If you’re still using store-bought lotion there are super easy natural alternatives that are fun to make! This DIY lotion recipe has three basic ingredients and only takes ten minutes to whip together.

The basic recipe is an ultra-moisturizing water-free version that lasts for years without preservatives. While lotion is technically a formulation of water and oil-based skincare ingredients, this one is oil-based. It feels more like a body butter and is great for dry skin.

Homemade Lotion

I discovered years ago that I could use natural ingredients to make my own skincare products and I haven’t looked back since! From homemade lip balm to whipped body butter I love making my own. Lotion bars were one of the first things I made and I’ve branched out to other kinds of lotion too. This version uses unrefined coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter to nourish skin deeply.

Most lotions use emulsifying wax to blend distilled water and carrier oils together. It can be tricky to do at home. Plus it requires preservatives to keep it from going bad! This DIY lotion skips that problem by eliminating the water. You can further extend the shelf life by using vitamin E. This antioxidant helps oils not go rancid as quickly.

Choosing a Carrier Oil

I use sweet almond oil for the carrier oil since it’s a middle of the road oil. It’s not as heavy as coconut oil, but it’s more moisturizing than something like grapeseed oil. You could replace it with whatever liquid carrier oil you prefer. Jojoba, olive oil, or avocado oil are also good options.

This lotion is ultra-moisturizing and more oily than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes. All the ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added.

Custom Lotion Making

Once you master the base recipe, have fun customizing your lotion to your skin type, skin conditions, and desired scent!

There are endless variations, but some of my favorites are:

  • Baby Lotion – Infuse the oil with dried calendula and chamomile before making the lotion.
  • Cooling Muscle Rub – Add peppermint, wintergreen, and ginger for sore muscles.
  • Anti-aging Face Lotion – Use argan oil and add lavender and patchouli essential oils.
  • Lavender and Vanilla Lotion – Add a few drops of lavender and a little natural vanilla extract.

Essential Oil Safety

So how many drops of essential oils should you add to your DIY lotion? It depends on the essential oil and your preference. If you add the optional shea butter, 45 drops of essential oil will be a 1% dilution. A 2% dilution is generally considered safe for skincare products like lotion.

If you like a really strong scent you could double the amount (to 2%). Or if you prefer a lighter scent or have more sensitive skin, you could cut the amount in half (or even less!). I avoid using essential oils on little ones, especially babies.

Certain oils like wintergreen, cinnamon, and lemongrass are harsher and need to be used in smaller amounts. Others, like grapefruit and lime, are phototoxic. Some of my favorite skin-friendly essential oils to use include:

Don’t Want to Make It?

If you want healthy lotion but don’t want to make it or don’t have the ingredients there are some good store-bought options. These lotions have clean ingredients and help hydrate thirsty skin:

Homemade DIY Lotion Recipe

Make smooth, luxurious lotion at home with almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and optional essential oils.
Prep Time20 minutes
Yield: 9 ounces
Author: Katie Wells

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter, in a double boiler. Or use a glass bowl on top of a simmering pan of water.
  • Stir occasionally as the ingredients melt.
  • Once the ingredients are completely melted, add the vitamin E oil and any essential oils or vanilla.
  • Pour into a glass jar or tin for storage and cool to room temperature. Small mason jars work perfectly for this. This will not pump well in a lotion pump!

Notes

  • A little goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and great for diaper rash, eczema, and for preventing stretch marks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 years.

    Hello, Wellness Mama!
I’m looking for a safe facial moisturizer. These homemade recipes that I have tried give me breakouts. Can you please recommend me a moisturizer that I can purchase that has safe, pure ingredients? I am currently using Aarbonne, but worry about the ingredients. Thanks so much!

I made this recipe using olive oil and I used cocoa butter in place of the coconut oil and it turned out great and my skin didn’t dry out! I have used the coconut oil by itself as lotion and in making the lotion bars and my skin seemed to get dry again in a short amount of time with both of those (even though I still like using the lotion bars and the sunscreen bars work well too). I read other posts stating that coconut oil can be drying if used in excess, thus I chose to substitute it in this recipe. Unfortunately I seem to have a reaction to shea butter, so that’s why I used the cocoa butter, plus, it has a nice fragrance so I didn’t add any essential oils this time. Next time I’m planning to use vanilla extract though :). Thank you so much!! (Hopefully this helps Paola 🙂 )

I am new to all of this but I came across this recipe and decided to give it a go. I ordered the ingredients from Amazon and I used White Beeswax pellets (not sure if that makes a difference?). My end product came out very waxy and hard so I was a bit disappointed. After reading the other comments here I went back and re-melted everything and added one more tablespoon of Shea Butter and then gradually added a teaspoon of Corn Starch to the mixture while it was still hot. As it cooled I got a plastic fork and then would stir the mixture as it cooled. Now it’s softer and much easier to work with so I would definitely recommend adding the Corn Starch. I may try using less Beeswax next time to see if that helps too. Thanks!

