This week something happened that doesn’t happen often. I got mad. Not to say I don’t have bad days, but I rarely get in a pissed-off, mad-at-the-world mood. But this week I did.

Don’t get me wrong- I have days where I wish I kept my cool with my kids, or wish I stayed calm or got more done, but I don’t get truly angry very often.

I also typically try to keep my emotions in check, but today they were most definitely not and my poor husband had to bear the blunt end of my rant/venting session.

What made me mad?

The Dark Side of Blogging

Not my blog specifically (I love you guys, my readers, and I love to write) but the idea of blogging, the profession of blogging and all the things that happen behind the scenes that readers never see or hear about. The things that bloggers get sucked into and are forced to deal & compete with.

To preface, I should explain that the part that made me most angry is the perceived “selling out” of bloggers in various ways. This made me upset because I pride myself in writing ALL my own content, doing all my own research, making sure each article is super high quality and everything I ever link to, suggest or promote are products I personally use and love.

It makes me mad when I see other bloggers not extending their readers the same courtesy.

Here’s the thing…

From the outside, health bloggers often appear to be perfect human beings who cook gourmet meals three times a day, have impeccable style, washboard abs, and an incredible personality. We aren’t (at least not all of those things all the time).

Think about the pictures posted on facebook or instragram. You put your best foot forward. So do bloggers, but many of us are even more “filtered” since we are potentially exposed to and judged by thousands of people each day.

I sincerely hope that no mom ever comes to my blog and feels like she isn’t good enough because it seems like I “do it all” or “am a great mom all the time.” I assure you I’m not. I have laundry baskets full of clothes in my bedroom right now and yesterday’s clothes are still on the floor. We’ve eaten organic hotdogs three times this week because the Wellness Mama Cookbook (and dealing with Amazon) has taken over my life.

I don’t always cook three meals a day. Occasionally, I order Pete’s Paleo or from a local Japanese restaurant out of sheer convenience.

I don’t always make my own detergent and cleaning supplies. Sometimes it’s just easier (and saves time) to buy (natural) products at the store or online.

Sometimes I cry because of comments I receive on my blog or facebook (sometimes happy tears, but usually tears of sadness, hurt, or pain). I’m very much not a perfect mom. Nor a perfect human.

I blog to share things that have made my life easier or better and to hopefully help other moms, but I hope that everything I write encourages and uplifts and never makes another woman feel like she isn’t doing enough or isn’t good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way- trust me…. you are good enough. You are doing enough. You are a great mom, and one lesson I’ve learned the hard way lately is that your children, your family, need you. Imperfect, wonderful, you.

Back to Blogging Though…

Certain things I’ve seen in the blogging world lately have really upset me because I felt like they crossed that line with their readers. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with bloggers making money. But I do have a problem with:

  • I have a problem with bloggers making money in a non-genuine way at the expense of their readers.
  • I have a problem with incestuous back-room affiliate deals. I have a problem with “I’ll promote your product if you promote mine.”
  • I have a problem when people duplicate my blog exactly for themselves, the design, every post and picture on the site, strip out my affiliate links and add their own, then claim everything as theirs.
  • I have a problem when other sites pull every post and picture of mine to use for themselves… to get more traffic so they can charge more for ads.
  • I have a problem with people copying content (both my content and that of others), stealing ideas and writing in an unauthentic voice solely for the goal of pushing more content out to the search engines. This annoys me because it isn’t about Google. It is about you. The readers. I don’t write for Google, I write for you!
  • I have a problem with the 100+ emails I get a day from people asking me to promote their stuff to my “list” (the people who subscribe to my email newsletter)

I don’t have a “list.” I have readers. I have friends. I have you. And you are the most important part of blogging to me.

And you know what? I’m not the only one who feels this way about the dark side of blogging.

I’m extremely aware, appreciative and grateful every single day for the amazing community that has grown through Wellness Mama. It is so much bigger than me. It is a group. A sisterhood. A family of moms who quite literally have the power to change the world. I don’t take that lightly. It annoys me when I see bloggers in the industry who do.

