Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe – Easy and Inexpensive!

Ever checked the ingredients on your baby wipes? Yeah, I hadn’t either. Cosmetics Database gives you a complete list and a hazard rating of the different brands of wipes. For instance:

Pampers Clean and Go Wipes Contain:

Water, Disodium EDTA, Xanthan Gum, Caprylic Triglyceride, PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Benzyl Alcohol, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Sodium Hydroxymethlyglycinate, Citric Acid, Fragrance

Clean and Go Wipes are given a 5 for hazard (out of 10) and warnings include possible allergies, immunotoxicity and organ system toxicity. No thanks!

Huggies Cucumber and Green Tea Wipes

Ingredients: Water, Potassium Laureth Phosphate, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, DMDM Hydantoin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Methylparaben, Malic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Phenoxyethanol, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Fragrance

These wipes have a hazard rating of 7 and ingredients have been linked to cancer, immunotoxicity, allergies, developmental problems, reproductive toxicity, organ dysfunction, endocrine disruption and cellular changes.

I used these wipes for years, figuring that if they were made for a newborn’s skin, they must be safe. Apparently not!

Are There Safe Alternatives?

My discovery of what was in baby wipes led to a search for healthier alternatives. I found out that there are natural alternatives, including wipes made from bamboo, but they are expensive! I stumbled on some recipes for homemade baby wipes, but they suggested using baby oil (mineral oil) and baby lotion- check those out on Cosmetics Database too. I figured that if you could make your own with those ingredients, you could make a healthy version too!

After much trial and error (mainly error), I finally have a great recipe for baby wipes that after using it on two kids for several weeks, has shown no irritation. A side benefit to my wipe making experiment is that homemade wipes are a lot cheaper. When I buy ingredients in bulk, the wipes end up costing less than one cent each, saving us almost $200 a year with two in diapers. Healthier and cheaper- I’ll take it!

Homemade Baby Wipe Ingredients:

Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Ingredients1 300x225 Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe Easy and Inexpensive!

  • 1 roll of heavy duty paper towels (Note: I use Bounty for wipes. I don’t use them in my kitchen, but cheap paper towels do not work for wipes… I’ve tried)
  • Rubbermaid #6 or #8 container- (Old wipes containers,  plastic shoe box containers, old plastic coffee containers or empty gallon plastic ice cream buckets also work. )
  • 1 3/4 cups boiled water (or distilled)-cooled but still warm – (can just use regular water if you use them in less than a week like we do)
  • 1 Tablespoon of pure aloe vera- check the ingredients
  • 1 Tablespoon of pure Witch Hazel Extract
  • 2 Tablespoons of Liquid Castille Soap (I use Dr. Bronner’s)
  • 10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract or 2 capsules of Vitamin E (optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Olive or Almond Oil (optional)
  • Essential Oils of choice (optional- I use 6 drops each of orange and lavender)

How to Make Homemade Natural Baby Wipes

Homemade paper towel baby wipes 300x225 Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe Easy and Inexpensive!

  1. Cut the roll of paper towels in half using a sharp knife
  2. If using a plastic shoe box or old wipe container, accordion fold the wipes into the container. If using a Rubbermaid #6 container (I highly recommend), place the wipes, cut side down in container.
  3. In bowl or quart size jar mix the water, aloe, witch hazel, castille soap, GSE/Vitamin E and oil and stir.
  4. Add essential oils if desired and stir.
  5. Pour over paper towels in container and let absorb- this takes about 5-10 minutes.
  6. Flip the container over to make sure wipes are well soaked.
  7. If using Rubbermaid container, pull the cardboard roll out from the inside This should also pull the innermost wipe out and start them for you. Depending on the brand of paper towels you use, you might have to experiment with the amount of water to get the right amount.
  8. Use as you would regular wipes, and smile, knowing you are not causing your beautiful child any future health problems!
  9. Note: If your child has extremely sensitive skin, you may need to leave out the essential oils or use calendula or chamomile.

Reusable Homemade Wipes

If you like the disposable wipes you make, you can make reusable ones also. Just cut up old receiving blankets and t-shirts into 8×8 squares. fold them into old wipes containers and pour the same mixture (above) onto them or spray on each wipe with a spray bottle before using. These are an even cheaper option, and I am working on using these all the time.

