Is the flu shot safe or effective
Wellness Mama » Blog » Health » Is the Flu Shot Safe?

There is no question that the presence of flu season each year and the vaccine created as a result have become hotly debated issues in the media, by bloggers and perhaps most fiercely, by moms.

Since I have often fit into high risk category number one in the past few years (pregnant women), and have children that fit into high risk category number two (young children), this is an issue I have spent many hours researching. I’ve compiled some of the research I have come across in researching this topic. Please note that I am not a doctor, and none of this is to be considered medical advice. I’m simply sharing information I found while researching this topic for my own family.

Also please note that any discussion involving vaccines can potentially become heated. I welcome *charitable and civil* discussion in the comments below. Any direct attacks or name calling will be banned. At the end of the day, we are all striving to make the most healthy decisions for ourselves and our families.

Terms, Defined

When referring to the flu, I am including all of the following in the definition:

Influenza, often referred to as “flu,“ is an infectious respiratory disease caused by type A or type B influenza viruses, which are present in the mucus membranes and secretions of the nose, throat and lungs. There are other viruses and bacteria associated with “flu-like” symptoms and it is estimated that about 80 percent of all flu-like illness that occurs every year during the “flu season” is not type A or type B influenza. Only lab confirmation can detect whether flu-like symptoms, including serious complications like pneumonia, are caused by influenza viruses or other types of viral or bacterial organisms.

When referring to the flu vaccine I am including the following:

Two types of influenza vaccines are available in the U.S.: inactivated injectable influenza vaccine and live attenuated influenza vaccine, which is inhaled through the nose,Inactivated, injectable influenza vaccines packaged in multi-dose vials contain the mercury preservative thimerosal but inactivated influenza vaccines in single dose vials are thimerosal-free or contain trace amounts of the mercury preservative. The live attenuated nasal influenza vaccine does not contain thimerosal. (as of the date of my research on the topic)
There are 16 different influenza vaccine products licensed in the U.S. marketed by different pharmaceutical companies. Some of these vaccines contain only the 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza A virus strain. However, most seasonal influenza vaccines in the U.S. contain two type A influenza viruses and one type B influenza virus that are selected every year by the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for inclusion in flu shots given during the current flu season.

What’s the Flu Vaccine?

The NVIC compiled a helpful list of links (from the FDA website) of the product inserts and specifics on the current flu vaccines:

Pros & Cons of the Flu Shot

Obviously, the upside of getting a flu vaccine should be immunity from the flu. Unfortunately, if the wrong strain is included in the vaccine, this won’t be accomplished. This article explains how this is not an exact science and how it is not possible to completely predict the strain or provide protection from it.

It seems there are two safety issues with flu season: the flu itself and the safety of the vaccine. I set out to research if (a) the vaccine was effective and (b) if it was safe. Once finding this out, I also wanted to determine the risks of the vaccine in comparison to the risks of simply contracting the flu.

Ironically, while pregnant women, elderly, small children and medical workers are thought to be high risk candidates for contracting the virus (and are therefore encouraged to get it), the research is still out on the safety of the vaccine for these categories.

What are contraindications to the flu vaccine?

Among high risk factors listed by the CDC and the vaccine manufacturers are anyone who:
      (1) is sick with a fever;
      (2) has an egg allergy;
      (3) has a mercury allergy;
      (4) has a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome.

If immunosuppressed individuals receive the flu vaccine they may not get an adequate protective antibody response.

Is Flu Vaccine Recommended for Children?

One consideration with the mass use of flu vaccine in healthy children is the removal of natural antibodies to flu which are obtained from natural infection. The question of whether it is better for healthy children, who rarely suffer complications from flu, to get the flu and develop permanent immunity to that flu strain or it is better for children to get vaccinated every year to try to suppress all flu infection in early childhood is a question that has yet to be adequately answered by medical science.

Although in the past the flu vaccine has not been recommended for healthy children, today vaccination of children between the ages of 6 months and 18 years is strongly recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the CDC and New Jersey now requires influenza vaccine for daycare and kindergarten entry.

Is the flu Vaccine Safe During Pregnancy?

In years past, pregnancy was also a contraindication to flu vaccine but, today, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends flu vaccine for women more than 14 weeks pregnant.