For me, blogging is really about creating a change for our kids. It isn’t about the money (though if that happens, it is great since we have six kids to feed, clothe and put through college one day) but that isn’t the goal. It is about making a healthier future for my children so they have decades and decades of health after college and so I get to live long enough to meet and enjoy my grandchildren.

I like to think/hope that I don’t have the amazing community that has developed here because I’ve written good articles about certain topics, but because I care about you. Because I want an actual (online) relationship with you. Because I care about the future for your kids as much as for my own.

I don’t want to be a “celebrity” from blogging (as some bloggers seem to want). In fact, this would utterly terrify me and get me so far out of my comfort zone I wouldn’t know who I was anymore. My goal isn’t to make millions, it is to HELP millions.

Someone else could copy my writing, copy my posts, copy all my ideas, but it wouldn’t be the same because the passion isn’t there. Because the world doesn’t need another blog post about how to make lip balm or magnesium body butter (which I did invent, btw), but the world needs more passion. It needs more people who care. If that is you- I am forever grateful for you… really! If you are passionate about your own goals, your own life, your own family and their health… you are changing the world more than the bloggers you see making tons of money and looking perfect on Instagram.

Because here is the deal… at the end of the day, it isn’t about me (and I’m super glad it isn’t!). I don’t use my last name. Not because I’m ashamed of it or have something to hide, but because it isn’t important (and because I value privacy for those six small children I mentioned). And because the movement, the “wellness mama idea”, is so much bigger than me.

I’m here because I want to make a change, not become famous.

My Blogging Struggle

It takes an incredible amount of time to make Wellness Mama what it is. Researching for posts. Taking photographs. Writing. Editing. Moderating comments. Social media promotion & communication. Etc.

It costs a lot of money to keep it running. Design & development costs. Hosting. Upgraded servers when traffic grows. Premium plugins. Email service. Etc. Etc. Etc.

The list goes on.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I could implement ads with the click of a button and make much more money that would help support my family and help fund a charity I’ve wanted to start for a long time (to provide sustainable food and clean water worldwide and to help distribute leftover food from farmers markets to soup kitchens, schools and food banks), but I’ve never made the jump because I personally hate ads and feel this would be “selling out.”

I want to make sure I’m always focused on you, but sometimes I don’t know the best way to do this. I make sure I don’t use spammy tactics to try to sell you things you don’t need. I don’t white label products that I didn’t create to make money. I moderate every comment so that the community is an uplifting and healthy environment for you to learn. I prominently display my affiliate policy so that readers are aware of my quality standards, practices, and promotion requirements.

I’ve struggled with the fact that I’m very much imperfect. WellnessMama.com has grown beyond my greatest goals and expectations. The blog gets a lot of traffic and in turn makes money through some of the products and resources I recommend.

I still feel like a failure because I’m not the perfect mom or the perfect wife. I think we all do. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think any mom goes to bed feeling like she has the whole wife/mother thing under control. I know I don’t. In fact, every day, I stress because of this incredible community that I love so much. Because I don’t always look, act and behave the way a “perfect” mom should. I think we all do.

So- long story short. Thank YOU so much for reading. For putting up with my rant. For caring about your family and the future of our children and our world.

At the end of the day, I don’t give a damn about just having your email address on my list. I want you to actually adopt the healthy changes I write and email about. To put in the time. To make a lasting change for your family. To say that your family’s life has improved because of changes you made. That is what matters to me.

2014 has been a tough year in many ways. The blog has grown. A lot. But I’ve made mistakes. I promoted a course (against my intuition) for someone that wasn’t a good fit… because I was too competitive. I started promoting an essential oils company (against my better judgement) because I thought there was an opportunity to help some friends make money. I self published the original Wellness Mama Cookbook, even though I had numerous offers from traditional publishers for upfront advances. And it’s wreaked havoc on my thyroid condition.

At the same time, 2014 has been an incredibly wonderful and rewarding year and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I’ve made awesome friends who started as online friends and are now real life friends, like Heather, Genevieve, Emily, and Kelly (go check them out- they are amazing!). People like Sean, Steve & Jordan, Mary, and Christa. I finally found an amazing doctor who has helped me find answers for my thyroid struggles. And I finally finished writing my book!