This has been one of my most fun homemade discoveries. These wipes are definitely kid approved. Every time I change the baby, the older two hover around the wipes to smell them, and usually try to steal one, which they use to clean things. (Guess I’ve instilled this a little too well). We inadvertently discovered that these wipes also clean tile, counters, leather, and flooring well, but they leave residue on stainless steel.

I now make a lavender or tea tree version to use for all purpose disinfecting when we’re traveling and reusable make up removing wipes for me (stay tuned for that recipe).

Please try making your own wipes. It really takes very little time and is a great alternative to store bought wipes.

Willing to try it? Maybe you already make your own… please tell me about it below!

Well, I don’t have a recipe to share and I am sure my wipes don’t smell that yummy, but I use cloths diapers and wipes and so I just use water on my wipes (cheap baby washcloths) in an old wipes container. I should try this recipe though because I do miss the smell of disposable wipes! Thanks for sharing!

Katie, could you please give a break down on what ingredients do. I just found this recipe but it’s much different all the other recipes online that I’ve found. How did you come these ingredients and how long does the roll last without going moldy? I know this post is a little old but I hope you can answer my questions. Thanks :)

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

We go through wipes pretty fast, but I’ve had them in the diaper bag
for several months without them going moldy. The ingredient breakdown
    is:
Aloe vera is naturally moisturizing and also naturally antibacterial
    and anti-odor.
Witch Hazel is antibacterial and soothing, and it preserves the wipes
longer (in place of alcohol in conventional wipes)
Liquid Castille Soap- is the actual cleaning part- its a natural soap
that cleans without drying or irritating and has no chemicals
Grapefruit Seed Extract- helps preserve the wipes longer and prevents
    yeast growth on skin
Oil- helps moisturize baby’s skin and increases scent of the
    essential oils
Essential oils- mainly for smell, though lavender, lemon and orange
all have anitbacterial and antiviral properties that make them good
    for cleaning.

I decided on these ingredients after a lot of trial and error, and
I’ve been using this particular formula for almost a year now and
have had no problems with it. I’ve also noticed that in a pinch, you
don’t need the oil and grapefruit seed extract, they just help it
    last longer.
    Hope that helps!

  • Clare

Great! This helps me immensely :)

Katie, this recipe is AWESOME!!! I’ve got a 1 month old with a terribly sensitive bottom. There isn’t a type of store bought wipe that doesn’t make him have raw skin. After searching the internet I came upon a few recipes. All but yours included baby soap, and I just didn’t like that, so I decided to give your’s a try. They not only smell wonderful but thus far have caused ZERO issues with his bottom and work way better than just ater and papertowels alone. THANKS!!!!

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

So glad its working well for you! Thanks for the comment!

  • Maxine

Thanks very much for your time and effort and for sharing this…Every time I wipe my grandson’s face with a commercial baby wipe, I’m uncomfortably aware of their ingredients, few of which even sound safe. I just made some using your recipe. Again, thanks.

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

you are very welcome! I use them on my face too, especially to remove
    make up!

  • Casey

Is the recipe for 1 half of the paper towel roll or both halfs of the cut roll? Thanks!

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

    For 1/2 of the roll.

  • Monica

I am excited to try making my own wipes! Do you have recommendations on where to purchase the ingredients in bulk?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

I’ve order witch hazel and aloe from Mountain Rose Herbs and order
    Dr. Bronner’s online also.

  • http://ashstray.com Ashley

Very cool! I really want to try to make these. :)

  • Lisadcarney

I made this recipe but the oil sets on the top and when I made my cloth wipes the soap made them feel exceptionally sticky.  I am wondering if I did something wrong.  I am also concerned with washing them with my FuzziBunz diapers because of all the soap on the wipes.

  • Hotnoodles99

I made these the other day and I just love love love them!  Althought not a baby anymore, after-toilet wipes are still necessary for younger children, and my daughter thinks these are great!  I have used them to clean my face as well and it leave you feeling so refreshed!  I bought all the ingredients at Whole Foods.  Be prepared to spend a bit, but this will make many many wipes!  Thank you so much for the recipe!

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

You can actually leave out the oil with cloth wipes. I’ve used this without the oil on cloth wipes and never had a problem (though I have mostly bum Genius) but you can reduce the soap and up the witch hazel a little. Most of it will evaporate off before it is washed.

