but also the Good bacteria (that are actually needed for proper digestion). The result was a near collapse of my bowel movements, with me frequenting the Restroom many times a day. A Gastroenterologist suggested Probiotic treatment with capsules containing more than 100 billion good bacteria each, twice a day, for a few weeks. Only, after such a treatment was I able to regain some of my health. I have them even today, occasionally, when I feel uneasy. This made me reflect on what had transpired. Irrespective of whether the Soda had sugar or not, it still seemed to harm my Digestive Tract. Slowly, when I actually researched on the various Ingredients of Coke and Pepsi and other Dark drinks, a common component (that may actually be the culprit) came to light: Phosphoric Acid (or Phosphates). This compound is the one mainly responsible for completely clearing out my digestive tract and the sorry state of affairs for me. During my research I came to know that Phosphoric Acid is responsible for Gastro problems, reducing the density of bones and teeth, kidney problems, onset of diabetes and blurred vision, to name a few. As a joke, some of my friends even said that publicly Coke / Pepsi have been used as Toilet cleaners or to clean rust (YouTube has videos on them).

I appeal to everyone around the world to reduce their intake of the Dark drinks, if not shun them totally. They all shall remain healthier all their lives.

Salutations Ruchir! You write English extremely well, and I would have never guessed that English wasn’t your first language if you didn’t write so at the end of your comment. I am so glad to hear that you realized what those drinks were doing to you, and you were able to quit. My tummy is also in turmoil, better than it used to be, but still in bad shape. What I have been using to correct it is Kefir. It is a yogurt smoothie type drink- no dairy so it is good for those who are lactose intolerant. It has 12 different probiotics, more than any other drink or yogurt. I drink half a bottle a day, and it has changed my life, no exaggeration. After drinking this everyday for a few weeks straight, I feel like a different person. Generally I am nauseous almost all the time without drinking Kefir, and it is hard for me to eat normally. Then if I don’t eat due to nausea my stomach is in a great deal of pain. When that happens, all I can stomach is the Kefir drink, and that heals me enough so that I can start eating again. Unfortunately it is a little over $3 a bottle, which is a little expensive. But I have also gone days where all I consumed was a bottle of Kefir and some water, so it evens out.
My mom drank a 2liter bottle of Diet Coke everyday for more than a decade. She had every symptom of aspartame toxicity you could get, except cancer, for years. I kept showing her documents and studies and anything I could find to try and get her to stop drinking that poison. She didn’t drink alcohol, didn’t smoke anything, she exercised, she ate vegetables ect., yet she ended up with a fast acting aggressive cancer that went from her colon to her lymph nodes to her spine, until she was in so much pain she decided to write the DNR(do not resuscitate) and have the hospice fill her up with pain meds. Pain meds that she never took before, even after back surgery and broken bones. She was in so much pain, even though she hated drugs- she was all too willing to take the morphine and wait to die. The cancer she got at 59, dead by 60. Colon cancer- which happens to be a side effect of aspartame toxicity, as is osteoporosis, arthritis, ulcers, migraines, depression, anxiety, insomnia, brain fog, skin breakouts, weight gain, ect.
Unfortunately, she did not believe me. She was one of those people who truly trusted the government, and she trusted the FDA. She couldn’t accept the fact that there was info being kept from the public, and she just refused to believe that the FDA and our government would allow something on the market that was that harmful. Of course she drank a 2liter a day, which is much more than what is recommended. A lot of people give me the argument, “Well, everything gives you cancer”, when I try to tell others what I have learned. The thing is, that is a ridiculous argument. Not everything gives you cancer, and plenty of food items are cancerous, that will make you sick if you consume them. The more you consume them, the bigger the chance you will get sick. I think if she even just had a few cans of diet coke a week(rather than the daily 2liter), she would still be alive. Aspartame promotes tumor growth, yet another thing I tried desperately to get through her head. After she was on chemo for the cancer, she finally switched from Diet Coke to…….Fresca. Fresca, which also has aspartame in it. She wouldn’t believe me, she wouldn’t even look into it herself. And now she is dead. All because she was stubborn and too trusting of the FDA and soda/food corporations. If she trusted me, she would be alive today.
Anyways, I am glad you get it, and are willing to make the changes necessary to be healthy. You are doing the right thing, I know you know you are just by the difference in how you feel. It really does harm, soda in general and the aspartame, or any fake sugar really. I wish more people would take a good hard look into all of this. I wish more people would just experiment on themselves and quit drinking it for a few months just to see the difference. My body feels 10x better than it did. My teeth feel better, my skin looks better, and I am not getting all the bone aches I used to get while drinking soda.
There was a girl who commented on here about how she quit drinking Coke, and then didn’t have any energy and gained weight, so she started drinking it again. She didn’t know that you have to stop drinking it longer than a week or two for the body to completely detox from it. The lack of caffeine was probably what made her lethargic and hungrier, and if she just stuck it out, drank some tea in place of the soda, she would have known what we know, lol.
Take care of yourself, and many blessings to you

