If you’re still using store-bought lotion there are super easy natural alternatives that are fun to make! This DIY lotion recipe has three basic ingredients and only takes ten minutes to whip together.

The basic recipe is an ultra-moisturizing water-free version that lasts for years without preservatives. While lotion is technically a formulation of water and oil-based skincare ingredients, this one is oil-based. It feels more like a body butter and is great for dry skin.

Homemade Lotion

I discovered years ago that I could use natural ingredients to make my own skincare products and I haven’t looked back since! From homemade lip balm to whipped body butter I love making my own. Lotion bars were one of the first things I made and I’ve branched out to other kinds of lotion too. This version uses unrefined coconut oil, almond oil, and shea butter to nourish skin deeply.

Most lotions use emulsifying wax to blend distilled water and carrier oils together. It can be tricky to do at home. Plus it requires preservatives to keep it from going bad! This DIY lotion skips that problem by eliminating the water. You can further extend the shelf life by using vitamin E. This antioxidant helps oils not go rancid as quickly.

Choosing a Carrier Oil

I use sweet almond oil for the carrier oil since it’s a middle of the road oil. It’s not as heavy as coconut oil, but it’s more moisturizing than something like grapeseed oil. You could replace it with whatever liquid carrier oil you prefer. Jojoba, olive oil, or avocado oil are also good options.

This lotion is ultra-moisturizing and more oily than water-based lotions so you won’t need to use as much. It also has a longer shelf life than some homemade lotion recipes. All the ingredients are already shelf stable and no water is added.

Custom Lotion Making

Once you master the base recipe, have fun customizing your lotion to your skin type, skin conditions, and desired scent!

There are endless variations, but some of my favorites are:

  • Baby Lotion – Infuse the oil with dried calendula and chamomile before making the lotion.
  • Cooling Muscle Rub – Add peppermint, wintergreen, and ginger for sore muscles.
  • Anti-aging Face Lotion – Use argan oil and add lavender and patchouli essential oils.
  • Lavender and Vanilla Lotion – Add a few drops of lavender and a little natural vanilla extract.

Essential Oil Safety

So how many drops of essential oils should you add to your DIY lotion? It depends on the essential oil and your preference. If you add the optional shea butter, 45 drops of essential oil will be a 1% dilution. A 2% dilution is generally considered safe for skincare products like lotion.

If you like a really strong scent you could double the amount (to 2%). Or if you prefer a lighter scent or have more sensitive skin, you could cut the amount in half (or even less!). I avoid using essential oils on little ones, especially babies.

Certain oils like wintergreen, cinnamon, and lemongrass are harsher and need to be used in smaller amounts. Others, like grapefruit and lime, are phototoxic. Some of my favorite skin-friendly essential oils to use include:

Don’t Want to Make It?

If you want healthy lotion but don’t want to make it or don’t have the ingredients there are some good store-bought options. These lotions have clean ingredients and help hydrate thirsty skin:

Homemade DIY Lotion Recipe

Make smooth, luxurious lotion at home with almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and optional essential oils.
Prep Time20 minutes
Yield: 9 ounces
Author: Katie Wells

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the almond oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea or cocoa butter, in a double boiler. Or use a glass bowl on top of a simmering pan of water.
  • Stir occasionally as the ingredients melt.
  • Once the ingredients are completely melted, add the vitamin E oil and any essential oils or vanilla.
  • Pour into a glass jar or tin for storage and cool to room temperature. Small mason jars work perfectly for this. This will not pump well in a lotion pump!

Notes

  • A little goes a long way! This lotion is incredibly nourishing and great for diaper rash, eczema, and for preventing stretch marks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place for up to 1-2 years.

I’m sure this is a silly question, but is there any major differences between yellow and white beeswax? Thanks

I love this cream and have been using it for months. My only issue is that it sits on my face and does not absorb. When I use my phone to make a call, it gets covered in a film of oil. Also if I ever touch my face my fingers come away covered in oil. Is there any way to avoid this?
    Thank you!