  • shawnynicole

After my wipes warmer stopped working, I started just wetting my reusable wipes with warm water from the sink. I keep a small bottle of coconut oil next to the cloth diaper/cloth wipes stash. After I wet the wipes I pour a few drops of coconut oil on them. It works wonders! I helps remove the poo, soothes and moisturizes irritated skin, and I think it’s the antibacterial properties that seem to even prevent diaper rash! Water and coconut oil…who knew? HAHA! For those who are worried, I don’t have any build up issues on my diapers…never have stripped them and I am very careful not to do anything that will cause me to need to.

  • Emily

Thank you for this “recipe”!  Trying it out!

  • http://denisejanell.blogspot.com/ denise

I just found this. my friend actually just uses a spray bottle with water and cut up a bath towel to reuse the wipes. do you suppose that cleans just as well? just water?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

Water works well too… and for cloth diapering, a lot of people prefer it. I just like this version because it smells good, and the aloe helps prevent diaper rash.

The witch hazel – is that the same witch hazel you can get at the drugstore? Or is it some special kind?

Hi! I love this recipe! Few questions: does it matter if i use extra virgin olive oil? Is jojoba oil safe to use on baby instead? do I use aloe Vera gel or juice?

Also, if I want to make all purpose disinfecting wipes do I use the same exact ingredients but use tea tree oil? Do I still use olive oil or can I omit that?
    Thanks!

I made a similar recipe for wipes, but it just called for coconut oil and water.  I loved them for the week that I got to use them and then they started to smell a little rancid.  It sounds like adding in the aloe vera (do you use gel or juice?) and witch hazel will solve those problems and I know that those are both ingredients that are good for acne/skin issues.  Not sure if I will add in other ingredients or go more purest this first go-round.  Thanks for sharing and please do let me know about the aloe vera!

You could completely get rid of the essential oils all together since they are mostly there for smell anyway. One of our dogs had an allergy, and we found that coconut oil was really soothing to the skin too. That might be tough since yours would be walking around with oily paws, but you could try putting a tiny bit of coconut oil on his paws after you wash them off. It would actually be healthy for him if he licked it… What kind of food is he eating? Some people have success in reversing allergies in dogs by changing them to a raw meat diet..

When I had my first child, 10 years ago, a friend of mine sent me a similar home baby wipes kit, but it just had some lovely gentle soap (it was cake soap, so she had grated it for easier dissolving) and almond oil.  And I think you add hot water to dissolve soap.  That simple recipe worked just great.  Cutting the Bounty paper towels was the hardest part.  And now (with new baby on the way) I have to find that special tupperware container that’s the right size.  Last I looked, the store had every size BUT that one.  May look on line for that if necessary.

  • Amy Bickmore

As a worse case senerio….you can make your wipes in a large zip lock bag.  I made a different version of wipes and send them to daycare in just a ziplock bag.  That way they don’t take up as much room and the water is all absorbed, so it doesn’t leak

  • Linda

Hey, great idea for the homemade baby wipes.  My babies have longed since grown-up but we use the personal wipes.  We will soon be switching!  I do, however, have an idea for anyone using  the homemade cloth version……..Have a ladies lingerie net handy to wash the clothes in.

  • Stephanie

I’m late to the party, but just wondering –  you say 2 vitamin e capsules – we have vitamin e OIL – would you just use 10 drops as you would grapefruit extract?  Thanks!

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

Yep, just about ten drops should work great.

After looking into it, I will not use Tea Tree Oil on my dog again.
Also just a bit of info, there was a report that says Lavender Oil can cause gynecomastia which is breast enlargement in boys that are pre-puberty. Google it under the New England Journal of Medicine.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I just returned from the doctor’s office. My poor baby girl (20 mths) is allergic to diapers and/or wipes so horrifically that we were encouraged to potty train and only use homemade wipes. Looking at recipes out there yours is the only one that does not advocate for a Johnson and Johnson formula plus you explained in the comment thread what each ingredient does. I am going to try without the extracts and see where we can go from there. THANK YOU again my heart breaks that my baby has to be in so much pain!

  • multibrandsintl

Recently I came across Tushies baby wipes, they
are fantastic and so easy to use and simple to get out of the packet. Tushies,
are feel are great value for money and brilliant for keeping in your bag when
out and about as it saves space in your bag having everything together.