Your body’s skin is thicker and tougher than the skin on your face so companies can get away with putting fragrances and cheaper ingredients in a body lotion. Dont use these body lotions on your face. I am like you also, I just like to use one product for face and body and go! I use quickly on my face, then body, and I am ready to go.

I just tried this for the first time, very happy with the results! I would call it a body butter instead of lotion because of the consistency. I didn’t use any essential oils this first time but I might try next time!

    Hey there,

I am SO excited to make this lotion, however, when I ordered all the ingredients from Mountain Rose, I accidentally ordered Carnauba oil. Has anyone used this wax before for lotions? Will it work the same way?

    Thank you for your help!

I just wanted to say thanks for the great recipe. and i was wondering where you get your products? I cant find most of these items in my local stores, so i was going to buy from bulkapothecary but i wanted to check with you first.

Can you use calendula and chamomile tea bags instead of flowers for these recipes?

I love coconut oil for my teeth oil pulling and for my OCM but as a moistuizer, I find it drying. I was thinking of replacing the coconut oil for hemp seed oil. Because it can’t be heated, I would have to add it at the end and not reheat it. Also I would have to keep the main batch in the fridge so it would last. But do you think it would work? I have heard some good and bad about hemp seed oil, the bad mainly that it can go rancid quick if you don’t keep it in the fridge. I’m thinking the hemp oil would make it softer and easier to get out of the fridge container to put into small dark glass containers in the bathroom as i need them. Bottom line, do you think hemp oil would work in this recipe?

I have a recipe which uses emulsifying wax and vegetable glycerin, I would really love your opinion on these two ingredients… it makes a sorbolene style lotion which I love so much.
    Thank you!

I am hoping to smell primarily the essntial oils that I add. Is it ok to use refined coconut oil to avoid the strong coconut smell? Also – does cocoa butter smell like chocolate? – never used it before:)

    Thanks!

Wellness Mama….. I tried making this.. I do like it alot… however.. the beeswax gave it that under tone of honey scent which I do not like. Do you use white beeswax instead? Is that scent free? Thank you so much 🙂

Just wondering if you can also use this as a face lotion? I have made this lotion and absolutely love it!

Hi Wellness Mama, I was wondering how much of the vanilla extract I should add to the recipe so that it won’t smell too strong. Thank you

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

Start with about a 1/4 of a tsp and, once everything is melted together, see if the smell is to your liking. If you want to add more, you can simply put more in and melt it all together again in the same way.

Hey, would this recipe be fairly edible if I added in some flavor oils or extracts? And if so, how much would the coconut and almond oils effect the taste? “Bedroom” reasons lol. I’m trying to find a good DIY recipe like this, but I really don’t want it to end up tasting/smelling at all like coconut or almonds. Thanks!

Hi Wellness Mama, I was wondering if I am supposed to have all these little beads all over me from the lotion? The beeswax might have been the wrong kind? The lotion is great except for that. Please let me know if I should have used larger beeswax chunks, mine were tiny beads, or if this is normal. Thank you

I have a coconut allergy. Topically, the oil causes a breakout scarily similar to what you would see with Shingles. What do you suggest as a replacement?

  18. Rick Avatar

Made the lotion for my wife, she likes it but it seems to oily/greasy. Did I do something wrong or is that normal for this product?

    1. Cheery Avatar

That’s pretty normal. Next time you make it, try adding a tablespoon or so of arrowroot powder. Additionally, you may want to suggest she use a bit less, that helps reduce the greasy feeling as well.

I love this recipe!! I have been making this for awhile now, and no lotion I have ever used compares to this simple homemade lotion with only a few ingredients. I have made it with and without cocoa butter, and with is always better because the consistency is much nicer. It is so much better to use natural things rather than a lotion from the store with a whole bunch of things I cannot identify. Thank you for sharing this!

I made this yesteday and LOVE it!!!! The beeswax is so perfect at holding in moisture. I’ve washed my hands last night and most of the morning and I can still tell it’s doing the trick!!! I do have a question about it that maybe you can help with. I use bioidentical hrt in the for of an small oil drop I put on the back of my knee. Since the beeswax seems to create such a lasting, breathable barrier should I avoid putting it in the spot I’m going to put the BHRT since its seems to provide such a lasting barrier?
