After a recent Facebook post where I mentioned I put some strange ingredients in my coffee, I’ve gotten a few emails asking for more details …

I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. Basically, I love coffee but my adrenals don’t always love it! Also, since I don’t eat/drink sugar or much pasteurized dairy, it can make for some pretty boring coffee … until now.

Drink the Fat…

Bonus points to anyone who just thought of Ross!

I’d always mixed coconut oil into my coffee or tea to help make sure I consume enough healthy fats, though it always floated on the top and the texture was sometimes rough (especially when I was pregnant … the texture made me so nauseous!). At the suggestion of a friend, I tried a strange twist that has become my new favorite!

Basically, I blend coconut oil and grass-fed organic unsalted butter (yes … butter) into coffee with a dash of vanilla and sometimes a drop of stevia. The blender emulsifies the coconut oil and butter so the texture is more creamy than oily and it is a delicious way to get a boost of beneficial fats. This type of healthy coffee also gives much more extended energy throughout the day without making me jittery.

This is similar to the Bulletproof® coffee recipe recommended and popularized by Dave Asprey, though Dave uses MCT oil in place of the coconut oil. Both have their benefits, but coconut oil has more immune-boosting properties while concentrated MCT oil does more for an immediate energy and brain boost.

I also tried his Bulletproof Coffee which is much smoother than regular coffee and which he claims is produced carefully to avoid the presence of mycotoxins: “Most coffee beans are processed by either leaving them in the sun and elements to wither and dry, or by pressing them and letting them ferment (spoil) to remove the outer layer of the bean. Both of these techniques are known to produce significant levels of mycotoxins as they enhance flavor. Upgraded coffee beans are mechanically processed right after picking using only clean cold water. This more expensive process is safer because it dramatically reduces harmful molds or bacteria from impacting your health.”

I’ve also used various other forms of organic coffee with great results.

Additional Notes: I take my fermented cod liver oil right before drinking this to give all the fat soluble vitamins some beneficial fats to digest with. If you aren’t regularly taking coconut oil, start with a teaspoon and work up, as too much at once might upset your stomach. Coconut oil often increases metabolism and some people notice feeling warmer or like their heart is racing if they start off too fast.

I’ve also recently started adding collagen powder for extra protein and for hair, skin, and nail support and it works wonderfully!

Do you drink coffee? Put butter in it? Too weird? Weigh in below!

This delicious and easy healthy coffee packs a lot of nutrients and gives you lasting, healthy energy all day long.

I add demarara sugar for taste, cinnamon for blood sugar level (fasting levels drinking this was 72!! used to be 90-110 w white sugar), a teaspoon of whiskey for blood pressure (dilation of vessels, not to mention warm feeling on cold morning or sore throat) ), and…when stressed— a squeeze of hersheys syrup!!

    Thank you so much !
Tried this am and it was delicious.
2 things—you mentioned your adrenals, I am dealing with that issue as well. How much coffee do you drink a day to protect adrenals? Also, you use collagen in the coffee? I have some powder and would like to try adding.
Thanks so much for your reply!

I normally love your blog, but the fact that you quote Asprey on his coffee process without researching further to discover that it is in fact, bunk, and is simply a marketing gimmick, troubles me 🙁

I would love to drink this, but I already have very high cholesterol. All that fat will elevate it even more.

Hi, I was just reading your post, Healthy Coffee Recipe (with Butter!). I’m lactose intolerant. I’m wondering if you have another coffee or tea recipe that will help towards consuming coconut oil. You also mentioned that it was possible to consume too much coconut oil until you get used to it. Do you have guidance on how to get started?

    Thank you

You can just leave out the coconut oil or use ghee 🙂 And I recommend starting with 1/2 Tbsp of coconut oil and see how you feel. Then work your way up a 1/2 Tbsp at a time.

I have a question that I have been hunting the answer to–maybe you can help me. I am really allergic to coconut, and i am looking for a good substitute. Are there any palatable suggestions you may have?

I like the butter coffee, but would prefer using ghee. However, when I do, it is oily and doesn’t foam up like when I use butter. Is that a common result?

I LOVE ? my BP Coffee! I put 2 Tbs. of Choczero chocolate syrup, 1Tbs. Ghee, 1 scoop of bone collagen protein by Peak Performance and 3 Tbs Kiss My Keto MCT powder. ( There’s far less gastrointestinal upset with MCT powder than there is with the oil, and all these items can be purchased at Amazon) Then I blend it all up in my Nutribullet. Yummers! So far I’ve lost over 100 lbs and if I cheat, this coffee prevents me from gaining too much weight.

Great site full of interesting information. But I’m confused…as a die-hard black coffee drinker, and self proclaimed coffee snob – why am I adding butter and oil to my coffee? Couldn’t I just use coconut oil to make my omlette and the butter on my toast? And this seems very time consuming for busy mornings. And how could the coffee still be hot by the time all this happens to it? Not skeptical – just curious.

Can you use coconut cream instead of coconut oil & butter? Does it have the same effect as coconut oil & grassfed butter?

Hey Katie! I would love to know how much is too Much when it comes to drinking this coffee. I’m not as concerned with the caffeine because right now I’m using Chickory and dandelion instead of caffeine as I am on AIP but I’m wondering how much is too much of the oils and fats because I would love to suck this down twice a day not just once but I don’t want to overdo it. I currently put in a large tea spoonful of coconut oil and a teaspoon of MCT oil into one brew. Thank you!

    Excellent recipe!
The first time I made this I didn’t use my blender, too early I guess. I added the ingredients to the coffee and just stirred it, it was a bit oily but after a few minutes the coffee seemed to absorb the oil, it didn’t stay oily for long.
This morning I decided to pull out the blender and WOW! what a difference! I didn’t have any stevia so I added a splash of organic maple syrup instead, along with organic whipping cream and it tasted great.

How much collagen are you adding to the coffee and does it change the taste at all?

I really want to try the bulletproof coffee, but my cholesterol has always been high. When I had increased dairy through raw milk, cream and butter, I went up 100 points to 350. My doctor freaked out. When I remove the dairy , it comes back down to 250. Still high, but my ratios are good and My triglycerides are low. I refuse to be on statins. What does all this fat and ketogenic diets do to cholesterol levels? No one ever mentions that.
