I’ve written about many natural beauty ideas before, but oil cleansing may be one of the simplest. It’s one of the most effective natural beauty tips I’ve found for healthy, clearer skin. Here’s how to add it to your skincare routine and why it can work so well!

I admit, I was skeptical before I first tried this oil-cleansing method. My skin is naturally oily and I wasn’t sure it would work for me. I also had very acne-prone skin when I was younger, and was afraid that a method like this would bring back the acne… I was wrong!

What Is Oil Cleansing?

It may sound crazy, but the idea of using natural oils to gently cleanse the skin makes a lot of sense. The basic idea is to use natural oils in a specific combination to cleanse and naturally balance the skin’s natural oils. This produces more nourished and moisturized skin than detergent-based face wash.

The basic concept of oil cleansers is using oil to massage and cleanse the skin. Like dissolves like and the carrier oils help dissolve the impurities stuck in pores. Warm water then opens the pores allowing the grime and sebum to be easily removed.

Fans of the OCM claim it can help with oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, and whiteheads. The types of oil you choose depend on your skin type.

Natural Makeup Remover

Many makeup products have oil in them and oil cleansing can help remove these too. Use it to remove foundation powder, mascara, and even eye makeup! Here are more DIY makeup remover ideas.

Does the Oil Cleansing Method Work?

This is the part I’m most excited to share! Even in the third trimester of pregnancy, when my skin usually goes a little hormone-crazy, I had ZERO breakouts! I used oil cleansing for several months to help avoid blemishes and remove makeup.

When I first started using oil cleansing, I had an adjustment period where my skin got worse for about a week. Most resources I’ve seen suggest this is a detox reaction as impurities are pulled from the skin. This is definitely what it seemed to be for me. After that, my skin gradually improved and by 3-4 weeks of using only oil cleansing, I had no excess oil, no dryness, and no blackheads.

I asked several friends and family members who now use the oil cleansing method how it’s worked for them, and they seemed to have the same results. Some even noted that the combination of oil cleansing and taking gelatin daily has been the best anti-aging treatment!

Oil Cleansing Ingredients

Want to try oil cleansing and see the results for yourself? All you need are some natural oils and a clean, damp washcloth!

The most common oils used are castor oil and olive oil, though you can use any natural oil. Castor oil is naturally astringent, so it helps pull impurities from the skin. This makes it ideal for oily or combination skin (and even dry skin in lesser amounts). While I use castor oil packs to help detox, it can be too harsh if it’s used undiluted as an oil cleanser.

You’ll mix the castor oil with another carrier oil (or several) that match your skin type. My other favorite oil to use is olive oil, though sunflower, safflower, or even coconut oil can work.

Which Oils Work Best for Oil Cleansing?

Some oils, like rosehip oil and castor oil, are more astringent (drying) than others. Others like olive oil can be too heavy for naturally oily skin. Here are some oil cleansing options and how they work:

Base Oils

These are oils to use in larger amounts along with the castor oil.

  • Avocado oil – Good for combination, dry, or mature skin.
  • Grapeseed oil – Lightweight oil that’s good for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Sunflower oil – A lighter oil that’s good for combination or oily skin.
  • Sweet almond oil – Good for oily, sensitive, or combination skin types.
  • Coconut oil – This works really well for some and not so well for others. It can be too drying and pore-clogging, especially for acne. Some people love it in skincare products though.
  • Olive oil – My favorite oil to use. Great for mature or dry skin, but I found it worked well for my slightly oilier skin too. Be sure to get real olive oil though since most of what’s in the store is mixed with other, cheaper oils.

Specialty Carrier Oils

These work great to add a little more customization to your OCM blend. They’re a more concentrated source of skin-loving nutrients. You can add just a little bit of these to your oil blend for big benefits.