  • Elizabeth

My questions is about using paper towels.  Aren’t there harmful chemicals in paper towels?  Are there ones you suggest over others?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

I use Bounty for the strength. There are some chemicals, mainly used during the manufacturing process, but nowhere near as many as there are in regular wipes. Seventh Generation makes an unbleached paper towel, so that would be an option, or you could just use the mix (no oil) on cloth wipes…

I cut up some microfleece which doesn’t fray and soak them in a homemade solution in one of those wipes tubs that Pampers do. I  just use either – a squirt of baby wash in warm water and a drop of lavender essential oil, or simply a rooibos or chamomile tea solution…easy peasy. And very cloth nappy friendly :)

  • ChOna oDonnell

Can I use coconut oil instead I’d olive oil? I’m reading the book The Coconut oil Miracle, it seems like a good option.

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

Coconut Oil is a great option, but unfortunately, unless you are using a wipe warmer, it is solid at room temp (most, at least) and won’t work well in this recipe. If you have one of the refined liquid versions it will absolutely work

  • Wendybsanchez

I have been doing research on homemade wipes and I like the solution you have here. My main question is about the paper towels. Most paper towels have formaldahyde in them which sort of defeats the “natural” part of the homemade baby wipes. Have you ever tried one of the formaldahyde free paper towels and if so, did it work as well as the bounty? Thanks.

  • Chona_Odonnell

Is it safe to use essential oils on babies? I have rose essential oil that says do not use on children. Why is that? What will happen of I use rose oil in place of lavender oil?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

Most of the warnings are in place because kids have more sensitive skin and essential oils are highly concentrated. I’ve used rose before without a problem, but you’d have to try on your kids…

I make cloth wipes.  My formula is to fill a quart jar 3/4 of the way with hot water.  Add a tablespoon (I don’t measure, so it’s close) of Dr. Bronners hemp no scent baby liquid soap, 2 tablespoons of almond oil, 4 drops tea tree oil, and 5 drops lavender oil.  It works really well.

  • Cindy C.

In your “Why We Cloth Diaper” article, you say to omit the olive/almond oil for your homeade baby wipes recipe but don’t mention that anywhere here. Is this ingredient not okay for cloth diapers?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

It is actually ok, but not needed and a little easier to wash without it. That small amount is actually fine…

When my babies were little, I had cut up a large terricloth towel into 3×6″ pieces and zig-zag stitched all around the edges to prevent fraying.  Then I folded them in half and put them in an old baby wipe container.  Then I  poured water that had been boiled (to prevent mold from growing) over the wipes and squeezed out most of the water.  The small container worth usually lasted about 3 days and I could put them in the conventional laundry with a little bleach. Cheap and super effective.

  • Jerucia

I make my own wipes as well, and I love them! They never give my little girl a rash, and they smell so good! I cut a huge roll into three, and then my recipe is as follows. 1cup HOT (as hot as you can get it) water, 1-2 drops organic lavender oil, 1/2-1 tsp organic coconut oil, 1/2- 1 tsp organic natural baby wash (i use my midwives brand) Mix together and pour over wipes. These last a long time, I’ve never had them go moldy.

  • Elizabeth

I can’t wait to try this recipe! My only suggestion would be to make sure you are using 100% witch hazel extract as most that are on the market contain a percentage of alcohol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1023826797 April Peacock

I use a spray from 1 TB olive oil, 1 TB castile soap, and fill up with water til it reaches 1 quart. I have this mixture in several small spray bottles all over the house and diaper bag. We use it to spray on butts, hands, rags, etc. I cut up several T-shirts and use them for wipes. I use them dry, since I spray the mix directly on the skin. I haven’t had any problems and it’s easy to carry- unless you try to go through the airport, then you need a really small bottle.

  • MommaK

I’ve been making my own wipes for my 4mo old baby girl for the last month by just using water (which I boiled first), coconut oil and castile soap :) It works great! She hasn’t had a single diaper rash and it cleans sticky diaper messes up like magic! No smell, but works great :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/nicholsmom Christine Nichols

I like the cut up receiving blankets option. I’ve tried paper towel homemade wipes and they’d like to tear the skin off that tender bottom D= I never get how anyone can use those, but people use Huggies wipes and they’re just as rough, so maybe most baby bottoms are tougher than mine were.

  • Caroviss

I made similar body cleansing wipes for the family for camping.  I repurposed a large plastic container that had contained protein shake mix to hold the wipes. I mixed water with alcohol free Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera in approximately equal proportions. I used a few drops of lavender and Tea tree oil. The amount of essential oils I used depended upon the size of the batch I was making. For @ 100 wipes or so, I used 20 drops of lavender and 15 of tea tree. They were a huge hit. Kept everyone fresh, and was very soothing for abrasions and bug bites as well.