Soda isn’t healthy. I stop using it because I felt ulcers-like feeling in my body. People should learn that soda is nothing but just poison.

  12. Jack Avatar

The Harvard Study is mainly focused on the effects of “sugary” Drinks.
I don’t think anyone will argue that excessive consumption of sugar can have many negative effects.

  13. John Avatar

Even in moderation it’s bad for you? Oh please… Seems like anything and everything will make you fat, kill you, or give you cancer. Does any of this information even come from credible sources? A perfectly healthy individual will not be considered “unhealthy” just because he/she decides to drink a soda every now and then. People are less healthy these days because they don’t exercise, eat whatever the flip they want, and don’t give a crap about their health. I exercise daily and consume 2,000 calories a day, I feel perfectly healthy, and I don’t plan on dropping soda just because everybody keeps trying to tell me that it’ll kill me. There is no single contributor to poor health. It’s too bad so many people are so quick to believe everything they read.

  14. Zach Avatar

Wow, not one source cited in this entire article. While it is obvious to most that drinking soda is correlated with an unhealthy lifestyle, simply attributing all aspects of an unhealthy life to soda is implying causation and is an appalling representation of science and is wholly irresponsible. While I do agree that the aspartame found in diet sodas are dangerous, due to a number of European studies that have found them to be so, the implication that high fructose corn syrup is dangerous simply because it comes from genetically altered corn is fearmongering. Sure, there are no long-term studies proving it’s safe, but there are also no studies that even remotely suggest that it is dangerous. Not one. Despite countless millions spent by the corporations that benefit from “natural” foods to fund those studies. People are realizing this, which is why Whole Foods profits are dropping like non-GMO crops in the wake of a blight.

    1. Becky Avatar

Actually, Zach, several studies have linked soda consumption to a number of health problems. You can google this yourself. the Harvard school of public health has a handy reference. I’m not putting a link in because it slows the time it takes my comment to get posted. Katie stated in an earlier comment that this is an early post and she has flagged it for needing more citations, which she will add when she has time. In the meantime, you can do the research yourself. The studies certainly exist.
Furthermore, I can’t resist calling you out on your misguided comments on Whole Foods. Yes, WFM is struggling with dropping sales, but it’s not because organic foods are less popular, it’s because they are MORE popular. WFM is facing with stiff competition from stores like Walmart and Costco, which have started offering more organic healthy options because of the STAGGERING DEMAND. In fact, Aldi, an extremely popular and ever-growing grocery discount store, has just recently pledged to remove synthetic colors, partially hydrogenated oils, and added MSG from all of its products. This is a business decision from a place that is geared toward profit. You are absolutely wrong about the market trend in grocery purchases. Are you a college econ student? Keep studying, bro.

I cut soda out of my diet in an attempt to lose weight. It didn’t work and I actually gained weight. I added Coke back to my diet and no joke I saw the weight just come off because I had a lot more energy and can now run for miles a day (my problem when I gained weight was I wasn’t exercising enough). I’ve dropped 30 pounds and my bmi is now low. I know people say soda is bad but it’s hard for me to see it since I’ve so much success losing weight while drinking Coke.