My Pledge to You and a Question

So here is my pledge to you: I’m going to stop trying to be the “perfect” mom on the blog and social media. I’m going to stop stressing about answering every comment and start deleting those that don’t meet my requirements. I’m going to spend more time with family, even if that means I don’t post quite as often. I’m going to only create the most valuable, most helpful things I can and share those. I’m going to stop deleting posts because I feel like they aren’t good enough or might be met with resistance. I’m going to stop censoring my writing to meet the “squeaky clean Wellness Mama image” and let the real me shine through.

Because at the end of the day, I rarely feel like I’m good enough.

I feel inferior because I don’t look like Jennifer Aniston with the patience of June Cleaver and the culinary skills of Julia Childs. I feel imperfect because I don’t have 28 hours a day to get everything done that I want to accomplish.

In the coming weeks:

  • I’m going to be moving away from most “JV promotions” because they just don’t seem genuine to me.
  • I’m going to start creating more ebooks, courses, and products. Things that I enjoy doing and things that I wish I’d had when I started out…
  • I’m going to focus on creating more helpful and useful content for you.
  • I’m going to focus on enjoying my family and having balance and enjoying things more and stressing less.

This crazy world of blogging has led me to wrestle with several internal struggles lately, and rather than try to face them on my own, I figured I’d ask for your advice (it has never failed me before, so no pressure!).

I Want Your Opinion

1. What do you consider “selling out?” If I were to allow advertisers (carefully selected of course) would your opinion of WellnessMama.com as a trusted resource change?

2. How much of the “real me” do you want to see? Do you want more of the raw, uncensored Katie, or prefer the squeaky clean, “Wellness Mama” image?

3. Do you want me to create more courses, ebooks, and products for you or just recommend others?

4. What type of content and information will be most helpful to you moving forward? How can I best provide simple answers for healthier families for you?

Your blog is perfect now. The trust I have in you from several years of following your blog tells me if you make the careful changes you are thinking of, your blog will be just perfect then, too. I can’t begin to tell you how helpful and inspiring Wellness Mama has become. Do whatever you need to do about your blog; k if change is hard, we’ll get over it, and if changes are not working for Wellness Mama, you can always fiddle with them until they do work.

    Katie,

I haven’t read every post you’ve created. I haven’t made a single recipe, or lotion bar. But your blog has changed my life. Just the tips I’ve read on here have made me a healthier, happier person in the past year. I’m so sorry that you’ve been made to feel like anything less than an outstanding leader and advisor. I don’t know much about you but I find you extremely relateable given that you make your articles so comprehensive yet simple and easy to understand. The fact that you link to products makes healthy living so much more accessible and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that. I follow a lot of other bloggers and I appreciate them too but I am considered a “lurker” and I have never felt moved to comment on anything except for today, right now, because of the nature of this post. Your other followers are very supportive and I’m sure you don’t NEED this comment but I certainly felt the need to tell you, from the bottom of my heart, that I appreciate what you do and I would be at a different place in my life if I hadn’t randomly stumbled upon WellnessMama.com. Bless you.

    All the best,
    Van

Yours has been one of my favorite blogs for several years now. I recommend it to friends all the time. Your content is relative, doable, and real.
    1) I absolutely think you should have ads for products that you believe in. And you absolutely deserve to be compensated for doing this. You work hard and need to have a return on your investment. That’s not selling out. I trust you to only put things out there that you believe in. I would love to see you be able to accomplish some of your dreams through proceeds from your blog.
    2) And I would love to see a little more raw, uncensored Katie. I like real. I think it makes us all feel better about ourselves when we can see that others are not perfect all the time either.
    3) As far as your last question, I like the way you have been doing things. It works for me. I like to be able to pin specific articles on my Pinterest boards so that I can refer back to them when I need to.
Also, I just got your cookbook in the mail and I am so excited! I was reading the first few pages last night and learned about your Hashimoto’s. I just finished a health coach course through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. One of my best friends has Hashimoto’s. I have been going through an Andrea Beaman course with her to help her learn how to heal her thyroid and am so excited about all that I am learning. My thyroid is a little sluggish as well. When I found out about your condition, I jumped on Amazon and bought your cookbook for her. You have a great thing going her. Keep it up!