  • Rosehip oil This astringent oil is great for more oily skin types but in smaller amounts it’s also a good anti-aging oil. Full of vitamins A and C to help with scar tissue, blemishes, and wrinkles.
  • Argan oil – Packed with vitamins A and E, antioxidants, and linoleic acid. It’s emollient, helps protect against free radical damage, is anti-aging and moisturizing.
  • Jojoba oil – Similar to skin’s sebum, jojoba has vitamins E and B as well as minerals. It won’t clog pores and it’s great for all skin types.
  • Essential oils – While these aren’t a carrier oil, they deserve a mention. They offer additional skin benefits to help with anti-aging, inflammation, and blemishes. Some of my favorites are lavender, tea tree, frankincense, sweet orange, and cedarwood. Just add a drop or two to your OCM blend (but be sure to avoid the eyes!).

Want to Buy It?: Don’t want to buy the oils yourself and DIY it? This handmade oil cleansing blend smells divine and works well for oil cleansing.

Oil Cleansing Blends

If you’re new to oil cleansing, it may take a few tries to figure out what oil blend works best for you. I used a mix of 3/4 olive oil and 1/4 castor or hazelnut oil and it’s perfect for my skin. You can also try the following:

  • Oily Skin: 1/3 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 2/3 sunflower, grapeseed, or sweet almond oil.
  • Combination Skin: 1/4 castor oil or hazelnut oil and 3/4 olive, sweet almond, sunflower, or other oil
  • Dry Skin: All nourishing oils like avocado or olive oil, or a very small amount of castor/hazelnut oil added to the nourishing oils.

Start with the suggested amounts above for your skin type and adjust if needed. When I started, I mixed up very small batches until I figured out the right blend for me.

I’ve also found that even pure coconut oil can work well once the skin has adjusted, though it can be drying on some skin types. One friend uses a half and half mix of coconut oil and olive oil that she blends in a blender to create a cream, and this works perfectly for her.

Oil Cleansing Tutorial

Now that you know which oils to use, here’s how to do the OCM!

  1. Pour a quarter-sized amount of the oil blend into your hand and massage onto your dry skin. Use smooth circular strokes to massage it in for 1-2 minutes. If you’re wearing makeup no need to wash it off first!
  2. Optional: Leave the oil on for up to 10 minutes to deeply clean skin cells and pores.
  3. Soak a clean washcloth in very hot water and place the damp cloth over your face for a minute or so. This creates steam to remove any oils and skin impurities. Repeat if needed.
  4. Use the washcloth to gently remove any remaining oil. There will still be a thin layer of oil on the skin and this is beneficial.
  5. Most people don’t need a moisturizer after the adjustment period. However, if you still have dry skin, try reducing the castor oil in your blend and use a little lotion to moisturize.

Oil Cleansing Method FAQs

Oil Cleansing With Acne

It’s normal for it to take a week or so for the skin to adjust. You may even see more oily skin or breakouts during this time as impurities leave the skin. If you can, resist the urge to use harsh soaps or facial cleansers as it will make the adjustment period take longer.

You can also speed up the detox process by using a clay face mask once or twice a week.

The Oils Aren’t Working For me

Even if you don’t have acne-prone skin you may still have an adjustment period. And you’ll likely have to experiment with different oils to find your perfect oil ratio. If your skin is too dry afterward then reduce the castor oil (or rosehip oil if using). If it’s way too greasy, try a lighter-weight oil or increase the castor oil used.

If you find your skin really doesn’t like this after a month (and you’ve already tried different oils) then the OCM may not be a good option for your skin.

Cleaning Up Afterward

If you do this in the shower, make sure to clean your shower floor regularly so it doesn’t get slippery! Some readers have also asked how to clean the washcloth afterward. I do a separate load of laundry for them and wash on hot. You can also follow the wash up with a vinegar rinse before drying.

The Oil Cleansing Method uses natural oils like castor oil, coconut oil and olive oil and is incredible for naturally cleansing and moisturizing the skin.

