If you’re still using store-bought lotion there are super easy natural alternatives that are fun to make! This DIY lotion recipe has three basic ingredients and only takes ten minutes to whip together.

The basic recipe is an ultra-moisturizing water-free version that lasts for years without preservatives. While lotion is technically a formulation of water and oil-based skincare ingredients, this one is oil-based. It feels more like a body butter and is great for dry skin.

Homemade Lotion

I discovered years ago that I could use natural ingredients to make my own skincare products and I haven’t looked back since! From homemade lip balm to whipped body butter I love making my own. Lotion bars were one of the first things I made and I’ve branched out to other kinds of lotion too. This version uses unrefined coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter to nourish skin deeply.

Most lotions use emulsifying wax to blend distilled water and carrier oils together. It can be tricky to do at home. Plus it requires preservatives to keep it from going bad! This DIY lotion skips that problem by eliminating the water. You can further extend the shelf life by using vitamin E. This antioxidant helps oils not go rancid as quickly.

Choosing a Carrier Oil

I use sweet almond oil for the carrier oil since it’s a middle of the road oil. It’s not as heavy as coconut oil, but it’s more moisturizing than something like grapeseed oil. You could replace it with whatever liquid carrier oil you prefer. Jojoba, olive oil, or avocado oil are also good options.

This lotion is ultra-moisturizing and more oily than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes. All the ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added.

Custom Lotion Making

Once you master the base recipe, have fun customizing your lotion to your skin type, skin conditions, and desired scent!

There are endless variations, but some of my favorites are:

  • Baby Lotion – Infuse the oil with dried calendula and chamomile before making the lotion.
  • Cooling Muscle Rub – Add peppermint, wintergreen, and ginger for sore muscles.
  • Anti-aging Face Lotion – Use argan oil and add lavender and patchouli essential oils.
  • Lavender and Vanilla Lotion – Add a few drops of lavender and a little natural vanilla extract.

Essential Oil Safety

So how many drops of essential oils should you add to your DIY lotion? It depends on the essential oil and your preference. If you add the optional shea butter, 45 drops of essential oil will be a 1% dilution. A 2% dilution is generally considered safe for skincare products like lotion.

If you like a really strong scent you could double the amount (to 2%). Or if you prefer a lighter scent or have more sensitive skin, you could cut the amount in half (or even less!). I avoid using essential oils on little ones, especially babies.

Certain oils like wintergreen, cinnamon, and lemongrass are harsher and need to be used in smaller amounts. Others, like grapefruit and lime, are phototoxic. Some of my favorite skin-friendly essential oils to use include:

Don’t Want to Make It?

If you want healthy lotion but don’t want to make it or don’t have the ingredients there are some good store-bought options. These lotions have clean ingredients and help hydrate thirsty skin:

Homemade DIY Lotion Recipe

Make smooth, luxurious lotion at home with almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and optional essential oils.
Prep Time20 minutes
Yield: 9 ounces
Author: Katie Wells

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter, in a double boiler. Or use a glass bowl on top of a simmering pan of water.
  • Stir occasionally as the ingredients melt.
  • Once the ingredients are completely melted, add the vitamin E oil and any essential oils or vanilla.
  • Pour into a glass jar or tin for storage and cool to room temperature. Small mason jars work perfectly for this. This will not pump well in a lotion pump!

Notes

  • A little goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and great for diaper rash, eczema, and for preventing stretch marks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 years.

Thanks for sharing, but I found this recipe way too oily. Is there a way to lessen how oily it is without adding water?

I love this recipe. I make it in small batches for my son’s eczema. Everything that I tried from the store, or pharmacy made him cry. Except I did find one store bought brand that was super expensive and basically a similar recipe. When I saw that worked, we made this and it has been awesome. Thanks for posting! We’ve tried the lipgloss recipe too for my daughter and that has been great.

Hello! I’m interested in making the rosewater and almond oil lotion. How would I go about with this recipe? Since its water and it would alter the shelf stability? Thank You!

    Hi Wellness Mama,

First of all I just love your website. I really admire you for doing all the products naturally of your own at home. I’m just a beginner. Going to try this lotion for the first time ever. I have a doubt n hope you would answer me. Can we use Frankenstein oil in this recipe? That is I’m very much new to this home made recipes. I have a very sensitive skin. Can you suggest some more combination of essential oils, because I read that Frankenstein oil is good for treating scars and blemishes too. I would love to try this recipe without water and just oils. Thanks in advance Mama. Keep serving us with your recipes. Love you Mama.

I don’t see how mold can be an issue if all you are doing is mixing various oils?

Thank you for this great recipe, all the women in my family suffer from very dry skin to the point of cracking and bleeding. My sisters didn’t think an all natural lotion would work so i started making this in small batches to give to them as gifts (because is worked so great for me) each with a different scent. Now I make about 6 to 7 batches a month for them. I really love your site. Thank you.