Hi Katie, I have been trying many of your ideas for a year now! I don’t expect you to be an expert, but take your advise as a FRIEND who has tried, maybe failed, and then nearly perfected a recipe/process. I like that you are REAL and share what works for your family. I have taken it as an opportunity to learn new things that I reaseach about, adjust to my own needs and share with others. My conversations often start…”I was reading on wellness mama…” I like that you may tell us where you buy your products (advertise) because it gives me a place to get stared. You have a kind heart and do wonderful work, I wish you were a mom in my neighborhood!

I love your blog the way it is but if you feel that you need to change anything to make you feel better, then go right ahead! I think you should be rewarded for what you do so small advertising that wouldn’t bother me so much would be OK as long as they don’t pop up on the screen, as those ones are so annoying.
Keep up the great work x

    Katie-

I have been following you for almost 4 years. I initially found your site when I searched for a DIY baby wipes option. It happened to be during a 40 day grain free challenge and I was hooked 🙂 You have brought me inspiration and have offered kindness to me personally several times. I really appreciate it!! I have been a Physical Therapist for 10ish years, but due to a burning desire to expand my ability to treat the “whole” person, I am back in school – this time for DC degree so I can also pursue Functional Medicine as part of my practice. This is not exactly what I had planned at this stage, with 3 young children- oh and my own Hashimoto’s diagnosis. I do know this is where I need to be.
Thank you for encouraging all of us! I have sent SOOOOOOO many people to your site. I agree with you, that moms are the ones who will change the world. 🙂

Blessings Katie – and yes, if you’re comfortable please let more of the “real” you shine through.

    Hi Katie,
I feel compelled to reply to this post. Your site is one of my go to places when I’m trying to find information about something. The honesty that you put into each post as well as the links to validate what you are talking about makes it even more of a resource. I love that if I’m looking for a new recipe to switch up for dinner, a remedy for a cold or wanting a recipe for something like hand cream – its all in one place. The variety of information you have here is what makes it much more interesting to look up and well as makes me keep coming back for more because its started a thirst of knowledge from what else you have decided to post recently. I’m always left reading a post of yours with something to think about, which again makes me always want to come back.

So I wanted to answer your questions specifically:
    1. If you were to add advertisers to your site, it wouldn’t change my opinion of have me less drawn to your blog in anyway. In fact, I’m kinda curious of which advertisers you would pick to add to your site.

    2. I had to really think about this one. I’m curious of a lot of things. Like say; how you make your life easier as a mom, especially a mom of 5. Do you cook meals in advance for the week?
Are there sites you use for recipes when you wanna switch it up? Do you ever feel like you get in a cooking rut? Are there things you do daily, weekly, monthly that you feel makes it easier for yourself? [Could be you already posted something like this, if so I’m sorry for asking]
Did you ever tandem nurse your kids? Even just when pregnant? What helped you decide to wean? Do you have tips for this; for weaning, tandem nursing while pregnant or when NB arrives? Did you stop nursing as soon as you found out you were pregnant again, why? and what helped you transition from nursing with as little mommy guilt as possible as well as baby from nursing; did you still pump?
What are your struggles as a mom and how do you cope with them? Do you have certain resource sites you use when your feeling stuck? Book recommendations?
Do you have certain toy brands that you only buy? Do you use certain sites to test the toy or other products you use, like car seats, to make sure they are safe?
How did you start out gardening? Do you have book recommendations for starting out? When do you start planning for your garden? Are there any herbs or produce you preserve for out of season use? Do you always plant the same things?
What do you do with your kids to keep them busy when you need to do stuff or even when you are playing with them? Do you do crafts? Is there a favorite that you do yearly; seasonally; as a gift like for your husband? Do you make your own gifts for birthdays; Christmas?