This sounds so great. Have a question if anyone can help. I have the following oils: Olive, Coconut, Almond kernel, Sunflower and Flax seed. I believe all are organic and cold pressed. For combination skin, what combination would you use? I am trying to avoid buying anything else in case any of these will work 🙂
    Thank you

This might be slightly redundant, but I’ve been wanting to try this SO bad, but also am a bit scared because of my bad cystic acne I’ve had for the last 9/10 years (I’m 30). It’s just that I’ve been seriously considering accutane (I know I know!), and would rather not. But what if while surviving the detox period (b/c I’m sure mine would be horrendous), you really need to use make up to conceal- will it be affected by the OCM? I mean, I think I read one of the comments about the makeup ‘sliding off’?? I already have enough trepidation of my bad acne getting worse- but if I couldn’t cover it? But it would be HEAVEN if I could treat/detox my acne with something natural.

Also- for cystic acne- would you still recommend 1/3 castor oil + 2/3 olive oil? (and it would have to be daily, since I still need make up to conceal) Thanks!!

I’d actually try half and half of castor and olive oil and as long as you rinse well, you shouldn’t have any problem with makeup.

Ok thanks! Also, is there anyway to break it in smoother? Like if I starting doing coconut oil mouth swishing(you know- you swish around in your mouth for 20 mins/day and it’s suppose to pull toxins?), for a week or two before, would that help detoxify a little so the breakouts wouldn’t be as bad? I hope that makes sense.

Also- Is olive oil better to use than grapeseed oil? If I used your ratio of castor oil with grapeseed oil (instead of olive oil), would that have the same results? Just curious. I know there are more than one beneficial oil- but is there a site that breaks down which oil gives what results?

I agree with you, detergents were so harsh on my skin. Since I started oil cleansing about six months ago I have noticed such a huge difference in my skin! I use jojoba with a little orange essential oil & it really seems to help balance my skin & heal any scarring I may have had from a blemish or two. Thanks for a great site!

Thank you THANK YOU for posting this! I struggle horribly with acne (I am 28) and there is absolutely no room in the budget to try all the chemical laden stuff on the market that just dries out my skin anyway and ends up making it all look even worse…and painful. I used this this morning and loved it so much I ran to the store to get enough to make a big batch to last. Can I just say, my skin looks amazing! moisturized and smooth and feels very clean. I react to literally everything out there so I don’t use a moisturizer and my skin is calm and even toned. I can’t wait to see how much better it gets!
    Thanks again!

I have been oil cleansing for about 2 1/2 weeks and have had nothing but horrible breakouts. I am using a 1/3 Castor oil 2/3 olive oil mixture. What am I doing wrong?

Are you using anything else on your skin? Even soap in the shower? Some people will have a longer detox reaction, but perhaps try adding more castor oil in the short term to balance the oils more…

My skin was quite dry at first so I was using a simple Shea butter and olive oil cream to moisturize. But that was it. I will try adding more castor oil. Is the oil cleansing supposed to be done daily?

        1. Wellness Mama Avatar
          Wellness Mama

It can be done daily, but some people only need it every couple of days with just using water in between…

I’m using olive oil with just a tiny bit of castor oil, and it seems to be drying out my skin quite a bit. But I love how natural it is and generally my skin is looking better! I’ve been doing it for about a week now, daily. Perhaps I’m one of those people who only needs to do it every couple of days – but if that is the case, how would I get my makeup off so my pores don’t get clogged by it?

          2. Wellness Mama Avatar
            Wellness Mama

You could probably just use olive oil and also use a dab of olive, coconut or argan oil for moisturizing after…

How can you tell how often you need to cleanse with oil? I had great skin for the first week but today I started getting these white head pustule things. I have been cleansing every day, but should I do it less often? I really haven’t had much acne until today!

        2. Kay Avatar

Don’t use Shea butter !!! That could be causing breakouts it’s way too heavy

How would almond oil work as the carrier? I have a lot of it around the house, that’s why I ask. Would almond and hazelnut work?

