If you’re still using store-bought lotion there are super easy natural alternatives that are fun to make! This DIY lotion recipe has three basic ingredients and only takes ten minutes to whip together.

The basic recipe is an ultra-moisturizing water-free version that lasts for years without preservatives. While lotion is technically a formulation of water and oil-based skincare ingredients, this one is oil-based. It feels more like a body butter and is great for dry skin.

Homemade Lotion

I discovered years ago that I could use natural ingredients to make my own skincare products and I haven’t looked back since! From homemade lip balm to whipped body butter I love making my own. Lotion bars were one of the first things I made and I’ve branched out to other kinds of lotion too. This version uses unrefined coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter to nourish skin deeply.

Most lotions use emulsifying wax to blend distilled water and carrier oils together. It can be tricky to do at home. Plus it requires preservatives to keep it from going bad! This DIY lotion skips that problem by eliminating the water. You can further extend the shelf life by using vitamin E. This antioxidant helps oils not go rancid as quickly.

Choosing a Carrier Oil

I use sweet almond oil for the carrier oil since it’s a middle of the road oil. It’s not as heavy as coconut oil, but it’s more moisturizing than something like grapeseed oil. You could replace it with whatever liquid carrier oil you prefer. Jojoba, olive oil, or avocado oil are also good options.

This lotion is ultra-moisturizing and more oily than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes. All the ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added.

Custom Lotion Making

Once you master the base recipe, have fun customizing your lotion to your skin type, skin conditions, and desired scent!

There are endless variations, but some of my favorites are:

  • Baby Lotion – Infuse the oil with dried calendula and chamomile before making the lotion.
  • Cooling Muscle Rub – Add peppermint, wintergreen, and ginger for sore muscles.
  • Anti-aging Face Lotion – Use argan oil and add lavender and patchouli essential oils.
  • Lavender and Vanilla Lotion – Add a few drops of lavender and a little natural vanilla extract.

Essential Oil Safety

So how many drops of essential oils should you add to your DIY lotion? It depends on the essential oil and your preference. If you add the optional shea butter, 45 drops of essential oil will be a 1% dilution. A 2% dilution is generally considered safe for skincare products like lotion.

If you like a really strong scent you could double the amount (to 2%). Or if you prefer a lighter scent or have more sensitive skin, you could cut the amount in half (or even less!). I avoid using essential oils on little ones, especially babies.

Certain oils like wintergreen, cinnamon, and lemongrass are harsher and need to be used in smaller amounts. Others, like grapefruit and lime, are phototoxic. Some of my favorite skin-friendly essential oils to use include:

Don’t Want to Make It?

If you want healthy lotion but don’t want to make it or don’t have the ingredients there are some good store-bought options. These lotions have clean ingredients and help hydrate thirsty skin:

Homemade DIY Lotion Recipe

Make smooth, luxurious lotion at home with almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and optional essential oils.
Prep Time20 minutes
Yield: 9 ounces
Author: Katie Wells

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter, in a double boiler. Or use a glass bowl on top of a simmering pan of water.
  • Stir occasionally as the ingredients melt.
  • Once the ingredients are completely melted, add the vitamin E oil and any essential oils or vanilla.
  • Pour into a glass jar or tin for storage and cool to room temperature. Small mason jars work perfectly for this. This will not pump well in a lotion pump!

Notes

  • A little goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and great for diaper rash, eczema, and for preventing stretch marks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 years.

I really would like to try this recipe but am I’m getting as worried about fungus as I am about harmful chemicals…

Hello! Thank you for your post. I made my first batch of skin cream last night with your instructions. I used Hazelnut oil, coconut butter, shea butter, and argan oil, I scented it with a teaspoon of vanilla extract (pure orgainc extract) and patchouli essential oil. While I am pleased with the result, one thing is odd. The vanilla did not mix/ blend in with everythig else. I think it is the vanilla as it is dark and the cream is white. What could be causing this? Also, I did not use beeswax. What does this ingredient do? Thanks again! I made a small batch this time as I knew I would want to experiment again soon with different proportions/ ingredients-

Hello I am new to the all natural. I am very excited to start this change in my life. I have a few questions about the lotion. I made some following this recipe today. It came out very oily and had a strong olive oil smell. Did I do some thing wrong? Is there anything I can do different? Or can I fix what I have already made? And can I not use the olive oil? A strong olive oil smell makes me feel sick. Thanks.

