I’ve been experimenting a lot with castor oil lately as a natural beauty remedy. I already use it in my oil cleansing blend each day, and I’m enjoying the results from using castor oil packs on my skin.

Years ago, a friend mentioned that she loved castor oil for hair and eyelashes. I was really skeptical because castor oil has a very thick and sticky consistency that I couldn’t imagine using in hair. I did some research and found out that I had been seriously missing out on a simple and really effective traditional beauty remedy…

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair and Skin

Castor oil is an age-old beauty treatment that has been largely replaced over time by fancier beauty products with more ingredients and a bigger price tag.

Castor oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties and is high in vitamin E, minerals, proteins, and omega-6 and -9 beneficial fatty acids. Its unusually high ricinoleic acid ratio makes it beneficial to skin and hair.

In fact, castor oil has traditionally been used topically for acne and other skin conditions, as well as hair loss, rashes, and more. If you want to try it for skincare, I recommend this handcrafted castor oil.

What Does Castor Oil Do for the Hair?

Castor oil can be used on the scalp to help prevent and remedy hair loss and it is effective at this for several reasons. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it beneficial against follliculitus, dandruff, and scalp infections and its ricinoleic acid content helps increase circulation to the scalp and improve hair growth.

Ricinoleic acid is also said to help balance scalp pH which can also help replenish the scalp’s natural oils and undo some of the damage of harsh chemical hair products (and even damage from no-poo, due to over alkalinity). The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy.

“Three Times the Growth!”

How to do a castor oil treatment for natural hair and eyelash growth- simple natural remedy

There are hundreds of testimonials from people who used castor oil to increase their hair growth 3-5 times the normal rate. A friend of mine was struggling with postpartum hair loss and even once her hair loss slowed, regrowing her hair was difficult.

She measured her hair growth for a month and it grew almost half an inch. The next month, after using castor oil hair treatments twice a week, her hair had grown almost 2 inches. She tested this again the following month and noticed the same result and that her hair was dramatically thicker.

What Type of Castor Oil for Hair?

There are several options for castor oil hair treatments. I prefer to make my own.

To make my own, I mix castor oil with another hair-healthy oil (options listed below) and herbs to help support scalp health. Unrefined and cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil is preferred.

Castor oil is extremely thick and viscous so I prefer to mix with jojoba or argan oil in a glass dropper bottle for easy application.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

There is a special type of castor oil called Jamaican black castor oil that has extremely good reviews. I tried it as well and it seemed to work about the same as regular castor oil on my hair, but it seems that it might provide additional benefit for those with thick or dry hair (my hair is fine/oily).

How to Use Castor Oil Treatments on Hair

Castor oil can be very beneficial for hair growth if used correctly. Small amounts of plain oil can be used for an all-over treatment. Like many things in life, more is not always better, and only a few drops are needed per treatment. The additional oils are completely optional.

How Often

I personally use this castor oil 1-2 times per week. It can be used more often, though I didn’t see any increased results with using it daily.

When to Use

I’ve found that this treatment works better on damp but not wet hair. I keep a spray bottle of water in the bathroom and just spritz my roots before applying.

How to use castor oil for thicker and longer hair naturally

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow.

How to Remove the Oil

Removing the castor oil can be difficult, especially with natural shampoos. I’ve found that using a small amount and leaving it on overnight will result in most of the oil absorbing into the hair and scalp and make cleanup easier. In fact, I’ve been able to use dry shampoo and not wash on a few occasions. When I do shampoo, I use a natural shampoo or mud shampoo as normal.

An alternate way is to crack an egg and whisk until smooth and then massage the egg into the scalp. This helps break down the oil and adds additional nutrients to the hair. It is messy though, so I’d recommend doing this in the shower.

Another less-messy way is to condition your hair before getting in the shower, massaging conditioner into the scalp to help remove the castor oil. Then, shampoo as usual.

Important Notes:

With any new oil, herb, or product, test a tiny amount on your inner arm to make sure you don’t have a reaction. While reactions are rare, some people will notice irritation from castor oil.