    3. I think all the products you make are so interesting, in fact I am looking forward to ordering your newest cookbook some amazon as a Christmas gift to myself.

I hope I didn’t do a question overload for you. Thanks for your wonderful blog; and I think at the end of the day; trust your gut because we will follow. 😉

  8. Jen Avatar

Katie, your blog is fabulous. I appreciate your integrity , heart and soul and PASSION! Do what your heart speaks and the rest will follow. Thank you for your blog.

  9. April Avatar

Ads on your site would not in the least bit be selling out! As long as they don’t take over and get in the way of the amazing content you post. I’m going to love your site just as much with ads promoting products you trust, as I do right now. Keep up all the great work, you are a daily inspiration to me and many others.

  10. Sharon Avatar

Wow! It must have taken you a lot of time to process through all of these thoughts, emotions and plans. I appreciate your transparency and the way you are focusing on the most important things and guarding your family and time with them. I can imagine it was sort of like, one day you started a little blog, and then the next thing you knew it was like a runaway train. Way to reassess and take decisive action on how to get back to your priorities. Very admirable. Blessings to you as you focus on what is truly important to you. ~Sharon

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for all that you do. You are my go to web site for everything natural and healthy. I am a mother of two and use your homemade products daily. I love when you list the products and where to buy them and I trust that you are giving us honest resources. I have never been disappointed. You are an amazing woman and I am so grateful for the time and energy you devote to your site. Thank you, thank you and please don’t stop. I trust whatever choices you make for your site. If you need to earn money by us clicking and buying products you list so be it. I am happy to do so.

OMG! I SO GET your feelings! I am a blogger too, my latest blog has been about 4 years old. Blogging is one of the hardest “jobs”…I put that in quotes cuz unless you are working the spammer/scammer online marketing thing, it hardly makes any money! I posted my expenses and “income” and I had a person complain that I should not add in the cost of internet fees…HELLO! That is an expense, and I cut that expense in half to allow for personal use, but I think working on that blog development 8 – 10 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week, was well over my personal use of internet.

Blogging is a commitment! And some days we bloggers just want to have a normal life and spend time with family and friends and well, personal development…but it takes a shiftload of time, to think about a post, research it, write it, rewrite it, find pictures, upload pictures, work on SEO in the background, etc. I can’t seem to get a decent post done under 3 hours!

YES! THREE HOURS at LEAST! Unless of course I want to use programs that swipe info from OTHER bloggers, and rewrite it so Google does not recognize it… but THAT is CRAP!

So you take the time you need with family and just send us newbies to the former posts you sent so much time and care on. There is a point that a blog gets to where there is so much information that it becomes overwhelming…so I suggest you recycle your info into soundbites, little info pieces, or classes, whatever that revolve around related subjects…like how to stop losing hair and increase it…just a quick example.

Your book is absolutely amazing and I am ordering at LEAST one other for a wedding gift. I would promote your book on my blog through Amazon, but not sure if they are blocking you. (By the way, Amazon is starting to go down the tubes, so there is another Amazon copy, I think it is called Badu or something that all the stock gurus are drooling over, so maybe find some other delivery resources…but that takes time, and you deserve time with your family, so maybe someone here will have more info or can research for you another option.

SO, KNOW that your readers are behind you and support you, Keep doing what you are doing, and know you are leading the pack!

Three Cheers to YOU! and a BIG Thankyou, too!

You’re so loved and well supported by the community that follows your blog! I’ve been loosely following it for many years, it’s genuine and thats what makes it perfect. Choose some of the most uplifting comments from followers and keep them nearby to dispel feelings of doubt or unworthiness. You’re making a huge difference in people’s lives and I hope to someday make a difference like you do when I finish school!

I trust you, I respect you, I see you as a mom like me and the path you’ve chosen truly does help me to be a better mom and steward of our world. I love your articles and recipes and you’ve helped me move giant leaps forward in a way of living I was already committed to. I’m thrilled that so many others share this desire and there’s no better place to send my friends for information that Wellnessmama. I often think to thank you but I know yours is time consuming job and you hear from lots of people every day, but Thank You Katie! Do whatever you find is fulfilling and expect it to change over time, and don’t be too hard on yourself and don’t ever let critics get to you because I can’t imagine you could ever know how many of us adore you.