I have made this lotion a number of times now. Just love it on my skin. I alter the beeswax, depending on if I am using it in summer or winter as I find it is much harder in winter.
I have thrown out all my old creams and now use this exclusively, face, hands and body, along with a dry brushing regime. My skin has never looked so good!

    THank you

This looks wonderful! The picture you show here makes it look quite thick. Can this recipe be used with a pump dispenser? If not, is there a simple adjustment I can make to the recipe so that I can use it in a pump dispenser? Thanks!

I have seen other recipes on line which begin with the fats as in this recipe, then add rosewater/ distilled water/ aloe vera juice to the fats in a blender. The water would make it a lotion while this version is a cream. That doesn’t guarantee they would work in a pump dispenser, though. Ideally, I would never touch my lotions/ creams in the jar; I would use a clean spoon or spatula to transfer them to my skin. If you google “home made lotion” or similar you will find many recipes for lotions.

Hi Katie! I am new to the scene as far as making our own health/beauty recipes goes, but I am really excited about all of these recipes! I think it’s amazing what you do and I hope to get there one day! We have 5 kids as well and are homeschooling! They are 9 months to 8 years old. I really don’t know how you do it! ???? I wanted to know if you could tell me how to make this for a baby? I know you mentioned at the top of the post that you have a favorite version with calendula and chamomile for baby and I just wanted to know how you would make that and what it consists of? I have some dried chamomile flowers. Thank you, I would really appreciate it!

I have been having issues with this drying my hands out. I have tried different variations with the coconut oil and also using almond oil and it keeps doing the same thing. Any tips?

I stumbled upon your website and am loving it! I have very dry skin and have used SO MANY lotions that either leave my skin greasy or not moisturized enough. I tried the coconut oil lotion recipe last night and was a bit confused. I followed the instructions to the T and when I took out the jar from the hot water, the oil sat on top of the beeswax. I did add a small amount of water and it solidified a bit more throughout the jar. The consistency is still really waxy rather than smooth like lotion as well as quite greasy. How can I make this concoction smoother and less waxy? Help me Wellness Mama! 🙂

I’ve made this lotion and love it! I plan to make some for my mother, aunt and cousins for Christmas. I did not add any essential oils to mine as I am sensitive to scents. I also do not plan to add essential oils to the lotion I make for family as I don’t know what they like. After I give them the oil (in a canning jar) can they reheat it and add their own essential oils later, if they want to?

    Hi,
I tried this body lotion at my home. But it was really disappointing to have a wax again at the end of the process. It cannot be used as a lotion. If we try to melt also, between the seconds in taking and applying it becomes wax in the fingers itself. Please suggest if there is a way out!

Can the olive oil be replaced by palm oil? Not fond of the olive oil scent.

I came across your blog cause I was looking for an alternative to store bought lotions for me and my kids. I like the smell of lavender and vanilla together can i mix it together or should I be using one oils at a time per batch? My kids are 4 & 6 can i use it on them or should I make a separate batch using only Calendula or Chamomile or both? Thanks!!

I tried this recipe yesterday and found it to be a bit too greasy. Perhaps because I used Shea Butter, too? I love the smell and texture, but want to cut the greasy effect on my face. How much oil should I eliminate? Also, would adding cornstarch, as some readers suggested, do the trick?

Thanks so much for your wonderful, chemical-free recipes!

I’ve made the lotion bars with great success, thank you! I’m going to give this a try now! How many drops of essential oils do you use for this ratio? Thank you!

Hey! I wanted to do the Rosewater and Almond oil one. I was just wondering when to add the Rosewater and, as I have seen the concern for mold, does Rosewater make it not last as long?

Thank you for sharing your recipe! I made the lotion but mine is a bit greasy feeling. I used Calendula infused sunflower oil instead of olive oil but followed the recipe otherwise. Is there a way to make this less greasy and more of a whipped, creamy lotion?

I have a question, I’m really new to this, I have everything except almond oil, but have apricot kernel oil. Can I use that as a replacement? Thanks for your recipe!
