If you’re still using store-bought lotion there are super easy natural alternatives that are fun to make! This DIY lotion recipe has three basic ingredients and only takes ten minutes to whip together.

The basic recipe is an ultra-moisturizing water-free version that lasts for years without preservatives. While lotion is technically a formulation of water and oil-based skincare ingredients, this one is oil-based. It feels more like a body butter and is great for dry skin.

Homemade Lotion

I discovered years ago that I could use natural ingredients to make my own skincare products and I haven’t looked back since! From homemade lip balm to whipped body butter I love making my own. Lotion bars were one of the first things I made and I’ve branched out to other kinds of lotion too. This version uses unrefined coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter to nourish skin deeply.

Most lotions use emulsifying wax to blend distilled water and carrier oils together. It can be tricky to do at home. Plus it requires preservatives to keep it from going bad! This DIY lotion skips that problem by eliminating the water. You can further extend the shelf life by using vitamin E. This antioxidant helps oils not go rancid as quickly.

Choosing a Carrier Oil

I use sweet almond oil for the carrier oil since it’s a middle of the road oil. It’s not as heavy as coconut oil, but it’s more moisturizing than something like grapeseed oil. You could replace it with whatever liquid carrier oil you prefer. Jojoba, olive oil, or avocado oil are also good options.

This lotion is ultra-moisturizing and more oily than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes. All the ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added.

Custom Lotion Making

Once you master the base recipe, have fun customizing your lotion to your skin type, skin conditions, and desired scent!

There are endless variations, but some of my favorites are:

  • Baby Lotion – Infuse the oil with dried calendula and chamomile before making the lotion.
  • Cooling Muscle Rub – Add peppermint, wintergreen, and ginger for sore muscles.
  • Anti-aging Face Lotion – Use argan oil and add lavender and patchouli essential oils.
  • Lavender and Vanilla Lotion – Add a few drops of lavender and a little natural vanilla extract.

Essential Oil Safety

So how many drops of essential oils should you add to your DIY lotion? It depends on the essential oil and your preference. If you add the optional shea butter, 45 drops of essential oil will be a 1% dilution. A 2% dilution is generally considered safe for skincare products like lotion.

If you like a really strong scent you could double the amount (to 2%). Or if you prefer a lighter scent or have more sensitive skin, you could cut the amount in half (or even less!). I avoid using essential oils on little ones, especially babies.

Certain oils like wintergreen, cinnamon, and lemongrass are harsher and need to be used in smaller amounts. Others, like grapefruit and lime, are phototoxic. Some of my favorite skin-friendly essential oils to use include:

Don’t Want to Make It?

If you want healthy lotion but don’t want to make it or don’t have the ingredients there are some good store-bought options. These lotions have clean ingredients and help hydrate thirsty skin:

Homemade DIY Lotion Recipe

Make smooth, luxurious lotion at home with almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and optional essential oils.
Prep Time20 minutes
Yield: 9 ounces
Author: Katie Wells

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter, in a double boiler. Or use a glass bowl on top of a simmering pan of water.
  • Stir occasionally as the ingredients melt.
  • Once the ingredients are completely melted, add the vitamin E oil and any essential oils or vanilla.
  • Pour into a glass jar or tin for storage and cool to room temperature. Small mason jars work perfectly for this. This will not pump well in a lotion pump!

Notes

  • A little goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and great for diaper rash, eczema, and for preventing stretch marks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 years.

How much vanilla extract would you suggest to add to this recipe?

The beeswax does make it thick. Perhaps I will half the beeswax next time and see how that turns out.

This is my absolute favorite beauty product Iv ever had!! I got the best local beeswax from my honey guy here in Piriápolis, Uruguay. It’s got a gorgeous dark yellow color and the scent is just yummy! My hubby uses it everyday for his crocodile skin, I don’t even have to ask him to. Made one as a gift then word got out and had to make for all my girlfriends as a farewell gifts, setting sail for the Caribbean!
    Love your work.

Made this for me and my hubby and we love it!!! Send some to my sis and she said it works!!! She has super duper dry skin…and so do I (especially because of where I live). My hubby doesn’t but he likes it as well! (He can just apply less). Thank u so much for putting this up online!! If I used olive oil, it is PERFECT for winter!!!! Without olive oil, it would dry later but still moisturizers nicely (just not as much as with olive oil). Well, my sis approved and I am going to send her the one with olive oil before winter comes in NYC!!! Lol! Hopefully it’ll keep her skin moisturized during winter!!! God bless and thank u for ur hard work <3

I made this lotion over the weekend and used jojoba oil instead of the almond or olive oil (was out of both), and used lavender essential oil. I also added about 1/2 cup arrowroot after reading the suggestion from another post. I used my hand mixer to stir after everything was melted . My lotions looks, feels, and smells like salve. What did I do wrong and how can I fix this?