I would love to try this soon, but after looking at the initial cost for buying all the ingredients, I’m a little taken aback.  I was wondering, since you said you buy the ingredients bulk, how many rolls of paper towels they last for.  I’m sure knowing this will help me get over spending so much money up front because I know that buying a 1 or 5-gallon jug of witch hazel, when the recipe only calls for 1 Tbs, should last quite a while, but I’d like to have a better idea of how long that might be exactly…  Thanks for sharing. =0)

So my due date is tomorrow,  although I’m feeling it will be about another week.  Is it ok to go ahead and make these to have them ready ahead of time? Will these go bad if I make them too early? Also, if I use spring water (actual spring water that I go get from the spring once a week) do I need to boil it? I know thats kind  vague since all spring water is different, but its the water I drink and make kombucha with and is very clean.

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

A week is probably fine, but they are really fast to make when you need them too. I always put them on my labor list, since I need things to keep me busy in early labor anyway. Prayers for an easy and wonderful delivery!

I use an altered version of the baby wipes recipe. It was slightly more oily than I liked so I tweeked it a little bit.
1 3/4 cups distilled or boiled water
    1 tbsp aloe Vera gel
    1 tbsp witch hazel
    1 tsp liquid Castile
    1 tsp grape seed oil
    Several drops essential oils

I love these wipes!! Best recipe I have found.

  • Jdiamondmcg

Just a thought… Does it bother anyone that a lot of paper towels are bleached or have dyes on them? I wound up using Marcal Small Steps paper towels and although thinner than a Bounty, are working really well. Their website states, “Our 100% premium recycled eco-friendly products are hypoallergenic, virtually lint free, and whitened without chlorine bleaching.” But it doesn’t say how they “whiten” them. I’m just curious about what others think, or are using.

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

  • http://www.facebook.com/abbie.heller.5 Abbie Heller

If you want to make ahead, just prep the towels and mix up a jar of solution, ready to go. I always used flannel wipes, but found the best way to never “run out” was to keep a jar of pre-mixed solution ready to dump on the wipes….best way to go when waiting for baby to arrive. When I get in “labor land” I can’t do math, so counting and measuring (or even remembering which ingredients were left) wasn’t going to happen. :)

  • Amberlaray18

    Great thank you!

I just made this recipe, but instead of just using water, I steeped a bag of chamomile tea in the water. It made them smell amazing! I omitted the lavender because I’m having a boy and worried about the effects on his hormones… Have you heard this? Supposedly it can cause some funky issues… Just in case, I’m keeping it away from my boy, regardless of how much I LOVE lavender & tea tree essential oils! What’s your take on that issue, Katie?
On a side note, I used one of these on my face to remove makeup (as I have used baby wipes in the past) and it left my skin velvety smooth and clean! I may steal these from my baby before he comes! ;)

I steer clear with boys too. I haven’t seen anything that shows any conclusive link, but I figure don’t risk it. That’s a great idea on the chamomile!

  • Ashlee

We have a container from target that has a closeable steam vent… perfect for pulling the “wipes” through. I don’t know the brand but it’s clear with purple trim and has the snap tabs for the lid. We also just use about a cup or so hot water, a few squirts of Dr. Bronner’s (baby) and a few squirts of olive oil. With the Viva big roll, it’s been really great for us with both our girls, and super easy.

I contacted them to ask about ingredients to avoid in homemade wipes and they said no petroleum (like baby oils – natural oils, like olive oil are A-OK) no vinegar, and no soap. I didn’t specifically ask about castile soap, though. Do you think the Castile soap is ok or I should skip it?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

I’ve used it with them without a problem, but you can skip it if you’d prefer. In fact, just water and witch hazel and aloe make a great cloth wipe solution.

  • CarolinaBol

If I’m using reusable wipes, what do your recommend I wash them with? Do you have a homemade laundry soap? How do u strip cloth wipes? Do u need to? Thanks!

Instead of using paper towels, we use swaddling blankets that I have cut up (about 9-12 wipes out of a old swaddle blanket) and have sewn around the edges to avoid fraying. The wipes go in the wash with our cloth diapers and they’re super soft!