My family wouldn’t be as healthy and chemical free if it wasn’t for you and this blog.
I love reading blogs without the squeaky clean-ness, for example, katysays.com, which btw you should totally do a podcast with Katy Bowman, I feel like you two would get along.

the comments above already say that you are wonderful, and you are, there’s nothing more I can say there that you haven’t heard, but for me and my husband David and my son Kendall, and my daughter Jane, those are all individuals that you don’t know but just remember you have changed their lives for good.

It has to be so so so hard deciding what to promote and thinking you are getting involved with something wholesome and then having it turn out to be icky. Especially because of who you are and what the wellnessmama idea is, and I feel like the essence of “paleo/primal/hunter-gatherer/traditional/caveman” is also to be up front honest no strings attached because that is what the lifestyle is. there is no fine print because its how are bodies were made to eat, play, walk, be cleaned, love and so forth. And you are a shining example of all of those things.
i could go on but my baby just went down to sleep I have some me time to get to!!

I would enjoy seeing some ads, obviously, if they are highly screened and totally pure. which I wouldn’t expect anything less from wellness mama.

    thank you!!

Katie, you are one of my favourite bloggers. Nobody is perfect and it’s those imperfections that allow us to not be creepy stepford robots :p I learned the hard way (via adrenal fatigue) that stressing over everything just makes thing worse.

Now, you are gorgeous (and totally hotter than Jennifer Aniston. true facts. amen. hallelujah lol). I admire your large family, especially in today’s age. People tend to sneer if you have more than a couple kids, so its inspiring to see a large family (and I have hopes to one day have a crazy brood of my own!). I definitely don’t think you are a sellout of any sort, and would love to see courses/ebooks/products from you.

I think what I love best from you is that you always seem genuine (and funny to boot!). I’d love to see a more uncensored Katie if that’s the route you’d like to take.

    Lots of love, gorgeous

    Hi Katie,

I have been following you for about 1 1/2 years. I kept finding your blog when I was searching for healthy eating tips and natural products after I had my son who just turned 2. I admire you for starting a movement with your blog. You blog makes the world a better place every day. Not only because of your values and the information you provide about healthy living, but also because when women like me see women like you creating your own career out of your home it is truly an inspiration. 2 years ago I didn’t even know what other options existed when it comes to entrepreneurship. Now I have my own blog and a platform to try to make my own impact on the world, and seeing you do your thing each day played a role in that. Your success encourages me because it shows me what is possible!

I have always wanted to find a way to make a difference in the world by “helping people”, and your blog shows me what is possible when you put your mind to something, stay true to your values, and strive to make the world a better place in your own way. As a fan, I support whatever decision you make, but I must say that taking on advertisers and creating products for your audience is exactly what you should be doing! In order for all of us to keep benefiting from your amazing work you have to be able to make a living! The more financially sound you are the more energy you can put into creating things that could have an even greater impact on the world.

If there are people out there who have an issue with it that is their problem. You are an inspiration to me, and I hope to design my career in a way that allows me to organize my work around my son (and future children!) in the same way that you do each day.

Thank you for everything that you do!
    Lisa

  18. Amy Avatar

Today was the first day in a while where I felt like I actually accomplished what I wanted to do and felt good about doing it all. Thank you for your time and effort with this blog!

I don’t care too much about advertisements as long as they are relevant. Say I’m looking at a post about your lotion bars. I would like to see advertisements for the empty deodorant containers, bees wax, essential oils, coconut oil, and any other ingredient that is in the recipe. More specifically, I like advertisements to be relative to the website. I know facebook does some of that tracking and showing things you are interested in based on pages or items you have viewed. I tend to like that, but I don’t click on ads on facebook for something I just looked at (I clean out my browser cache every day, lol). I go to a site like yours for information and suggestions on what to buy. I look it over, compare it, read comments, and if I like it, I will add it to my wish list for shopping and grab it later.