Influenza vaccines are Category B or C drugs, which means that adequate and well-controlled studies on pregnant women have not been conducted and it is not known whether these vaccines can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or if they can affect reproduction capacity.

The package inserts published by the flu vaccine manufacturers state that “Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with influenza virus vaccine. It is also not known whether influenza virus vaccine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Although animal reproductive studies have not been conducted, the prescribing health care provider should be aware of the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The ACIP states that if used during pregnancy, administration of influenza virus vaccine after 14 weeks of gestation may be preferable to avoid coincidental association of the vaccine with early pregnancy loss.”

Pregnant women should be aware that the flu vaccine contains Thimerosal, which is a mercury derivative. Mercury is toxic to the brain and has been found to be associated with brain damage and developmental delays in babies whose mothers were exposed to high levels of mercury during pregnancy.”

No testing has been done on the effects of these vaccines, alone or in combination, on the unborn children of pregnant women who receive them, though:

A recent study showed exposure flu viruses among women during pregnancy provoke a similar gene expression pattern in the fetus as that seen in autistic children.

Another important point to consider when weighing the risks and benefits of the flu vaccine(s) is their effectiveness. There are no controlled studies that demonstrate any decrease in cases of the flu among those who have gotten the vaccine. The insert in the FLUVAL vaccine for the 2009-2010 formula specifically states:

FLULAVAL is an influenza virus vaccine indicated for active immunization of adults 18 years of age and older against influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and type B contained in the vaccine. This indication is based on immune response elicited by FLULAVAL, and there have been no controlled trials demonstrating a decrease in influenza disease after vaccination with FLULAVAL.

    Hello,
thank you so much for your article! I’m trying to find more info on the preservative-free flu vaccine that my doctor’s office is claiming to be safe for pregnant women. I haven’t found much info online about it. Do you happen to know of any good resources regarding this “safer” flu vax?

    Thank you so much,

    Jade

I’m wondering how many who are (understandably) concerned when they hear some of the ingredients (mercury, thimerosal, formaldehyde, “antifreeze”, etc) have looked further into the specifics of those components in the flu vaccine. For instance, the preservative thimerosal is usually only used now in multi-dose vials (and in super tiny amounts), so the single use ones most patients receive are thimerosal free (you can specifically ask at your doctor or pharmacy just to double check). Formaldehyde, while certainly scary in large doses, is present in the foods we eat (occur naturally in some fruits and veggies like bananas) and is a byproduct of some of the biological processes that happen in our own bodies; the amount we produce and eat is FAR greater than what is in the flu vaccine. And finally, the mercury present is not present in the neurotoxic form that we worry about from, say, fish. With a degree in biology/chemistry I cannot emphasize enough that what form a chemical exists in absolutely makes a difference in how it acts/functions. We cannot just say “mercury is mercury” – in some forms it can build up in our bodies and cross the blood brain barrier and cause damage, but in others it’s too large to do those same things and is excreted from our body in a matter of days. Oh, and yes, polyethylene glycol IS found in antifreeze, but so is water – neither are the scary/dangerous components of it. Now this is not to say in any way “So go out and get it!”; you have the right to say you don’t want it and in fact, I never got it before becoming a nurse and being required to get it – I’m a healthy individual and it seems like every year they’re saying “We just guessed wrong on which strain would be the big one”. But since it became a necessity in my job, I did more research about it (boy does it still annoy me though that I’m required to get it!), and that’s when I found that like many things, there’s more to the story. I hope this [long] comment helps in some way to further provide information so that others can use it as they move forward to make their decision – regardless of whether that means they get the flu vaccine or continue to say “Nope, it’s not for me”. =)

I am confused whether you are trying to say exposure to the flu virus or the vaccine causes gene expression in utero similar to that seen in autism?
Also your statement of the frequency of Type A and B infections is not accurate. Type A is the most common. Type B is less common. Type C is least severe.

    Hi Katie,

Thank you for taking the time to do the research on this. I’m just curious because I don’t think I saw it in your post, but did you end up giving the flu vaccine to your family/,children? Thanks

I have to have the flu vaccine if I want to keep my job (which I absolutely do). Is there a way to find out which of the available forms of the vaccination is the safest (in terms of less toxins, etc.) and where I can get this particular vaccination?