I made this lotion on 2 separate counts and mine comes out in sort of a salve type consistency. How do you get the “whipped” look of the lotion in the bottom picture??

    Hey!
I just found your blog and this recipe seemed really interesting and easy to make! My lotion turned out more like the lotion bars, but i melt it down couple of times and added more coconut oil and olive oil and then it became really nice, although it is still in bars. I got really great idea to use ginger bread molds for shaping my lotion. Also the first version that i did, i used too much beeswax and then the product was more like chapstick, which was nice as well. As for the smell, i still havent tried any scent oils but i used to flavoured olive oil which gave my lotion really nice scent. The one i used was lemon olive oil, cant really say if other flaours would work as well, but lemon gave it nice but not too strong scent.

I made this lotion and used Mango butter instead of Shea butter. The lotion looked smooth until I dipped some out and it is lumpy. The little lumps melt on my skin but I am wondering what I did wrong or if I should have used my mixer? Also, used 15 drops of Sweet Orange oil and the lotion is really, really sweet smelling. I thought this might be due to the Mango butter. I’m new at this so just need a few pointers – thanks

I am hoping for some help. I am totally new to the essential oils stuff. I am trying to make “sleep cream” for my daughters and my husband. I was given a recipe by a friend for 1/3 cup of coconut oil and 15 drops cedarwood, lavendar and peace and calming respectively. I mixed it and it is the consistency of oil that you would cook with. It is WAY too greasy for this momma! My husband is currently overseas and I want to send him some but need to make some true “lotion”. I really need a recipe “dumbed” down since I am SO new to this….help please!!!!!!!

THANK YOU WELLNESS MAMA! I just made the coconut oil lotion, it turned out awesome! Can you recommend an essential oil I can add to my next batch. My ingredients: almond oil, coconut oil, pure cocoa butter & beeswax. The aroma is divine!

I have noticed that all I really smell is the olive oil. And no matter what or how much I put in I can not achieve a good smell without it being way over powering. Not a fan of lavender or flowery smells and that’s the only one that I can really get to cover it. Have tried all citrus and Lavender. Any suggestions on what to try mixing for a good smell??!!??!!?? HELP!

Hi! This was my first recipe off of your website. I have questions! Mine doesn’t look like the pic at all, its hard as a rock. I measured the beeswax by weight based off of a conversion because its also very hard and I can’t measure it in a cup or spoon. .13 pounds was what I used. Should I melt this back down and add more oils to get a soft and smooth lotion? Please help! It feels more like a hard lip balm than lotion.

hi, i’ve tried out many of your DIY recipes & it worked out well. what would be the recommended shelf life for the homemade lotion?

do u think it’s necessary for us to add preservatives to our DIY products for personal use? will adding Vitamin E be sufficient on its own? so far i have not encounter any problem with my DIY products for i usually made them in small batches.

    thank u.

I think my skin is well moisturized but since I’m 40+ – I also needed to start using a better moisturizer. I tried the one you recommended, but my dermatologist recommended the Somaluxe Moisturizer – and he was right – its EXCELLENT for dry skin. It’s non-greasy and if you have very dry skin and you need the extra moisturizer, I think you’ll the Somaluxe Moisturizer. Your make-up glides over it, and many others suggest using it on elbows and other troubled spots. . ..

    Hi,
Stopping by from AZmomma.com and I tried this recipe over the weekend. It was super easy to do, quick and turned out great. I was looking to sell essential oils at my local farmers market, but they needed to be local and my oils are not. But instead I found local bees wax and olive oil and made this. I think it will also be easy for people to be introduced to oils without the hassle of trying to mix it themselves and a very nourishing blend!

I love this recipe! I saw people saying theirs came out hard I found if I stir it with a fork while it’s cooling it makes it into a lotion consistency. 🙂

Thank you so much for this! I plan to use this recipe very soon 😀
I just have a quick question though- it might be kind of silly but is it recommended to refrigerate this lotion after making it? Or would that completely solidify the oils? There are other natural products that have to be chilled or they’ll get moldy so I wanted to clarify if this lotion recipe is one that also needs refrigeration.
    Thanks for your article!

Can I add Urea to the mix for an exfoliant. I found some Urea in powder form on Amazon. Or, is there a natural exfoliant/humectant to add to the lotion? I am VERY new to this and appreciate your expertise. 🙂

Thank you so much for posting this recipe! I have tried everything for my son’s Eczema and nothing worked. I made this lotion using olive oil, beeswax, coconut oil,and shea butter with about 6 drops of Frankincense oil and I applied it generously to his skin at bedtime and the next morning his eczema was gone! 🙂 now I only use this on all my kids and grandkids and myself.