I like more raw and personable material. In a way, you want to put your best face forward and that can be helpful to attract advertisers and get more traffic to your site as well. That’s understandable. The point is, people are wrapped up in thinking people who do these blogs, even reality tv, are perfect when they are not. I just had a dose of antibiotics almost a month and a half after trying to get rid of a sinus infection using probiotics and natural remedies. Then I caught cold while taking the antibiotic and may need another dose. Doh! The exact thing I was trying to avoid kicked me in the butt because I let it go on too long. Granted I was maintaining it from getting worse, but I could not get rid of it. Having people who recognize imperfections in their own life, who can relate, make handling the situation a bit easier. As you said, an amazing community has been built here for like-minded individuals. How do you try to not beat yourself up? Maybe another member could have the answer that may help you! In the end, you just have to do what you feel most comfortable with and that’s okay on my end! I just want to keep reading. 🙂

For providing content, I keep coming back so you must be doing something I like! I honestly stick to what is cheap in my local area even if it means not buying good wholesome food… $4 for an organic english cucumber is insane to me. I spend $150 a month for three people. I save $30 to buy meats, and $20 to stock up on items we use regularly. That leaves $100 for the month. I was in a bad car accident last year where I was not at fault, but I am still waiting for reimbursement. I have a hard time creating my own recipes based on the circular because I can’t always get to the store every week, but most food spoils within 2-3 days. So I’m currently looking into how to cut and package it to make it last longer without just freezing everything for smoothies every day. This has been a slow transition for me and there is so much information out there about everything. I’m allergic to stevia (massive ragweed allergy). My daughter is allergic to peanuts, legumes, and treenuts. She barely eats any meats, poultry, or fish but will consume hot dogs at least once every two weeks when she is in the mood. My family loves variety, bold flavors, and of course things that taste good! It’s very hard to execute that or learn to slowly process things out in place of better options–like what works for you? While it may work for me, it may not work for the rest of my family and vice versa, but how do I deal with that? What troubles did you have and how did you overcome them? I know things don’t happen over night and I don’t expect them to. I am a very hands-on learning person so reading only does so much for me. Having examples, informed instructions, added information, etc–helps so very much!

    Katie –

I’ve been reading your blog for the past 6+ months but first-time commenter. I felt so compelled to just let you know how much I really and truly admire what you do, how hard I can tell that you work to research and share content, and how much I appreciate that you share it with us.

I am most likely pretty different than your typical Wellness Mama reader. I am a 27 year old single female living in Los Angeles in my tiny 720 sq. ft condo! While I don’t have any children or a family, your blog has helped me change SO many of my patterns, and helped me share that success with many of my friends. You are the resource I turned too when I started experiencing allergy symptoms (after the purchase of charcoal bags, salt lamps, and a diffuser things are much better!), creating natural remedies instead of running to CVS, and working to replace and create many of my own beauty and home products even though I work 65+ hours a week at my corporate job. Your articles are so thorough, comprehensive but easy to read and understand, and provide actionable solutions, suggestions, and recipes which has me always going through your archives when something comes up.

In regards to the questions in your post, I would not at ALL think of you differently. I plan to purchase the Wellness Mama cookbook, and always come to your site before I purchase to help out through your affiliate links. I just want to say YOU have been a huge inspiration for me, I love both your blog and your podcast, and please don’t let anyone make you feel like you are less than what you are. That’s why I wanted to write you share this when you are feeling down – you’ve made a huge difference in my life and have inspired so much positive change.

True radiance will always shine through!

I would not consider ads selling out as long as they were products you would use. I like to find new healthy products.
I would personally like the raw wellness mama, a perfect image is overrated.
So far I love all the things you post about. All the homemade products, recipes and health info. Whatever you post I’m sure I’d love.
Thank you for creating an amazing blog. I seriously don’t know how you have the time. I have one little guy and barely have to time do photos and keep up with all the research I love doing on health. Honest people who stay true to themselves are hard to come by so thank you!!!