Do you have a suggestion how to make this without Beeswax? I have an allergy to propolis which can be in any bee product.
I can’t do Mango butter either due to my mango allergy.

I’m allergic to beeswax too. I was told Candalilla wax is safe (plant based) but the recipe works without the beeswax also.

Hi! I’m not sure where to buy beeswax, but I have pure beeswax candles and I was thinking of just scraping up the melted wax, would that work okay?

I wonder if the consistency of the cream depends from the outside temperature. My coco butter lotion gets very thick during the winter and thin during summer months.

  10. Kristi Avatar

Does anyone know how long it takes this recipe to thicken up? I made mine last night at around 8pm. It’s been sitting out for over 12 hours now and it’s still completely liquid??

    1. Mary Avatar

Mine thickened up right away. I followed the directions to a tee. Put part of it in a small jar to be used right away and and the rest in a larger jar that I kept in the refrigerator for later use. The portion I stored in the fridge was even better than the one I used right away– a little thicker and creamier. Try putting it in the refrigerator for awhile. But it sounds like you may have missed an ingredient?

Hi there. I’ve made this lotion with lavender and peppermint for 3 of my children…one of my children, age 10, struggles periodically with anxiety…do you recommend using ONLY single oils in this lotion OR can I use a pre-made essential oil blend…the same one that I diffuse at times to help before bedtime and days when his anxiety flares?

  12. Josie Avatar

Essential oils are all powerful medicinal herbs and should not be used in large amounts just to get a certain fragrance because some of them in large amounts can be absorbed through the skin and can be toxic. Some essential oils are skin irritants even though they have a wonderful fragrance and should not be used undiluted on the skin or in large amounts in lotions and creams or before sunbathing: Bergamot, Nutmeg, Melissa (Lemon Balm), Lemon Verbena (Louisa), Orange, Verbena, Lemongrass, Lemon, Ginger, Peppermint, Citronella and more. These should not be used on the skin of infants and small children. Citronella, commonly used as an insect repellant, gives off dangerous fumes which can cause neurological problems and chemical pneumonia when inhaled, especially by infants. Citronella should also not be used in aromatherapy for this reason. Here is good link for safety concerns using essential oils: https://naha.org/index.php/explore-aromatherapy/safety/

The essential oils that I am using do not maintain their scent when I add them to the rest of the ingredients. has anyone else experienced this. Can someone recommend some highly fragrant essential oils?

Hi! First of all I love your website!
I made this lotion today but without the cocoabutter (hasnt arrived yet) I doubled the shea butter. So tonight… Hubby and I watching The Voice, I apply the lotion, 10 mins later he says your face is all red!! My face was patchy red and my skin is not usually sensitive about anything. I think it was a reaction to the fats, my kids get it too when they get mayonaise on their face. Does this mean these lotions are a no no for me?? ???? I was so excited about making more but wouldnt dare to give it away as a gift either with the reaction I had…
P.s. Love the oil cleansing btw, been doing it for the past 3 days and amazing results straigth away.. So no sensitiveness there

Hi Katie! I made this recipe and it turned out wonderfully!!! Thanks for sharing.

Hello everyone and we are all so blessed to have that wonderful in our lives helping us all to be healthy! Thanks Katie! I have found that Rose hip oil is the best and it’s mixed with a little vitamin E as well. Rose Hips is a little dryer oil and I also added some Turmeric (outstanding with it’s healing properties) So awesome for people with Dermatitis, Eczema and Rosacea . It has almost cleared some spots on my face in just 3 days. The lady that added the corn starch was an excellent idea. I just mix mine daily and use it. It only take about five minutes to mix up.

    1. Anna Avatar

Doesn’t the turmeric stain your skin? I imagine a yellowish colorafter applying it?

      1. adriana Avatar

It does yellow your skin. I tried it once and it took a while to wash off the skin. From my personal experience, since I live in a cold climate, I would rather use turmeric when is warm and humid not to overdry my skin from scrubbing and washing the color 🙂

I made this lotion for the first time and used beeswax, coconut oil, vitamin e oil etc. It turned out pretty solid like the normal texture of coconut oil. It is really greasy and does not absorb well. Any suggestions?

Hi! So excited about this recipe. Just attempted my first batch & I’m not crazy about the turnout!! I’m in the process of creating a greener/cleaner home for my family of 5 & really hope to begin making all of our body products. Your website is amazing & full of ideas I’m excited to try. Any help troubleshooting would be great!! I used 4oz olive oil, 4 oz almond oil, 4oz coconut oil, 2- 1oz bars of beeswax, 1tsp Vitamin E oil, 2 tablespoons Shea butter, & Lavender EO. Followed the instructions & turned up with a really greasy creation. I can’t touch anything for a few minutes after applying. It also smells very strongly like beeswax (could be the type I used?). Was hoping for more of a body butter/lotion consistency instead of a salve. Any tips!! Thanks!!