  • Breanne

i found a small container of witch hazel at our Rite Aid drugstore.

  • Amy C.

I’ve been using this mix with a wipe warmer (and cloth wipes) and the smell is pretty bad. One thing that is different is that I’m using the castille soap from Mountain Rose Herbs. I thought the smell was from the witch hazel but now I think it’s the soap causing it. It doesn’t smell too terrible when cool or room temp but after getting warmed…the smell is gross and the baby then smells like it. Also note I am not using any essential oils right now but i’m going to try some to see if it will help any. Aside from the bad smell the mixture is great on baby’s skin and we have had no rashes (baby has sensitive skin).

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

Hmmm… I haven’t tried heating it, but maybe the essential oils will help. You could also try a pre-scented castille soap and that might help (Dr. Bronners makes scented ones)

  • Ray

Would Thayer’s Witch Hazel work, its ingredient also includes aloe vera and grape seed extract.

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

    That should work…

  • Amanda Jurosco

What is the benefit of using grapefruit seed extract? I see you have it as optional. I’m new to all this! I want to try making some homemade wipes!

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

It is a preservative and antibacterial. Not really needed, just helps extend the life if you aren’t using them within a week or two

I love using homemade wipes, but I have also found an amazing natural wipes brand called Water Wipes. They are over 99% water with some fruit extract and that’s it!!! I buy them in bulk on Amazon and love them so much. No chemicals or crud and my baby’s sensitive skin doesn’t react. I use them along with homemade wipes just depending on where we are. Just thought I’d pass it on to other mamas since it took me so long to find something without chemicals.

We are using Charlie banana reusable diapers. Do you think using this mixture with reusable wipes would damage them if washed together?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

I’ve washed wipes with the mix with my cloth diapers and haven’t had a problem….

I found some Aloe Vera Gel at our local health food store and ingredients include Carrageenan (thickening agent) Citric Acid (ph stabilizer) and Potassium Sorbate (mold inhibitor) wondering if these ingredients are safe for my little guys buns. It also sayos n the front of the bottle “Inner Fillet” Thank you

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

    It should be fine…

  • http://www.facebook.com/ryanandjessicasikorski Jessica Sikorski

I have another question. The grapefruit seed extract that I found has 67% vegetable glycerine and 33% grapefruit seed extract for the ingredient list. Is this the right thing to get for the wipes.

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

    Yep..

  • LysiJoy

I don’t have babies of my own yet but I have little nieces and nephews that I love very much & I try to help my busy mom friends as much as I can by making stuff like this. You can imagine how much they appreciate it! And it brings me so much joy to do it, so it’s a win win! :-)
With these wipes, you’re not rinsing your baby’s skin off after using, right? So the small amount of soap that’s left on their skin is not irritating or anything? It’s probably a silly question but I wasn’t sure so I wanted to ask. Thanks!

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

Yep… it is fine. You are such a wonderful aunt and as a mom I ca say that aunts like you are a huge blessing!

  • Emily Brechbill

What other EO would you suggest? I want to stay away from Lavender and Tea Tree.

  • LysiJoy

Aw thanks! It’s definitely one of the best jobs in the world! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy life to post all of these wonderful tips and recipes. Such a gift!

Hi, I just tried this recipe (word for word), and I don’t know if I did something wrong, but the wipes came out REALLY soapy. REALLY. I have to wash the residue off with water. I don’t know if I’d be comfortable using this and having all these suds left on my baby’s bottom… Any advice or suggestions on how to avoid this?

Where do you get the giant jugs of the ingredients?
Also, do you use Young Living Oils? They are the only theraputic grade oils and are the only ones that won’t just smell good, they will be good for your child’s health and well being (and yours as well!) If you would like to learn more or how to sign up, just send reply and let me know.

Jdiamondmcg, bother me indeed. lets see the big picture here its not just about us and our babies but the total enviromental degradation and destruction of the northern Boreal forests in Canada for what??? Super soft TP to wipe our asses!

    Use recycled paper towels please!

I love this recipe! I’ve been using it and making our own wipes for my son for a few months now with great results. In fact, we unexpectedly ran out and had to use a baby shower box of commercial brand wipes that day and my son got a rash on his bottom. Natural is certainly better! Thanks so much!