Not sure what state you live in but you can get an exemption form from the state. Typically you just have to wear a mask during the flu season at work. I live in Texas and its very easy to get a form. I just take it to the employee health nurse and wear my mask when I’m working.

I believe the science is not in favour of he flu shot for the average person, just for the very sick. See the tons of research done, all fully referenced to science or mainstream news sources.

My nephew is a patient at St. Jude which is one of the premier cancer & catastrophic childhood disease research institutes in the world. It is the most amazing place to visit and be treated. If all medical institutions were like this the world would be a better place. They insist on the flu vaccine for their patients and their families although not the live virus spray. Their research is so extensive, exhaustive, & shared freely with other institutions in the world that I would trust their recommendations over lay people any day.

I see in the comments and from above that you have updated this post. However, all of the research references are 6+ years old. I remember reading years ago, even on the CDC website, that the flu vaccine showed no evidence of reducing flu-related deaths. Their tune seems to have changed a bit now to, at best, confusing verbiage of efficacy to ra-ra flu vaccine. Wondering if you have come across any newer research? I find myself feeling the same way – the most compromised people are the ones they say should absolutely get the flu vaccine but to me those are the ones that should specifically not have a chemical load of crap introduced into their body. I mean, even a dog shouldn’t get a rabies booster if they are sick…. ?? (or maybe ever more than once, really. But that’s another topic)

I have followed Wellness Mama for some time. I believe my daughter’s health was severely harmed by one Gardasil injection. Now they are pushing flu shots on EVERYONE!
How does one refuse? I have read if you have allergic reactions, that they (flu shots) are alright now. Pregnant women ok, too? They seem to be FORCED on all populations now. Why? I have read that blaming the person for NOT getting vacked is why “that” person is now ill with that virus or whatever. The blame game? really? When did the USA become a NO CHOICE country? When did pharmaceutical companies get so much power?
How are any of us safe? I know of more people that became very ill after the flu shot who never got the flu ever before. You cannot take the manufacturer or the doctor to court if your family member is harmed. There is no way you will ever be able to prove the harm after any of these so called vaccinations. When did the medicine begin harming? And not help?

    It is frightening

Thank you for your research. I am a 63 year old hospital employee writing my declination for the required flu vaccine. I have done this for the last 2 years since it became mandatory for all employees. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years and a vegan for close to 10. I am very healthy without even a cold in 4 years. I have no intention of getting a vaccine without a guarantee of being effective for something that would make me extremely ill. We have only a medical or religious out. I have sort have used both each previous year. I had no idea of some of the possible ingredients and plan on adding that to this years declination. Thanks

I am 76 years old and have not had a flu shot in over 35 years. I quit getting after learning what they contain and the low rate of effectiveness. The last time I had any flu-like systoms was immediately after getting a flu shot.

It’s obviously biased for you to blankly state that “the flu vaccine contains thimersol.” The truth is that only some of them do, but the preservative free ones do not and those are the ones given to pregnant women. This is why blogs such as yours cannot be trusted and thrive on misinformation for the uneducated public.

    Rachel,

Please research The Drs. Wolfson. Dr. Jack and Dr. Heather are very against vaccines. Their web site if full of good information as well as their Wide Awake seminar they have on DVD. I have Dr. Jack as my cardiologist and think the world of him and his wife. I trust my life and my heart with him. He also speaks around the nation and both were recently featured speakers at The Truth About Cancer Live seminar.

Honestly, I think discussing vaccines is pointless. Read what doctors have to say – several of them and then make up your own mind.

Hi Katie! I would love to hear your opinion on vaccines. I am pregnant with my first child now. My husband is extremely against any vaccines and until I was pregnant had no knowledge of the danger of vaccines. I am doing constant research to try to and make the best decision for our baby. We plan on homeschooling so I’m not concerned about schools. What Is the best alternative schedule? I know at the very least we will delay any vaccines until she is a bit older but I’m just not sure which ones we should avoid completely. There is so much information and I am in no way a doctor. However, I am smart enough to know that the current vaccine schedule provided by the CDC can not be answer. Thank you in advance & if you ever do an email list, please put me down!!

    Katie,

Do you know anything about “green vaccines” or Homeoprophylaxis? This is something I have just been hearing about and would greatly appreciate your insight on it. It seems to be the best of both worlds- using homeopathy to make a child immune to childhood diseases. Blessings