Thanks so much for introducing me to oil cleansing! I am nearing 40 and have been searching for a better solution for my skin. Aging definitely takes a toll on the face and I will admit to getting a bit desperate to find a way to naturally minimize wrinkles and make my pores appear smaller. After spending way too much money on products that don’t work and are chemical-laden, I came across your article. I gave it a shot and have been oil cleansing for several months now. My husband was the first to comment on how much healthier, soft, and glowing my complexion became. I also have very few blackheads, and my fine lines around my mouth and eyes are much less noticeable.

I pair the oil cleansing with a toner I make from mineral water, cider vinegar, and crushed asprin. I love how convenient the oil cleansing is – no makeup remover necessary, and I find it a relaxing way to end my day. (I cleanse at night before bed). My mother was so intriqued by my new beauty regime, that I made her a set to try (oil cleansing, toner, and Wellness Mama’s homemade lotion.) and now she is hooked too.

I love all your recipes and want to thank Katie for sharing so many great ideas and recipes with us!

I started doing OCM about 2 weeks ago and have had no problems whatsoever, I was wondering if anyone has used or thought about using Hemp oil. I use it to make salad dressing instead of EVOO.

I use hemp oil on my face and have only seen great results after 2 weeks of consistent use. I have dry (yet still a bit acne-prone) skin and live in a cold climate so i mix in a bit of avocado oil, as well.

    Hi 🙂

I would just like to say that I LOVE your website. It’s so amazing. I’ve learned so much about how to be all natural. Just the idea of going back to my shower and using all those sulfate laden products makes me cringe now.

I’d like to know about the oil cleansing method… I have semi dry skin and an oily T-panel . So I have these tiny pimples between my brows. At the moment I only have olive oil at hand and I don’t live very close to a shop where I can find all the other oils mentioned above. Will only olive oil work? And will it get rid of my oily T-panel?

    Thanks a million.

It may do great alone… you might still have a detox period for a few days or a week, but olive oil is a very similar pH to the skin so its worth a try…

I am in LOVVE! With this site! To the creator; You are amazing! I first came across this site, looking for a natural lotion I can mix at home. The ingredients were exactly how I like things; Simple! I ventured off into the other areas of this site such as the natural face cleanser. Right now I’m trying to create my own perfume and I’m a little stuck. I know the recipe calls for a large amount, but how do I use to reduce the quantity? I want to test it out first, before I jump into the huge bottles, yakno? I wasted two of the essential oils I hand picked for the type of smell I’m wanting only because I don’t have the correct measurements. Trial and error. 🙂 I need the smell to be breath taking, inviting and powerful! (Btw, the oils if anyone’s interested, are Egyptian Musk, African Musk and Obession. I got them from a local hair store and they are a must try! If your fascinated by scents such as I.) Thank you for creating this site! You are a beautiful and magnificent person! Truly. Thank you for sharing your findings w us! Take care!

Hello! I’m on day 9 of oil cleansing and my skin looks terrible 🙁
Crazy break-outs, yet dry and flaky in several patches. I’m using the 1/4 castor – 3/4 olive oil mixture. I thought about using less castor and more olive and maybe adding a few drops of tea tree oil in there. I’ve been using a tea tree/water “toner” on my pimples that have come up to hopefully make them go away.
Any suggestions or ideas? Maybe I should switch to different oils? I’m trying to hang in there and give it the “detoxing” phase, but it’s hard when I had issues with acne when I was in college and thought those days were long behind me!! THANK YOU!!

I’d hang in there a little longer and maybe add some coconut oil in to the mix too. Are you using any soap at any point? That could also be causing the problem…

Hello Wellnessmama I was wondering what kind of Olive Oil do you use? Just trying to find something of good quality. I was also wondering if I could use the hazelnut/olive oil blend for oil pulling on my teeth too or should I definitely use the brushing blend?

I get it from Tropical Traditions… you can definitely use that for oil pulling, or plain olive or coconut oil works great too.