I tried to find the answer already in the comments but it seems it was only asked once and never answered. Can aloe Vera juice be used? I also have aloe Vera plants but not sure how to use them for this, I don’t want my daughter to get sticky

  • mamajojo

Is this recipe cloth diaper safe? The castile soap wouldnt cause any buildup right?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

I’m not sure… haven’t tried it myself. I would think that it could, but let me know if you try it!

  • Angela Tschida

I know most of these comments are quite old, but I found that the plastic 1 lb Folgers coffee containers fit a half roll of paper towels PERFECTLY! Just thought I’d share in the hopes someone else doesn’t pull their hair out trying to find a rubbermaid container! Thanks for the wonderful recipe and amazing website… my daughter is terribly sensitive to ANY store bought wipes, and I’ve never had a problem with these.

  • MathGirlTM

I use unbleached organic flannel squares. No excess waste and super soft!

  • TillyMonster

Hi there mama! Thank you for this post! I love that I can make natural(ish) wipes that are disposable. It’s a necessary evil for someone like me with coin-op laundry in an apartment.

I wanted to mention– I am using Up and Up paper towels from Target. I’m sure Bounty is better, but it *is* possible to use generic. My daughter is fully potty learned, so we are mainly using them after she uses the potty. When our new baby comes (due Sept.) I’m not sure how these will stand up to that kind of beating! But I wanted to mention!

    I love this blog!

  • nikki

I was just wondering if there is something I could use in place of the grapefruit seed oil that has antifungal properties. My sister can’t eat grapefruit for health reasons, I’m not sure if it would affect her if it absorbed through the skin, but I don’t want to find out if she babysits!

This sounds like an awesome recipe for wipes!! I can’t wait to try it. The only thing I would warn about is that lavender oil (although awesome for its many medicinal qualities) is not recommended for use on boys under the age of puberty because of its hormonal side effects. So for mamas of boys I would recommend using a different essential oil or just going without. Its not worth the risk. Here is a link on WebMD that explains the side effects .

  • Laura Jessup

I’m pretty simple and this seems like a lot of work!!! I prefer the simple tea tree oil, carrier oil of choice (coconut, olive, almond, sunflower, vit e or grapeseed) and water. And I use cloth wipes as disposible is such a waste :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/ryanandjessicasikorski Jessica Sikorski

i have heard that you can add white vinegar and tea tree oil to your wipes recipe for yeast. Wondering if you would recommend that or not. Thank you

I made these in a time of need – my daughter had the most awful diaper rash that nothing was touching. After ditching store bought wipes in favor of these, the rash completely healed within days! However, I noticed that within 3 days the wipes smelled funky and within 5 days at the most they were growing mold. What am I doing wrong? I used a blend of witchhazel that has rose water in it, pure aloe, and almond oil. The witchhazel listed grapefruit seed extract as an ingredient and I didn’t add any extra. I stored them in an old wipes container. Would adding more GSE help?

  • http://wellnessmama.com Wellness Mama

It might, but this could also be a temperature issue in the warmer months…

Katie, I just want to thank you for your site.Your recipes have truly helped me feel more in control of the health and well being of my family. These wipes smell divine even without the addition of essential oils (I use the almond Dr Bronners). I used to stress all the time about what goes in and on our bodies because so many “natural products aren’t natural at all. And because most of the body care products that really are natural are so expensive. These easy, inexpensive recipes are really empowering. You are helping people live non toxic lives.

It’s not a lot of work at all! I whip up a triple batch every week or so. I put the kettle on while I’m fixing dinner and by the time dinner dishes are washed, the water has cooled. I purchased several dozen organic wipes and wash them with the diapers. No waste and super easy!

  • MathGirlTM

    I use orange!

OMG I’m so exited! I just made this. I made a tea with camomile and plantain and used that instead of plain water and added some rose essential oil. They smell yummy and fell very nice on the skin.

I’m not making a joke here; wipes are great for adults and elderly too? Nothing wrong with being clean? Also, we use them on our sailboat for “showers” when out for several days; it saves water!

I’m sure the drugstore version is the best?

  • Peter Clausen

A used plastic coffee container like what Folgers comes in works great too!

Great post. I have recently started “going crunchy” and am loving all the info from your site and Crunchy Betty. You are both amazing. A question I have is do you need to “rinse” after using these? Does the soap make things sticky at all? I know after using chemical ones I shouldn’t be concerned lol, but was just wondering. I’ll be using them for cloth wipes for use with my new Mama Cloth (another awesome thing I can’t wait to try). Thanks for any info.