I’ve also used this in combination with my hair growth serum with great results. (I use the serum first to dampen hair, then apply the castor oil.)

It is also important to support the body nutritionally and hormonally with hair loss, as this can often be a sign of an internal problem.

BONUS TIP: I rub a tiny amount of castor oil on my eyelids at night to help eyelash growth as well. It is also part of my eyelash growth serum recipe.

Castor Oil Hair Serum Recipe

A mix of castor oil and jojoba will make a hair serum to help your hair grow faster, stronger, and smoother.

Materials

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a dark-colored dropper bottle.
  • Shake to mix.
  • Use the dropper to apply to the scalp. I part my hair right above the ear on one side, add a few drops of castor oil, part again about ½ inch from that part, add more castor oil, and so on until I’ve coated my whole scalp.
  • Then, I massage for 5 minutes to make sure entire scalp is coated and to help increase circulation.

Notes

This will make enough for 5+ uses depending on the length of your hair.
If you’re not a fan of using castor oil, some people have found coconut oil for hair to be a better fit.
For best hair health, I recommed using the above with Wellnesse Shampoo and Conditioner (from yours truly!), which I formulated to meet all of my criteria for safe, non-toxic, and naturally nourishing hair care.

My Own Results with Castor Oil…

Last year, when I was under extreme stress for a short period of time (finishing my book *ahem*), I noticed increased hair loss. My Hashimoto’s makes me more susceptible to hair loss when I’m under stress, and I was stressed about my hair loss (vicious cycle).

To combat this, I experimented with natural castor oil treatments both alone and mixed with other oils. I too noticed that my hair seemed stronger and that there was definitely less hair in my brush each day after a few weeks of castor oil treatments. Additionally, I started seeing tiny new hairs all around my hair line.

Random observation:

I split my head open when I was younger, requiring 8 staples in my scalp. Where the scar is, I have a patch of super-curly hair that falls in a perfect ringlet, even though the rest of my hair is wavy/straight. The castor oil seemed to help make this hair patch smoother, though it grew at a faster rate than the rest of my hair.

Now, I’ve made these castor oil hair treatments a regular part of my weekly routine and often do them at night, while wearing my blue blocker glasses and reading or watching a movie with my hubby.

I don’t even remember where I first heard about carrot oil for hair growth. But after extensive research, your help included, I decided to go for it.
I’ve always had long beautiful hair, my grandmother is a professional stylist and always gives me high quality shampoos/conditioners.
Two years ago my hair was down to my butt when one day I had the idiotic idea of trying to trim it myself. Of course it didn’t go well and I ended up lopping off all of my hair up past my shoulders! My hair had always grown quickly but after some stuff happened I developed a moderate drinking problem and gave up caring about the inside of my body so my hair grew back at the rate of a snail.
After about a year half of this I got myself back together started eating right again and was taking better care of myself but my hair, alough soft and shiny, was still just barely touching my shoulders. In January I decided to start using a castor oil/extra virgin olive oil on my head once a week and now 5 months later my hair has grown more than it did for the whole year and a half previously. It’s half way down my back. And what’s more is in late January about three weeks after I started doing this I went to Texas to see my family and everyone in my family could not believe how great my hair looked!! One of my aunts even said that it was as shiny as a TV commercial.
So I did an experiment and in February and March I didn’t use any castor on my hair and just took care of it with hair product and it virtually stopped growing, maintained the health for a while but even by the end of March that started to fade and I even started losing hair and noticed grays. Which was weird because I’m 26.
So since then I’ve began using the castor oil/olive oil treatment again. I am actually sitting with castor oil in my hair right now.
I mix it with extra virgin olive oil to “water it down” so to speak because castor oil is so viscous. I’m half Mexican half Northern irish so everyone on either side of my family has long thick dark beautiful hair. So losing/having thin unattractive hair is almost a sin in my family. Especially with my grandma. She is so impressed with my hair treatment that she started suggesting it to her clients!