Thanks for this delicious recipe, while it feels like I use this by the bucket it has helped me get through a stretching belly, swelling feet, and sore muscles from pregnancy. It’s much appreciated and will continue to be a staple in our home.

I use coconut oil a lot- can I just add an essential oil to it? what would be the healthiest/easiest lotion to make? thanks so much!

    Hi, Katie.

Thanks so much for the lovely recipe and the wonderful way you give your experience freely.

I am wondering if you’ve ever tried this recipe with Kokum Butter (on Mountain Rose website)… it says it has a lot of properties for regenerating tired skin cells and would be good for healing the skin. I have very dry skin and my daughter has excema, so I am wondering if it might be better for us to make the lotion with Kokum over Shea or Coco Butter.

My question is: if I make the lotion with Kokum butter, should I modify any of the other ingredient amounts since Kokum Butter is harder than the others?

    Thanks!!

    Hi.
This looks like a fantastic recipe and I’d love to give it a go but coming from the UK I’m not familiar with the cup measuring system. I looked on a few conversion sites but it seems to differ based on whats being measured. Are you able go provide either metric or imperial weight measurements. Thank you very much

Hello! Thank you so much for the recipe. I can’t wait to try it. I do have one question though. Is the beeswax you use to make this lotion the same kind that can be used for candle making? I’ve seen beeswax in my local hobby lobby but it’s in the candle making section. Would this one be the same or is there a specific kind? Thank you!

    Hi
I just made sunscreen lotion using this recipe the other day. I decided to add glycerin which automatically thickened it. I know glycerin is good for skin so that’s the only reason I added it. Thickening the mixture is an added bonus. If you have any more info I’d appreciate it if you shared. I also added about 2-3 teaspoons of organic raw honey. Figured what’s not good about honey plus it’s antibacterial properties might extend shelf life/prevent weird things to grow lol.
My lotion held great in the hot sun yesterday (temp. was about 80F) and since it’s sunscreen it’s also very water resistant. Very easy to apply as well.

    Thanks for the wonderful recipe!
Now I want to use lanolin too ? is it a good idea to add lanolin also or would it not be recommended to mix it in this lotion?
If I can use it, how much should I use with this recipe, I am guessing a tablespoon might be good.

Hi, I’m currently making your diaper cream which I’m looking forward to using. I would also like to make your lotion for baby, but I could only find white beeswax beads at my local organic store. Will they work or do I have to have the golden wax? I’m not sure if these beads aren’t intended for babies skin. Thanks.

Hello there. Thanks Katie- Wellness Mama for this very easy-to-follow recipe. Just made my one last night using the same measurement as you stated, I’ve used almond oil instead of olive oil, and the result is like the best than other commercial lotion. I love your Site!

Is there a way to do this with a substitution for the beeswax? I don’t use animal-derived products. Could I use raw, whipped cocoa butter maybe? I used to use that as-is as a lotion, but it made me a little too greasy before it absorbed in….

Hello. I just made this lotion. I’ve found the smell of Beeswax is very over powering. I used lavender essential oil for the recipe. Do you have any suggestion to eliminate that? Also any opinion on extra virgin oil vs regular olive oil? Which do you prefer olive oil or almond oil? Thank you!

Question: I’m sorry if this has already been asked but I made the recipe and loved everything about it except, the smell! I substituted Shea butter for the coconut oil. The only essential oil I put in was lemon. I went with the olive oil and reduced the beeswax a little. Any ideas on why it smells like burnt rubber? I am still learning about these things. Thanks for any help!

Okay, I figured this out myself. Just to keep coconut oil in the recipe instead of just replacing with shea butter. Smells so much better.

Hi, I am trying to figure out what the best sweet almond oil to buy and vitamin E oil to buy for this recipe. What brands do you use and are they organic. I am making this for my 1 year old little girl.

    thank you,

Ok I am a student in chemistry class, and we are in the process of attempting to make an all natural lotion for combination type skin. We already have beezewax from our teacher, but we don”t have to use it. We are wanting our lotion to smell like shea and coconut. Do you have any suggestions of ingrediants and how to make this?