Hi there! I am a huge fan of your blog and with your help have gone almost chemical free with my personal products and my home. I have been using the oil cleansing method for months now and really see the benefits for my sensitive acne prone skin. One question though, could you recommend something to help naturally fade red marks left on pale skin? Thank you!

    1. Laura Avatar

Try Tamanu or Argan oils. I’ve been using them after cleansing with oil, and the red marks I had from acne have almost completely vanished. They’re more expensive than some of the other oils, but worth it IMO!

      1. Tanya Avatar

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to try the argan oil before coming back with comments. So worth the money, it makes my hair and skin so soft and I do see a real difference in the fading of my red marks. Thanks so much for the advice!

Help!! so I started using oil for two months but the wrong way – I used coconut oil after a shower and just left it on. My face got better at first, then worse but I persevered. Now it’s been about 3 weeks doing it your way but I also mixed it with olive oil and a tiny bit of castor.. I thought it was getting better but I’ve had acne in the same spots for two weeks now and it’s starting to spread.. is it because I did it wrong for so long? Maybe because it’s cold pressed virgin olive oil that should be stored in the fridge instead of the bathroom, or maybe I’m just detoxing too much for my skin to handle right now? My diet is pretty good, I’ve been pretty much completely in the raw for almost 4 months now and also started with the E3 live every day over a week ago.. I’m going to stick with this oil cleansing method but it’s hard to feel pretty with angry red things all over my face

    1. Daisy Avatar

Georgia, add 1-5 drops of tea tree oil to 1oz of oil(I use high grade olive oil).Tea tree oil is antibacterial and very good for all kind of acne, sore throat (to gargle ) and

It could still be a detox thing, but you might also try adding more castor oil. Everyone adjusts differently, I think. It took me a couple weeks to get past the detox/break out phase, but now my skin never breaks out…

    3. cbr0422 Avatar

Coconut oil isn’t to be stored in the fridge. The term “cold pressed” refers to the way the oil was extracted, not storage.

I tried this and loved the way it made my skin feel. But at about 2 weeks in I broke out with deep pimples that didn’t want to come to a head. I keep using the oil figuring my face just needed to adjust but the pimples kept getting worse so I finally stopped at about 4 weeks

I started doing this a few days ago and so far am loving the results, mainly not having to douse my face in witch hazel and then slather on moisturizer because my usual cleanser left my skin tight and dry. I’m wondering though if the castor oil/olive oil blend is safe to use on eyelids to cleanse or remove makeup?

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

I use it for that too and am just careful to keep my eyes closed until I’ve rinsed…

  17. Jean Avatar

I used coconut oil when I first started cleansing with oil, but it was difficult to work with plain, as I had to warm it so it would be a liquid when I used it. I don’t use a microwave on things I plan on eating, so I would heat water in a tea kettle, pour it into a bowl, and sit the jar of coconut oil the bowl of hot water until it softened/liquified. It was time consuming. I heard someone say just to let the hot water/steam in the bathroom soften the oil, but it takes a long time and a lot of hot water down the drain, for that to work. So I switched to grapeseed oil, and I like it much better – not just for ease of use but because it moisturizes so well and absorbs for me better than the coconut oil. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a huge fan of coconut oil, but for cleansing, at least at this point, I like grapeseed oil best! (PS. So far I haven’t made any mixes. Maybe coconut and grapeseed is great? I don’t know. I’m more of a grab-it-and-go kinda gal, so I really like that I can just put a jar of grapeseed oil in the shower and use it right out of the jar!)

    1. Marley Avatar

Just be careful with Grapeseed Oil because it can go rancid rather quickly. Its shelf life is only about 3 months once opened. You can extend the shelf life a little longer by adding some Vitamin E (tocopherol) to the bottle of Grapeseed Oil as soon as you open the bottle to avoid rancidity or to at least extend the shelf life of the Grapeseed Oil. Vit E is not a preservative but rather an antioxidant.
