I recently saw an ad from a local spa about their “pumpkin spice spa experience for Fall” that included a pumpkin spice face mask treatment “with ingredients like pumpkin, honey, cinnamon and healing clays.”
I’m not one to spend $125 to have someone else paint pumpkin on my face, but thought this would be a fun recipe to recreate and do at home with my daughters. We’d made homemade facial masks and spa treatments before and this one seemed fun to try! Especially right now when it seems that pumpkin spice has taken over everything, this is a fun recipe to get the scents of Fall!
Pumpkin Spice … On Your Face
The spa ad I saw claimed that pumpkin is great for skin. Pumpkin contains Vitamin C, Vitamin A and zinc. It also contains enzymes and antioxidants that create an effect similar to an alpha-hydroxy treatment. I figured it was worth a try and pumpkins are inexpensive when in season.
This recipe works with fresh pumpkin puree or canned pumpkin.
Add Healing Clays
Clay is naturally soothing and helps exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. I used Bentonite clay but any clay that is safe for skin use will work.
Honey is soothing and nourishing to skin and makes a great gently facial cleanser on its own. Its addition to this mask helps soften and brighten skin.
If you have clay on hand, it is also great for doing a hair detox or an armpit detox.
Plus Cinnamon for Antioxidants
Cinnamon is also very high in antioxidants and adds a wonderful scent and slight warming action to this mask.
NOTE: go easy on the cinnamon. A little goes a long way. Test on your arm first if you have sensitive skin or before using on children. You can easily omit the cinnamon, or if you want to change the scent and still get the results, use another spice like cumin, which is also excellent for skin
Pumpkin Spice Face Mask Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin puree, fresh or organic canned or carton (like this one)
- 1 teaspoon raw honey
- 1/2 teaspoon bentonite clay
- 1/4 teaspoon or less cinnamon powder (optional- do not use on sensitive skin)
How to Make the Pumpkin Spice Mask
- Mix all ingredients in a small bowl.
- Apply to face in a gentle, circular motion.
- Leave on for 5 minutes and wash off with a warm, wet washcloth.
NOTE: This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to make a larger batch, but a little bit goes a long way. This was enough for me and two of my daughters to use. I do not recommend making this and storing it.