The one you linked to is a hair food that contains castor oil and some other helpful oils and shea butter. The other one I linked to is just pure castor oil. I’ve had good results with both of them, so it would be up to you personal preference if you wanted a thicker product with added shea buter or not.

Hi! Great stuff here! Thank you! Do you find that your much less expensive blue=blockers are the same as “real” ones? I have a pair of yellow ones for night driving. Do you think they would work? :

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

I did notice a difference with the less expensive ones. The more expensive ones may block a little bit more of the blue light, but the less expensive ones definitely blocked enough to make a difference for me.

If you add a bit of emu oil to the recipe (1 tsp.) it will make it even more effective, as emu oil is the only one of those ingredients that is able to penetrate into all 7 layers of the skin, so it can carry other ingredients with it.

I have recently started taking Natures Plus Age Loss Hair Support & my hair is really starting to grow fast & thicker. The store where I buy my vitamins told me about it & said that they have teens who are losing their hair as well as men coming in to get it. Try that as well as the castor oil & I think u will see a big improvement.

Can you help me find where to buy it?

  6. Heidi Avatar

Ok, I have used this recipe many times, and I swear it used to have coconut oil…did you change it? Is there a way to get the one with the coconut oil from you? My hair really liked it. 🙂

    1. Marissa Avatar

I was just looking this recipe up again as I made it a few months ago and wanted to make another batch and I also thought it had coconut oil in it. I can’t remember what ratio I used last time but I am pretty sure it had the Black Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, and Jojoba Oil.

    2. Marissa Avatar

I just posted stating that I came here looking for the recipe and noticed the coconut oil was missing too. I found the recipe that I used a few months ago and it was as follows:

      3 Tablespoons of Castor Oil
      1 Tablespoon Jajoba Oil
      1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil

I’m pretty sure that was the same recipe that used to be on here. I’m not sure why the coconut oil is now omitted but I thought I would follow-up in case it helps you out.

    Hi All,

I am planning to mix Castor Oil, Almond Sweet Oil and Rosemary Oil for Hair Loss and growth. Is it a good mixture to apply for hair loss? . Also can you please suggest ratio of all three oils to be mixed to apply for Hair.

I have the Mirena IUD for 1 year and 2 months. I have read many bad opinions about this anticonceptive. I think that is causing me hair loss because of the hormonal changes. Will the Jamaican Black Castor Oil works for me? Or should I remove Mirena and then try the JBCO? Any recommendations please? Thank you!!

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

It definitely helps with hair loss, but it can’t help hormones, so you would still be fighting an uphill battle if the Mirena is contributing to the hair loss.

      1. Betty Avatar

Thanks for your response! I will remove the Mirena just in case is the problem. And I will continue with the Castor Oil for better results. I’ll be in touch with the results!!

        1. Sam Avatar

          Hi Betty,
I have read that the Mirena works by flooding your system with synthetic progesterone which causes your body to stop making sufficient quantities of natural progesterone, and in response your hormones get out of balance, with oestrogen becoming dominant in your system. Oestrogen dominance can then lead to other issues including hair loss. It may be worth your while researching how you can naturally raise your natural progesterone level, which will cause your oestrogen to come back into balance. This is apparently required even though you remove the Mirena. I am not a doctor, but I have done some research on this myself as I have a Mirena and am now looking at how I can get my natural progesterone level raised before I get oestrogen dominance myself!

Hi, i just started using castor oil mix with coconut oil for my hair, ard a week. I used the liquid form of coconut oil not the (sort of) solid white form. The problem is, my hair dropped when i applied the oil. Like it literally drop in that moment.. And when i wash the oil off, more hair dropped. Abt 2x more than usual. But the next day, few strands dropped when i shower. Probably less than 10. Since i just started, Is this normal? Did i use the wrong form of coconut oil? Or i do have to watch what i eat as well? Pls reply and help.. My hair stopped growing years ago and im just 19.. Sometimes Im embarrassed when i go out. I cant find a right hairstyle that suits me bc my hair is too thin 🙁

    1. Wellness Mama Avatar

I haven’t had that type of reaction, so I’m not sure, but wonder if it could be an intolerance of some kind to one or the other of the oils. Either way, diet and internal factors are definitely important for hair health and all aspects of health. I hope you are able to find answers soon!

Hi everybody. I have one question. I’m a dude and I recently started using castor oil because my precious hair is thinning 🙁 now even after successfully using minoxidil for a couple of years. So now I’m gradually moving to castor oil use (and I also want to try kemiri aka candlenut oil later after I finish this bottle). I’ve read a couple of times that girls use it twice a week (including Wellness Mama) and i have been using it every other day (overnight). Is there a limit to how many times a week you should use it and how many hours a night?…

My scalp and hair are oily .. I have very thin hair and there is no hair growth from past 10 year. My hair growth stopped after a certain time. I’ve tried many things… Please tell me a home remedy and which oil should I use for massage? Is castor oil is good for oily scalp?

      1. Preeti Avatar

Thanks… I will definitely use it.. i have ordered Rosemary and castor oil.. could u suggest the quantity of castor oil, rosemary oil and coconut oil for a proper mixture??

My hair only grows a certain length and then stops. It is also damaged from coloring and using hot tools. Has anyone used the Hair Support from Rocky Mountain Oils? It says it contains Rosemary, Ylang Ylang, Ravintsara, Cedarwood Holy Basil and Sage. How would you mix this with coconut oil, castor oil and jojoba? What would be the measurements? I’m new to using oils and have no idea how to determine the amounts to mix. I have also seen on websites to massage into the scalp and work into the rest of the hair. Is this correct?

  14. Dilly Avatar

Hi, I made a hair oil with 5 drops of lavender, 5 drops of rosemary 5 drops of tea tree mixed with 99ml of virgin coconut oil and stored in a plastic bottle. The first few days it really helped hair fall. But after around 2 weeks usage of the oil causes more hair fall.. I gave some samples to friends and results are similar. I am worried.. What might be the reason? and how can I develop my formula to be effective?

I am so trying this on my hair. Thank you for the recipe.
But for those of you who want to try for LABOR, I hope you can 100% guarantee that you will not end up with an epidural because if you do get an epidural, then I, as a labor nurse, can 75% guarantee you that the castor oil will continue to work it’s magic, while you have little control, no matter if Great Aunt Pearl is visiting with Granny Ethel and your 3 little nephews. The good part though is that the sounds and smells will send the children into long fits of giggles and other family members will not come and see you until well after the baby is safely at home;)

    1. Cindy Avatar

Doctors are generally clueless and will just blame everything on stress. The truth is, thinning hair is usually due to the thyroid being hypothyroid. Once it goes hypothyroid, it messes with the female hormones and you lose your hair. As well, it could just be menopause causing the same hormone problems. Do you also have the symptoms of being freezing cold when others are warm? Super tired and need frequent naps? Sleep 14+ hours but still wake up tired and needing more sleep? Those are signs of low thyroid. Also, do you not sweat much? Do you never gag when brushing your teeth? Not sweating easily and having no gag reflex are signs of low thyroid. Also, is your blood pressure and cholesterol high? Low thyroid. Go to an endocrinologist, not a general practice doctor. Studies show it takes women an average of 10 years to get a hypothyroid diagnosis because doctors still think women make up their symptoms. You will likely be offered Prozac by most doctors…. So…forget them and go to an endocrinologist. PS, I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and have become an expert in my disease by reading the latest studies. I’m also a nurse. Doctors don’t have time to read studies anymore. Do your homework. No one will watch out for your health except you.

to add a note to this, ever since i saw this post and started using caster oil on my hair i just out the oil straight on my hair dry. i was doing some research and i found that you NEED to add water first to get the mostutizing benefits because oil is grease, not mousture. water is mousture and oik traps moisture. so if doing fkr moustrizing benefits water first oil second. that also is the case for add oil to skin. also scraping away dead skin cells through a hair and skin exfolation first allows for actual absorption of oil. other wise your just smothering it around on dead skin cells.
